Courtney, the stylist I saw at this salon, fried my highlights pretty bad, and left me with an overprocessed orange head of hair that she did everything to mask with styling, so that I didn't see all the damage until I restyled my hair at home, which I had to do right away, because she also didn't wash my hair good enough, and left a lot of my brown root color on the back of my neck, I discovered later at home. I called and left a message about my service, and the damage, and Abby, the manager/owner returned my call, and proceeded to say I should be grateful that she didn't charge me as much as a service like this typically costs, to which I said there is a reason for that, and from there Abby proceeded to make countless excuses for Courtney's poor choices and discussed Courtney's mental health issues and anxiety with me, as if that was good reason. Other things that I should have called out at the time but I wanted to enjoy my service and really thought I was in good hands - I had just recently had a Malibu C treatment to remove some of the darker pigments in my hair and the back of my head processed lighter from that treatment, and the back on my head is where Courtney choose to start highlighting my hair first, meaning that it processed faster and she left it on while the front of my head caught up. I also caught her spraying hairspray before curling my hair - I asked what she just sprayed, she said that it would help hold the curl, but you don't do that, especially on compromised hair???? I trusted this person and I told her I have had back experiences before and that it was a big deal for me to trust someone with highlighting my curly hair, and this is what I get for my kindness and faith that I put into her. I was offered to have one of their other stylists (someone the manager referred to as a "good" stylist) fix my orange color, but I was not comfortable going back there and didn't trust I was in good hands. I asked for enough of my money back to go a salon of my choosing and have someone tone my hair, but they refused to accommodate my feelings and treated me as though I was the one that did something wrong. read more

How do you review a salon - based on the stylist, the physical environment, or a combo of both? My love of my stylist, Anna R., for both her professionalism and kind heart would knock this review up to 5++++ stars!!! My 4 star rating is based on the vibe of the salon. Vanity Hair Studio is located in a "transitional" area of Bellingham - the Fountain District. Not a lot of other stores/restaurants within walking distance to make this location a true girls day out. Parking is available behind the salon, but will become harder to find as the building fills up with both tenants and other retail. The salon itself is a blank canvas (other than for the large piece of graffiti on the wall.) Black ceilings, black stations, tons of windows but oddly, not tons of light. It is billed as a "concept" salon, the sister salon to Vanity Hair Studio in Shoreline. The interior is not distinctly Bellingham nor is it similar to the other top Bellingham salons, who each have their own niche (girly blond waves; ombre, tatted moms; versions of grey, etc.) What the blank canvas provides is a format for highly trained stylists, who love where they work, love their profession and it is reflected in their client's hair. I've had more people comment that this is the best color and cut I've had and I've been going to Anna for over 4 years. Items behind the scenes (electric hair vacuum), reputable products (Bumble and bumble) and strong management allow the stylists time to create, experiment and share their gifts with their clients resulting in incredible hair. The receptionists rock at their jobs - a wonderful first experience to have whether in person or on the phone. Vanity provides services for men and children too. read more

First time customer and I will definitely be going back - Kayla cut and colored my hair. She knows what she's doing. I sometimes dread the first wash at home after a style because it may not fall the same way when I dry it and it won't ever look as good.
