I wanted a perm, but my hair is down to the middle of my back, so my regular place didn't want to tackle it. After a bit of research, I came across this salon. I am quite pleased! I felt welcomed the moment I walked in. I arrived kind of early so my stylist wasn't there yet, so I took in my surroundings and watched another stylist work her magic. My stylist, Cassie, walked in about five minutes after me and greeted me with a big smile. I showed Cassie a couple of pictures of what I wanted, and she knew exactly what I wanted. She got to work, all the while making sure I was comfortable. We had a pleasant conversation... and soon, it was unveiling time. I was quite surprised by the outcome -- it was *exactly* what I'd asked for! I've been admiring the results all morning. She carefully explained how to care for my new perm and made sure to caution me not to wash it for at least two days (I usually wait 3 just in case). The experience was wonderful and I am really happy with the results. Perms always look much better on me after the first wash... I'm so looking forward to seeing the final result because I know it's just what I'd requested. I am now going to ditch my previous salon and switch over to Looking Glass for everything because I know they understand what I want and they aren't shy about spending the time to achieve the look I want. I'm really disappointed, I wanted to love this place. I'm new to Bellingham and am looking for a regular salon. The stylist and staff were so welcoming and kind when I finally went in. Initially my appointment was cancelled via text because the person I was meant to see was sick. This totally happens and I understood! They told me they would offer a discount because of the last minute change. Initially the cut looked good, but it's always hard to know until I get my hands in it to style at home. The stylist didn't offer the discount at check out and I felt awkward asking. I feel like I left a good tip. I gave the cut a few days to wash and style myself. I felt like my style needed some tweaks to achieve what I showed them in reference photos. I did go back for a second fix cut. Again the stylist was so kind and personable. They took some weight off the cut and I left feeling better. Again after styling myself the cut was not what I was hoping for. Unfortunately it is super uneven and and I feel like the thinning sheers they used are not great for my fine hair. I've never asked for a haircut fix before and I felt like I couldn't ask for a second one. Perhaps it was just an off day. But I won't be returning. read more

I had one of the worst hair cuts of my life here by Cierra. she was nice enough but left my hair super choppy, uneven and nothing what I had asked for. I would have asked her to fix it but it was just so far off base I didn't want her cutting it any shorter and messing it up again. Maybe she's a good stylist otherwise but not the best cutter. I picked this salon out of a list of 10, and picked any stylist. It had been almost a year since I'd had a cut. I have to state outright that I am not a fan of getting my hair cut. Not sure why that is, but there it is. So, I was apprehensive at first, but Jette made me feel right at home. She listened to me carefully, then gave me an excellent cut. I asked for my hair to just be trimmed a little preserving most of the length because I'm getting married in May and I want to keep my hair as long as possible, she literally gave me a mullet. I said long layers would be ok but instead I have a shag haircut that will not go into a ponytail. I'm devastated. I came here kind of on a whim. The reviews looked good, and I walk by there all the time. Angela gave me a beautiful, layered perm that lasted me a long time. Of course I went back the next time I needed one! She was really good at picking up on what I was looking for (a hairstyle that was easy, low maintenance etc) and she really knows her stuff. She was also pretty quick about it. The decor is fresh after a recent remodel, and she is friendly. She chatted amiably with me, and at times she just worked in comfortable silence. This is the first time I have ever written a review on a business. If I could give this place 0 stars I would! I called and asked if anyone at this salon knows how to work with ethnic hair for my 10 year old daughter. The lady that answered said she recommends two people, Chris and Jennifer. So we found a day and time that worked and set an appointment with Chris. She asked a couple questions about my daughters hair so she could take notes to give to the stylist. We show up to our appointment 15-20mins early. Chris wasn't ready for us yet, totally fine! She calls us back to start washing my daughters hair(mind you I have already brushed all the knots out and straightened it prior to this appointment to make it much easier on the stylist) Once she was done washing it, we head to the chair. She pulls out a comb and starts trying to rip through her hair starting at the root. Right then and there I knew she didn't know what she was doing and we should have left! She said she doesn't have the right product for her hair and she now has to run and get it. So we wait for 30mins. She returns with a deep conditioner and heat styling product. She deep conditions her hair and puts her under Heat for 15mins. She then heads over to another stylist and starts asking her questions about my daughters hair. Comes back and tells me she wanted to see if the other stylist had any advice that she didn't already know. Once done, she washes again and takes her back to the chair. She brushes through her hair(not in sections) and starts blow drying the underneath of her hair and trimming it(the hair is not even straight yet) she proceeds to do this throughout the hair. We are now 3 hours into this by the way! The phone rings and the stylist that answers tell the gentleman on the phone that Chris is still doing hair. She asked Chris how much longer. She replies with 30mins. Um my daughters hair isn't even dry yet! 5 mins after that phone call she says that this is to much for her to do! So now it's 7 at night, my daughters hair is wet, curly and in a bun! Chris was suppose to deep condition, blow dry, straighten and cut. We walk to the front and Chris says "I won't charge you for the services but it'll be $25.00 for the product". The product? What? She replies, "yeah, I spent $25.00 on the product for her hair, I can show you the receipt ". So I pull my card out and tell her I don't want to argue with her and I think it's crazy that my daughters hair looks worse than what it did when we walked in. She then yells, "just take the product and leave". So we walked out! I went home that evening and spent only an hour and a half blow drying and straightening her hair. I am not a stylist and I do not have my daughters type of hair! Here is a picture of the cut she gave my daughter after I straightened it at home! She didn't apologize or offer other ideas/options. I love this place! They have so many cute Alice in Wonderland touches all over. A couple of things that I love about them. They let you book online, which is so much easier than playing phone tag. I came in with a bad haircut from elsewhere. I have curly hair that tends to look like a helmet without layers. But the woman who had cut my hair prior to Looking Glass Salon refused to give me layers so I decided to shop elsewhere and I'm glad I did. When I came in here, the stylist I had booked online looked at me and said, "You need layers," and I knew I had found my new haircut home. She just seemed incredibly knowledgeable about hair and took the time to ask me questions about the haircut I wanted. read more

I haven't lived in Bellingham for almost a decade and was very happy to see that Looking Glass was still in business when I was visiting last weekend. And since I needed a haircut, I decided to stick my head in and see if Claudia was around (she still owns it). She wasn't there but Chris was, and she just happened to have an opening for me :) I explained what I did and did not want (no razor) and half an hour later I had a better haircut than I've ever gotten in the almost ten years I've lived in San Francisco. And for half the money! The salon has been tastefully remodeled since the chartreuse walls days at the beginning (which I liked BTW), they have good magazines to read, and the stylists are SUPER talented and nice. How I wish Looking Glass was in San Francisco...but now I have another excuse to fly to Seattle and drive the hour and a half to Bellingham! Hurray! read more

I have had many a fiasco with hair salons while growing up, and when I found a hair stylist that knew exactly what I wanted and delivered I stuck with her. But alas, I moved up to Bellingham for university, and rarely had a chance to get my hair done at home. I was really hesitant to let anyone else do anything to my hair - that is until I met Jes T. She is a mastermind with hair. I love the colors that she uses and how she gives you a little bit of an edge. The conversation is easygoing and sassy and absolutely wonderful. I fell back in love with my hair after she dyed it, and it felt healthy again. I can't wait to go back and put new color in! All the staff were great. Super supportive of each other and wonderful. As a curly-haired girl I have had my fair share of disappointing salon experiences, often leaving with a head that looks like a rats nest caused by overzealous combing and product application by the stylist. I understand curly hair isn't the simplest to deal with and don't hold a grudge against those who have tried and failed; however I do move on to the next place. That being said, I may have found a home at the Looking Glass Salon! My stylist was Jes T. and I immediately felt comfortable with her kind, easy-going and realistic attitude. She herself is naturally curly and she didn't give me a hard time about usually cutting my own hair. She even asked if I wanted a wet or dry cut! Hooray! A stylist who understands! She did use a comb while cutting, but I'm sure if I asked her not to, she would have obliged; I also trusted her judgement in choosing to do so, and the cut came out great! She gets even more bonus points for asking if I would be interested in styling products and which ones, instead of just adding them in. I really felt like Jes T. respected what I wanted and what I was comfortable with, as well as understanding more about how to shape and cut curls than anyone I've been to before. This place is great! I have been tryibg to find a place to get my hair done since Christmas, and now, I've found a place! I called and got in within 20 minutes. Quicker than i imagined i would. My stylist was Lindy, and she was really helpful when i asked questions about coloring my hair at a later time. I also mentioned a want to see my hair wavy (it's pretty straight) and she showed me how to work a curling rod! You have to go to Lindy. I never color my hair but, after moving my part around for longer than I care to acknowledge to cover the silver hairs, I knew it was time. The problem was that I wanted to look natural and had no idea what I was going. Like most people, I showed up with about 20 pictures and repeated the phrases "Like this, only more natural looking" and "I only like _______ part." She also addressed grow out and sensed my major hesitation with upkeep, so she suggested we place the highlights in places that wouldn't would have noticeable grow out... two months later, and I'm the only one who knows where the grow out is because she placed my highlights so well. Also, for those with curly hair, she's a genius! I've gone to her multiple times for cuts and she's the only stylist I've ever had gets the whole "I want it short but want to be able to throw it up in a ponytail" request. And there's something about the way she cuts it - her cuts bring out the curls but also manage to look great after blowing it out. read more

I recently moved to Bellingham from Seattle, and was desperately looking for a new hair salon when I stumbled upon this gem right here on Yelp! I honestly chose this particular salon because I liked the name, and I am SO glad I did! This is hands down the best salon I have ever gone to. Let me tell you, my hair was a NIGHTMARE before I went and saw Lindy...I had extremely chemically fried hair from previously experimenting on my own hair, and then an awful attempt at a color correction from PURPLE hair that left me with stringy dark brown and SEAFOAM GREEN hair. I am not exaggerating. Although it may have been a "fashion forward" look, it was just too wild for me, and just not what I wanted. Anyway, my hair was (and technically still is) permanently green, literally. I walked into this salon expecting to hear that my hair was a lost cause, but that wasn't the case. Lindy made me feel comfortable and confident that I was putting my hair in her hands, and she explained in depth what my options were. This woman knows her stuff! She took my crazy awful hair and transformed it from trash to the cutest cut and color I have ever had. I went from nasty green to a fiery deep red in two sittings 6 weeks apart. I posted pictures of my hair before I came in, then one of the color it was in between to set up a base color, and then the cut and color that I got done yesterday. I am beyond satisfied with my experience at this salon, and I will keep going to see Lindy as long as I live in Washington, even if I move out of Bellingham. She's that good. Seriously. read more

I had never been to Looking Glass before, but I followed Megan there and love it! It's such a relaxing, hip place to spend a few hours getting pampered. Megan is a great stylist. I saw her as a walk in and she bravely took my faded, bleached out shoulder length hair to a stylish, ombre A-line bob. It was a drastic change for me, and she put me at ease, offered advice and the result was beautiful! She does great work, but is also so fun to be around. I was really needing a trim and did a walk in appointment here with Lindy. She suggested I go considerably shorter and I was in that kind of mood so we went for it. I LOVE my funky cute haircut. She really listened to what I liked and didn't, she was friendly and easy to chat with, and it was very reasonably priced. This is the first time I have been moved to write a yelp review. I travel alot, and my hair is not my first priority most of the time.
