We have been visiting Varsity Inn for nearly 25 years now and have always enjoyed it. We visited a couple days ago, and food and service was very good, as usual. Wjat was upsetting is that we noticed they are now adding hidden costs to your meal. I had a steak sandwich with onions and peppers. They charged me $2 for onions and $2 for peppers, adding an extra $4 for the meal. The added cost was not indicated on the menu, nor did the server disclose it. Another person changed out their two slices of standard toast for a slice of whole grain. That was a $1 added charge. Visitors should check their bills closesly since Varsity Inn seems to now want to add a charge for any little thing. The following night, I had a hamburger at another restaurant, and there was not an added charge for onion. Looks like we'll go elsewhere so we don't get hit with added, hidden charges. read more

Disappointed and Discriminated - Denied Entry Due to My Service Animal I'm deeply disappointed with my recent experience at Varsity Inn. I arrived with my fully trained and clearly identified service animal, who assists me with a medical condition. Despite calmly explaining the legal rights surrounding service animals, the staff/owner refused us entry, claiming "no pets allowed." This is not only incorrect--it's a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Businesses are legally required to allow service animals that are trained to perform tasks related to a person's disability. The refusal showed a clear lack of training and understanding of the law, as well as a lack of basic compassion and respect. What makes this even more frustrating is that the restaurant has a sign right on the door that says "Service Animals Only". Clearly, they understand the law well enough to post it, but not enough to actually follow it. The hypocrisy and lack of proper staff training are extremely concerning. I had been looking forward to dining here (again as we were allowed to dine with my service dog here the year before) but instead left feeling humiliated and frustrated. I hope the owner takes this seriously and educates their staff so no one else has to go through this experience. Until then, I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone--especially those in the disability community. We left and walked a few blocks over to "Hooked on Breakfast" where we were more than welcome and enjoyed an amazing breakfast. read more

We stopped in for lunch today (Saturday) around 1pm. They close at 2 so we got there in time. There's street parking. I tried their famous tomato soup and it was creamy, covered with a layer of cheese (kind of like French onion soup) with a big crouton. I only got a cup but couldn't had a huge bowl and still wanted more. We had sandwiches from their menu that were all tasty plus excellent onion rings. Great atmosphere with all of the college pennants hanging on the walls. I could see how this would be a fun place in the summer. The service was friendly. Spent a nice October day on the OC boardwalk and decided to grab a meal somewhere new. Name like Varsity Inn makes it tempting to try it out. Wait staff was very nice and seated us right away. Greeted with waters and a very nice run down of the menu & specials. Inside there are plenty of seating available to make wait not long. You can people watch from the bar top seating facing the street. Plenty of different options to choose from and from the look of the dishes that were coming out of the kitchen, they all looked delicious. The breakfast options seemed to be the highlight. The quesadilla was packed with great flavor chicken, tomatoes & cheese. Crisp on the outside with sour cream dippings on the side. The tomato soup was excellent and some of the best soups I've tasted. On top is a thick layer of cheese and inside is garlic bread chunks inside the thick cream tomato soup. 'The Taylor variety has a tangy smoked flavor where the Trenton variety is milder tasting. Although Taylor Pork Roll is available in large and small rolls and thick and thin slices, Trenton Pork Roll is only available in 6 pound rolls.' The above information is for the very rude man that thought bringing out a 6lb roll of Trenton Pork Roll to our table to prove my mother wrong was professional and appropriate. He was in the wrong on so many levels. Only the second time at Varsity Inn in my 45 years of coming to Ocean City. We have just had breakfast at the Varsity in and it did not disappoint. The food is delish outs and the waffles hit the spot. Good coffee also. Service there is great, friendly and accommodating. I like the open air feel with the big windows that open up to bar top seating with lots of air so it doesn't feel stuffy. We will be definitely be coming back to Varsity Inn. read more

Went with my dad for breakfast at 8, we really enjoyed sitting outside at the big garage windows and barstools. Food came quickly and really hit the spot. My dad had Aunt Helen's Favorite omelet (has kielbasa in it!) and I had Breakfast Special #1. Pancakes were great and my dad said the breakfast potatoes were nice and crispy. My husband and I were in town for the OC annual boat parade and even booked a room at The Cove Inn. Right next door is the breakfast place Varsity Inn, which having friends who vacation here annually have always spoke about this place, being around for 50 plus years! We arrived at 10:30 and there was tons of families waiting outside so my first thought was a very long wait. But nope, we were seated at the garage style windows within 10 mins and luckily it was a beautiful day and not too hot. Our waitress, Natalie was super sweet and right on top everything, providing coffee refills, more napkin's etc. I ordered the greek florentine and my husband the egg benedict and both were delecious and come with breakfast potatoes! When told server (owners son) we didn't get soup the comment was ...don't know what's going on in the kitchen... no apology just walked away. Asked to speak to manager (who is the owner) And as an apology gave us a soup to go. An hour later went to have the soup which he gave me with shredded cheese to put on top. Grilled cheese was so oily and unfortunately the soup was only tepid so the cheese didn't melt. Service was extremely slow. Unfortunately I don't think we will be returning. Varsity Inn is a staple for my family every year. Unfortunately this year was less than stellar. The food is good and the wait wasn't long, but the booth we sat in had large hollow sections and was extremely uncomfortable. In addition, my sister-in-law ordered some Cinnamon French Toast that sounded great, but it ended up containing raisins and nowhere could we find this fact mentioned. She has issues eating raisins in food and was upset to see them only after cutting into the meal. Also, several meals were supposed to come with Cinnamon Butter but simply didn't. This wouldn't have been the biggest issue but they insisted we pay for the extra food even though it wasn't stated it contained something she couldn't eat. If it was a matter of us not liking the food and wanting something different I'd understand, but she could not have the original meal due to their incompetence in providing the necessary information about the food. I'm hoping in the future, the menu can be clarified to either contain all the information, or so that if someone wants something extra in their food (i e. Raisins) that this is something that needs to be asked for, rather than an unwritten default. read more

I live here. I have been coming here forever and have loved it forever. I was in last week and man has it changed. It's expensive (everything is nowadays) but it just was not that good. Got a special burger and fries. Also had the tomato soup. The soup was good. The burger average at best. Like the whopper is better. And the fries were a JOKE. they were literally the worst fries I have ever had. Over fried, over coated and even looked gross. The wife had a soup and grilled cheese and it was fine. But my meal was a joke honestly. For the price and quality such a shame. Will I be back I'm not sure. There are better places. And it pains me to say that because this was my place. My wife and I stopped by last minute as we were looking for an easy lunch. We both chose the cheese steak, which came with crinkle fries. It was the first day for the girl who took our order. The picture of the cheese steak had lettuce and tomato. I said, please may you put the lettuce and tomatoes on the side because I like my cheesesteaks simple, but I could use the vegetables. Takeout order came within fifteen minutes, included no lettuce or tomato, no napkins, no ketchup, and no utensils (not that I needed them). Everything tasted fine, although forgettable. Varsity is always a go-to when my family visits the shore. They have great prices, service, and atmosphere. We have now been served twice by Mel, who is our favorite. Last year, I joked that my school's pennant was too hidden by the soda machine, and to my delight, by the next time we visited, Mel made sure it was more visible! What a nice little spot. Saw a line forming here one morning while on a recent visit to OC and knew we had to come back and give it a try. And when we did we were not disappointed for breakfast. The kids loved the Belgian waffle and my wife and I enjoyed omelets. Anyone knows that potatoes at most joints are hit or miss and these were a hit. Nicely browned, crisp and lightly salted.
