I have a bit of a biased review... I had returned from a wildlife tour pretty late at night on a Thursday and there weren't many open options at that point. I had seen Velvet Burger prior to starting the tour and kept that in my back pocket as the menu looked pretty good. So I ran in once my tour returned... and they ended up letting me order a takeaway chicken burger :D Despite closing up, they made it pretty fast and I ran back to my hotel to eat it. It was so good... I was really thankful they let me order so late, AND that the food was as good as it was. I had the chicken burger w/ bacon... super delicious. I honestly did not want to settle on a burger joint at the beginning, but was a surprised to find dinner at most places closed early in Dunedin. Velvet 21 was still making it happen well past 10pm. Kurt is awesome. Makes it feel like a fine dining establishment. Music was upbeat while we watched the drunk people down below in the large open window. Even had a wine and vegetarian option for the girlfriend to keep her at bay. Perfect if you plan to just walk around and drink at various places. OMG the best veggie burger in all of New Zealand. It's called "Animal Rights." I had a decent share of veggie burgers on my trip, but this one by far surpassed the rest. My husband had a burger one night and a chicken burger another. Both were hits. We ordered the ever tasty "Native Kumara Chips" with some aioli sauce *drool*..... The guy who was working the register was so kind. They are located in the heart of the octagon. You can order food for take-away rather than having to eat there. Solid burgers and great sauces. The chilli mayo in particular is outstanding for dipping both chips and burgers. As far as burgers go, both the "Hottie" and "Squawk Dawg" are good choices, although the former isn't going to give anyone heartburn, much to my chagrin. For the chicken folk among us, the "Babe" is tasty enough to compete with the beef burgers, and the pineapple really adds something to the flavor of the sandwich. Both skinny (McDonalds-style) and fat chips are great. Prices are NZ-typical (which is to say, high) but the mini burgers (read: regular burgers) and 1/2 scoops of chips are more than enough to satisfy any appetite. If you're not jonesin' for any beverage save a few bucks and drink water instead. I love a good beer as much as the next man, but $9-10 for the good stuff is just too high. read more

This is one of my favourite places to go to for a great and quick bite to eat. My partner and I have our favourite burgers although the entire menu is excellent. All the burgers have a burst of unique flavour with each bite. We love to rock up to 2 for 1 Tuesdays. The tip is to find out the password in order to receive the deal on the night. Between the good reviews and their claim to make the best veggie burger on the island, I was really excited to try this place. I could not have been more disappointed. The toppings on the Animal Rights burger were actually quite tasty. However, the patty itself was bland deep-fried mush that just tasted like oil. Whenever I picked it up, a steady stream of oil dripped out the back end to form large puddles on the plate. It was so greasy that I left 3/4 of the burger on the plate and went home to vomit (and I don't have a sensitive stomach). The fries tasted like freezer burn. This was the first time I've ever paid $16.50 for a meal only to abandon it -- it really was that bad. From a hunger standpoint, I suppose my lunch at Velvet Burger served its purpose: after three bites, I didn't want to eat again for the rest of the day. read more
