I have been going to this salon for quite a few years and Heidi always does such a great job suggesting what I should do with my hair.....and she's always right! This place is fantastic! I came to get a haircut and balayage for my hair. Alexis was amazing and sweet. She knew exactly what I wanted and did everything under four hours. The place was also very clean and they had plastic barriers between all the seats and all the hair washing stations. I have been going to Vanity for a while now and have been very happy with each appointment. The employees are all welcoming, kind and care about their clients. I even saw one of the employees walk a customer out to their car so she wouldn't slip and fall in the snow. I booked this salon for my wedding in August for hair and makeup services. I booked a trial, attended the trial and at the time of that trial put down a down deposit of over $200 and paid over $200 for my trial itself. This was all fine, as I was expecting these services to be fulfilled. I was contacted after my trial that I was accidentally booked with the wrong stylist and the stylist I had seen would not be available for my wedding day. I was assured that I would receive "a discount" on my second trial. I mentioned that it was okay that I had to come for a second trial as I had a few changes I wanted to make for my hair and makeup. The trial was booked for a few weeks out. The day of my trial I called to confirm the appointment and I clarified that my trial would be complimentary as I had already paid for a trial, but was booked with the wrong person on the salon's error. I was told "well you had changes you wanted to make to your hair and makeup anyways so you would've paid for another trial anyways." I stated yes, with the artist I had already seen, and also stated that I may have not even booked another trial, just discussed those changes with her. Because I had not even had an initial trial with the artist who was supposed to be doing my hair and makeup on my wedding day and hadn't even been able to determine if I liked how my hair and makeup came out with the other artist, I felt as though the service should be complimentary. I was basically told that another trial wasn't really necessary and I didn't have to come. I ended up canceling my second trial after being treated like it was a complete nuisance to ask that my trial be covered related to the salon's mistake of booking me with the wrong artist. After this, I emailed the salon with some notes about my hair and makeup which were never responded to, tried to call on multiple occasions (leaving voicemails) which were also ignored. When my calls and voicemails went ignored for almost a week, I asked my friend to call to see if maybe it was their phone systems not working and my friend's call was answered on the second ring. I attempted to call again, on my phone directly after that call and got no response. Within the next 10 minutes I then called on my work phone, which was picked up on the second ring and I was able to schedule a call with Heidi (the owner, I understand and the correct stylist) for 4pm that afternoon. 4pm came and went with no call from Heidi, and no other contact from the salon. I understand that salons are busy, but to ignore your clientele who has already invested a large amount of money in the services being booked is unacceptable, as is to miss a scheduled call and not reach out on any platform, rebooking a time or apologizing that the call was unable to be completed. That night I decided I would rather cancel all services than scramble and have constant anxiety trying to deal with this salon. I sent an email, which was unanswered until my fiancé called the salon to confirm that my email was received, which after I finally received a response email stating that my deposit would be refunded but they didn't think they would be able to refund my initial trial but that they would get back to me today. Which of course never happened. I never received any response from the salon today despite being told a confirmation of my refund would be emailed to me today for the deposit and they would get back to me about the cost of the trial. I hope to get a resolution with those charges with this salon as I truly believe it's the least they could do after their errors and blatant unprofessionalism while I have to look for a makeup and hair artist to book 68 days prior to my wedding due to their complete lack of communication. All in all, save yourself the stress and book with someone else for your special day. read more

I reached out to Vanity regarding my wedding hair/makeup and they have been incredible responsive and helpful since our first interaction. I decided to move forward with a trial at Vanity because the pricing was so reasonable, and they blew me away. Alexis took a few photos I showed her and replicated exactly what I envisioned for my hair better than I could have told her. The airbrush makeup was flawless and even 8 hours later when I got home it held up beautifully. She was extremely kind but also not overwhelming - a grounding energy I can already tell will be welcome on the big day! They have a wedding coordinator, Allison, who manages all the behind the scene details which makes me feel confident that everything will go off without a hitch. This salon is everything you can ask for!! Such a beautiful salon, very well kept, clean, spacious and beautifully lit and decorated. All of the staff are friendly and gracious, you're welcomed with a hello from staff, and sometimes even the owners friendly dog Pete, along with an array of drink offers. The bathrooms are clean and easily accessible to all. Parking is paid, but there's plenty available within walking distance. I've had two visits with Erica now and both were great experiences, she's friendly, peppy and makes your salon visit enjoyable. Best salon I've ever been to, and the only I've wanted to come back to! 1000% recommend to anyone looking for a new hairdresser. Heidi did my hair and did a fabulous job! She's a great hairstylist and was able to give me the exact color I wanted ! She amazing at what she does. She also gave me a super cute Bob- everyone has been complimenting my hair ever since ! I had a Lash lift & tint by Alexis which was also amazing! I have long lashes but just needed some lifting and this was perfect. The whole session was relaxing and pretty quick and I was able to walk out of there with beautiful and lifted lashes! My wife has gone to this salon for about 4 years. Her current stylist, Grace, is wonderful and would highly recommend her. That being said, she had an appointment at 10 am in the morning and had to call and cancel at 6 pm the night before due to being sick. 2 days later we find a $54 charge on our CC. Figuring this must be a mistake she called and spoke with Heidi, the owner. After argumentatively defending her "30% cancellation policy" she said she would credit it on the next service. This was because she "didn't know" how to credit back the CC. Years of being in business and she can't figure out how to return the money? Then it came to light that this credit money would come out of the stylists' pay as, she claims, this policy is their's. My wife cancelled all further appointments and put a dispute on the CC. So, for $54 dollars the stylist lost a 4 year customer who, I might add, NEVER missed an appointment and had nothing but good things to say about her. 3 major points: 1. Keeping a CC on file without asking permission and charging the same. 2. Applying a policy for which the customer was not notified. 3. Argumentative behavior over what should have been a slam dunk opportunity to delight a customer with a simple apology and throw in some inexpensive perk to insure a recommendation and an ongoing relationship. The real loser here is the employee, Grace, that lost a client until she moves to another salon (Grace, give a call when you move, we do NOT believe this was your decision as Heidi claimed it was). read more

I have been going here for some time now and Heidi is amazing. When I wanted to stop coloring my hair and go gray again several other salons insisted that my hair color could not be removed. Heidi not only managed to remove the color, she did an amazing job dyeing my hair gray so that I could begin letting my hair return to its natural color. It's now almost a year later and my color looks fantastic and my hair cut is perfect every time. After reading some of the negative reviews here, I wonder if people are reviewing the wrong salon. My review is mixed. I selected the salon based on their informative website to get my makeup done for an event in the area. I can't say enough wonderful things about Seraphina who immediately put me at ease and gave me a natural glowing look through her artistry of airbrush makeup techniques and some eyelash extensions. I do however, have to agree with many of the reviews that mention Heidi's unprofessional behavior. While she did a good job with my updo, I could have done without the insulting and condescending remarks during my appointment. read more

I got my wedding hair and makeup done with Grace at Vanity Hair Studio and I felt absolutely beautiful on my wedding day. I was originally worried the stylist wouldn't know how to handle Asian hair texture and skin tone, but Grace was very patient throughout the hair and makeup trial. I provide a few Pinterest photos and Grace was able to give me feedback on the best style for me based on my look and taking the humid weather into consideration. On the day of wedding, the makeup was even more flawless than the trial. Grace literally write down notes from the trial and pay attention to every detail, especially I am very picky on how I like my eyeliner. My eyes often photographed one bigger than the other (in an obvious way), but Grace was able to "fix" it. When Grace was working on the front section of my hair, something doesn't feel right at one point but I didn't know how to describe what I didn't like (due to wedding jitters). Grace was so patient to style my hair almost strand by strand to make sure I love the way I look. My maid of honor got her hair and makeup done by 2 different stylists, and her look was very soft and romantic and matched perfectly to the blush pink bridesmaid dress. read more

I used Vanity Hair Studio for my wedding hair and makeup in June 2022. The day came, with no prior communication since November 2021. The last communication I received was via email stating that the stylists would be at my hotel room at 10:30am. However, at 10:45am they had not arrived and so I tried calling the salon, only to get their voicemail. I attempted to text the number I got off the answering machine from the salon with again no response. My wedding party and photographer were messaging the stylists on social media for about 30 minutes before we finally got a response around 11:15am stating they were at another wedding and were on their way. They arrived around 11:30am and Heidi (the owner) was incredibly defensive and rude, stating that my paper contract said they would be there at 11am. And even though they were still 30 minutes late with zero communication I did not receive an apology. The hair/makeup process was rushed and not relaxing at all. The stylists were talking poorly about the previous party they had done that day, and were rude to my bridal party as well as my photographer. At the end, Heidi charged us almost $1400, which she included tip for each stylist including herself. We tried to reach out to Heidi after the wedding to discuss this whole situation with her, for which she was rude, yelled and hung up on us. So, between the terrible communication, defensiveness and rudeness I would NOT recommend this salon. I will never be going back and I hope you do your research and find a better salon for your special day! read more

I've been to Vanity before for waxing and a facial and I loved Seraphina. When I was helping a friend plan a destination wedding in Portsmouth I scheduled hair and makeup for the bride and her family at Vanity. We went in the week of the wedding for the bride to do her trial hair and makeup and everything was ok....or so I thought. Before we left, the bride paid for her trial AND for her full service on the wedding day. She tipped her stylist and confirmed that she could tip in cash on the wedding day. After we left, someone came out to have her fill out a credit card form. Since she's from out of town....and had already paid IN FULL for her services, so told them she wasn't comfortable writing down her credit card number for them to keep on file. They said ok and we left. The evening I got an email from Heidi explaining that they weren't comfortable with the bride since she wouldn't adhere to their credit card policy. They were cancelling all of the appts we made for the wedding and said they would refund the bride for her wedding services that she had prepaid. I was in shock reading the email. Not only did it not make any logical sense, they were cancelling 7 appointments for a wedding that was days away for a bride that lived 350 miles away. After back and forth emails with Heidi, she was willing to let the rest of the party come in, but not the bride....and that was only if I was willing to put my credit card info on file to secure the appointments (which I had offered to do when I booked them - and was told no!), but I had to promise her there would be no 'issues' the day of the wedding. She told me I had until the end of that day to get back to them to keep the appointments. I was in shock. And angry and completely beside myself. So I never responded. Then they had the NERVE to call the BRIDE's phone the morning of the wedding to see if we were still coming in. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I can assure you I will never step foot in that salaon again. read more

Came to Vanity on 9/23/17 for our bridal party hair and makeup and it was perfect! 12 women got their hair and makeup done and the studio was the perfect place to get ready for my wedding. We were in the salon by ourselves and it was so fun having champagne & brunch the morning of the wedding! Everybody was happy with their looks -- every stylist was professional, fun & willing to help every girl get the look they desired! We started at 9 and finished up around 1:30 which was about a half hour ahead of schedule. I would highly recommend this salon for any Portsmouth/Seacoast wedding! read more

My step-daughter booked this salon for hair and makeup for 5 bridesmaids, a junior bridesmaid and 3 mothers for her wedding day. The salon was dedicated during the time that we were there entirely toward meeting our needs. They could not have been more accommodating and interested in making sure that we were pleased with our results. None of the wedding party had used this salon before and we were all pleasantly surprised and our expectations were not only met but surpassed. I would highly recommend this salon for anyone having a wedding in the Portsmouth area. I recently employed her hair services for a very important life event and I was extremely disappointment with both the result and the overall experience. She is very difficult to work with and I wish I had gone with my instinct and canceled her in favor of another hair studio for my event. I had a friend re-do my hair after Heidi finally left. She brought a couple other team members with her, one of whom did hair for two of my friends and was completely incompetent. Both ended up looking like a child had done their hair and immediately re-did it once the Vanity crew left. Overall it was not a great experience and I would never recommend this salon for wedding/event services! There are plenty of other salons in Portsmouth. read more

I typically do not write reviews and don't bother with the smaller bits and pieces. But this time I was a bit peeved by the services. 1. I had gone in for a hair cut and a gray blend for color. I had booked the appointment online with Heidi but was served by Grace. I didn't bother much as this was my first visit and as such one was as good as the other. But for anybody who is a bit more fastidious, this could be a bother. 2. I was specific to Grace that I would want to be able to see the salt pepper look and that the color should reduce some salt and increase some pepper. 3. Although they had white and red wine, the didn't have the opener so had to settle for coffee. Coffee was served but should have been served when I was waiting for the color to settle and not when my hair was being cut! 4. The haircut was tad too short that I find it difficult to partition well. I can probably still live with that 5. The worst was the blend. The color was so dark and throughout that forget salt/pepper, it looks more like coal black! It almost looks unnatural and my wife nearly closed the door on a "stranger". Grace, the hair dresser applied some clarifying shampoo and washed it twice and then since then I have washed my hair with shampoo all three days since the hair cut. She said the salt exists and washing should bring it out but after four washes with shampoo in three days there isn't any salt popping out! This is just a waste of $80 and I will never be getting back here. I gave an extra star for the cleanliness but truly this should be just a one star review! read more

I had a decent experience I would probably go back my hair was 3 months overgrown I had a fantastic haircut before so she just cleaned it up I had a yelp deal and haircuts are $45 I added eyebrow and lip wax for 15 which was advertised on the sandwich board and got $5 back. So between that not being shown the back of my head and not being given a style I'm deducting one star but overall it was a good experience just a few little things that can be easily fixed read more

I got married on oct 6 and had Lindsay do mine, and my bridesmaids hair. It was the best experience!! I went for my trial about a month before with 2 ideas in mind. We tried both and they looked great! Then, Lindsay asked if I wanted to try one more idea that she had and I'm so glad we did! It was the do I went with. I was so happy that she took her time to make sure it was perfect and i was 100% happy. The day of the wedding was amazing!!! She came to our suite and did everyone's hair as well as the flower girl, my mom, and sister in law. It went so smoothly and we all looked so great!! For the first time everyone was so happy with their hair! 2 of my bridesmaids are switching to her for their regular hairdresser :-) I highly recommend her and couldn't say enough good things read more

I got my hair done there a couple months ago and I finally saved up enough to go get what they ruined fixed. I booked an appointment there thinking it was in Portsmouth and the prices were high so they MUST be a higher end salon right? WRONG!! I asked for a FULL foil with a shadow root. When it was done it was basically a particular foil (if that) and my "shadow root" was just my natural hair color which I specifically said I hated. The underneath of my hair was still dark and it looked like there was just a few foils thrown in here and there. My hairdresser put that huge round make up light on my hair to take pictures which made my hair look bright, blonde and shiny. After paying over 200 dollars I got home and noticed how much of my natural hair color/dark was showing. After 2 days I couldn't take it, everyone said it looked like there was NO DIFFERENCE. I called back and asked to come in to get it fixed. My hairdresser told me she would have to charge me for a "balayage"...aka another 200 probably. I was so mad!! Got it "fixed" and she basically just again threw in a few foils here and there. Long story short I FINALLY save up enough (struggling college student) to get this fixed from another salon and while I was there my hairdresser informed me that my hair cut was COMPLETELY UNEVEN and that it looked like she "accidentally" cut a huge chunk out of the back and then never cut the rest to make it even (makes sense as to why every time I put my hair up there was always this piece falling out, how annoying) and that there was barely any highlights in my hair. She said it wasn't even classified as a particular foil and even tho it was a few months ago there should still be evidence of foils. Luckily she was able to actually give me a full foil and it's been a couple weeks and still looks amazing. Please do not be tricked like I was and save your money and go to a better salon that listens to you and actually cares about their customers. The fact that they wanted to charge me to fix their own mistakes just baffles me. Luckily after getting upset they decided not to charge me but still I've never had a hairdresser assume they could charge me if I was unhappy. I always have everyone ask who does my color and I am happy to say it's Vanity. The team there is so friendly and they stand behind the work they do. Best salon in Portsmouth! Also they offer the best extensions- they are absolutely stunning! You'll never go back to the old glue ones again- they are the new super comfortable "tape" for my lack of better words style and they are incredibly natural, comfortable, and look amazing. Perhaps they have better hairstylists, but mine gave me a very expensive SuperCuts experience. There was no consultation about hair type, preference for the haircut, natural part or difficult cowlicks. The hairdresser seemed to just go "yup, short" and proceeded to create a box haircut that was not even (two different lengths on either side of the back of my head), went against my natural part, and included a one inch semi-bald spot over the left ear. While I figure that hair grows back and I can always get another haircut, I would not want anyone else to share this awkward experience. So, if you want to pay extra for a Wal-Mart haircut, this is the place to go. read more

I was in town for a wedding and asked hotel staff for a recommendation for a hair salon for an updo. Their recommendation, along with the high ratings and reviews on Yelp and Google led me to Vanity. The stylist I made the appointment with never showed up (I was told she was running late) and another stylist came over 15 minutes after my appointment time to say that she would take over and do my hair. This stylist did not listen to my requests, even though I showed her pictures of what I was looking for. My hair looked awful, and I did politely ask for her to try to correct it. I ended up leaving and having to pay someone else to fix it as best they could last minute before the wedding. I am not in one wedding photo as I was so self- conscious about my hair. Also, I attempted to reach the salon owner by phone to discuss this with her directly and she has not returned my call. I would not ever recommend this salon. read more
