On my penultimate day in New Zealand before heading back to Seattle, I wanted to have some lamb. I…read moresearched high and low on yelp, tripadvisor, and google and found 3 restaurants with potential. The first was out of business, the second offered a hot stone, so you can cook your own lamb (no thanks, I'm out to eat, please have the trained chef cook my food) and Lone Star. Knowing its Texas influence, I was worried that my vegetarian wife would be left eating salad. Nope, there were four vegetarian "mains" and none were devoid of nutrients (aka pasta and veggies). I chose Lone Star. We were seated quickly by an upbeat host and asked to sit in the corner table, to which he obliged. Our server was friendly and down to earth and we got mushrooms and a salad for a starter and the mushrooms were delish! The salad also hit the spot. For mains, I got the lamb shoulder with mashed taters and asparagus, peas and spinach mixed together. It was aesthetically pleasing and I had the runner load up my potatoes with fresh cracked pepper. My wife's burger was HUGE and the chips (fries) were plentiful. We had 2 large Diet Cokes with lotsa ice and a pitcher of water, not a little carafe that I can drink in 3 gulps. The desserts looked great, including Hokey Pokey ice cream, but we passed. Our bill was $88 NZD ($59 USD). Well worth it. I met the manager after and he was a pleasure and I could tell he was taking care of the business.

The Bog has a steak dish way cheaper and more to it (also with different topping options). Went for the steak as had heard lots of good things and we were craving a steak. Steak was good, but there were no options for sauce or gravies on top of the steak, you get chips with it, that's all. Service was very friendly. The location was nice, confortable and warm. While it seems to be really popular, kai tasted good, we will definitely choose other places to eat over Emersons.

The waitstaff is amazing- the ambience is full of life, the food and wine variety is inclusive, gourmet and very elegantly put together. The bread is warm- DELISH! I got the vegetarian cauliflower entree and boy it was outstanding with the caramelized mushrooms and onions and the beautiful but potent balsamic glaze. The coffee based turkish dessert was a tad heavy and tad too sweet (I know dessert is supposed to be sweet So technically this is on me) but relative to the sugar levels in other restaurants, this one surprised me. Nonetheless- delicious!

We were the only people dining there on a Friday night in summer and there was no atmosphere at all. The five course meal was underwhelming and tiny, tiny portions! We enjoy nouvelle cuisine, but it's a bit much when, after paying $80 per person for a meal, you have to make your family a snack when you get home.. Overall, we felt Bracken was very overpriced (especially for Dunedin) and over-rated. The chef did little to cater for vegetarians - our main course was essentially three spears of asparagus! Previously we have had the non-vegetarian set menu and this was better, but the restaurant was empty that night too - not really a surprise perhaps?

He has just opened his own restaurant in Dunedin, in a lovely old house near the centre that he has renovated and turned into a beautiful dining establishment. Ken is a gifted chef, adept at creating innovative combinations of flavours and turning them into astonishing dishes. We enjoyed a six-course degustation menu as part of a special event, with each course paired with a special wine. Each course was extraordinary in its own way, with outstanding presentation, impeccable taste and creating a logical progression from the beginning through to the end. (This sort of degustation menu is not normally available, but many of the dishes we enjoyed are from the à la carte menu.) If I have any nits to pick, it would be that the degustation menu did not include a vegetarian course--all the courses aside from dessert involved a meat or fish item, which may have been what the organisers had requested, but had it been up to me, I'd have had one or two courses with a non-meat focus. Still, the meal was not overly heavy, so it's a minor point. All of us who dined with me left with a great desire to return to Bracken for a "regular" meal, which I suppose is as high praise as you could ask for. We'll definitely be back.
