It has served the public brilliantly ever since, providing an impressive range of books and services, despite its small size and limited funding. Its employees are kind and attentive. We especially enjoyed the room dedicated to Philip Roth, one of Newark's most famous former residents, who has written compellingly on his upbringing. Library membership is open to those who work in Newark as well as it residents.

If you are into graphic novels, the library has a decent selection, too. The library sponsors various kinds of events for patrons and the community. I've gone to one of the library events in Centennial Hall featuring the Arts High School Jazz Ensemble and it was really cool. Lastly, along with Newark residents, people who work in the city can get a library card. In short, NPL is a wonderful library with a noteworthy vision and mission. Its employees and volunteers work to enrich the lives of people in the community. I'm a fan of the Newark Public Library and recommend you visit it at least once if you are in the area.

The Newark campus is somewhat sparse with construction constantly going on just like in New Brunswick to beautify the school. Unfortunately it doesn't look like any of that is happening and after being here for a few years it barely looks like anything has changed. It's a headache coming down here in the morning and afternoon so unless you live near campus, which also not very inviting, it's just a hassle coming here, parking is a trap if you chance it parking on the street or you pay for a parking pass which still require $5 a pop after the $30+ subscription. Bursar, admissions, administration and everything else you have to deal with all bring on migraines and while I know this could be said for any University this one is especially so. I know Rutgers is held in high regard but personally my experience has been most unpleasant and coming to Newark for class is convenient but only a lesser of 2-3 evils.

The administrative building (Blumenthal) is found on University (between Warren and Raymond). You go here for all your registration and bursar needs. The health center is also found there. Most of the buildings where you take classes are contained in the block created by University, Warren, MLK, and Bleeker. Within that square, it's convenient to go to classes. Plus, in this square block are the Dana Library and the Paul Robeson Student Center. The dorms are between Bleeker and Central. Then there are the buildings between University and Washington - Center got Law and Justice (law school and some criminal justice classes there), the parking Deck, Golden Dome Athletic Center, and other classroom buildings. There is also another Parking Deck on Washington between Raymond and Warren. If you don't have a car, there are many public transportation options. The campus is located close to the Washington Street stop on the light rail, and there are also a number of buses that will bring you close to campus. There is a lot more passive green areas and places to sit outside, than when I went to school here many moons ago. It used to be just concrete and red outdoor tables that were bolted to the ground (not as picturesque as today). I am a fan of the Rutgers-Newark Campus. Plus it's close to the Newark Museum and the Main Newark Public Library, as well as the Haynes & Co. building and other nice spots in Halsey Village.

If you like browsing around, there are probably better, more well stocked, newer libraries (like Montclair) but since the libraries are so interconnected, it's really easy to request what you want and come to receive when notified. I do think the parking can be annoying because it's either meter or wait until after 6 when the meters are free. This is unusual in my experience to not have free parking at a library, so it is a knock against it, but overall I like this place so I lean more towards a 4.

They are usually eager to tell me about the programs going on and assist me in finding and getting the books I want. I like their website and the services provided. I've signed up to get the text alerts for the activities going on and I love that they have so many digital books that are always available to access online. The ambiance of the library is also very happy. Very colorfully decorated with a steady stream of new books on display that you can checkout. This location has a friendly atmosphere and I enjoy seeing the steady stream of people participating in their programs (arts and craft, story time, sing a long, yoga, guitar lessons etc.). In this era of isolation it's a great place for people to go and interact with others if they choose to.

Also, apparently the reading time in the Children's area is jumping. The strollers come out in full force.

I've been looking forward to the opening of our new library for over a year, and unfortunately, my…read morefirst visit was disappointing. I really wanted to love this space and make it a regular stop for my kids and me, but our experience left me feeling unwelcome. When I arrived, I wasn't greeted at all. The staff at the front desk were engaged in a personal conversation and didn't acknowledge me for several minutes, even though I was standing in line clearly waiting for assistance... I had a few questions and just needed some direction, but felt overlooked and ignored from the moment I walked in. Later during our visit, we were in the soft foam children's reading area. I removed my Crocs so I could sit comfortably on the foam blocks and read with my toddlers, assuming that shoes weren't meant to be worn in that particular area on the mats to keep it clean and safe for kids. A staff member by the name of Emily Head of youth services) asked me quite abruptly to put my shoes back on. I politely explained that we were sitting in the foam block area and that's why my shoes were off, but she responded with , "Well, that's very unsavory," and laughed. (Not in a friendly way) in front of others. It was embarrassing and completely unnecessary, especially since we weren't causing any disruption and were quietly reading together. After that exchange, I no longer felt comfortable in the space and decided to leave. We had walked 30 minutes in the heat to get there, excited to enjoy the new facility, but instead left feeling disappointed and dismissed. I truly hope the library staff can work on being more welcoming, especially to families and caregivers who just want a safe and calm space for their children to enjoy books. First impressions matters and unfortunately, this one missed the mark.

It reminds me of DC where I previously lived. As I entered the building, I noticed that the workers were very helpful, and there was lots of space for reading the books. There was also a wide selection of books available as all the books on personal finances were there. I heard they have good services in here such as free CBT, which I would like to check out. I think I will come here again- good library and use of public space.

While there is a printer available, I don't believe they have a scanner that's available for public use. Fairly decent selection of books. Librarians and Library Staff are the heroes of America and JCPL Miller staff are a fine example of…read morethat. They are so helpful and kind it moves your heart. The projects and activities for kids are well thought-out and organized. I saw one staff member come up to a kid who reached out to her for a hug. I asked, "Is that your daughter"? and the librarian said,"No, just one of our children who's been coming here since she was little". I also met a young woman outside the library who was greeting other kids coming and going. She proudly identified herself as the "teen representative on the library board." Now that's the way we build leadership and civic responsibility. (Not mention the child's self-esteem). The library takes part in the 'Rebl' program which allows you check out books etc. From another participating library. So if a book is out the librian will find out if another library a part of the program has it and have it held for you. The bottom floor has a very inviting children and young reader room full of things to check out and upstairs in the main library are everything else. Beyond books - editorials, magazines, newspapers and computers to use. What is great is the DVD wall. Hundreds of alphabetically ordered DVD movies are in the library ready to be checked out, so if Netflix and Redbox let you down for a movie a decade or so old you want to watch, you may find it here, for FREE! Just don't forget your library card.

You need to check the monthly calendar to see what they have planned each week. The staff, as well as outside groups such as Seton Hall students, do story time several times throughout the week for various age groups. They bring in animal specialists, musical guests, and a host of other special activities. I've also asked the reference librarians for help going research on the history of the town and local community, and they were so helpful. They even contacted me when they uncovered some information days after I left. I am so impressed with their dedication, resourcefulness, and commitment to help patrons.
