There is metered street parking within a reasonable walking distance to/from here and the meters are free after 10 PM. I was lucky enough to snag a spot right in front of the place. I came her on a Saturday night. Rumor has it that is their best night. They were charging a $5 cover, which you can pay with cash or card. This place has an open layout with a warehouse kind of feel. The staff there was very friendly. They have your basic beer and classic cocktails at their full service bar. They also had frozen margaritas, which were my favorite. The place surprisingly had a very young crowd. The average age was about mid 20's, which I brought that number up considerably. The place was pretty packed though. The bar touts a live band, which started playing around 1045. The band plays classic soul, rock, and pop. They have a little something for everyone. I did not spend much time here. It was a little too young for me. Either way, I could see how people could have a really good time here. This is a nice bar and I would definitely hang out here again. read more

I came here because my friend loves this place and it was her birthday. Got here at midnight on a Friday and we were some of the only people there, which isn't a huge deal but I've heard this place gets wild. Luckily we were in a big group so we kinda amped up this place a bit. $10 cover, which is a bit much but we paid it. The place is definitely dark and dingy but gives you those old jazzy vibes. The best thing about this place was definitely the band but they play a mix of both new songs and original jazz so if you a classic jazz fan, this place might not be for you.Drink prices here are a bit cheaper by DC standards but the bartender looked like we were annoying the living crap out of her, which sucks because we were her only customers. Sorry for bothering you and giving you tips, I guess, so -1 star for that. Other -1 star was that the bathroom definitely needed maintenance, with them being out of soap and toilet paper in one stall. I love that they play old school and new music. The crowd is mostly young white college age. This is what happens when a place closes for "refab", and you think it is gone forever, then-- all of a sudden it rises like the phoenix from the ashes. That's the story of Vegas Lounge. When I went back here a few weeks ago, it was hard to believe it is the same place. Yeah, the building is the same. But the paint is off the walls, and its place - exposed brick. There's also a much needed bigger stage (the old one looked like it would fit maybe one person). We hit Vegas Lounge on a Wednesday night, which- lucky for us- was a jam session. It turned out to be an audition for the regular in house hand fronted by a great jazz music guy named Jackie Lee. Yeah, I thought that a place called Vegas Lounge would be a place for lounge singers, but it is truly a place for Blues. They host acts that range from acapella to trios. The food here was good- the barbecue wings and ribs especially. But don't expect to see your waiter very often, the place gets packed and the priority is the music here. Pseudo celebrity sighting: When I was in the restroom, another woman and I got to talking. She said that she was pretty much a regular and told me she saw the Bush Twins at Vegas Lounge a few months earlier. read more

Three and a Half Stars. The Vegas Lounge, or the "New Vegas Lounge" as the sign outside used to advertise, has been around for years; since the early 70s at least. As times have changed, so has the neighborhood demographic and the club's clientele. Nowadays, unless they're members of the band or staff, you're unlikely to see to too many people of color here. But if you like live R&B/Motown/blues, you'll learn to live with it; they're a business after all, and unlike HR-57 they're in it to make money. Dan's Cafe in Adams Morgan has similarly rolled with the punches and changing neighborhood and managed to stay in business. The same cannot be said of Foggy Bottom's legendary One Step Down, the nation's second oldest jazz club when it folded in the early 2000s. They had a philosophy and tried to stick with it, but even with a two drink minimum, they couldn't make it work. But I digress. When I first started coming here the place was a real dive, but it's undergone a renovation in the last few years and is much more presentable. There is a $10 cover, their drinks are kinda pricey and the bottled beer selection is what you'd expect (better off sticking to booze here), so have a couple at Stoney's before stopping by for the music. read more

Vegas Lounge exemplifies everything I look for in a good bar: it's nosiy, sweaty, has great music, Blue Moon in a bottle and a crowd looking for a good time. Really, what more can you ask for? My friend Lightning calls this her 'Unicorn Bar' in that it resembles the fabled creature of near perfection -and I must say, she isn't far off the mark. Aside from a few people shoving me a little harshly, this is one of the best bars / dance clubs I have been to in D.C. Not going to lie, I have been known to cut a rug at places like Rugby, George and Smithpoint - but Vegas Lounge has all the and more without the underlying pretentiousness. Let's be clear, I have nothing against the pretentious folks who frequent Georgetown locales, hell, one could even argue I'm one of them, but Vegas Lounge is just a welcoming good time where you can go anytime to lose your cares on the dance floor to a very talented live band. It's a winning situation, and considering it's literally across the street from my best friend's apartment, I'll wager I'll become some sort of local at this Vegas Lounge place. I'll be sure to update if for some reason my initial experience at this place fails to meet my now high expectations on subsequent visits. read more

Went here a weekend ago for a girl's birthday party. Was a bit upset at the $10 cover, but was told by the bouncer that there's a cover for men because "all we get is pretty girls in here, man." Well, he was wrong. There were definitely girls but not a ton of lookers. I was also somewhat shocked with the clientele here, considering just about everyone working in the joint including the band were all Black. But it was cool. Why 5 Stars? The band played some go-go. That in and of itself was well worth the $10 cover. I'll keep an eye on it to check it out in the future, see if anyone else is playing here than what appeared to be the house band. read more

I bet you are. Curious? Well, read on. The Great Basin Bristlecone Pine has the distinction of being the tree family with the single oldest living tree - the Methuselah. It's in California, and is over 4,000 years old. So, why is Vegas Lounge the Methuselah of bars? Well, it's elementary, dear Watson - because like the Methuselah, Vegas lounge is timeless - it's a swinging nightclub full of sweaty black musicians and ecstatic white nerds/preps dancing their sweaty asses off. Is this the 50s? 30s? 2010s? No one knows - that's the point. Like its tree namesake, Vegas Lounge is of an indeterminate age. But there is another, equally important element that Vegas Lounge shares with yea-old tree: its location is secret. Now, not as secret as Jimmy V's, but its pretty hard to find. Located in the heart of Logan Circle, I think it's close to a hardware store, maybe. Maybe a Whole Foods? Anyway, like Methuselah, Vegas Lounge is a hidden piece of pine in a thicket of stiff woodies - Logan Circle/Dupont. If you can find it, and if you can stand it- get in and get ready to get down. read more

To be a more accurate, I would rate this place a 3.5-3.75 overall. I like this place even though I felt a bit torn about the atmosphere. The atmosphere wasn't as "diverse" as I would hope for it to be. I almost felt that the minorities were performing to a more non-minority crowd..if you get my drift. Hardly seeing any minorities getting down to soul, funk and R&B was a bit strange to me, but maybe this is how it is in DC? At the same token, I guess it would be somewhat strange if it were the opposite also? Regardless, as mentioned in other reviews, the live, in house band was awesome; their energy is great. It gets really loud, (I ended up getting laryngitis the next day after screaming above the noise) so don't expect to have some soulful conversations. I wouldn't take someone here on a first date unless you want to discourage talking. However, if you and your date prefer your first dates with minimal talking or shouting your conversations over the band, by all means, come one by. And yes, the venue is a bit too small for dancing AND sitting around; though having tables and chairs to sit is good when you get tired from all the dancing. There was a $10 cover charge and security pats down the men before entering in. I'm sure there are other venues that are better than Vegas Lounge but the band is what would keep me coming here. read more

Think Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations...and pretty much any other artist or song in that genre that you know most of the words to and love to dance to at weddings or belt out in the shower. Then bring the talent level of the band from an average wedding up about 10 notches and you have the group of awesome musicians at the Vegas Lounge. This is one of my favorite spots for a fun night out in the city. I love it so much I had considered not reviewing it, but then decided that each and every one of you deserve an amazing night at Vegas Lounge too! First off- know where you're headed before you walk out your front door or hop in a cab, because the building is unmarked. And probably don't head out until sometime after 10 because that's when the band starts to pick it up a notch. Next don't forget some extra cash for the $10 cover, and don't fret because it is absolutely worth every dollar. That's what the well kept secret of Vegas Lounge is all about- the awesome live music. The stage is tiny and shoved right up on the dance floor, so most of the night you will be getting your groove on right next to the lead singer- who did I mention has an amazing voice. Although I've not been during the week since it's not really in my hood, the band is the same on both Friday and Saturday (I prefer Saturday nights). As this is the case, it isn't a spot you would frequent night after night- but perhaps just to get your fill of live music and dancing every once in a while. This place is the closest thing to a Chicago-blues club that I've seen on the East Coast. Except there are WAY more yuppies (myself included, I guess). Live blues every Friday and Saturday and the music's great. However, I do think it's the same band every weekend, and--though when they go back to their straight blues roots they're phenomenal--every time I've been there they always bust out into a rendition or seven of the same "crowd pleasing hits" to give the yuppies what they want. There are only so many times that I can hear "Shout" and "Mustang Sally" without getting stabby. Anyway, if you're not completely cynical and elitist, it's a good time. $10 cover, typical bar food and the worst rail drinks you've ever had, served in a plastic cup (just get beer)--but you're there for the music, and it's worth it. read more

I'll echo Sonja M. watch your belongings. this past weekend on Saturday night, numerous jackets were stolen. not mistakenly picked up, but stolen. When your two nice jackets, wrapped in your not so nice third jacket, are the only things missing, it's clearly not an innocent mistake. To make matters worse, the staff weren't exactly sympathetic. They made a nice point to shove me, steal my phone from me when I was recording them shove another person out of the bar on a public sidewalk (gave it back a minute later), fake 'punch' me to try to get me to flinch, then called the cops on us. To which we filed a complaint for our missing jackets and went on our way. I've been here numerous times- sometimes the band is fun, most of the time it's way too crowded to enjoy it and all of the time, the service reflects the disdain the staff have for their clientele. It's like they wished they didn't have any customers at all. Well after my wonderful experience this weekend, I hope that their wish is granted. read more

I thought it was new? Great times at (New) Vegas Lounge. I love the band. The drinks are reasonably priced and the crowd is down to dance. I don't go for the cover, though. You have to commit to this place or people get annoyed about paying $10 and then bouncing. I recommend (N)VL when you're drunk, with a group of people, willing to stay in one place after frequenting others, and wanting to end your night listening to The Temptations. read more

This is probably one of my favorite bars in DC, but that's almost completely due to the great house band that plays every weekend (the "out of town band" I think is their name). LAYOUT: Small. Opens to a seating area, followed by a small bar, then the dancefloor and the main bar in the back. Though it can easily get cramped, it's never too hard to get through to the bar or to find room on the dancefloor. ATMOSPHERE: The band. They are great. They will play until after 2 every night and always play plenty of feel-good, motown classics. I agree with some other posters that the scene has changed and become younger - that's perhaps a negative to some and a positive to others. If you get a (small) group together to go to vegas - people that like motown and are looking to dance - you will have a good time. read more

Came here a couple of years ago and loved it! The real test was coming back to see that not much has changed. The music is great...a lot of motown sprinkled with a little more current pop! The band is fun, interactive, and energetic. Now, the one thing that has changed - the crowd. It is a bunch of young...and i mean young 20-somethings. Most of them are wasted upon walking in. The crowd almost makes you not want to come back. But, if you can find your own corner, grab yourself a $6 beer and let the band drown out what is going on around you...you'll LOVE this gem. read more

The Vegas Lounge is a fine option for a night of good Motown and Soul covers. We went for a birthday party which the space is very accomodating of. Getting there early, we were able to pretty much have the run of the place. The bar is small and is staffed by two bartenders. This is fine when it isn't crowded, but it could use more staff during busy times. The band was excellent, well worth the $10 cover. Early on, it seemed to attract an older, after-dinner crowd. By the time the band had it's first break, the place filled up quick with a crowd you could find at any Georgetown bar. The space is narrow, so when it filled it up, it became nearly impossible to push your way through to the bar. This made it a huge pain to get anywhere. Also, as Matt O pointed out, there were several billing discrepancies that were met with a gruff response by the bartender when they were brought to his attention. They also did not fix the problem. Overall, Vegas Lounge seemed like a good spot for a date or for a big group. I can't forgive discrepancies on the bill, and the space was definitely overcrowded, but those could be issues that don't arise on an average night there. read more

Tucked away in Logan Circle, Vegas Lounge is the spot if you are looking for live music! The band is phenomenal playing jazz and blues inspired versions of popular songs as well as doing solos on the drums, keyboard, saxophone, and trumpet. The drinks are strong and service is pretty good. There is not a whole lot of space, but enough to dance around or hang with a group of friends and talk. There is a $10 cover, and although I am against covers, it is worth it for the band's music and entertainment. read more

We went to see several live bands in person when trying to hire one for our wedding this past September. After seeing them at the Vegas Lounge, we hired the Out of Town Blues Band and could not have been happier with their performance on our wedding day. Justin and the band were great to work with throughout the process, even adapting when we switched from a tented venue to indoors, and going out of their way to come and see the space to make it work. They were also very reasonably priced for the quality of what they put out. On the day itself, they played songs that we and our guests all loved - a great range that kept the party going the entire reception! I can't say enough good things about this band, especially the fact that through lots of changes during the wedding planning process, I fully trusted that Justin and the band had our backs and would make the day special and they really came through! I highly recommend them for a wedding, birthday party, or any special occasion when you want a great band that will help everyone have a great time!! read more

Clearly people have more substantial things to say, and there are some excellent reviews below. The point I would make is that they're both correct. -Before my review, a point. The house band is phenomenal. Just dynamite. I know women who have said they want them to play at their wedding. More on them below.- For weekend nights, during bar hours, you should know going in that there's a $10 cover, drinks are very expensive, and that it will be packed with all sorts of people (yuppies and more). The bar staff and bouncers can be less than friendly. It's not the kind of place you'd want to go wearing grandmother's pearls. If you accept all that going in, and you commit to wanting to have a unique experience and a great time, you will. It's a total party atmosphere. The band is blasting all the greatest tunes from any era or genre you could imagine. From James Brown to Beyonce's Love on Top, they do it all. And they engage with the crowd. It's a unique show and one definitely worth going to see. You won't be able to keep yourself from dancing the night away. If you're going out to celebrate, it's the perfect location. Have a few drinks before you get there, show up ready to enjoy the music with a crowd thats as free of inhibitions as you are. If you leave your card open at the bar, chances are, they'll charge you drinks you haven't purchased. You have to be especially careful if you're the following: 1. Male 2. White 3. Preppy Apparently NVL has been in operation for 35 years and used to be geared towards middle-aged (mostly black) patrons. In recent years however, it's have attracted young, Georgetown types which rumor has it, this audience sits unwell with the owners. I went with a group as one of my friends was visiting Seattle and had always seen NVL as a fun place to dance. The rest of us brought cash but our visiting friend kept his tab open and at the end of the night, his bill (mind you he only had 3 drinks) was nearly $200 dollars. Beers aren't more than $8 and so the group was incredibly perplexed with this astronomical bill. When we asked speak to the manager about the bill, the man at the bar promptly called the bouncer and kicked us out of the bar. No breakdown of the receipt, no explanation. I began to protest and then was called an offensive name by a female employee. Whaaat?!? I mean, COME ON, who does that?! It got to the point where tensions were high and we decided it wasn't worth putting up a fight. That incident put such an awful taste in my mouth and was beyond sketchy. When I later discussed it with a friend who is a long time resident of DC, she said that this isn't an uncommon occurrence at NVL especially you fall into the above three categories. She said, "oh gosh, I should have told you! It's common knowledge -- you don't keep your tab open for that exact reason!" This isn't normal. I was disgusted and have also submitted an inquiry to the better business bureau. I hardly ever write scathing reviews but New Vegas Lounge deserves this more than any place I've visited. If you still insist on visiting this establishment, please, for your own sake, leave your cards and valuables at home. read more

3.50 stars. While the Vegas Lounge isn't exactly my first choice for bars in the Logan Circle/U Street area, its value is truly maximized as a choice spot for a large group of friends. Usually, I go here when someone has a birthday (or similar special occasion). The advantages are that the cover charge ($10) keeps the place from becoming overcrowded and you have a decent live band at your disposal for the night. The major problem is a downright mediocre selection of premium beverages at an unjustified price point. Still, if you prefer decent soul music covers performed by a live band to outstanding free form jazz (which you can find at HR-57), you might find yourself right at home during a night at Vegas Lounge. read more

Wow. After hearing so much about Vegas Lounge I finally decided to check it out and definitely was not disappointed! Located just near the P Street Whole Foods in Logan Circle, this gem of a place has been around for years and is truly not to be missed! We arrived at 10pm on the dot and to our surprise the place was completely empty. Since we we're meeting up with friends we snagged the closest table to the music with 6 chairs. The band got started playing around 10:15 and the first half hour or so was pure bliss. We had a great view and we're able to get a few drinks with no trouble... Fast forward 45 minutes later and this place was POPPIN! I have never seen a bar flooded with more people in my entire life. As someone who is a bit claustrophobic I was BEYOND HAPPY that we had a table. We moved our jackets to the chairs on the wall side and ended up standing behind the table, claiming our territory, while still being able to see and enjoy the music. If I owned this establishment, I think I would bump up cover charges and allow a smaller cap of people to be let into the bar for the night. As someone who thinks about fire hazards, if there ever was a fire here, we'd all definitely be toast. read more

This place has potential. After a wonderful dinner at a local nearby restaurant the SO and I weren't ready to go home. It was around 10pm which is a tricky hour in DC. At this time the bars on 14th are still pretty vacant and usually the DJ there is experimenting with some weird tribal music. Not what we were looking for. We wanted to listen to some tunes and hang. I heard good things about the Vegas Lounge so we decided to try. $10 cover at the door. I asked the bouncer if it was crowded yet and if there were open tables before I paid. To which he told me to pay, go in and find out. Thanks, pal. So it's set up weird. Very long and to get to the bar you need to walk through the dance floor. And it smelled overwhelmingly like cleaning solution. But the band was AMAZING. We ordered the most ridiculous tasting vodka and cranberry (seriously stick to beer there) and go grab a seat. Maybe we went on a rando night but the tables were pushed into long rows, like cafeteria style. I asked one of the bouncers if he would mind if we moved one table away from the others so we could have a little privacy. He moves us by the door and trash can. fabs. So we (attempted to) drink our beverages and sat back and enjoyed the music. 11:30 hits and BLAM this place is packed to the seams with tipsy-rhythmless frat boys and their dates (I really hope this was a fluke evening and this is not always the clientele). But the music was SO good. We opted not to dance (too much dinner in tummy) but it was great just sitting back and enjoying the music and the hysterical people watching. read more

I'm a bit conflicted. The venue is great, the music is a ton of fun, and the drinks are decent, albeit not cheap. However, the bouncer described a gay couple that passed as "having a mental disorder" and stated that he would never trust homosexuals around his children. I fundamentally don't agree with his statements, but if he was simply acting as an individual, I would ignore his comments and move on. But he was representing the establishment, and spreading that kind of hate in 2015 is not only sad, but insulting to many of the customers of this establishment. The $10 cover didn't help with that problem. Since I needed to get a cab afterwards, I had to put up with the $20 credit card minimum. I feel obligated to warn the general public about this place. Saw a review a ways down about NVL scamming people who keep tabs open, and this is exactly what happened to me. They have this wrist-band system that is supposed to preclude problems like this. They give you a wristband with a number when you open a tab, and associate that number with your credit card. Only the person with the wristband can order drinks on that tab, so they say. Not true, instead they use this system to try to make disputing fraudulent charges impossible. Ended up getting charged for many drinks that were ordered neither by myself nor my friends. Getting an itemized receipt was like pulling teeth. Was called a cheapskate, in as many words, by the bartender (along with some things that don't bear repeating). Manager came over to "settle" things, and was far from diplomatic. Took some undeserved verbal abuse from him too. Truth be told, the place wasn't bad. But having bartenders trying to scam you tends to put a bad taste in your mouth. I get they're in the money-making business, but I'm not itching to go back to a place that treats its customers with such obvious disrespect. read more

I'm surprising there aren't more reviews for New Vegas Lounge. It's an awesome old school place for live oldies and dancing in Logan, right near the Whole Foods. We're talking 10 piece band style, and the band is basically ON the dancefloor, which makes it very interactive. Hey, there's a cover, and drinks aren't cheap... but you pay for what will definitely be an amazing performance. It's a great place for a night out with a big group. read more
