    Hooves, Paws, Tails & Claws

The request was a suggestion when interviewing the company as a candidate to be our dog walker…read more There was never communication to us that there was a problem with walking the dog. Let alone a problem that was deemed "severe" enough to use a painful device to control a dog. Hooves Paws Tails & Claws claimed that they had experience with walking large dogs (this was one of our first questions in the interview) and we were told it would not be a problem. There was no communication to us that there was any problem and they unprofessionally took it upon themselves to make a decision to use a "training collar" on our animal. We would have never condoned the use of such a painful (in my opinion and the opinion of a vet and several trainers) contraption. Bottom line: it was not your call to make the judgement to use anything on our dog other than what was provided. If you had a problem or difficulty it was to have been communicated to us and we are in charge of making that decision. Research: Should You Use a Pinch Collar on a Dog? By Susan Leisuredel Related Entries: pinch collars dog behavior training Instructions Pinch Collars Pinch Step 1: Pinch collars (also known as prong collars) use pain to condition behavior. Based on the pressure applied, the pain can range from mild discomfort to serious and sharp pain. Current research in dog training has revealed that any training based on pain and aversion to pain will be ineffective in the long-term, and will often cause unwanted behaviors in response to the pain.Pinch Collars are Difficult to Use Step 1: The pinch collar can be difficult to size correctly and to put on a dog. If the collar is used incorrectly, the dog could suffer intense pain and even injuries and nerve damage. Correct sizing and placement of pinch collars is critical for the safety of the dog and the effectiveness of the training.Pinch Collars Only Work When They are On Step 1: One of the biggest drawbacks to using pinch collars (or other aversive training methods) is that the dog learns to only respond when the collar is on and the person is holding the leash. Since the dog changes behavior to learn to avoid the pain, the absence of the collar means that the dog has no motivation to respond.Pinch Collars Only Work When Timed Perfectly Step 1: In order for an aversive training to work even in the short-term, the punishment (the "pinch" from the collar) must be applied immediately after the unwanted behavior starts and pressure must stop immediately at the moment that the unwanted behavior stops. Many trainers suggest a 5-second window to discourage or encourage behavior. Most dog owners who are not professional dog trainers are not skilled enough to use the pinch collar effectively in the 5-second window.Positive Training Step 1: Pinch collars rely on training based on avoiding a punishment. Recent research in dog behavior (and in human behavior) shows that positive training based on rewards is more effective and long-lasting. A dog will be more likely to offer a correct behavior if there is a chance for a positive reward. This type of training works at all times, not just when a certain type of training device (like a pinch collar) is applied.

We couldn't recommend Angel Arms Pet Care enough. They have been nothing short of amazing. My wife…read moreand I just had our first child and with everything we needed to worry about at the time, our yellow lab Brody was not one of them because of Angel Arms. Thanks to Jude and Jennie we didn't even have to think about him. Jennie came with only a few hours notice, adjusted her schedule to let him out. And later that day Jude came and picked him for 3 days. He went to the park, went on walks, and played with her dogs. After taking such amazing care of him, she even dropped him back off for us! We couldn't have asked for a better and more easy experience. Not to mention that Jennie does an excellent job at not only coming everyday to walk Brody, she also keeps us informed, plays fetch, and sends us fantastic pictures and videos. She even brought her daughter to our walking appointments so Brody would get used to walking next to a stroller. And after walking my 9 month old nephew in a stroller with Brody, she trained him so well. That being said, if you want a company with great people who you can rely on, friendly people who will go above and beyond for all of your pets needs, and never make you feel like you're bothering them with questions and concerns, Angel Arms is that company.
