A good location with a nice terrace to enjoy a snack, the view, and let the sun kiss you. Unfortunately the cafe is for sale and I am not sure if will stay the same... hopefully will be better than already is under new management. read more

We stopped here to take a quick restroom break on our way to the waterfall track and recalled a local who had recommended visiting this place. She couldn't remember the name but the way she described it made it obvious to us when we saw it along the roadside. I'm so glad we stopped by. It was a nice break from the endless rolling hill farmland drive. We were here on the weekend and it was busy but didn't feel overcrowded. It's probably packed in the summer but if you can stop by here it is definitely worthwhile!

Along with having a prime location along the pedestrian only strip of Jetty St with easy parking along Vogel, it has great art just outside and also inside the courtyard area. The fact that paint buckets and scaffolding had been set up inside didn't deter people at all from collecting inside Heritage, a testament to the effort put into designing the cafe. Our experience was determinedly efficient yet friendly. As a full service cafe, Heritage offers all your caffeinated needs along with a solid pastry, sandwich, and salad selection. Still and sparkling water are self-serve, but all other in-house orders are hand-delivered to your table. There's a range of seating options too: outdoor tables, a long counter perfect for people watching, and booths. Somehow everything fits neatly into the space without seeming patched together. According to the website, booths can be booked in advance too. My family enjoyed our Flat Whites and a Mocha (served with two marshmallows). The Friand had raspberry filling inside, and actually tasted more like sweet rice flour than almond flour - delicious even if it wasn't what we were expecting. I haven't been this excited by a bathroom for a while, but hopefully once you've made the trip you'll be excited too. Look for the door that's perfectly camouflaged along the wooden wall of the courtyard to find three separate bathroom stalls. Amongst the sparkling white furniture, something seems amiss. Before you drip your washed hands all over the floor, check behind the mirror for some truly efficient use of space (and paper towels)!

This cute two-story cafe has a lot to offer not just for the tummy but for the eyes and body, too. The lower level seating offers cozy leather chairs for lounging in an intimate setting, the counter level has tall top tables for a quick coffee break and the second story loft is a brighter, casual dining experience. Though the cafe counter is small, they have a lot to offer. They have an extensive breakfast menu (served all day on weekends and until 2pm on weekdays) that ranges from muesli and banana loaves to eggs benedict and crepes. Missed the breakfast menu? Never fear, lunch is just as appetizing. They have a whole range of options for the pickiest of people including vegetarian options (like the risotto or the fritters). I had the Toasted Ciabatta Sandwich which allows you to choose 3/6 options: sundried tomato, chorizo, ham off the bone, swiss cheese, sheep cheese and caramalized onions. I tried the sundried tomato, ham off the bone and swiss cheese which was delicious! There are also soups and salads for the smaller appetites. Thirsty for more than coffee? We were the only people dining there on a Friday night in summer and there was no atmosphere at all. The five course meal was underwhelming and tiny, tiny portions! We enjoy nouvelle cuisine, but it's a bit much when, after paying $80 per person for a meal, you have to make your family a snack when you get home.. Overall, we felt Bracken was very overpriced (especially for Dunedin) and over-rated. The chef did little to cater for vegetarians - our main course was essentially three spears of asparagus! Previously we have had the non-vegetarian set menu and this was better, but the restaurant was empty that night too - not really a surprise perhaps?

He has just opened his own restaurant in Dunedin, in a lovely old house near the centre that he has renovated and turned into a beautiful dining establishment. Ken is a gifted chef, adept at creating innovative combinations of flavours and turning them into astonishing dishes. We enjoyed a six-course degustation menu as part of a special event, with each course paired with a special wine. Each course was extraordinary in its own way, with outstanding presentation, impeccable taste and creating a logical progression from the beginning through to the end. (This sort of degustation menu is not normally available, but many of the dishes we enjoyed are from the à la carte menu.) If I have any nits to pick, it would be that the degustation menu did not include a vegetarian course--all the courses aside from dessert involved a meat or fish item, which may have been what the organisers had requested, but had it been up to me, I'd have had one or two courses with a non-meat focus. Still, the meal was not overly heavy, so it's a minor point. All of us who dined with me left with a great desire to return to Bracken for a "regular" meal, which I suppose is as high praise as you could ask for. We'll definitely be back.
