I stumbled upon this hair studio as I was walking downtown in late 2013. I had recently moved from Hawaii where I couldn't find a decent stylist who knew how to deal with my haole hair (fine and blond), so I was in desperate need of a good cut and color. I was fortunate to be seen by the owner Dre on a walk-in basis. She was very friendly, spent time getting to know me and what I wanted done with my hair, and then delivered great results. I liked it so much, I even took a picture afterwards and used it as my Yelp profile picture for several months (but I have since changed my profile picture). There is metered street parking out front. The studio has beautiful wood floors and big picture windows letting in lots of natural light. Dre has also partnered with other local artists to display their creations in her space. A variety of paintings and photographs for sale adorn the walls, and there are jewelry turn styles with interesting accessories that you can also check out while your hair is being cared for. They accept all credit cards, including AMEX, which is not often the case with small businesses. Businesses only get reviews from me after I have visited a place at least twice and have received consistent service. I eventually made it back to The Hair Studio in March 2014. I was delighted and surprised that Dre, the owner actually remembered me from fall 2013 since it had been so many months since I had visited. I don't remember the name of who cut my hair but it was clear that she wasn't very passionate or interested in her job. The business didn't even have a receptionist so she had to leave during my cut several times. The biggest thing I noticed was that absolutely none of the tools were being sanitized. I gave her several very clear photos of my hair, and how I wanted it, and honestly it's nothing like the photos. At first I thought it was great but now that I am home it's about half the length I wanted it to be. Not only that, but I watched her do everything my hair stylist in Seattle said was a beginner mistake and that would make the haircut grow out horribly. My guess is maybe she is newer to the job and that is okay. A lot of these issues seem to lie with the management. Workers seemed over stressed, responsible for too many things. Perhaps aren't provided with proper sanitizing tools. Don't have the time to keep their spaces clean etc. I would definitely have been willing to pay $30 for the haircut if it had many of these issues had been addressed. Even just hiring receptionist to always be there would make a world of a difference. Higher cleaning standards. When you stretch your employees too thin, they lose their passion. My two stars are largely due to the lack of sanitization. It was not a clean place. You guys are gonna give someone a head infection and catch a lawsuit one of these days. Again, I really think this would be the fault of management. I think the woman who did my hair did her absolute best given the circumstances. read more

I asked for a straight cut about two inches below my jaw line. Instead I got a totally botched cut at my chin line. It's uneven, I have strands of hair that are like an inch longer just hanging out, and like look like Prince ducking Valiant. I believe the blonde woman Dre who cut my hair is the owner too. I showed a picture where the cut was clearly below the jaw not at it. And she didn't even look at the pictures I had. I said multiple times I need to put my hair back in a pony, the last time I said that, she asked "why" as if were any of her business. I can't put my curly now unevenly botched of a hair cut back in a pony in order to hide this hot mess, to workout, or because I just fucking feel like it. How shitty. I am so disappointed. read more

I took my son in for a haircut and this was definitely the worst haircut he's ever had. I'm not sure what happened exactly but he ended up with white walls above his ears and a "helmet" for a haircut. Even my husband asked me "what the hell happened to his hair?" when we got home. I have been coming here for a year now and I love working with Sam. I have very thin, falling, weak hair and was really afraid to die, much less bleach it. I was afraid to let anyone touch my hair because of how fragile it was and because of past terrible experiences. But Sam has been awesome at taking care of my hair, taking it to blonde and now to purple!! The hair dressers this time around were far more welcoming than my first experience when they fought with each other and passively argued about the way one of them was bleaching someone's hair. She gave me exactly what i wanted and was so attentive and kind, ALSO while her new born was there and her baby is sweet and quiet. I called when they opened on a Monday and was able to get a same day appointment with Dre for a haircut and eyebrow wax. She was very thorough with my eyebrows, which I appreciated since I have paid much more for waxing at other salons and have still had to trim the length and pluck strays when I get home. The haircut turned out great! I have the bottom half of my head shaved and I asked for a short bob (just below my ears). Dre did exactly what I asked and quickly, too! Being new to town, I decided to go here based on Yelp reviews and I was not disappointed! They take walk ins but I called ahead of time to make an appointment and they got me in early the next day. I was running a little late and had an awful time finding parking but they were totally understanding which I appreciate. The place feels really cozy and cute, which was a nice change from most salons I've been to. My goal was to go from my previous blonde balayage back to my natural brown, and Sophia absolutely nailed it. We discussed color options for a minute and then got right to it. I had a wonderful time chatting with her and all of the ladies were very nice and accommodating for if you wanted to get up and stretch or anything like that.
