My wife had an appointment booked for her and a friend for a special event for 3 months. This morning they texted to tell her today's appointment is cancelled. My wife immediately called, and the woman that handles scheduling was so apathetic, convey she didn't care. It was an appointment for two, one of their employees called out, they had no backup, and they gave away the other slot without actually taking to my wife. Can't recommend avoiding this place enough. Not a cheap place, so quality was expected. Unfortunately, it was a " never again" kind of experience, not even for free. Notified the aesthetician I had very sensitive skin, she disagreed:( - well, I lived with my skin for awhile and had to do much to calm down my skin after appointment. I came here several times in prep for my wedding day. I can say that I will never be going back. My stylist Rachael cut my hair into layers the day before the wedding so that it would have more volume...it had the opposite effect. She BUTCHERED MY HAIR. The top layer was at my chin, then a stringy bottom later below my boobs on one side, and the other side looked fine. The DAY BEFORE MY WEDDING DAY SHE DID THIS TO ME. The day of my wedding I had a major panic attack and wouldn't let her even touch my hair again and ended up just doing it myself. I absolutely HATE HATE my hair. It looks like absolute crap, and now I have to spend the next 6 months doing hot oil treatments to grow out these horrific choppy layers. They look like a cosmetology student did it just after learning. Also, 3 out of 4 of my bridesmaids HATED how their hair turned out. Frizzy, nasty, not what they asked for in the back, not following directions. DO NOT GO HERE FOR YOUR WEDDING. YOU WILL 1000% REGRET IT. If someone EVER, ever suggests a haircut the day before your wedding do not do it. You'll have to live with this crappy look for months. I have been going to this spa for years for a variety of services. I recently went for a classic pedicure and it was one of the worst I've gotten. The nail tech was lovely, we had great conversation, however the paint job was terrible! The callous removal was barely existent, massage was meh. I was gifted with a certificate for the "pamper me " package. When I arrived, I was immediately greeted by the front desk staff and offered a drink while I waited. Julianna gave me the best facial I have ever had and she recommended a product that I should bring home. I'm so glad I did as it has completely changed my skin for the better. very disappointed. I had a haircut there, which with tip was $90 it was more of trim which took all of 6 minutes. I felt I might want more off but the stylist said I could just come back if I did. I called a few days later saying I did indeed want more off additionally it was uneven. Scheduling that was a nightmare, I had an appointment but was told that was a computer error- "having computer issues" she said. I finally got in. Much to my surprise, though the stylist was late taking me in to the salon .. I was told she only had time to clip the uneven side. I would have to schedule again for another haircut to have more length off. No one ever reached out to me to resolve the issue, I went elsewhere and paid again and received a cute haircut. read more

I recently went to this salon and was quickly pushed into my service. The employees were hanging around mostly on their phones. I was originally scheduled with someone and changed to a women named Lauren who gave me the most professional service I've received there. She was so sweet and gave me the best pedicure. I have difficult feet. I will admit. The whole experience before I was sent to Lauren was very disappointing. She mentioned she does facials. I booked a bridal event for a dear friend, mani's and pedi's. It was my wedding gift to the bride. We needed to add one more girl(who was the maid of honor) both the bride and myself where told this would be impossible. The event was taking place at 12:30. I was told by Brandy Duty that she could fit me in at 10:30. The whole idea was that we would be together. In order to make this work, I removed myself to let the maid of honor take my place. I spent over $800 dollars for this. I was extremely disappointed as was the whole party. We had a three year old in the group, I am sure they could have fit one other in. So while every one else was getting their nails done, I sat in a chair and waited. I spent 2 hours pryer running around trying to find a place to do my nails. Brandy was rude to the bride as well as myself on the phone. Please look elsewhere if you looking for this type of event. Would never go there or recomend the Wingate to anyone. Ive had great services at the Wingate. Ive had manicures, pedicures, massages and facials. All have been very relaxing and everyone pays close attention to detail. They work hard to provide a spa experience at prices that are similar to other "spas" that are far less spa like. Their monthly specials are the way to go from my experience. I wish there was more around their location to make it more of an experience making a day of things. But Stratham is Stratham and thats what it is out there :) read more

Okay, so I moved to the area in March 2008 and was on the prowl for a new stylist. This one has been voted a "Best Of Seacoast NH" or something, so I gave it a shot. After spending way too much money for seven years in my Newbury Street salon, I thought..Why not continue the trend here in NH? Wingate's webpage says "formerly of Newbury Street" and its Senior Stylist Jo was apparently top notch. WRONG! I called for a trim and color consultation just to play it safe and test the place out before I committed to full on salon services...and thank GOD I did the test run! This woman was downright insulting, lacked personality and spent the entire time aggressively pushing Kerastase product on me. She told me my hair clearly looked like I flat iron it daily..it was severely damaged, that it would never grow beyond the length it currently was and that highlights were not a great idea because my new gray hairs could be my highlights..huh? Needless to say,I walked out with a helmet head befitting of a mid-western news anchor or a bad beauty pageant contestant. I should point out that my sister is a stylist in NY and has been for over 20 years, so I'm not entirely ignorant of what should be done to my hair. Plus, when she looked at the cut that Ms. "Senior Stylist "Jo spent a (painfully long) hour hacking into my hair, she found that the back was completely lopsided..by about a 1/2 inch. Turns out Jo worked at some random salon in Harvard Square when she lived in Boston..i'd never heard of it and I know that means nothing, but don't tout talent that doesn't exist. read more

I have had several different services and for the price you pay frankly they don't measure up. The massage I had was average at best. The facial is probably the one treatment I felt was really good. I think you pay for the atmosphere more then the treatment itself. Personally I would rather have less atmosphere and better treatments. I just called to inquire on a treatment and was told it was $15.00 more then the price on the web because it wasn't with another treatment. No where did I see this on their web site. Having just moved to the area, and being emotionally scarred from many horrific salon experiences, I took a risk and booked an appointment at the Wingate based solely on their website and fact that they have received a "Best of NH" award. I assumed if they've made the Best of NH list, then they must have raving fans. If they have raving fans, then they must be doing something special. Other than the building, which is a stately old home and gorgeous, I was not impressed. The decor inside is what I would call "granny chic" and was immediately off-putting for me. The only hair products I saw for sale seemed to all be the L'Oreal Professional line (snore). My stylist was about 10 minutes late for my appointment (always annoying) and looked like she just got out of bed after a hard night. Her hair was disheveled and pulled back into a ponytail. I started getting that nagging feeling that I had made a bad decision and would have to live with the outcome, whatever that may be. She took me into this enormous room and started working on the color. I had color all over my ears and forehead (huge pet peeve) and I was scrubbing it off for days. We seemed to be the only ones in the salon and while my color was processing, I sat there - alone - in the huge empty room for 30 minutes. Then I was sent off to another girl for a shampoo, into another huge and empty room. She was not very talkative, which is normally fine with me but being that everything was so quiet, it felt awkward. At that point, I just wanted to get out of there. Now for the moment of truth - the cut and styling. I have very curly hair which just turns to frizz after the combing and coloring if someone doesn't know how to treat curly hair. But my stylist was a "Senior Stylist" so I didn't think I needed to coach her. As my hair got bigger and bigger, I sensed her nervousness but instead of acknowledging the mess that was unfolding and trying to correct it, she hurriedly finished with the diffuser and sent me on my way. Needless to say, I walked out with a head full of fuzz. Even the girl who rang me up couldn't look me in the eye. Huge, giant and frizzy - so bad that I just went home and took a flat iron to it before I ran into anyone I knew. In the end, the cut and color came out okay but the experience was generally uncomfortable and the results were nothing special. The one good thing I can recommend is their cucumber mint iced tea, very good. Unfortunately, it's not enough to make me go back. read more

I have been a repeat customer to the Wingate for years. I received a gift certificate for Christmas this year along with a bonus $25. They advertise it as a great special, however its not that great. I did misread the expiration date that is on me. When I called I was told they couldn't honor it. This was very disappointing, if I had called well beyond the Feb 1st day, I could accept that. I will no longer be a repeat customer. I understand about running a business, but if you want to stay in business always use good judgement, what would have it really cost them to honor $25. read more

I go here regularly to get my eyebrows waxed and tinted by Amanda, she is amazing! My eyebrows come out perfect every single time and I wouldn't trust anyone but Amanda to do my eyebrows. The last time I came in for my appointment with her I decided to add a facial with her last minute and I am SO glad I did. It was the best facial I have ever had and my skin is glowing!! I have been to the Wingate for several srvces. The massage I've had was good, not spectacular but not awful either. I've gone to a night of beauty and enjoyed it immensely, with my hair and makeup done nicely. I went for Mani and a pedi and I probably won't go back. I have had a way better pedi elsewhere. Love this place. I went here for my bridal hair and make up among other things. First, if you are going for makeup, may I recommend Julie? She was very receptive to working with my ideas, asked alot of questions about my outfit, skin tone and skin type etc, etc. She was very helpful in tailoring a makeup style to my oily skin and provided me with a special oil absorbing loose powder to dab on for the day. Also she recommended special products for my skin to "tone" it in preparation to pull off a matte look for the wedding. My hair was very nicely done there, my advice is to be your own (polite) advocate, the stylists want you to be happy, tell them what you want! I asked for extra volume and the last minute addition of a tiara, no problem! I also went for a microdermabrasion and facial at this location. For both these services I also recommend booking with Julie. I'm a young gal, but trying to treat my somewhat acne prone skin over the years had left the skin dry, chapped in some places and ashey. After my treatments I was glowing and had much better color tone. Yes it's expensive and only temporary, but if it's for your wedding, do it! During the facial portion of the treatment a heavy steaming opened my pores allowing Julie to clean them. She was also able to examine my pores and skin under a magnifying glass and talk to me about the specific skin issues I had. She also recommended facial care techniques. Yes she mentions spa products, but they don't care if you buy them. Julie is more concerned that you know to apply oil correction serum before a moisturizer not after, etc. So much good advice. The miroderm was somewhat painful, but not painful enough to outweigh the huge improvement in the skin clarity I experienced after a few treatments. I also have been doing my underarm waxing with Amanda, wonderful! While she waxes you, she chats about hair growth, hair patterns and any other details about hair you always wanted to know but were too afraid to ask. Beautiful old but restored building. The BEST massage I have ever had was from Heidi - she is outstanding. The iced tea with cucumber in the waiting room is delicious. The staff is very friendly. On the weekends there tends to be a lot of bridal showers and noisy groups in the waiting area. It is quiet once you get into a massage or facial room though. Facials are also wonderful. The hair salon does great work - but they tend to push their products a little too much. The wonderful head massage they give when they shampoo you helps you to ignore that. read more

I booked the Wingate for a bachelorette party and LOVED it. Jenn our party planner was very helpful and organized. They somehow managed to have 11 girls finish all of their services at the same time. I had a massage from Karyl? (I may be wrong on her name) but the massage was great. The prices are a little high but well worth the price when organizing a large group of girls. WORST SPA EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. My problems started when I tried to book the appointment. I scheduled the "Couples Spa Package" for myself and my best friend to celebrate her recent engagement. The next day the spa called and left me a voicemail stating that the Private Room they use for couples pedicures was already booked so we would be in the public pedicure room. This package costs more than 450 dollars so that was unacceptable to me. I called to ask them to fix this. They told me that there was a "note in the computer saying that I was told this already and that I had said it would be fine" Um no. I NEVER was told this until I got a voicemail about it which was the reason I was calling... Because I AM NOT ok with it. They said they would fix it and call me back. They never called back. Two days later I called again to check on the status and the woman I spoke with assured me it was all worked out and we were in the private room. So we go, first up is our couples massage. The massage therapist asked if there were any areas I wanted her to focus on or avoid. I asked her to focus on my back and shoulders and to please NOT massage my scalp or face. I said I don't like the oil in my hair or on my face. Well she totally ignored that. Not a huge deal but we had plans to go out after and my hair was a greasy disgusting mess. I also specified that I wanted deep pressure and it felt like my 9 year old, 55lb niece was giving me the massage. After our terrible massage we put on our bathrobes and went to have lunch in the little room at the bottom of the stairs. Which consisted of potato chips, pasta salad and a sandwich. After we ate we sat on one of the two couches ..... In bathrobes..... NAKED UNDERNEATH.... When suddenly a MAN WALKS IN with his wife... To have lunch... 5 feet away from us. He was MORTIFIED and so were we. It was SO UNCOMFORTABLE. We sat there for a solid 25 minutes wanting to DIE. So finally a girl comes down to take us to get our facials, which I must say was the only part of the whole experience I enjoyed. The girls who did them were really nice and I was actually able to relax.... (The 1 star of my review is for the facial) After the facial, another girl came to get us for our pedicures. We walk into the regular old pedicure room....NOT THE PRIVATE ROOM THAT WE PAID FOR. I was so mad but at this point I didn't even care because I knew I would never be coming back. We had our crappy pedicure... Literally the worst pedicure I've ever had in my life. No scrubbing...it was legit just her rubbing some lotion on my feet and painting my toenails. She didn't even cut my cuticles. Terrible. We went downstairs to use the restroom and pay and when we were in the lobby I asked one of the girls in the salon if there was a can of dry shampoo I could use to freshen my hair since the massage therapist had put her oily hands all in it after I asked her not to. She said "we have some you can buy... But none you can use." REALLY? Terrible TERRIBLE experience. NEVER EVER GOING BACK. EVER. read more

I recently have started going to the Wingate again for Haircuts and Massage due to it's proximity to where I live. I have a great stylist who is sweet and welcoming. She listens to my needs and has come through with a hairstyle that is just what I'm looking for. I also needing some massage service after a recent move and found Sara to be wonderful. She has very strong hands that work the knots right out! She listens to your needs, makes you feel comfortable and cared for. The atmosphere at the Wingate is just beautiful and you feel the stress leave your body as soon as you walk in for a service! The front desk staff is very accommodating and efficient. I highly recommend the Wingate for many different types of services. I've had many over the years. read more

Just spent the afternoon at the Wingate Salon & Spa having a catered wrap lunch and getting manis/pedis with 4 of my girlfriends. We were celebrating the graduation (MBA, yeah!) of a friend, and treated her to the spa. We had our own beautiful "living room" to enjoy our lunch and socialize which made us feel special. The food was great, the treatments were good and the staff was very accommodating, helpful and professional. It was so nice to all be in the same room when getting our manis and pedis. The pedi chairs are super comfortable, and the warm neck compress was so relaxing! Planning the event was simple and it was convenient to have lunch and treatments at the same location. All of us really enjoyed the experience and can only recommend it. read more

This place is awful. Overrated and overpriced. Went for a girls day with my sister and daughters because we had gift certificates. We all got manicures and I got a shellac. The technicians were snobby and anti social and did an awful job. One of my daughters chipped same day (she was careful) and my shellac was terrible! Took layers of nail off removing previous shellac (from a different salon) and had to trim my nails all the way down! They were long. Overall shellac looked awful and she didn't even put a top coat on all my nails. When my sister called about it, because she has been there several times, they tried to blame me! Ultimately my daughter and I got a free manicure which she did but no way was I getting another shellac. So I got a pedicure and got a chunk of skin taken off along with my nail. I first went to the Wingate for a massage and had a nice experience. I then tried to schedule an appointment for a hair cut. No color and no styling. I, as a woman, wear a man's hair style and I asked for a man's hair cut. The receptionist argued with me for a few minutes and them transfered me to her manager ( it went straight to her voicemail). I was in a rush to get to a funeral so I went to a salon down the road and had no trouble at all. Thanks for refusing to provide a simple service. read more

First time customer for color and cut. Was disappointed overall. The color was just ok but the hair stylist cut my hair the way she wanted it NOT the way I had requested. I specifically said I did not want my hair cut shorter in the back and longer in the front...and guess what... she cut it short in the middle of the back and cut it on an angle so it is longer in the front. When I said I didn't like how she had cut it, she said it wasn't really longer in the front. She made an attempt to fix it but only cut more from the back and said she didn't want to cut it shorter in the front. In addition to not getting my hair cut the way I wanted, the services are VERY PRICEY. For over $200 for color and a cut the stylist should have listened instead of cutting my hair the way she wanted to. read more

Was introduced to this spot when a family member that lives in that area hosted a bridal bachelorette party for our aunts, cousins, etc. We went for the day and it was a dream...massage, manicures, pedicures, facials...Oh My! And do not forget those yummy scones in the tea room! Now we try to host a family event there every year - last time we used the room in the back. I think it is mostly a bridal room, it was a treat. Other than that I just constantly ask for gift cards so I can go every few months for my two fav services - the Signature Facial which is a massage and facial combo or the Hot Stone Massage a destressing treat. I have found it to be a wonderful refuge - just some me time - and I have never been dissappointed with the services. I always get the 'pedicure of the month' which includes a nice little bakery treat while you're drying. I see the same technicians and we've developed a nice rapport. Everyone is friendly and hospitable and this is always an appointment that I look forward to.
