Since I don't have the equipment to fix the hem, I figured I would try to find a tailor that could fix it. Besides, you never know when you might need a tailor. I found Carols Express Alterations on Yelp, but it didn't have any reviews. I figured since it was about a 15 minute walk on a lovely, sunny day, to give it a go. I nearly walked right by the place and had no clue there was a tailor there! When I walked in it was quite busy with a small queue. There are a couple of sewing machines in the window, with the counter and till to the left. On the day that I dropped the trousers off, there was only one person at the counter. Along with tailoring, they also offer ironing and laundry services. I was asked when I wanted to pick up the trousers and it turns out with easy repairs they can do them same day, but I was in no hurry so I just asked for a few days later. They give you a ticket (don't lose it because they don't put names on them) and you pay when you pick up. I had thought about picking up the trousers on my way to pick up Mr. Snarky at the train station, however, there isn't much for parking. There is a pay-and-display across the street, but I find it is usually full during the day. So I just walked back up and when I walked in, there were two staff, this time no queue. One of the staff was working at one of the sewing machines, while the other took my ticket and went in search of the trousers. Alterations for trousers was £3, which is less than what I would have spent getting the supplies to repair the hem myself, not to mention they probably did a better job than I could have done. The hem was repaired quite nicely and it looks like they used a sturdier thread than what was previously used (I compared it with the hem on the other leg). Overall, really happy with the job they did, it was very fast, convenient, and affordable! I am considering taking my wedding dress from earlier this year and having some alterations made for the wedding and reception in the U.S. next year.

We've used Johnson's many a time both before and after its move and have always been impressed. The staff are consistently helpful and courteous (indeed they seem to remember us each time we go), and the service they provide is thorough and efficient. The prices (like most places, I suspect) seem quite high but when you can play with Tesco Clubcard points that doesn't matter so much, I suppose. All in all -- we wouldn't go anywhere else for our dry cleaning.

I got up to get something from the bedroom to discover a most horrific sight. Imagine a crisp, bright white duvet cover. Now imagine a smelly brown mess right in the center of that. But wait... there are brown paw prints, all over the cover, pillows, and even the bed frame. One of our kittens likes to show she is upset with something by going outside of the litter box. Ex. Mr. Snarky and I began the process of stripping the bed down and cleaning everything, but we noticed that some of the mess had gone through the duvet cover to the actual duvet. Of course I was panicking a bit because it was a Saturday afternoon and most places would be closed soon. After getting everything else in the washer for a boil wash, I got online and began looking for dry cleaners. Of course I had started with a large dry cleaning chain and discovered that our journey would be extra long because of the closure of the A666 and the subsequent traffic being funneled through the town centre. So I did a bit more looking and discovered Blue Lagoon, less than a mile away. Their website is not just very professional looking, but it is also very helpful and has most of the information you could want or need. Of course, right there on the front page it specifies duvet and blanket cleaning! Even more interesting is that they have same day services as well as laundry collection and delivery. Amazing! They have the prices for duvet cleaning on the website, they are different between polyester and feather duvets and then again based on the size of the duvet. Everything is £15.00 or less. We looked up their hours and they are open until 18:00 on Saturdays. Perfect! The store front is painted blue, so you can't miss it. If there is no parking on the road, if you turn down the street just next to Blue Lagoon, there is a convenient, free car park right behind. The shop isn't very big, but they were quick to help us. We pointed out some of the spots and they assured us they would give those spots extra attention. They asked us if we wanted to pick it up later or the next day. So we asked if they could do same day even though it was already a bit late (about 16:00) and they said yes and told us we could pick it up between 19:00 and 19:30. Mr. Snarky went back to pick up the duvet. When he brought it back, they had put it in a nice sturdy plastic bag and... the duvet was as good as new. We had picked up a pamphlet of all their prices (not all of the prices are on the website) since we were so happy with their service. They also offer deals on washing kits for sports teams. And if you need items tailored or mended, they also offer that service. So glad it is close by as I have a feeling they will be our usual dry cleaners!

They never once let me down either -- if they said a job would be ready at 5pm on Tuesday (or whatever), it was ready at 5pm on Tuesday! The prices were seemed slightly on the high side but then dry cleaning always is, I suppose. Certainly the prices weren't outrageous. The one downside was that there was no parking nearby -- I was often forced to park half-way up Captains Clough Road and carry the cleaning to the shop, which could be awkward. There are plenty of washers and dryers both small and large and the prices per machine are pretty reasonable. The staff are friendly and always helpful when neccessary. Avoid fridays though as it seems to be wash day and you will find yourself waiting around for machines!!
