Nice restaurant right on the Octagon in the middle of the action. Good selection of beers. We had the fish and chips and the mushroom risotto, which were excellent. Cheerful, efficient service.

I went to Mac's on a busy night during holiday season with my girlfriend and her family. Each of us have very different tastes in food and drink, but we all left very pleased. Service was great. Menu easy to understand. Beer and food were great. Portions were GIGANTIC. We left with take away boxes full of unfinished mains. Mac's might not be the most impressive beer by craft beer enthusiast standards, but it's an easy crowd pleaser so there's that. I'd definitely do it again. Oh, and the raspberry julep beats a Kentucky Derby classic mint julep. And I live in Louisville.

I recently traveled around New Zealand with my sister in June and we found ourselves in Dunedin. Mac's Brewbar was our very first bar/restaurant in the city and we couldn't have been happier. First of all, the decor is undeniably charming and unique. Second of all, the waitstaff is super cool, casual, yet attentive and care about their customers. We had a really nice blonde that even remembered us when we came back for the DJ later that night. Service like this is so refreshing and what every restaurant/bar should be like. This place is amazing and I would do anything to be back in New Zealand, and this bar.

Great brew, the rosemary and chicken salad is THE BOMB, you must try it. The restaurant is located in the Octogon

Cold local beer and fun pub food in a unique atmosphere. Menus are converted records and seating is situated around two fireplaces or a quiet back room for 8-10. Attentive and polite staff with rather quick service. We had potato & bacon soup that was amazing! Very creamy and flavorful. Right on the octagon it's an excellent location to stop and have a drink. Outdoor seating is available provided a cyclone isn't ruining your outdoor time!

We stopped in here by chance, while wandering through Dunedin on a cold damp spring evening. Not knowing the town at all we headed for the Octagon. Otago were playing Southland so many fans were leaving the bars and restaurants for the stadium. Almost randomly we picked this place for dinner, sat down outside in the cold next to a heater and ordered two bowls of Daal and one dish of pulled pork sliders. We had no idea what to expect, but the beer was good, the live music (a mix of originals and covers, solo and acoustic) was excellent. The food arrived quickly and after a collective gasp as looked at the size of the bowls of Daal, we succeeded in finishing off the Daal and the sliders. Daal was great- excellent flavour, not too spicy, but with enough of a kick to put a glow on us that removed the chill of the damp night. After we finished eating we sat inside to watch the rugby to a great playlist that gave us many ideas for additions to our own holiday playlist. The service was great, attentive but not over the top. We had a great night here and would heartily recommend the food, the drink selection, the ambience and the service. read more

We came here for dinner on a rainy night in Dunedin. They had live music (a female guitar player/singer) and good food. The service was friendly, though I think we may have gotten skimped on the food...we were looking to share the fish and chips (because we saw someone with it outside and it was HUGE) but instead of splitting it on 2 plates like we were expecting, we just got about half the portion size..and paid for the full amount. It was a little pricey, but I guess that's common in NZ! read more

We read the reviews and decided to give it a try. Mac's gold beer was perfect and hubby had Issac's cider, he did like it too. We enjoyed the fish and chips. Definitely a place I'd recommend! read more

I took a oversea friend to Mac's during his visit of Dunedin. As a host, I introduced him the night scene of Dunedin. We cruised along the Octagon and finally settled here. We both enjoyed the craft beers, friendly staffs, tasty snacks and great hospitality. I think It's perfect venue for the rugby enthusiasts to support Highlanders among a good crowd while having a good yarn with your mates. read more

Very minimal, but plenty of beer on tap. Gotta love that.
