the schwarzman building is a SPLENDID library conveniently located in byrant park. it's an iconic…read morelandmark defined by its grandoise beaux-arts architecture and surrounded by gorgeous greenery. the floor plan of this library is expansive and includes multiple exhibition areas as well as a gift store! the hustle and bustle of new york city sits outside as it houses study areas with quiet zones, steady wifi, and outlets. i could work here for hours on end if i didn't go hungry or thirsty, but alas...there are so many places for food and drink within walking distance!

Beautiful historic library with great exhibits on the 1st floor, including the Winnie The Pooh and…read moresome great Audobon original drawings, which are HUGE in person! However, their policies are BS about the Reading Room, which is a historic area and probably on everyone's list as a tourist coming from far, far away to see it. These d-bags only allow people in if they are "ACTIVELY STUDYING" and block anyone else, even if you want to (quietly) snap a picture or glance at the artwork. Their security people act like they are protecting the Mona Lisa or something, giving an attitude to people who probably traveled a LONG WAY to see it, only to be turned away. Boston Library was also beautiful and they don't have this BS policy so I'd recommend skipping this one and go there instead. NYC Public Library = douchebags

They frequently talk for extended periods, sometimes for hours, at an unreasonably loud volume. When asked politely to lower their voices, they become very defensive. It does not seem like an unreasonable request to ask for quiet in a library, especially when staff have been talking continuously for 30 to 45 minutes. Despite making several polite requests for them to be mindful of their volume, I was met with a rude response and even told, both implicitly and later directly, that I should stop coming if I did not like it. Over time, I felt unwelcome and ultimately stopped visiting this library. While I understand that some level of conversation is inevitable, prolonged loud talking in a space meant for reading, studying, and quiet reflection is not appropriate. I felt it was important to share this experience and also raise it with library leadership.

The workers are louder than the kids, hearing them from their office laughing with each other but unfortunately they can't talk to their friends. In order for them to do that they would have to "whisper," while they are louder then them. I came in with my child and overheard one of the workers telling kids she does not care about them and that she would put them on the street if they talked. As a parent that was a very alarming statement to hear. Very disrespectful.
