"I'll eat takeout food by the river any day." Our offices were by the food courts by the river and we went to this food court to save time and grab a quick bite for lunch. We decided to eat at Vapiano, it was pretty busy and the wait was longish. I decided to get a Poke Bowl with cooked salmon in soy sauce and assorted sides : edamame, avocado, wakame salad and mango topped with red bird eye chili in a bed of quinoa (€ 25,50) - I can't get over how expensive food in Zurich is -- 30 bucks for a food court meal !!! I did like my Poke Bowl - it was solid - light, fresh and pretty delicious BUT pricey and didn't blow my mind. What made the meal "priceless" for me is sitting by the river and eating the meal with colleagues. Gave me some time to de-stress after long meetings and being stuck inside the office. Will I eat here again - absolutely for the convenience of location and the huge selection -- I would still struggle with a sticker shock on food prices. read more

I'm told that this is a chain from Germany, but the Italian food made to order seems pretty good to me. You get a card as you walk in and scan all your purchases (salad, pizza, pasta, drinks, dessert) as you choose. For pizza orders, they give you a pager to notify you when it's ready. Cozy seats with a fireplace upstairs and a nice view to Sihlcity shopping center. The whole-wheat pasta is also really good. Reasonable prices for Zürich, and I like how they have a little bowl of mini gummy bears on the way out. :) read more

All Vapianos are the bomb. You can get a delicious pizza, pasta, or salad for a reasonable price here, and they're usually quite large. I like that when you order pasta they make it in front of you and you're able to tell them if you want more pepper, onion... etc. The people are usually quite friendly and chill, and the place is always clean and nice. We got free bread with our pasta too! And it was especially awesome bread... It gets busy at lunch, but for the most part the tables turn over quite quickly. A 1-star experience, getting an extra star for the professional handling of an issue by the manager. I've never been a fan of the concept to a great extent, mostly because you ALWAYS have to wait in line for so long. These line cooks are so slow! They should all be sent to New York to watch how line cooks work there. And the pizza takes 15 minutes. Good luck enjoying your meal together at the same time as your colleagues. They'd be smart to bring in some 1000 degree ovens like so many places have in the US. They cook a pizza beautifully in wood-fired brick ovens in a minute and a half!! And they're never very friendly. They're all like freaking robots, making an unpleasant experience even worse.This time I went to pick up my pizza and was met with a "Nummer?" after 1, yes 1 second, he says again, "NUMMER!?" in a drill sargeant tone. Super rude and not something I feel I should pay for. Yes, we're in Switzerland where the customer is always wrong, but the customer is not a dog! So I brought this to the attention of the manager who then comped my entire meal. The way it should be. Had she not done this I can guarantee I would never go back. Since she did... I'll think about it... The food is pretty good, but the service and overall experience doesn't make it worth my while. read more

My fiancé worked in Stuttgart, the birthplace of Vapiano (gasp! in Germany not Italy), and so has a major soft spot for the huge chain and to be honest, other than the Zürich prices, the pasta is good/reliable (although not authentically Italian, as you can imagine). The arrabbiata was not authentic and lacked any spice but the pasta was cooked al dente. The "bruschetta" was pathetic with only a few slices of bread and some tomatoes on top. Again, had to indulge the fiancé but the pastas were of a more acceptable portion size. Being in Sihlcity, this place is always packed and there's always a line at the cooking station where you go up and order what you want whether that's appetizers, drinks or pastas. The cooks are very efficient and I felt kind of bad for them because I'm sure some of them are aspiring chefs but all the menu items have set ingredients all laid out in front of the cook (albeit fresh) so it's pretty mindless work and if a chef can't be creative as he/she is an artist, what is he/she? Anyway, with more reasonably priced menus in Germany, maybe it's worth a pit stop but overall, I wouldn't recommend Vapiano in Zurich unless you're in a real bind. But there aren't a lot of good alternatives to eating out, Italian or otherwise in this city so idk, it's the neverending eating-out dilemma I find myself in in this city. The bathrooms are really nice but that shouldn't be surprising for Switzerland. There is a huge outdoor and upstairs seating area with benches and umbrellas outside and a casual but clean/nice setting upstairs. A really nice touch is fresh herbs right on the tables that diners can pick right off the potted plants! (And the EV olive oil and balsamic vinegar at each table) read more

It's a neat idea for a hip, eating space- just use a card to charge your food at each place. There's a pasta/risotto station, pizza and salad too- with a bar on each floor, a beer's not far from you! Order your food, your buzzer goes off when it's able then pick up your food, and take it to your table. You pay at the end, after you're all done- grab a hand full of gummy bears for your way home. And not too badly priced, for the two of us we had luck: for 2 pizzas, 2 salads, and 2 beers, it was under 60 bucks! read more

Typical restaurant where swiss people go when they dont know where to go. The staff is very quick. You can see them work in front of ya. The food is sooooo fresh. And tasty. They got a large menue. From pastas to pizzas to öasagnas they got it all. No complaints. read more

I really, really do not like Vapiano food, especially pasta. Yeah, I know, I am Italian, so I am all snob about how pasta should be cooked, for how much time and so on, right? Not really - I have tried many faux-Italian restaurants and chains abroad and totally understand tuning Italian cuisine to foreign tastes, and have nothing against that. But, but... why consistently overcook pasta (more noticeable with long pasta), put too much cheese on it and make it so gluey? :( Pizza is also bad, but not so tragic, and everything else I tried is average. read more

Great restaurant with a great concept in a great location. My family and I love coming to Vapiano. The location in the Sihlcity Shopping Complex is super convenient to reach by bus, by tram or by train. We often meet here for dinner and then everyone can get home easily from here. The menu is not very extensive but definitely solid. Everything is cooked to order. My personal favorite is the Surf & Turf salad. I've had it quite a few times and enjoyed it every time. The beef and prawns are grilled and put on top of a bed of leafy salad accompanied with grilled fresh vegetables such as eggplants, yellow and red bell peppers. The whole thing is topped with sliced parmesan and their own house made mustard salad dressing which really makes this salad a home run. I am craving it right now just from writing about it! At Fr. 24.90, it's definitely not cheap, but worth it to me. The pizzas on the other hand, are less than stellar. I've tried a couple of different ones, they're just ok, nothing spectacular and really on the salty side. The pastas are very nice, house made and fresh with savory sauces. The desserts are also all house made. Comes in two sizes, mostly delectable. A great finish to an enjoyable meal. Most of the dishes are prepared in front of you in a speedy fashion. Servers are friendly. There are a lot of seating space on the second level than the ground level. The only drawback is the Monday to Friday lunch rush. The place gets packed to the gills from all the office employees in nearby buildings you can hardly find a table upstairs or downstairs or outside. Best to arrive before noon or after 1pm if you like to have conversation over a nice meal without having to yell at each other. read more

A really great concept, where you move from station to station to order food. The benefit of this is you get to see the food made freshly before your eyes. There are lots of things to chose from at the pizza, pasta, salad and dessert stations. It's clear from watching the cooks prepare meals that the ingredients are top quality and very fresh. Seating can be a little, uh, "cozy" and might mean sharing tables with other people. Compared with most of Zurich, the prices at Vapiano's are very affordable and the food is quite delicious! The manager was extremely rude, aggressive, and hostile. We ordered two pizzas for takeaway. We had a bottle of water that we brought with us because it is currently 99 degrees. We were waiting for our pizzas, that we ordered for takeaway/to go when the manager approached us and demanded that we throw away the bottle of water (even though it was closed and we weren't drinking it). We explained that we were just waiting for our pizza to go. He then began yelling that we are in his restaurant and we are not allowed to bring in an outside beverage. We left. We did not get our food. He then yelled at us in front of everyone that if we "Americans return to (his) restaurant he is calling the police." A great chain which has been fairly consistent so far. Located right by the cinema, it's super convenient for a bite before your film. The restaurant is casual and has pizza, pasta/risotto, and salad bars, with food made to order. I always go for the same dish, so can't guarantee that the other meals they have to offer are as good. But the menu has lots of variety, so I'm sure you'll find something you will like. I highly recommend the Granchi di Fiume with added onion, garlic, and plenty of chilli... and of course Conchiglie pasta. read more
