I have to be very clear. This place looks spiffy and welcoming at a glance, but I left this office extremely dissatisfied after several visits for xrays, cavity fillings, and periodontal work. Though the office is filled with seemingly friendly women in pink buzzing about, don't be fooled. You will be passed off to all of them, never feeling like any one in there is your personal trusted dentist. Countless things turned me off from ever returning to this office. Most importantly, they recommended for me to receive a whopping 9 cavity fillings after my initial check up in winter 2015, totalling well over 1200 dollars. The dentist did NOT assure that the novocaine had kicked in during one visit and she was knee deep in drilling when I started to feel a lot of pain, Which is very hard to express when you have sharp tools in your mouth. Further, I was told after thoroughly checking with my insurance and making sure Dr. McConathy's office checked too, that I would be 100% covered for these fillings, so I was shocked when a bill came to me in the mail months later, with subsequent debt collectors harassing me on the phone for not paying a bill that I didn't even know about at first. During another visit, one of the assistants asked me if was ever going to get my wisdom teeth removed and said flippantly that I should. (even though I have nothing wrong with my wisdom teeth and she had no business recommending procedures to me). As icing on the cake, when I later went back to my old, trusted dentist back home, he looked at my mouth and said that there was no reason to have had most of those fillings done. Curses! ** FACTS**** Dealing with Dr. McConathy, Cochecho Family Dentistry and her office receptionist was the most UNETHICAL experience I have ever been through. A pre-authorized quote, $250, for my daughter and I for 2 fillings right before Christmas. It was clearly and frequently communicated that I could NOT afford any other treatment during this appt and made appts for January to finish other work when insurance benefits renewed. I am a single mom of 2 daughters, a biz owner and resident of Dover, was going thru a divorce and a very difficult time. This was also shared with Chelsea. During the appt I was told many things during the procedure, but was never asked or told about any extra costs I would incur or I would have said STOP immediately. Got to the counter with Chelsea and the bill was $850!!!! Triple the quote!!! I was furious and shocked. She said you can put it on a credit card or make payments. I said "NO WAY!! Here is $350". $100 over what I could afford, right before Christmas. I told her she just lost 3 customers and I would not pay them another dime. Well, they took me to small claims court trying to get $1300 from me. Now math says $850 - $350 = $500. Real ethical, right? She showed a spreadsheet in court, not an actual invoice, with duplicate amounts and false charges like an X-ray that I know for certain didn't happen. The Dover judge allowed an emotional basket case, Chelsea, to rant on about ridiculous traumatic events in their office that had nothing to do with me. The Dover circuit judge found in favor of the Dentist. HOW!!?! I could not believe it when I received the judgement. I've since heard of this business doing this to countless people I know. Hmmm, maybe the Dover court needs the business, and if they find in favor of the defendant, the lawsuits from this Dentist may stop.... It HAS to stop, she should not be doing business in Dover. As a small biz owner in Dover, grew up here, and very involved in helping our great community, I can't imagine doing this to my clients, or I would be run out of town. They showed me around the office, and knowing that I had a small break, were very efficient and making sure everything was done and answered for me while getting me out quickly. I've been a patient of this practice for several years and have had nothing but great experiences. All of the work I've had done has been clearly explained to me, and it's clear that the dentists and hygienists here are well-trained and knowledgeable. I've never had any issues with the office billing my insurance and the few times I've had questions about bills, I have always found a clear answer. I really think they go above and beyond to take care of their patients. As someone who (like most people), absolutely dreads going to the dentist, my visits here are as relaxing and pleasurable as they possibly could be. Had a crown done today by Dr. Vajda. It couldn't have been easier. They made the crown right there so need for a temporary or a return visit. She explained everything and was very personable. They even have a tv with Netflix do you can watch something while waiting. read more

They overcharged me several times. Then came at me saying they were sending me to collections that day if I didnt come in and pay for what "insurance didnt cover" (3 months after the last service) AND said we were denied for a procedure because they had charged us for it previously - but because it had been 3 months and the insurance changed there was nothing I could do. Hundreds of dollars - now. The receptionist even laughed about it. We were told that procedure was absolutely 100% medically necessary, and two offices since then said it was basically malpractice. They're just trying to get as much money out of you as possible. There are much better practices that charge way less. It still hurts to floss between two molars from a filling they botched. I started seeing Dr. McConathy after having several bad experiences at other dentist offices. Because of these past traumatic experiences, I developed high anxiety leading up to and during appointments. Dr. McConathy used several techniques over the past couple years to alleviate my anxiety to the point where I trust her completely and my anxiety has significantly reduced - I still hate needles, but there's not much they can do about that ;-) Further the entire staff is incredibly friendly and compassionate. If you have insurance, make sure you don't trust them on what's covered and what you will have to pay out of pocket. I had an insurance change in January. I went in for my cleaning and talked to them about scheduling my fillings. I ask just like every time, what am I looking at for my out of pocket expense, and what is the insurances estimated coverage. They told me what I had to pay and what insurance would pay, so I agreed and set up the appointment. In May when I got my fillings, everything went great. I paid the portion they told me I was responsible for and they sent the remaining portion off to insurance. My next cleaning was in August where I came in and was notified I had an outstanding balance for my last fillings that were done. I asked how could that be as I have insurance, and they had no idea. They told me Monday they would have the insurance manager look into it. So, after I left from my cleaning, I called my insurance company myself and found out there was a 6 month waiting period for fillings and they told me the dentist should have known that when they were looking at my coverage to see what would be covered under my insurance. So I waited to hear back from the dentist office which I never did so I had to call myself. They told me that they tried reaching out to me before my appointment to tell me that there was a waiting period and it wouldn't be covered until after. I never received a call, text, or email notifying me about this. When I came in for my fillings that day, they didn't mention to me that I would have to pay full price because I had a waiting period. Instead they still try to bill my insurance and tell me that this portion will be covered by then and this is the portion I owe out of my pocket now! This is still on going but they are saying that they can either give me 10% off as a courtesy OR a payment plan.. they cannot do any more as they can't guarantee if insurance will cover a procedure or not. Yet I spoke to my insurance company, and they told me had my dentist notified me and booked my fillings to be done after the waiting period, they would have been covered. With that being said, I have an invoice saying the portion I owed and paid for my fillings that day, and the portion they billed my insurance supposedly knowing that it would be denied. I will not do business with them until there is a better resolution than a 10% discount off my over $300 dollar bill the insurance denied due to this company! read more

I received a letter dated 1/20/16, today, 1/23/16, from my new dental office, Cochecho Family Dentistry, informing me they will no longer provide my dental care. This is because of a policy they have which I find unethical and have reported to the Federal Trade Commission. They sell you on a tooth whitening system for $99 which you pay up front, but can't use for six months. They take a mold of your mouth, and send it out for the trays to be made. They will then NOT GIVE YOU the tooth whitening gel, until your next cleaning with that same hygienist, six months later. And you will only be given the gel at each future cleaning with that same hygienist. If you miss a cleaning by more than two weeks, you won't get the gel. I think it is ridiculous that you have to pay for something you will not get for 6 months. I was told at my first cleaning that it was because it was 'such a great deal', that they were losing money from people coming in for one visit, getting the system, and never returning. So they couldn't make up the difference in future work on them. Well, I asked for the gel anyway at my second appointment for fillings being done 1/19/16. They repeatedly stated it was their policy to not give it until the cleaning following six months later, and denied what I had been told by the hygienist at my first visit, 12/17/16. I told them I wasn't sure if they were being unethical or immoral, but they were basically bribing customers to get their dental work through them, which their services should be doing themselves. Because they refused, I asked for my money back, which they gave me. And of course the following day, terminated doing further business with me. I found this 'highly rated' cosmetic dental office through Angie's List. I am less than impressed with not only this office, but Angie's List validity as well. And to echo another reviewer on here, over two visits, they replaced six fillings in three teeth, after I had just had all of the metal ones replaced with composite over the past 15 years through another dentist. I am not convinced I even needed them. And their process of doing the fillings is extremely painful. They place some metal brace around the tooth, which they jam deep into your gums. My gums are still torn up four days later, and a chip actually came out of one of the three latest fillings in that one tooth. Unless you want to be in a nice office with a friendly tour and slick high pressure selling gimmick, find another dentist that cares about your dental health and not just getting your business and trying to bribe you into continuing to go there.. read more

Really disappointed. Dr. McConathy recommended Botox 30 seconds after meeting me for 1st time - didn't know anything about my personal or financial situation (it's cosmetic, not covered by insurance, and quite expensive). Also said I needed 7 fillings (more than I've had in the last 5 years of regular dentist appts!) and the cost was ~$300. I decided to have a 2nd opinion re-exam at another office, was told I needed fewer fillings, and the cost was considerably less ~$150. "At every visit" - you never did that when I was a patient and you never made my husband do it previously - or he would have walked out sooner. His blood pressure was taken lying back with legs crossed. Your hygienist told him his blood pressure was too high to have a cleaning! LOL That is insane. Take accountability. Dr. McConathy is fantastic and very knowledgeable. My family and I have been clients for many years. Last couple of times I called to schedule an appointment I got an answer that they are not available for at least three month from now and not in a pleasant way. Friday my tooth broke before lunch. I called the office. Same thing. We are scheduling for April she said to me. I said, my tooth broke, I can't just wait until April. She said, well sorry. Never experienced this behavior there before until few months ago, when I called just for a check up. So, I called another dentist in the area. Very nice and pleasant phone manners, caring. Asked me if I was in pain. I had a root-canal, so no, just very uncomfortable. Can you be here Tuesday at 1pm, she asked. I said: Absolutely! Dr.McConathy worked very hard to achieve her success by her knowledge of dentistry and beyond. It pains me to see that her most important person in her office that is dealing with her patients/ clients on the phone will ruin all the hard work Dr. McConathy put in. I know its been tough in last couple of years and as a self employed person myself, good workers are hard to find, but I didn't call about cleaning or whitening teeth. They put effort into making you feel comfortable while maintaining openness and transparency about your visit, what's being discussed and done for your teeth, and what your benefits and coverage will be for those services. On time check-in, friendly front staff, Hygienist Maggie did a gentle teeth cleaning and x-rays, Dr. Emilia did a full dental exam, pointed out some deficiencies that will need attention later and that was that. My old dentist has moved and I picked the practice solely on their display ad. Glad I did. read more

So if you want to get unnecessary dental work this is the practice for you. I strongly suggest that if you need cosmetic dentistry, go to a dentist that has a lab onsite, changes are difficult or not done at all. I was also told that I needed 7 cavities filled . Jennifer charged over $1,000 for a crown that was completely unnecessary. She also found 3 cavities that I found so perplexing, I got another opinion. They told me at the 2nd opinion that they found no evidence of cavities and that "it's a very subjective art" as to whether one dentist feels there may be decay, and another one doesn't. X-rays were taken. I highly suggest you find someone else unless you want to pay for unnecessary procedures. read more

My husband and I used to be patients there, but after being consistently ripped off and lied to about the cost of services, we will no longer be going there. At my last visit, I expressed my concern with getting bills for $100+ and that I wasn't going to be able to have any work done if that was going to happen again. My dental insurance was very simple: they pay 50%. I got my estimate, was assured that it was going to be very close to that but knew that it's not exact and to count on a $50+/-, and had my work done. Sure enough, a month later I got a bill for over $100. I addressed the issue with the office and they tried blaming it on my insurance. I got the EOB from my dental insurance and they paid exactly what they should've. What I found out was that they use "special" services that isn't covered by dental insurance. I was never informed of this and refused to pay for "special" services that I didn't agree to. A year later, my husband got a court order for a lawsuit from her office. We tried disputing but of course we couldn't afford a lawyer to fight her lawyers. $161 later, this monster got her money for services were never agreed to. If you have the money to waste on over priced dental care and don't mind being lied to about it, then she's the dentist for you. But if you're poor like me and don't like being taken advantage of, RUN!!! read more
