Cashew Chicken Lunch special
Leanne V.

Have heard a-lot about the lunch specials here so I had to try when I had the opportunity today. The lunch special is $12 and includes a wide variety of choices for main entree. It is a great deal that comes with soup, fried rice & an egg roll. I chose the cashew chicken and it was very tasty. I wasn't impressed by the fried rice at all. It was a bit bland and had no veggies. Other than that, I would definitely recommend for the lunch special, next time I will opt for white rice. Service was really great and staff is friendly. The restaurant is clean. Recommend.

Lunch Menu

I am genuinely happy that I revisited Venus (Covina). It improved. I ordered the House Special Pan Fried Noodle ($16.95), the Salt & Pepper Fish ($16.95), and Side Order Steamed White Rice ($1.50). Although its portions are not huge, Venus (Covina) puts sincere effort towards its dishes. If ordering, I recommend the dishes that highlight shrimp and/or fish. Venus (Covina) is not an upscale, fancy location; however, it's a small business that works extremely hard to provide satisfying Chinese food and kind service. (Quick Note: In addition, the Lunch Special menu offers competitive deals. Lunch Specials are offered from 11AM to 4PM.) I arrived at Venus (Covina) on Thursday (around 6:10PM). Instantly, I was surprised with its busyness. I observed about seven groups of customers dining inside. Venus (Covina) is short-staffed with lengthy wait times, but staff (only two hosts) is welcoming and very friendly. After two minutes of waiting, I was eventually brought to a table. I noticed that the host forgot the menus, so I eventually walked to a nearby table to fetch one. Strangely enough, another table also mimicked me since their host also never offered a menu. Thankfully, I was quickly offered cold, fresh water. I was delighted how it tasted crisp and clean. Venus (Covina) avoids the common pitfall of serving old, melted ice water. After five minutes, a staff member eventually asked for my order. Please be aware that the wait time is lengthy. I waited 11 minutes for the House Special Pan Fried Noodle. At the 18 minutes and 28 seconds mark, the white rice arrived. At the 22 minutes and 27 seconds mark, the Salt & Pepper Fish arrived. I appreciated how the food arrived freshly cooked. I enjoyed the Salt & Pepper fish. It contains a thin, lightly seasoned crust. It has a crisp crunch. When bitten, moist & hot fish immediately arrives. The dish is not the prettiest, but it's packed with hearty freshly cooked fish. Regarding the House Special Pan Fried Noodle, it's a confusing experience. Pan Fried Noodle dishes are typically tasty when crisp; however, Venus (Covina's) House Special Pan Fried Noodle tasted better when it's soggy. The sauce is not savory; rather, Venus (Covina) uses a sauce that's sweet similar to teriyaki sauce. If eaten early, the crisp noodles taste a bit burnt and some vegetables taste a little raw. Only after the sauce had thoroughly been mixed into the dish for a few minutes, I began to enjoy the dish. However, the huge winner of that dish are the plump shrimps! Oh my goodness!! The shrimps are fresh and very flavorful & delicious! The variety of toppings on the House Special Pan Fried Noodle really highlighted the different tastes. The chicken is tender and flavorful. Unfortunately, the beef tasted a little rubbery and somewhat artificial. I'm not a fan of its beef or the occasional raw-tasting vegetable. Lastly, the steamed white rice arrived fresh and clean. Compared to my last visit (eight months ago), the rice now tastes much better! Concerning ambiance, Venus (Covina) also dramatically improved. The location continues to be very clean and shiny; however, it now has beautiful scenery played via flat screen monitors. Also, the location consistently plays soft, soothing music. I especially appreciated how Venus (Covina) felt airy and ventilated. As I sat, I'd repeatedly hear staff saying kind words to customers. Also, I listened as staff happily agreed to the many alterations and requests from its patrons. And most impressively, staff consistently offers to wrap and bag your leftover food for you. Overall, Venus (Covina) is a location that works hard to create a good experience for its guests. It's a location with heart that learns and improves. I enjoyed my meal, and I left Venus (Covina) with a bright smile. If nearby, I recommend. 4.5 out of 5

Employee sleeping in the restaurant.

I actually wanted to cancel my order. This is a photo of an employee sleeping on one of the banquets inside the dining room. Shoes off And reclining. Customers in booths all around him. This is so inappropriate . When I mentioned it to the waitress, she said, he's on a break. He so tired. Well I will not visit this business again. So gross

The sizzling rice soup is to die for!

Cindy is the absolute best! The sizzling rice soup is an absolute must order dish. I'm so glad I googled "Sizzling rice soup near me" and we ran... and boy was it worth it!! The braised garlic string beans are sooo delicious, with tons of flavor! And super crisp!! And very green and blistered! But delicious!! We seated ourselves and our food came out quickly!! We will definitely come back for other dishes!!! Very beautiful and clean restaurant too, with a well deserved A rating to match.

Yummy Chinese food place with lunch specials 11 am to 4 pm everyday! Yummy three flavors shrimp beef chicken and fried rice.

We came for my husband's birthday and ordered the orange chicken, the garlic edamame, and the vegetable egg rolls. The food here is so good! I asked Cindy the owner what the sauce was on the edamame and she said it was their house secret sauce. I don't know what's in that sauce but it's magical! It's such a relaxing atmosphere as soon as you walk in. They really treat you like family here

Absolutely incredible. Great food, great customer service. The only place I've found that will do a honey glazed fish filet for me instead of shrimp. Thank you. Will definitely recommend and be back.

I ordered tofu and eggplant in hot pot. I expected soup, but pleasantly surprised. Service friendly and quick. To go order, so didn't stay, but atmosphere is satisfactory, nothing special.

Egg Drop Soup (Free): It's boiled water, egg, and cornstarch. Idk if they even salted it. They might have. It doesn't matter, it's free. They took it away before we could finish the pot. Peking Style Pork Chop: It's good. I will gladly spend $13 for this. You get the signature sauce that's sweet, salty, and just generally good. I can recommend this 100%. Curry Beef Stew: Another above average option for the price point. Not too spicy, tender beef brisket, at a respectable portion size. No complaints from my end. Seafood Tofu: The worst of the bunch. Bland tofu, bland seafood, and the sauce didn't really do anything. I'd skip this. Ambiance: Starter Chinese restaurant trying to be serious. Tablecloth, tables that seat 4-8, at a decent size. Service: It's a Chinese restaurant, expect nothing, and you won't be disappointed.

After we started to skim the menu, I noticed that most of the menu items did not have pricing information clearly displayed. Since we were a large party, we decided to order the dinner package. At least that had a pricing displayed. Once the food arrived, it was extremely bland. Not only that but this was the most I've paid for mid-tier Chinese food in a while. Since when did Chinese food get so pricey? Pan fried noodles were ok, walnut shrimp was good, pork chops were decent but everything else was mid! Oh and those sodas are about $7,xx bux each so stick to hot tea. Also, they wrote in a suggested tip amount and underlined 16% but probably charged the 18%. It's also calculated after tax. It's supposed to be calculated based on pre-tax. I didn't want to fuss over the bill while the server stood over me. This will probably be the last time I step foot in this place. Not worth the price point at all.

If customers want the more exciting menu options, customers must call 2 to 3 days ahead and reserve those dishes also. Concerning payment, this business only accepts Visa, Master Card, Cash, Zelle, and ApplePay.) My family and I arrived on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day (around 1PM). I'd made a reservation the day prior since I'd been searching for businesses that stayed open during Thanksgiving. Parking is very easy. The private lot is spacious with many spots. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. Staff mostly spoke Mandarin; however, there was one staff member that could fluently speak English. Staff is very helpful and professional, and staff answered all our questions. We ordered seven dishes; all the dishes arrived within 38 minutes and 16 seconds. Good pace. The Salt & Pepper Fish Filet ($14) arrived in nine minutes. Then, six minutes later, the Beef Chow Fun ($13) and String Bean with Minced Chicken ($14) arrived. Then, 10 minutes later, the Combination Fried Rice ($17) and Salt & Pepper Shrimp ($17) arrived. Lastly, around 14 more minutes later, the Scallion Oil Chicken (Half - $17) and Almond Tea ($7) came. We happily devoured these delicious dishes. The Salt & Pepper Fish Filet had a thin, crisp crust with hot fish. It's gently seasoned. The Beef Chow Fun had springy, bouncy noodles. Its beef came very tender but a little lukewarm. The String Bean with Minced Chicken tasted clean and fresh; its chicken came tender and juicy. The Combination Fried Rice had plump shrimp, tender beef, and moist chicken. I especially loved how the rice felt hot & fluffy. It was well-seasoned. The Salt & Pepper Shrimp tasted crisp, plump, and well-salted; these shrimp were fried perfectly. The Scallion Oil Chicken tasted very tender and juicy. And the Almond Tea felt hot, velvety with the fresh aftertaste of almonds. Every meal felt clean and fresh. All in all, we appreciated how every dish lacked that overpowering/masking flavor. "TASTY!" Concerning ambiance, Sands Chinese Restaurant (Irwindale) is clean, sleek, and minimalistic. The tables and floors are very shiny. There's about seven tables inside. There's also a customer restroom in the back. The location is also well-ventilated as soft music plays in the background. Overall, my family and I had a lovely experience at Sands Chinese Restaurant (Irwindale). The food is fresh, filling, affordable, and delicious. If curious, I definitely recommend. 5 out of 5

My other two younger brothers organized a meet up for a family dinner with our Mom and all of us including my cousin and his family. We had a party of 17 people. He was kind to put us at the top of the waitlist for that evening. Thank you Joe! Huge parking lot. Good interior space with 3 areas of seating... open eating area, covered and enclosed patio area, and few private rooms. On the day of our dinner, we were seated shortly after arrival. Very grateful for that. They get super busy all the time. Wait time could possibly be a good while. We got lucky that night. Staff was amazingly patient, attentive, and hardworking. We had two tables. They took our order quickly. The food for my table came out timely, but the food for the other table took a bit more time. Not sure what they all ordered, but perhaps certain dishes just take more time. I ordered the Mixed Seafood with Tofu that came with a bowl of white rice. Tons of fried tofu, but seafood was a bit skimpy. Love the black mushrooms. Flavor was on point. Portion could have been better. I probably won't get this dish again. I also tried the dishes that my Mom and cousin got. Shrimp and Eggs was fluffy with lots of big tasty sweet shrimps. Delish! Seafood Chow Fun was super yummy and scrumptious... it had very good wok flavor and seafood was plentiful. Highly recommend these two dishes. I didn't get to try any of my daughters's dishes. They chowed down the Seafood Chow Mein and Sweet & Sour Pork all on their own which is a good thing. KW Cafe is definitely a great choice for lunch and dinner. I would come back to eat more of their Hong Kong inspired signature dishes.

This hit the spot, was refreshing, and was the perfect thing to sip on whilst waiting for our food. - The potstickers were okay. They were definitely lacking a dipping sauce, which I think would've balanced the dish out perfectly! - I really enjoyed the bbq pork! It was slightly on the dry side, but I didn't mind. (I tend to like meat on the dryer side for some odd reason). I think this dish, with a side of fried of rice would be spectacular together! - The Beef Chow Fun was my favorite of the items we ordered. The noodles & accoutrements were seasoned beautifully and the beef was tender and delicious. - The string bean chicken was also yummy! The string beans were cooked to perfection! However, my only critique of this dish is that there was not enough chicken and the chicken bits were a tad smaller than I had expected them to be. I definitely want to come back here and try more of the menu items! I'm eyeing the braised beef noodle soup, the pan fried noodles, the orange chicken, and the spare ribs for next time... YUMMY! After we sat down, the waiting line persisted past 1 pm. Similarly, the bustling loudness continued on during the course of our meal. Food arrived quickly, however. The price point for the delicious food is competitive. We got French-style filet mignon ($18.99), braised tofu in brown sauce ($14.99), chicken chow mein ($14.99), and a steamed rice noodle roll with barbecue pork ($5.99). A pot of rice was included in our meal. The steamed rice noodle roll with barbecue pork was a nice appetizer that arrived first. I enjoyed how the French-style filet mignon was garnished with Thai basil, black pepper, and ginger. The meat was flavorful and tender. The braised tofu in brown sauce was consistently hot on the inside. The delicious brown sauce soaked throughout the vegetables. The chicken chow mein didn't have a lot of sauce, but it was still delicious with a lot of meat included. Overall, it would be nice to visit again outside of a peak time because the food prices are competitive. The menu is expansive, and the breakfast selections look interesting.
