Talia's had a tough week - slipped disc and an ER trip on Wednesday after I got home from work. Recovery's going to take a while, and we'll be seeing some spine specialists. But I'm grateful for Veterinary Emergency Group's new Brookhaven location - they're fantastic, and their kindness to both Talia and me (anxiety and all!) means the world. They also sent the records to me and my vet and followed up with calls and texts checking in on her progress. As more pets and their parents arrived, I was impressed by how well they managed and treated each new intake patient. They had special room, including cat and reptile rooms. I'm thankful to have an amazing ER vet in Brookhaven that I can trust, if I ever need to take my furbabies in for an emergency visit 24/7. read more

Our sweet cat was feeling lethargic and began to avoid food lately, so we decided to visit this emergency vet clinic because they seemed to have positive reviews (it was also past midnight when we took him). They ran a few tests: bloodwork, FELV & FIV, and ultrasound, but ultimately found nothing of concern. I mentioned that he's been having trouble eating/chewing because it looked like his jaw would "twitch" and he would growl whenever he brushed against something. They just brushed it off to, "That's just how cats are when they're eating." Ok... He loves to eat and it was never an issue before, but I took their words anyway. They replenished his fluids with an IV and administered anti-nausea medicine, along with appetite stimulants. The vets didn't say anything about his pale gums or his right eye's third eyelid covering the eye constantly. In addition, the nurses were not helpful at all. During my visit, most of them were just sitting nearby on their phones instead of actively attending to my cat. Only one nurses and one doctor was attentive and my cat was the only one that was in the building. After the lab work was done, everything came back negative and that there was no "concerning symptoms" other than a fever. And yet, they didn't want to administer any medication because they didn't know if it was a viral or bacterial infection. Alright, fine, I asked them if there's anything to do be done in order to help him. They said to keep him indoors, under surveillance, and to monitor for any changes. The place sent us home with 2 more doses of appetite stimulants and a whooping bill of $811. $811. Just to be told that he's having a fever, with no medicine to help him and appetite stimulates to help him "eat". I sucked it up and told myself that's just how these cat vet visits are. Fast forward, he's been indoors ever since, been growing weaker and weaker, and becoming more and more lethargic. I've listened to the vet, gave him appetite stimulants, hand fed him, carried him to the litter because he was too weak to walk on his own, and did anything possible to keep him stable. I scheduled a vet visit at another place, until I found him this week: unresponsive, eyes blurred, and not reacting to any pain stimulation, like how he was previously. My boy passed away. Felt no more breaths, no more heartbeat. I couldn't help but wonder if I should've sent him to another emergency vet that night. read more

My wife and I visited VEG Brookhaven in mid-November when my dog was viciously attacked by another dog during a nighttime walk. It was an extremely traumatic experience for both me and my wife. While the nurses were all nice enough, our grievances primarily lie with the doctor who was responsible for our dog's care that night: Brina Baker. She was immediately unapproachable, despite the awfulness of the situation. I calmly tried to explain what happened as soon as she introduced herself, at which point she instantly cut me off, saying curtly that she would conduct her own examination of my dog. She then gave me a quick assessment of what she thought would need to be done with our dog that night, and then got visibly irritated when I asked her to repeat what she had told me to my wife, who was nearly inconsolable over the phone and on her way to VEG (our dog was bleeding and had suffered several bites from a large pit; he is a miniature goldendoodle). Her exact words were something to the effect of, "keep your wife on the phone so I don't have to keep repeating myself." The nurse took our dog away for some x-rays and diagnostics, the results of which were never explained to us, as our dog was immediately put under anesthesia and placed on the operating table. We did agree to have him put under and have his wounds seen to but didn't realize we'd be in the dark as to what the x-rays showed, and what exactly was going to be done to him. Dr. Baker had initially said that she was going to determine what she'd do after the x-rays were taken, because it was only then that we would see whether the attacking dog's bite marks had perforated the abdominal wall. When we tried to ask about what the prognosis was, and what Dr. Baker was doing to him--even after she had told us we could come up and watch them operate on him on the table--she tersely refused to explain anything until the operation was over, and no one bothered to explain how bad our dog's injuries were prior to that point either. DURING the operation, while my wife and I were sitting completely distraught in a corner of the ER, Dr. Baker laughed and joked with the nurses in the building while suturing our dog and installing a drain in his stomach. At one point, she loudly stated, "I've never done this before" to one of the other employees. Whether this referred to installing a drain or installing that specific kind of drain in that way, we did not know, but this was EXTREMELY troubling. At one point, she also shouted at a nurse an order for a certain amount of medication, which was relayed incorrectly back to her, and which she confirmed anyway. Luckily, a third nurse heard the discrepancy and corrected it, at which point Dr. Baker laughed it off flippantly. At this point, my wife and I had no faith in her, but decided to keep quiet since our dog was under her knife. Fast forward a couple of weeks, and the drain that Dr. Baker installed was put in so haphazardly (this was confirmed by both our primary vet and a specialist) that our dog developed an abscess and inflamed lymph nodes around where the procedure took place, which also led to a limp in his front left leg, due to further inflammation of lymph nodes in his arm resulting from infection. We have been told that the drain was not only too big but also oriented incorrectly. Not only did we pay nearly $2,500 the night that we visited VEG, but we were also emotionally tormented by Dr. Baker's flippancy, uncommunicativeness, and utter lack of compassion, as well as left with enduring health complications that we are still dealing with as a result of how she botched his wound treatment. At this point, we are evaluating our options as far as how to get justice for how we and our dog were treated, as we believe he was the victim of malpractice. For the amount of money we paid the night we came in (and VEG, as an ER, is extremely expensive), we deserved better from both a veterinary and an interpersonal perspective. read more

When my partner and I had an emergency with our elderly cat, Phoebe, we initially went to Saint Francis in Decatur since it was closest to us. After their lack or urgency towards us and others we felt uncomfortable and decided it was best for our baby to go somewhere else, even if it was further away. Let me tell you, we couldn't have been more lucky to find VEG. They are absolutely WONDERFUL. So personable and communicative, saw Phoebe right away and helped us to get her nice and healthy again. Came here after a recommendation we would need surgery and at the very best an endoscopy (minimum $3000 procedure). They charged us to look at the radiographs we had gotten at the vet before, which pissed me off, but the radiologist discovered that we might be able to get it out via vomiting. While I was mad we even got to this point at an emergency vet, the vet and nurses were very patient, kind, caring, and didn't jump to the most expensive option which I really appreciated. When all was said and done the visit, charge to look at the preexisting images, and medicine for vomiting, it was around $700. read more

I brought my dog in on a fatal condition & i understand things cost, but after they realized i wasn't in the best financial situation, immediately begun receiving the cold shoulder ( like i said i understand services cost ) . Once we came to the unfortunate realization that my dog cannot receive help , the process of euthanasia was sped up & rushed . Then kept making it seem like my dog isn't dying . A McDonalds was right next door, no line. all i wanted was to give my pet one last snack, one last sense of smell of ' tasty ' dog food, they told me i couldn't even do that. So yeah, receive services for your pet elsewhere for the best care, these people will see your pet passing away & make it about them. My cat wasn't doing well. I dropped by on a Saturday and we were promptly serviced. The vet and nurses were extremely attentive and treated my cat so well. They ran diagnostics, blood work and sent me home with medicine and sample cat food. It cost be about $650 total and took less than two hours. They are phenomenal. I'm in cat rescue, so unfortunately there are times when we come across a cat in crisis who needs immediate and often complex help. While VEG does have the types of double take prices that all emergency health clinics have, what I appreciate about VEG is that their Vets for walk in emergencies aren't the doctors who are fresh out of school, only work occasionally, or new to the clinic. Too often in the past, it was clear at some other Vet ERs that it was the B team that was put on overnight or emergency visits. We'd have to remind them to take temperatures or blood pressure, Push HARD for X-rays or blood work to be done, or generally realize that the emergency team had a sense of "what will happen, happens" Happily, I've found none of that to be true with VEG. They are as committed to the survival and best health solutions for their patients as I could hope for - regardless if it's a found pet or an owned pet, whether it's the end of their shift or beginning, whether the test or procedure is a pain in the butt or simple. It's a team that listens and wants the best for the animal during a medical crisis And for that I am, well maybe not happy , but definitely willing to pay a premium. If it's an actual emergency, I'm okay with paying emergency prices (And they have helped me determine if it's an emergency bring in right away, monitor, or if the cat needs to go elsewhere to see a specialist immediately). My 26 year old African Grey Parrot was struggling to breathe late at night. I'd used VEG 24hr ER for my cat there before and knew they were so very compassionate! The nearest 24 hour bird vet was all the way in Athens. I knew that Even though VEG DOES NOT HAVE ANY EXOTIC BIRD AVIAN VETS they would at least give him much needed oxygen and with great care. That's exactly what they did! They kept him in the hospital's oxygen room all night and his private nurse checked on him every hour. I couldn't sleep at all that night from worrying about my baby, so I called at 4:00am and asked the man that answered the phone to go check on him and then I asked him to wave at my sweetie. He did. My best friend got the best attention possible from vets that knew little about birds. However, they called an avian vet for a variety of questions until midnight. I cannot thank them enough and will forever be grateful for what they were able to do for my best friend. I would do it all over again and I highly recommend VEG to anyone!!! read more

I would not recommend this vet clinic for emergencies. I brought my 15-year-old dog in at 9:30 PM last sept because something was clearly wrong--she couldn't open her mouth, her jaw was tight, and she was zoning in and out. She couldn't walk, so I had to carry her into the car. We mentioned that she had gotten into the trash earlier in the day but didn't think much of it at the time. The vet recommended an X-ray and bloodwork. We decided to start with the bloodwork, which came back normal. By this time, my dog was starting to walk, although she was very wobbly. She also urinated in the clinic, which is extremely uncommon for her. They proceeded with an X-ray and found a beer bottle cap in her stomach from the trash. At this point, it was already 11 PM, and we were facing a $1,400 bill. We were exhausted, having barely slept the night before due to work, and stressed about my dog's condition. The vet strongly pushed for an expensive procedure, quoting $2,500, and if that didn't work, it would be $5,000 for further intervention. Since my dog is a large, older breed, we asked for time to consider our options and sleep on it, hoping the bottle cap might pass naturally. Instead of respecting our decision, the vet sent in another doctor and a nurse to guilt us, claiming we were causing our dog pain and would likely kill her by not proceeding with the procedure immediately. They also mentioned a payment plan--with a staggering 16% interest--when we voiced concerns about the cost. The guilt-tripping continued as I sat there crying, overwhelmed by both the situation and the pressure they were putting on us. Finally, we requested at least an IV for hydration since she was dehydrated. Somehow, by the time we left around 12:30 AM, the bill had climbed to $1,900. The whole time, I noticed at least eight nurses sitting around doing nothing, which made me wonder if the high costs were due to inefficiency or unnecessary staffing. The next day, I called around to other clinics and found Shepherd Animal Hospital, which quoted me $2,000 for the entire procedure, including X-rays--a far cry from the exorbitant prices here. My dog received the care she needed without the emotional manipulation we experienced at this clinic. In summary, this clinic seems more focused on maximizing profits than providing compassionate care. They used guilt and fear to pressure us into expensive treatments instead of respecting our decision to weigh our options. If you're in an emergency situation, I'd recommend finding a clinic that prioritizes your pet's wellbeing without exploiting your emotions or finances. A kitten got hit by a car in front of our home. A neighbor found it alive, but not moving and didn't know what to do with it so she called me. I had heard of the Veterinary Emergency Group from other neighbors, so I immediately called them and explained the situation. They told me to bring it right in. Since I have cats, I grabbed a cat carrier, put the kitty in it, and took it to the ER. They got to it immediately. Although the kitty didn't survive, they were attentive and caring. The Vet said she would see us when she got off of a call - she's still chatting with colleagues. So far, if you have a true pet emergency - choose another location. BTW.... This animal ED is amazing! I brought my sweet 6 year old Siberian husky in for respiratory distress. Dr. Whitmire and his team were amazing and quickly diagnosed my sweet boy with a spontaneous pneumothorax. They explained everything, including pricing, and completed what was necessary and what I was okay with. They put a chest tube in and contacted UGA teaching hospital to have my sweet boy transferred for surgery. They were extremely knowledgeable, efficient, and compassionate. I am so thankful for this facility and staff. I could not recommend them, they especially Dr. Whitmire, enough! read more

I've been to VEG four times in the last three weeks. I have two cats with cancer and have a total of 10 cats. Having this many cats over the years, I know what good vet care looks like and actively seek it out. I have also had three Maine Coons who have died of cancer so I have a reasonable idea of when to be concerned. The first three visits with Drs. Turner and Franco were great. I was kept in the loop as the visit progressed and they were both friendly and addressed my concerns. Everyone was warm and kind throughout. We had a great experience and left feeling confident that my cat had been given the best care VEG could provide. I understand this type of care is costly and cost was not a factor or an issue. It seemed cheaper than Blue Pearl. This last time I saw Dr. Baker she was dismissive at best. My cat Calypso has a baseball-sized mass of cancer under her front leg and we are scheduled to see the oncologist tomorrow. During the day today, Calypso became lethargic to the point of being barely responsive, so I brought her the VEG, especially given the great care I had gotten previously. Dr. Baker said the lethargy was because of the gabapentin I was giving her but didn't seem to understand that I had been giving her gabapentin for a week, so that was not a change. She offered and I accepted a pain injection. During my other visits, I was kept in the loop but after our conversation, Dr. Baker and the one other person just walked away and we waited. The table Calypso was on was not wiped down after we got off of it. We were there for 20 minutes longer, so I would be concerned about cleanliness (there was no indication that we had been there, like a used towel.) There were 5-6 medical staff in the back having a loud, good time. One was walking around with a cup of tea, and others were gathered around a computer talking about something on the screen. Party time! I accepted the quote and they gave Calypso her shot (missing the vein the first time) and then they walked off. I got a text on my phone, paid the bill, told one of the people I paid, and left. What a sad experience. There was no closure to the whole thing. What I had wanted was confirmation that Calypso would be OK through tomorrow's oncology visit and perhaps someone who seemed to care. Dr. Baker is cold and lacks the social skills needed to be a doctor in this type of environment. There is one more key item of note for the reader - at the time I was at VEG, there were no other patients there. So, it's not like my experience was because Dr. Baker needed to move on and see other patients. That fact speaks for itself. Before I visit in the future, I'll call to check and see which dr. is on call, and if its Baker, I'll go on to Blue Pearl. read more

I took my male cat in because he had a urinary blockage. I noticed he was having a horrible time using the litter box and was in some serious pain. I rushed him to VEG on the recommendation of not only my regular VET, but also the reviews I had read, and my experience. The first estimate was approx. $1k then after further evaluation that estimate jumped to approx. $5k, as a max charge. With my past experience going to VEG, and their estimate range, I didn't question the big jump this time.   After they started the procedure to try and get him stable, I received a phone call that they again had to add more charges, bringing a new estimate up to almost 10K. Their main suggestion was a surgery that would cost over $6,000 to bypass the male anatomy and have him urinate from a different exit. Again, this was an emergency, in the middle of the night, so I knew it was urgent, but all I also felt very helpless because they already him sleepy and ready for the procedure.   Basic resolution was, I rushed up there at about 2am to talk with the ER doctor face to face to try and understand these drastic charges. As emotional as this was, we were able to settle on some pricing for the moment and that ultimately allowed me to get him stable enough to transfer to a specialist the next day.   After having him with the specialist, I was advised that my cat did NOT need that drastic surgery. He was diagnosed with Cystitis.  The specialist educated me on how dangerous the surgery was that VEG was suggesting. I had no idea honestly. He said they only do that type of surgery as a very last result. And yes, I would have taken him to a different ER, but I was lead to believe my cat wouldn't make it to another ER.   My biggest complaint, and what I want anyone reading this review to hear is, I can't get in touch with anyone at a home office to discuss this problem. I felt taken advantage of because of how life threatening this situation was. I was basically at their mercy. There is no information on the website of how to contact the corporate office so l am only left with this forum. Hopefully they will contact me.   Again, my complaint isn't with the facility itself, I do believe we are lucky to have emergency options close to us. And the doctors there were very compassionate, but they ultimately have no say in billing or financial charges. This is a corporate issue, and I told the doctor that night I understood that. I was truly being held financially hostage because my cat probably wouldn't have made it without some of their emergency help.   I just feel taken advantage of financially in a very emotional and very vulnerable time. read more

Called to explain my cat's health issue and the receptionist connected me with Dr. Franco. Dr. Franco listened to me describe my cat's symptoms of sneezing with clear discharge from eyes, but eating and drinking fine, and acting normally. Dr. Franco agreed with my suspicion that is was a feline herpes virus flare up. She said I should continue to monitor my cat at home and let the virus run its course, but if anything worsened to bring her in. Super appreciate the phone consultation and saving my cat from the stress of an emergency visit. The emergency vet clinic I usually use doesn't offer phone consultations so this was a great bonus. read more

All the vet assistants I dealt with were great but Dr. Baker and Dr. Rogers were who I felt with for his Doctors - both phenomenal in answering my questions and going above and beyond to ensure I had all the information I needed for my sweet boy. It was a night and day difference from the last place I went to. Prepare for a bit more of an expensive visit (I think that also comes with it being an ER) but it's worth it to know your baby is in good hands. I'm not one to write reviews but feel the need to. I HIGHLY (without a doubt) RECOMMEND. As I try to make it short and sweet, here's why from my experience: 1) they Prioritize the health of your pet (especially over financials). 2) they Communicate very well & never leave you having to call or guess how your pet is doing. Plus, you can speak directly with the doctor at all times!!!! 3) they CARE and personalize your pet's care. 4) you have the ability to see your pet, whenever wanting! 5) the team there is absolutely committed and phenomenal. I mean, I can't even say I had preferences in any staff member - they were all very pleasant! 6...i can go on & on but you get the gist.. Our newly adopted rescue Cocoa whose diagnosis with pneumonia (moderate) was transferred here after receiving good recommendations and we are thankful that we had her receive care here. Within 48 hours we saw MAJOR improvements. If you are in need of an emergency hospital, don't think twice, go here! I love VEG! I have brought injured wildlife to them before but I had my first experience taking my own pet to one today. (My dog had a UTI- she's fine!) Everyone who works there was really nice to me AND my dog (to be fair, we are universally charming) and I could tell we were in good hands with Dr. Klapko right away. My dog was surprisingly calm there and I'm not sure what to attribute that to but it was definitely a plus. I would almost expect her to be more anxious given the open concept. Pricing is pretty standard for an emergency vet but a way better experience than I'm used to. I'm going to continue to recommend them to friends and family and will be looking up the nearest VEG next time I have an after hours need or emergency. read more

I completely panicked when I found blood in my cat's urine on a Tuesday night around 7:00pm. I quickly googled "emergency vets near me" and this was the first business to pop up. I called them immediately and they were so calm and helpful. I brought him in around 7:30pm and was there until 11:30pm. I won't lie, it was pretty expensive, but I expected that with a 24/7 emergency clinic. Every single staff member was so kind and attentive to me and my cat, and they did everything they could to figure out how to help him. The next day, I gave Dr. Baker a call to discuss his progress and she was so kind and helpful. I highly recommend this group!! read more

DO NOT COME HERE. Staff is extremely rude/pretentious, just to be seen is almost $200, and anything additional is going to be 3-4 times the cost of a standard vet. I understand Emergency Vets are going to be a little pricier but this place is ridiculous. On top of that, the doctors are very young and inexperienced. They took care of my baby and us as we navigated the worst two days of our lives. They are not the cheapest but they let my husband sleep in the room with our dog as he received treatment. They calmly explained all our options to us as many times as we needed and answered all questions. They did not pressure us to make any decision and treated us with the most respect as we made the hardest decision of our lives. my dog got into some chocolate he found at my moms house. i immediately got in my car and took him to veterinary emergency group because it was a saturday. i've been here before and dr hughes was amazing. staff is amazing. but i would absolutely call ahead and make sure dr turner is not working. unfortunately she was the doctor on at the time she was so beyond not concerned, had ZERO urgency spent an HOUR trying to "research" the correct chocolate bunny my dog ate. comes back to tell me it might be "too late" to induce vomiting and he may have to be hospitalized so they can watch his heart rate over the next few days. like are you fucking for real? you know the dog ate chocolate. the shot is right there. you take an hour to do what takes all of 3 minutes which she didn't even do! she just had to give the "ok" to the nurse. i said that's absolutely not happening and being that this is time sensitive let's get going. she sends the nurse, he throws up which looked to be a lot of chocolate. they said we had to wait again on this sad excuse for a vet to put my sweet dog out of his misery and give him an anti nausea shot so he stops gagging and being uncomfortable. she refuses to come back for 2 HOURS and says my dog is not an urgent case i watch at least 10 other patients come and go. all she had to do was OKAY the nurse that she could give him the anti nausea shot so he would stop sitting there dry heaving for hours but she didn't care. that he was sitting there uncomfortable!!!! what kind of vet are you??? to walk around a dog and continue to ignore him when he's throwing up nothing at this point and not just allow the nurse to administer the shot????? this woman does not care about the animals ill tell you that much. so after 2 hours and 30 minutes of being neglected and over looked i told them since i paid i'm leaving cause this shot is not coming and by this point my sweet dog probably rather feel like shit in the comfort of his own home because there literally nothing happening they told me it was ILLEGAL to get up and leave. lol. i left after 3 hours of this vet blatantly ignoring me. other patients said they were going somewhere else too for the same reason. don't put your dogs life in this woman's hands she should lose her job. read more
