Libraries have always been a large part of my life and continue to be. The Montville Township…read morePublic Library is one of the finest community libraries in Northern New Jersey in my opinion. Although the library has many resources, I use it primarily for three reasons.. I read seven magazines each month cover to cover religiously. Scientific American, Smithsonian and National Geographic are three on that list. Aside from magazines, I also use their Museum Pass Program which allows free access to the American Museum of Natural History, MOMA and The Morris Museum. Lastly, I attend their special programs featured in their Pio Costa auditorium whenever my busy schedule allows. On rare occasions I'll use their computer research data bases, large video library and movie streaming service. This is but a small sampling of the programs and resources available. I believe the Hallmark of a community is the strength of their library and Montville Township Public Library has an exceptional library due in large part to leadership and staff which constantly tries to improve their services and offerings.

We are active seniors who thoroughly enjoy the Montville U programs at the library, virtual ones, craft classes for adults and afternoon concerts. The librarians are wonderful, caring people who work very hard to make the library better for everyone. The library is one of the benefits of our taxes in Montville. It is money well spent.

We stopped by on a cold winter evening (it was only 5 p.m., but you know how winter evenings feel). The first thing that caught my attention wasn't the books--but dinosaur footprints. Yes, dinosaurs! I later learned that during the construction of the interstate near I-80 in the 1960s, stone slabs containing dinosaur footprints were discovered. These footprints are believed to be around 180 million years old, wow, that's a lot! :) The library itself is a community-focused public library offering a good collection of books along with digital resources such as eBooks and audiobooks. They also provide computers, printing/fax services, and programs for all age groups. It's part of the Main Library Alliance, which means access to a much larger shared collection. The staff were very helpful--they helped my wife in creating her library card and patiently answered all her questions. There is a dedicated kids' section, which is well set up, and the overall dinosaur theme throughout the library makes it unique and engaging, especially for families. Overall, this is a small to medium-sized library with a strong community feel. A great place for readers, families, and anyone who enjoys learning something new

Not just the visitors but the staff was incredibly loud, speaking across the room to one another and other guests. I walked out knowing the business of not just the staff but a few of the visitors as well, and my uncompleted work. It was absolutely chaotic, not the environment of a library whatsoever. As an academic, I have spent many years going to libraries as a means to concentrate on a task. Im not sure i would return to this library again.

Full disclosure: it was my mother who looked up the Dey Mansion and requested to go there on a recent-ish visit. It wouldn't have been my first choice of things to do on a sunny Saturday but she's the guest and a total history nerd and it was something to check out. I can't say I didn't enjoy it at least a little bit... while my mom is a history nerd, I'm a design nerd and the house itself, built by the Dey Family, is beauuuuuufitul. The brick, the wide plank wood floors inside, the gorgeous [paint] colors used throughout were just striking on every level. Then the layout and design and function of the house back in the 1700's is so different then how we live in our homes now -- so interesting. The gardens surrounding the property are also so lovely. Here's my one issue with the historical site and tour -- when we inquired we were told it was 'less than an hour for sure' depending on how many people/questions. While the tour guide was nice enough, he was verrrrrrry long winded. There were 6 of us.. and that tour was most definitely longer than an hour. Not sure if that's the case every time but just something to be prepared for should you decide to visit. Cost for the tours was supposed to be $5 but during out visit they had just begun some restorations and certain spaces were closed off... so they didn't insist on guest paying. They still accepted donations though. Parking is also free, fyi. And the mansion is easy to get to from routes 23, 46 and 80.
