I did a round of library visits today, on the hunt for some dvds. This is the next closest library…read moreto the one I visited in Paterson, so I figured I'd stop in. This library seems fairly sprawling, taking up a lot more space than most of the other local branches. You'd think that would indicate a wider selection, and maybe that's the case in the sections I didn't see. My main complaint about this library is that they make it really hard to find what you're looking for in the strange guise of making it 'easier'. For instance, They have a section for Fantasy, a section for Mystery, a section for Science Fiction, a section for Fiction, a section for Westerns, and a section for Young Adult Fiction. Which means if you're looking for a genre-crossing title, you've got a lot of places to look. Also, there is no specific section for romance. As an example, I was looking for a romance by Sandra Hill who likes to write time-travel fiction about navy seals and vikings (don't ask). I finally found the title in the Mystery section with a label on the spine indicating that it was Fantasy. Clifton's library DOES have a selection of DVDs and quite a few TV series on dvd, but overall, their selection is underwhelming. They also have a 'new media' shelf which I was hoping would have some new DVD releases. No such luck. This shelf housed titles like "Van Helsing" and "Rambo". I guess 'new media' means new to the library. On the other hand, if you're looking for VHS tapes, this place has a room packed floor-to-ceiling with cassettes. If you're looking for older titles, you might just have luck here. The librarians are helpful, but not terribly friendly. At one point a child wandered in to use the bathroom (He indicated that his father was waiting in the car outside). The librarians took great offense at his presence without an adult and told him to use the bathroom and leave immediately. Ultimately, this creates a quiet environment, if not entirely welcoming.

From what I understand, many towns have either shut their libraries or taken away funding resulting in less hours and rundown facilities. It's so nice to have a pretty library available to the town (and county, I think). I'm really just reviewing to support our library.

Los Angeles is known as the City of Angels. What is less well known is that New York City is full…read moreof angels too, and the Department of Sanitation is full of them. Here is my story. On Saturday, August 1, 2026, I was riding a Citi Bike during the Summer Streets celebration, starting at Dyckman Street, riding down Broadway to Park Avenue, and continuing into Brooklyn. I had my iPhone mounted on the handlebars. Somewhere along the route, I looked down and noticed that my phone was gone. I panicked. My phone was my only point of contact with the two friends I planned to spend the beautiful afternoon with. It was the only way I could contact anyone. I had no idea how or where I had lost it, and the only thing I could think to do was lock up the Citi Bike, get on the subway, and use my computer at home to search for my phone through the Find My app. When I got off the subway and was walking home, I met the first angel who helped me, an NYPD officer. I asked him to call my phone, hoping that someone would answer. He called, and to my surprise, the second angel picked up. It was Dana. She was with the Department of Sanitation, and she had my phone at 110th Street and Broadway. She told me that a good Samaritan had found my phone in the street and handed it to one of her sanitation colleagues. I immediately jumped back on the subway and headed downtown to pick it up. When I arrived, I was shocked by how kind Dana and her colleagues were. None of them had to do the right thing, but every one of them did. In the past, I found someone's suitcase in the back of a taxicab and returned it to the owner. I also found someone's iPod and returned it. I was stunned that so many people cared enough to do the same for me. I was thrilled and deeply grateful for the kindness everyone showed me. I asked to take a photo with them, and they graciously obliged. I do not remember everyone's name, and I am sorry. They are all heroes to me. Zohran, I am talking to you. Please give these wonderful people, along with the police officer who helped me, the keys to New York City. They deserve recognition. It is not about the phone. It is about doing the right thing, which seems to be so rare these days. Better yet, if you can swing it, give them all a two week paid vacation in Hawaii. I mean, seriously. Thank you to everyone who helped me. You are angels.

When I was really little my father had the old truck with the tarp on the back. He picked up trash at the rich people's homes in Greenwich. I used to get some great stuff like baby dolls and my mother got dishes etc. After a while my Dad and Uncle saved and borrowed to get the latest model garbage truck. In one of my favorite photos of my Dad he is standing next to the truck with a huge smile on his face. I even have an old news article that my father saved telling about the latest trucks back then. As much garbage as this city has these men are so friendly and pleased to speak to me. They deserve the kind words and praise. They aren't on the news saving lives. In an indirect way they do. Please do me a favor and give them a shout out when you see them hard at work. I was a civil servant over forty years.
