    Hair in cupcake

Found a hair in my cupcake. Asked for a refund and they refuse to give me one. This place is not only unhygienic, but also unprofessional.

I was going to the chicken place next door, but saw this place and had to try it I couldn't tell if it was opened with the lights on, but the sign said it was. They mentioned they didn't have everything, but they had I loved. I bought a pack of 4. Excellent cupcakes and loved them.

    Note: $38 Dozen+1

Strap in kids for a tale filled with cupcake delight and customer service horror. A true story of a man's journey to have a sweet treat. It all started as I walked in to Smallcakes after spending a stupid amount of money at the chicken place. This took place on a Friday evening. As we entered, there were 2 other patrons in the establishment. I later suspected they were friends of the cashier based off of the conversation I had over heard and the fact that they didn't buy anything. It was at this very moment our cashier in this story could have provided a 5 star experience, but instead created a 2 star review. As I stood there with my group, looking for recognition in the form of a greeting (of some sort) I was disappointed to only receive an emotionless gaze from her. I chose to break the uncomfortable moment by asking if I could order with her. She responded in the affirmative and I proceeded to overindulge and ordered a dozen cupcakes. This moment was less than ordinary and lacked any traditional communication. It was only after I paid, things went from "meh whatever" to "bleh.. this place sucks" I submit an illustration for this tale of 12 Cupcakes. Or is it 13 Cupcakes? You be the judge. The sign stated $38 - Dozen+1. I'll admit I'm terrible at math, but I got this one. My basic algebra skills kicked in and I determined the following, a dozen is 12. If I add 1 that's 13. The sign states for $38 bucks I can get 13 cupcakes.. BUT our cashier in this story had only given me 12 sugary cakes! Alas, what shall our hero do? I returned to the cashier to claim my 13th cupcake! And so I did. I approached the cashier and explained my concern. I was told, "I'm not giving you a free cupcake." In the same drab and expressionless way that our conversation had started earlier. I explained I'm not asking for a free cupcake, I would like what I paid for. She stated a dozen is already discounted and she again told me she isn't giving me a free cupcake. I was bothered by her word selection because I'm not trying to hustle a cupcake, I just want what I perceived to have paid for. Nonetheless, I replied "ok fine, but can you explain to me how else a customer is supposed to interpret that sign?" Note for the review readers, I'm a pretty rationale person and if $38 for a dozen plus 1 means anything other than $38 for 13 I'm open minded enough to accept that. I just wanted her to clarify what it meant. She said "we'll I don't know what that means". I'll end the review here. My opinion is that customer service is a dying art and this is a prime example. Even when faced with seemingly irrefutable evidence that the customer was correct, she couldn't see the customer's perspective and made a bad situation worse. Mic drop I'm done. Not goin back. (Unless I get the 13th cupcake!)

I don't like leaving a crappy review when it comes to cupcakes. I mean, cupcakes should always be soothing, make up for anything wrong in our days, and make us feel all warm & fuzzy inside. Those extra calories need to count for something. The thing is, I've been a Smallcakes fan for awhile, but after trying them here at least 4x's now (precovid too), I'm just not a fan of this location or their cupcakes. Naperville is better. When the store first opened, the cupcakes fell apart on me. It was a crumbly mess. Gave them time to figure out kinks, came back and while one cupcake tasted ok, the other was meh. Some time ago I picked up a Fat Elvis and Boston Cream and a few more as a gift. After tasting them, I was embarrassed I ever gifted them. The flavor of the Fat Elvis was so artificial I couldn't get over it. And the peanut butter type frosting was equally as artificial and didn't help. The Boston cream was always a safe choice in the past and my favorite, but this time the batter tasted off. Kindof dry and completely fell apart ...again. Recently, they didn't hit the spot. At all. And sat in my fridge for days.. Didn't have a good experience with the Cashier either. Not welcoming and when I asked for a bag was told they don't give bags unless you order a huge box. I really needed a bag so after mentioning more than once she finally handed me one the size of a pillow case..well, at least I had a bag.... Safe to say I'm done with this location which makes me sad really, cause I like to get my fat on when I'm already at Fry The Coop next door! :/

    Dry Old Small Cakes!

It hurts my heart that the experience I had yesterday at small cakes in Elmhurst was horrible!!! The cupcakes I bought for my wife were not fresh! I was shocked! We've never had a problem with Small Cakes in other cities. My surprise for my wife was ruined by dry old cupcakes. My wife called to speak to a manager today. She was told to send an email. The young lady who spoke to her was rude and dismissive. So sad!

I'll be honest, I didn't think they were the greatest. Didn't give me a taste that I would come back for. The 4 star rating is for their presentation. The place itself is very cute and decorated nicely. Cupcakes are presented very nicely as well. I just got spoiled with Molly's Cupcakes, which are the best tasting cupcakes around, in my opinion. My biggest issue here is the price of a single cupcake; $4 or more dollars for a single cupcake? That's a little too much. Molly's, which is in Chicago, is only between $2-$2.75.

I ordered a custom cake for a baby shower and not only did it look exactly like the photo I gave them, it was also excellent red velvet cake and buttercream frosting that everyone loved! I would order a custom cake here anytime!

The cupcakes were okay; nothing to write home about. The red velvet taste like a grocery grade cupcake.

When I think of a quality small local business this place is the model! I will say some of the pastries are of questionable quality, I wouldnt buy a croissant from here. The last one I had was undercooked and layers were fusing. But most stuff is reliably good! Breakfast and lunch food, cakes and cupcakes are all excellent. Doughnuts controversial at my house, but I think they're great. (def better than Dunkin and fair price) Cinnamon rolls, cookies, scones are all good. Drinks are decent enough but if you're a tea/coffee snob and just looking for a beverage you're probably better off going next door (Brewpoint), cos this place's main event is the food. It's also pretty quiet after the morning rush, so good place to snack and get some work done. Has only 3 power outlets by tables, but they're usually not in use anyway 9/10

Let me start by saying that we're a huge fans of small businesses and want to see them succeed…read more I've also worked in plenty of restaurants and coffee shops in my day. Definitely not trying to be a hater. My friend and I were on our way home from Chicago, looked up some bakeries along our route. We stopped here to get some goodies to take home to family, and to snack and have a coffee while we drove 6 hours. My friend ordered: white chocolate coconut latte, 2 donut holes, a strawberry, a salted caramel, and a pink velvet cupcake. I ordered: chocolate pretzel iced latte, a big chocolate chip cookie, tropical fruit (?) danish, coconut, pink velvet, and French silk cupcakes. I'd say between the two of us we probably spent $60+? Walking in the shop is adorable and colorful, an employee had a brightly colored tie dye shirt on and we said hello to them first, commented on how much we liked their shirt, and barely got a response back, let alone a greeting. The employee at the counter wasn't rude but definitely not overly eager to greet or offer up information. Questions were answered when we asked, that was it. When I received my iced latte I asked if they had any straws and just got a head shake in response. Totally fine with no straw, but my friend found a stir stick for me, which was honestly the main reason I wanted a straw so I could stir up what was clearly sitting on the bottom of the cup. Lattes were fine. We tried the chocolate chip cookie in the car and the texture was good, crispier on the edges and the middle was chewy enough. But it tasted very bland, so we didn't finish it. A little while later we decided to try the donut holes, they had good flavor but they were so dry and crumbly, presumably because they were sitting out in the open air, who knows for how long. Also didn't finish those. Even later we decided to try the salted caramel cupcake because I'd read on the case that they had Swiss meringue buttercream so I was really excited about that, and thought for sure this would be where they would excel. While the flavor of the cake was fine, I wouldn't say it tasted like salted caramel, there was some kind of cream in the middle that was good, again not salty or caramely. But that was the heaviest, most dense cupcake I've ever had, and not in a good way. The buttercream was good, and the caramel drizzle on top did taste salty. My husband was so excited that I was bringing home that tropical fruit danish and the coconut cupcake. We tried the coconut cupcake together and again, it had a lot of actual coconut in the batter, it was dense but also dry. We abandoned the cake and ate buttercream, which was good but not coconutty. So we moved onto the French silk cupcake. This cake had a great texture, light and soft, good flavor, some kind of chocolate mousse in the middle was good too. Again, good buttercream, but the top had a bunch of dry, flavorless pie crust chunks all over it. I understand that it was supposed to mimic a French silk pie, but it was such a good cake without the crust chunks. My husband had his pastry today (next day) and though dry he said the middle was good, other than the pineapple in the middle he couldn't taste any other flavor. We tried the pink velvet after dinner tonight and again with the super heavy and dense cake texture, no real flavor, but the cream cheese frosting was yummy. I cannot say how the other cupcakes were, as my friend was so disappointed in the one we shared and the report we gave her about the ones we tried, that she hasn't eaten them. Ultimately the French silk one was the only item that was eaten completely. Keep making that buttercream, it was the best part of everything we bought. I sincerely hope your employees weren't having a hard day, I try to be understanding that you never know what someone is going through, but that's the only reason I can think of for them to be so completely disinterested in helping or talking to paying/tipping/polite customers.

That was the only time she responded right away. We exchanged ideas and I told her what I needed. No response after that. I said I needed pricing and she said she would get it to me that day before 9pm. Radio silence. I didn't want to keep messaging/bothering her but sent her a few messages regardless because I was waiting. Nothing. Two days later I had to message again because I needed confirmation since I was already "talking" with her. No response again. Now the next day, a little upset, I messaged yet again and said "please let me know if you can't, so I can look around elsewhere and place an order." She responded immediately and said she had a hectic weekend and it was super busy. I understand, totally get it. She finally sent me pricing for cakes and cookies, but we decided to just go with the cookies. She said great and that she would get back to me and let me know which ones she could make etc..I said perfect. STILL WAITING. It's been 9 days since I last heard from her. I didn't even get to look around elsewhere because she left me out to dry. And now it's too late cause I need them this weekend. Look, I know it may not be a big order but I wanted to still give her the business. I felt that because it wasn't a big enough order she kind of just tossed me aside and stopped responding. I'm all about supporting small businesses but not at this rate. Even if she responds now (after seeing this review), I will not be placing any orders or recommending her. The people who did recommend Hira to me got something else coming their way, cause this was a horrible experience. 0 stars if I could
