If I could give this bakery a rating based solely on presentation I would give it 5 stars. I was beyond happy with the decorations! It was beautiful and they altered the colors on the cake (changed from blue/purple to white/pink) per my request! I ordered a Wedded Bliss (almond) 6in cake that serves 8-10 people and it was more than enough cake! You also get the donuts and cake filled cone on top The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because the frosting had a very strong almond extract flavor. I thought it would be a lighter flavor but the cake it's self was fluffy and delicious! In short, I would recommend this bakery. I love getting the chance to try a new bakery. Especially one in the suburbs that can compete with the ones in the city, which can be hard to find. Everyone of them is different and seems to have their own take on many of the classics. I've found that few local bakeries actually make macarons and this place does them well. Then to top it off they have fruity pebbles macarons....can it possibly get any better?!? The macarons themselves were outstanding. Probably because I've never had a fruity pebble one and the originality just puts the classic over the top. You have to have a sweet tooth for these babies, because they are quite sugary. But once you have one, it's unbelievably hard to not continue grabbing them. The outside is rolled in the classic cereal to give it a festive look. Highly suggest trying these. I was also able to try their cinnamon rolls which they are known for. These give your classic Cinnabon's a run for their money. Nice balance of sweetness from the glaze and the buttery cinnamon within. Can't wait to get back here and try some of their other bakery items. Absolutely blown away by my gorgeous surprise birthday cake!! I have never seen such a pretty cake before. The cake was originally supposed to have blue and purple accents but they customized the colors to be pink for me. My sister custom ordered an 6 inch round cake for me; wedding cake flavor with vanilla almond frosting. The cake served 7 people and we still had leftovers for later. The wedding cake was soft and good but the frosting is the only reason this cake isn't getting a full 5 stars from me. The almond extract flavoring was overpowering and made the frosting overwhelming. The consistency of the frosting was great though and I did enjoy little helpings of the frosting with each bit of cake. This last little point is what really sold me on this bakery... the donuts on the top of the cake were DELICIOUS! I thought that they would be more for decorative purposes but they were very good, I actually would order one on it's own. The cake filled ice cream cone on top was also very good and just enough to munch on later. *Keep in mind that these cake need to be refrigerated and it was difficult fitting it in to our home fridge due to the height of the cake but we made it work. Make a space in your home fridge before bringing one of these delicious cakes home. I highly recommend Vanilla Sugar Bakery when you're looking for a cake that WOWS!! Finally had the opportunity to try the cupcakes as was walking by on one of the days they were open to walk-ins. Loved the cupcake so came back next day to buy several for desert for dinner party. The day before I was told to come when the opened to ensure best selection. So I went at 10 when they opened and the woman was very stressed as they were trying to finish up orders for the day. I was looking to add to the cupcake order with chocolate chip cookies. They didn't have any but she said they might have some later. She wasn't sure because they needed to finish up the days orders. She said she would call me but she never did. So overall assessment the cupcakes were great. Service not great. My advise is if you can't support walkin sales don't bother or hire someone to service the walk in businesses. Last week my work BFF brought me some goodies from Vanilla Sugar Bakery for my birthday. She knows me all too well because when I opened the adorable box it was full of brownies and M&M cookies. It pained me a bit to share them with my coworkers (just kidding...kinda) but I did. I kept one of each for myself though so I could properly give my two cents. You MUST get their brownie. It's definitely top three brownies I've ever had. It was so fudgy, rich and thick, each bite getting better than the last. I bought a couple items last week from this bakery and was definitely disappointed. The frosting they use has some kind of an "off" flavor, the only way I can think of to describe it is a "chemically" flavor. My mom and a friend also thought the same that the frosting just wasn't right. Not sure if we got a bad batch but we also had the same issue with the sandwich cookies. We ended up tossing all the cupcakes and cookies. I will say the salted caramel macaron was good, but for that alone, I won't be trying this place again. Service was alright, nothing special. Our tasting was so yummy and Norma was so patient with our questions - even offering advice of her own from personal experience with our best interests in mind. She even suggested a great idea of accommodating our family members with nut allergies. Leading up to the wedding day, she responded to my emails in such a prompt and friendly manner - advising on the cake drum, the color of the ribbon on our cake decor, as well as what time we should coordinate with our florist for when to have flowers ready. Her team also made sure that *they* were the ones to set up the cake at the venue in a timeframe that made sense, including arranging the cake topper and flowers on the cake themselves. That was especially key to my husband and I - we knew that VSB was dedicated to their product through-and-through. Our layers were chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream, wedded bliss, chocolate with salted caramel, and white chocolate with raspberry filling - all were out of this world delicious, but our absolute favorite was wedding bliss. All of our guests loved the cake, and even begged to try all the different flavors we picked. We stumbled upon Vanilla Sugar Bakery while walking home from lunch in downtown Glen Ellyn and indulged our sweet tooth with a mixed result. My wife is a cupcake fanatic so she wasted no time at all choosing a couple cupcakes that caught her fancy. I'm more of a cookie guy so I went with a standard big M&M sugar cookie. The woman staffing that day said she was one of the owners and was very friendly and happy to answer any questions we had. Unable to wait, we consumed the treats immediately upon returning home and had mixed results. My wife exclaimed that the cupcakes were phenomenal. I, on the other hand, found my cookie to be a bit on the dry side... it seemed as if it had been sitting out for a few days (aka it wasn't freshly made). Given that everything about this cupcake shop (bakery) is quintessential small town, which we love and adore, and it has received the seal of approval from my wife, I'm sure we'll be back again soon. My wife loves cupcakes. That's an easy excuse for me to say that we should stop at a bakery and check out their cupcakes. It's not like I'm not going to have a cupcake or 3 myself! So we happen to notice Vanilla Sugar Bakery as we were leaving Gnarly Knots. They are only about a block away. Knowing that we were going to celebrate our nephews birthday, we picked up 6 cupcakes and this oatmeal peanut butter sandwich cookie to take with us. We were at the bakery in the early afternoon and they had a decent supply of cupcakes as it seemed that there were more cupcakes and treats earlier. This we believe is true as the gentleman before us was telling us how much he loved their treats and that they also catered their wedding. He really convinced us when he purchased an entire display case of bars and two dozen cupcakes. Some of which we would have tried. Oh well, its not like we didn't get a half a dozen plus some other treats. Of the mix of cupcakes that we purchased, the carrot cake and raspberry were my favorites. The best item, by far and away the best item was that cookie sandwich. Two soft oatmeal cookies around some killer peanut butter frosting of some sort that I would gladly eat with a spoon. In fact my wife wanted that as once again I didn't think it would be that good. She showed enough pity on me to give me a bite while we were driving.....well actually two bites. Bless her heart. You know that you can't be in a bad mood when you A) walk into a room that's painted bubble gum pink or B) when desserts are involved. Lucky for me, Vanilla Sugar has both which kept me on cloud 9 for the rest of the day. I came for the macarons but I was happy to see they also had coffee. I ordered a medium iced mocha and it was the best coffee I've had in awhile. There were only 2 flavors of macarons available (aww, sad) so I went for 2 of each- the princess and the salted caramel. Both were really tasty but the salted caramel was my favorite. I should also say that I normally hate salted caramel macarons because the flavor always tastes either way too sweet or way too salty. Theirs is the exception to the rule -- it was completely perfect in every aspect. Being the nice wife that I am, I brought home the PBO cookie sandwich for my husband. I really had no idea what to get him and just picked the first thing that I thought might remotely interest him. I was actually hoping to pick something he hated so I could eat it later, but alas, he loved it. It tasted exactly like the Peanut Butter Sandwich Girl Scout cookies. I have been wanting to go to this bakery since I got pregnant last year. Because of their hours I was never able to get in after work. Finally made my way in a few weeks ago and VSB did NOT disappoint. I got a few cupcakes off the curbside menu- birthday cake explosion, salted caramel, chocolate pie, funfetti. I loved that the cupcakes were filled with goodies. I think my favorite had to be the salted caramel. But I tried them all and they were all so yummy! This is right in the heart of downtown Winfield in a cute little strip center. While I'm all about local business and keeping it alive, I can't give this place 5 stars. Let's start with the food. Cupcakes are great! Creative flavors and pretty presentation. Moist and soft, but I wouldn't call them the greatest cupcakes I've ever had. Better than Small Cakes? On an average day, I would say yes. Their cookies and macaroons, meh. The macaroons were especially disappointing because they were just straight sweet with very little flavor to them. Then I hit a super salty spot, and while it actually complimented the sweet very well, I wish it had been throughout the entire macaroon. They get top stats for being friendly. I've never had anyone rude or even not attentive when I've come in. Everyone has been very sweet, no pun intended. But I have to dock a star (and I don't wanna!) just for the inside of the place. The colors are AWESOME, but the display case with the cupcakes and lack of decor makes the place seem desolate. Some of the cookies and cupcakes are hard to see because of the display case, and it's not lit, and there's nothing really on the shelves surrounding the seated area. It just looks barren. A little bit of redecoration and that place would be very fun to take kids or have a cup of coffee (which they don't serve decaf so that's a big downer), but as it stands it's just not very welcoming. I've never ordered a cake from here, and I assume that's their speciality because of the lack of on-the-go eats they have, but I do plan on ordering one soon for a birthday. We will see! read more

I have been a loyal customer of VSB for 9 years. I started going to VSB at their old location in Winfield. I don't eat many sweets and am particular when I do, but I can't say enough about this lovely place. Every single item is made completely from scratch. In fact, they ruined all other cakes, cupcakes, scones etc.. for me because now I can tell the difference from prepackaged ingredients to completely made from scratch. Every party I have and my friends have, we order a custom cake or order mini cupcakes (which I love). Growing up in the Wheaton area, this bakery really gives me a taste of home. I love the owners and appreciate how they always accommodate my requests and handle everything with the utmost professionalism. Also the consensus from all my referrals. There is no way you're going to leave Vanilla Sugar unhappy. There is such a variety here that there is something for everyone. Cupcakes, muffins, scones, pie, brownies, cookies, macarons...the hard part is having restraint! I bought a Creme Brulee cheesecake bar and an Apple Pie bar, both $5 each, to bring home and share for dessert. The bars are generously sized and ideal for sharing (or not...). Both were amazing, I mean, creme brulee and cheesecake are my favorite things, so to combine them is something that will capture my eyes, stomach, and heart. The Apple Pie bar was really good with lots of crumble and caramel drizzled on top. They also serve Metropolis coffee, which is a good pick me up in the middle of the day. The bakery is clean and spacious. I wish we had something like this close to the Naperville or Route 59 train stations. Vanilla Sugar is a hop, skip, and a jump over to the Winfield Metra. I've been coming to VSB since they have opened and I've loved EVERYTHING I've ever tried. The cupcakes are mouth watering, and they always have new, fun flavors to try. The bars are sinful and the cookies are everything you would want them to be. We've ordered special occasion cakes and pies - all to die for. (The caramel apple pie they do for the holidays may just be the best thing I've ever eaten). Everything is fresh and made right there in the bakery, and it is obvious in the taste and quality of everything they have to offer. My fiance, future mother in law and myself went to Vanilla Sugar Bakery for a cake tasting. The first thing the owner tells me (without even an introduction) is that I looked stressed. I actually was feeling great and excited to have a tasting for our wedding cake and far from stressed. So first impression of the owner is that she is socially inept or just rude. Tasting went well and even though all the fresh fruit and organic flavors with no preservatives is a great concept, everything was a bit sweet for our taste and lacked any noticeable fruit flavor. After discussing that we'd like a cake if they could punch up the flavor, we were promised a quote for the cake as well as all the additional cupcakes that weekend. The socially inept store owner clearly doesn't want our business since she has yet to contact us on the quote and it's been three weeks now. How difficult is it really to send over this information? This is your job and business isn't it? Shouldn't you be use to actually doing your job? I have many family members and family friends that were interested in finding a great bakery, sadly Vanilla Sugar Bakery won't be getting my our their business. ***********Update*********** We were under the impression that the tasting was to be $25, so following the consultation we waited around for 20 minutes for someone to come back out to the front to accept payment. When no one returned, we concluded that perhaps we had been mistaken. Vanilla Sugar Bakery doesn't understand the art of communication, a professional store owner should be with their client throughout the consultation process in order to avoid confusion. When my fiance called to apologize for the misunderstanding regarding payment of the cake tasting and offering to make said payment , Norma, one of the owners, only yelled and threw insults. I can only assume that she must have read this review and instead of acting like an adult in the customer service and product profession, she wanted to bully a respectable man making a friendly gesture to resolve a misunderstanding. Those actions further confirm the overall theme of all compliants found on this forum that Vanilla Sugar Bakery may have a great product , but absolutely terrible customer service. I hope that eventually the sisters realize the error of their ways before their reputation begins to hurt their business. read more

I gave them two chances. Cookie was so salty, my kids wouldn't eat a second bite. The cupcake tasted like a store box mix. Both were rainbow sprinkles, vanilla flavored. I will not return. read more

WE LOVE Vanilla Sugar Bakery!!!! It was definitely a weekly stop for us! I definitely can't wait until they can expand a little bit more and have more variety all day long and maybe longer hours, but knowing they are a new sister run business we work around that! We have tried almost everything they have so I will just list off our favorites! *Lemon Blueberry Scones!!!!! TO DIE FOR!!!!! The glaze is amazing! *Red Velvet cupcakes! We only had one that we ever didn't so much care for but we ordered them weekly for months! LOL *Hostess Cupcake (I think it is Fauxtess or something) Needs a bit more filling but they are soooo good! *Chocolate cupcake with white frosting simply delicious *Peanut butter sandwich cookies *chocolate chip sandwich cookies *Salted Caramel (I don't like them but the other half he says this is his favorite) *Cheesecake Cupcakes every flavor we have had has been AMAZING! I am sure I am forgetting something but those are what I remember! My extended family doesn't care for them (they had the carrot cake cupcakes) and said the frosting was way to sweet. But we LOVE LOVE LOVE them! They are so good! They also have coffee! Which is a great addition and so much more affordable then our usual coffee stop! Service is top notch too! They are making great improvements since they opened! I recommend definitely trying them again or once! They are delicious! I'm pretty sure if I lived closer I would just sleep outside the door! Their cinnamon rolls are beyond amazing! They sell out quick when they have them. I wish they'd make them an everyday staple. Their brownies and bars are divine! The girls are sweet! read more
