I never knew creating good coffee is complicated. Fortunately, there is Van Buren Coffee that makes buying a great cup of coffee or a bag of coffee beans a simple pleasure. It is a family run business that oozes with their love for coffee. They love the community and they love to give back to organizations that they are passionate about. They roast fair trade and direct trade coffee in their humble building in Paw Paw. There is also a fabulous fair trade shop which features gifts with purpose. I purchased a couple of pairs of beautiful earrings, along with a bag of Guatemala FTO coffee beans. Van Buren Coffee emphasis is to educate, to go to source, to have a story - to talk about where the coffee came from, who grew it and what was important in their lives. The Gettig family cares for their farmers and customers, which is a remarkable story. It's not a traditional coffee cafe, yet it offers some of the best coffee in Southwest Michigan. Coffee. It's one of those things that we can't live without, one of those beverages that we don't seem to care where it comes from, just that enough ends up in our cups to wake us all the way up or to keep us awake. But where does it come from? A bunch of Yelpers were getting together for a coffee club and it just so happened to finally be in my neck of the woods. Being that caffeine is to me what wines are to other people- that and Yelpers are pretty much just about the best bunch of people you could ever hang out with- I decided to stop in and visit with some people, and to get the lowdown on just what Van Buren Coffee Company was all about. They put out a pretty impressive spread for us- hey, brownies and cookies are always welcome- but the main thing is that when the coffee was brought out, well... Have you ever had the perfect cup of coffee? Not too acidic, not too harsh, and the flavor is just right? They're few and far between. I had one here. And then they brought out the cold brew, and added some off-the-shelf salted caramel Coffeemate to it, and, welp- I've been researching how much it would cost me to get one of those blasted gas guns to infuse coffee with, because that had to be one of the most epic cups of coffee- scratch that, caffeinated beverage- I think I've ever had. That wasn't a cuppa, that was an experience. Oh, but that wasn't the end, not at all. Then they decided to show us the process- how they roasted beans, where they got the beans from, and then why they did so. So not only did I get an epic cuppa, I got to smell roasting coffee beans and learn a bit about just where coffee comes from, and why they buy from certain growers. But that's not all- they also have a local community space you can rent out for events, and a small shop with ethically-sourced gifts and decorations and other things that look cool and go for a good cause (I bought a cute wooden kitty-cat for ten dollars and it's become part of the setup on my computer desk!), so take a bit while you're enjoying a good, solid cup of their coffee and nose on through The Shop, as it's called. They also sell beans and ground coffee- I got some beans and I swear they didn't last for a day after I got them home, and they were a big hit. Van Buren Coffee Co. makes it a point to source beans from places where they know the money being paid for these beans will go into the communities where these bean farmers are based, instead of into some big company's pocket without that much trickling down to the community. In the end, I have to say, although this place is a little out of the way to get to, it's worth the trouble. If you have a bit of time and want to change up your coffee routine in Paw Paw, maybe head out here instead of just defaulting to Biggby or Starbucks and check this place out. Grab a cuppa and some beans or ground coffee to go, and spread the word. This place truly is good to the last drop! read more

The coffee is good. More like second wave coffee. Places like star bucks is considered second wave. I prefer specialty coffee aka 3rd wave. I pay very close attention to coffee and where it's from. I roast my own coffee. I love when places go direct to the farms for there coffee beans. Although I like dark roasted coffee I have come to like lighter more in the medium range. Maybe a little lighter but still medium. I have never been in just tasted there coffee from places that have there coffee and brought a bag at whine and harvest. I would love to talk to them about coffee. I can nerd out about coffee for hours. My question is do they serve pour over coffee? The coffee is still really good. Recommend this place. read more

This spot is magical. I always love going into local businesses that do more than one thing, and do both things beautifully. Tromblay Salon in downtown Kalamazoo, for example, is both a stellar salon and an amazing boutique (and if you're not into either those things, there is a lovely lounge with comfy couches to hang out in while your partner gets their hair cut or gets their shop on). Van Buren Coffee Company does even more things with their cool space in Paw Paw. They roast their incredible fair trade coffees on-site but made sure to have extra room in their location so that it can also be used as a community space for events, and they also have a boutique shop featuring ethically sourced gifts from around the world, from jewelry and clothing to fair trade teas. At an Unofficial Yelp Event, we learned quite a bit about coffee and why it's important to this family-run business to source ethically and contribute meaningfully to the communities from which their beans are sourced as well as the community in which we live. This left as yummy a taste in my mouth as the Incredible coffees we tried. I especially liked a caramel mocha-infused nitro preparation of a Sumatra coffee.
