Fuchs who founded the Holsum Baking Company in Homestead, Florida, in 1913. To be closer to distribution centers, Mr. Fuchs move his bakery to South Miami in 1934 where it became one of the biggest employers in the city. Fuchs was a civic leader in South Miami where he served as a charter member of the South Miami Chamber of Commerce and as its president from 1937 to 1944 and from 1949 until 1954 when he passed away as a result of an air boat accident. In April 1993, on the 80th anniversary of the Holsum Baking Company, the City of South Miami dedicated a plaque in his memory in the park. The park is the home for the offices for Chamber SOUTH which has served as the chamber of commerce for Greater South Miami-Dade for more than 80 years. Also n the park you will find a picnic area, picnic shelter, running/walking trail, benches, water fountain, playground, sand volleyball court, and pond. My favorite part of the park was the feature feature which attracted a large variety of birds. This park is perfect for birdwatching, exercise, picnics, and play. I really enjoyed discovering this little oasis of nature right near busy US 1.

In 2021 a new playground was added to the park. The playground was built in direct cooperation with the manufacturer and the community so they could save money by not having to hire an architect. The park was designed with community input and includes swings and slides, colorful jungle gyms, a mini rock climbing wall, and a water misting station to cool down. For bigger kids, there is a pavilion and tennis and basketball courts. There is also a covered pavilion, walking path,, and picnic tables. The biggest drawback to this park is lack of parking. The park was filled with people when I visited but with not enough parking it seems like the city wants it only to be used by neighborhood residents. The city did a great job on Jaycee Park and it seems a shame that people who would have to drive over can't use it.

A memorial plaque in the park that states that in 1946 the Guitier family sold two acres of pineland to Howard Van Smith for $2,000. The Van Smith's had already built a wood frame house on the property in 1943. The Van Smith Nature Preserve was established in 1946 by Howard, his wife Anne nd their four young sons Garrett, Parris, Anthony, and William. The preserve was to be kept in its natural state for all to enjoy. The open area is a great place to play and the surrounding woods at the edge of the park beckon exploration by young adventurers.. Cone out and have a picnic or just enjoy a spot of nature in the midst of urban Miami.

Welsh in 2021, the same year he lost his battle with cancer. Welsh was known as a local Johnny Appleseed because he planted live oaks and Dade pine trees throughout the county. Vice Mayor Robert C. Welsh Jr. Park officially opened to the public on Tuesday, August 9, 2023. The new park features an open green space, a basketball half-court, a playground area with a poured-in-place protective surface, a shelter, concrete sidewalk, benches, a bike rack, a water fountain, and native Florida landscaping. The park has a pretty water view of a canal that runs next to it. I think the city did a great job on the park. It is so inviting adding natural beauty to the area while giving the kids in the neighborhood a great new place to play.

Jean Willis Park is 3/4 of an acre and located next to the South Miami Police Department. In 1991 the Flowering Tree Society donated more than 60 flowering trees including crape myrtle, butterfly tree, China doll, firecracker plant, bell flower and white candles along with labor and planting materials. It was the organization's first public landscaping project and the first passive park in South Miami dedicated to flowering trees. Today the park features a gazebo, picnic benches and a variety of native flowering trees which attract birds. South Miami Senior High School students constructed a pair of trellises to anchor both ends of the park in 2013. I enjoyed checking out the unusual trees like the colvillea, cordia sebestena, and the silk-floss tree. Jean Willis Park is the perfect place to relax, enjoy a picnic, and bask in nature.

It is a an oasis of nature and tranquility and lives up to the South Miami motto "The City of Pleasant Living." All America Park has large trees, native plants, and stone seats. The trees and bushes hum with birds, butterflies, and squirrels. Also impossible to miss is the screeching of the many peacocks that call the surrounding neighborhood home. My favorite part of the park was the butterfly garden in the back filled with milkweed and attracting a number of Monarch butterflies. Also in this area someone hung a small swing for children to enjoy. This park is low on tech and high on nature. It makes you feel like you are in a secret garden. This is the perfect place for families in the community to enjoy a picnic and the beautiful outdoors.

Took my little one here 4 times already and each time have made friends with new parents. The park…read morehas been part of South Miami for a while and consisted of a 0.58 acre of land with a Gazebo on it but that was about it, until this past month when a kiddie park was installed: swing set and jungle gym with slides all atop a rubberized material was installed. This has reinvigorated the park. We exchanged numbers with one set of parents on New Year's Day who had a child that was just two days younger than ours. How about that? The park is a little closer to us than Dante Fascell so that's an added bonus. Green Lime Bikes are positrons on the premises so you can take off on a whim. There is even a Geocache somewhere in this park, but we never managed to locate it. Dison is small, but if you have a little one, it's probably just the right size for him or her to take the edge off before sleepy time.

Veterans Park is located in the south part of the city. It is what is called a pocket park. Pocket…read moreparks are generally less than a half acre in size and can have different features that are accessible to the public. Pocket parks arose from the desire in the community to have places for kids to play instead of another building on the vacant land. Veterans Park is one of the newer parks, the land was acquired by the city in 2009. It is just .59 acres and for many years the park only contained a gazebo but in 2019 the city added a new playground which made the park more inviting to families with young children. In 2021 the park which was previously named Dison Park was renamed Veterans Park in honor of the service Veterans provide in protecting the country. There is an American flag and a Missing in Action Prisoner of War flag at the entrance to the park. For such a small piece of land Veterans Park has a number of valuable amenities. There are paved walkways, a covered playground with climbing structures and slides, a swing set, a gazebo, benches, and a grill. While the much larger Dante Fascell Park is only a few blocks away, Veterans Park fills a valuable need in the community for a safe place for children to play.
