We have been to Valley Kitchen twice and day outdoor both times. The food is delicious and the scenery is beautiful, however, the service has been very slow both times. We stayed at the ranch, and the Valley Kitchen is the only restaurant in the resort that serves dinner at around 9pm. Nothing from what we ordered really made us happy. Halibut ceviche ($18) - I felt cheated on this! The ceviche comes in a small cup. The ceviche was mixed with a spring mix salad. It was mostly salad with a few bits and pieces of fish! It was also very bland, no spicy kick at all and I had to squeeze more lemon for taste. It was served with some tortilla chips. Oysters ($18) - served portion has 6 oysters. Not sure what kind. It came with kind of a vinegar dip. Crab Cake ($21) - read carefully, there is no 's' there. It really just was one single crab cake. The piece was small, perhaps 3 tiny bites for a not so hungry petite lady, and serves with a small pile of arugula leaves. Not worth the money... skip this! Charcuterie board ($19) - good for 2. About 4 pieces each of salami, prosciutto, another cured meat which I didn't hear what it was, olives, pickles, toasted bread, and mustard. It's not outstanding but the only one we liked from our order. Service is friendly. The ambience is okay, but they could add some more lighting. I saw customers from other tables turn on the phone flashlight just to read the menu! Carmel Vaey Ranch is a family resort, so expect lots of kids and even dogs inside the restaurant. read more

We spent Christmas day here enjoying a wonderful vegetarian friendly brunch with beagle boy - INSIDE - the restaurant. Not only was the ambiance, service an food incredible, we spent some time walking around the property and encountered wild turkeys, and herds of deer roaming the gorgeous wooded property. We started with the Artichoke Spinach Gratin $14.00 Toasted Peasant Bread and Pita - you must GET THIS! Huge chunks of artichokes in a bubbly piping hot ramekin easily shared, and filling for two ;) Shared the Valley Garden Soup of the Day $10.00 Harvest from Swank Farms, Garnish from Our Garden - it was broccoli and so bright and green - utterly delicious! And for our main entree Hand Cut Fettuccini Spinach Pasta $19.00 Blistered Tomatoes, Portobello Mushroom, Cold Press Olive Oil and Citrus, Garlic Toast Our pasta arrived sans portobello, and Michael (the manager) was kind enough to fix it for us delivering a smoking hot buttery garlic bowl of enoki mushroom (bonus!) The waitstaff was super nice to beagle boy and brought him his own water bowl, which he promptly knocked over (ugh!) and they brought out a mop to clean up the mess. We stayed at Carmel Valley Ranch with the "play hooky" promo so we had breakfast credits here. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast and didn't mind going back to back days! I loved the crab cake Benedict and French toast. I got a traditional breakfast the second day and subbed toast for pancakes - so light and fluffy! I 100% recommend the tea, their honey is to die for! It comes from their own bees and is perfectly sweet! We also decided to come back for dinner as my husband wanted to try the tomahawk experience - side note: it is worth the money! That steak was cooked phenomenally! I had the burger and did t enjoy it quite as much as I thought I would - definitely would order something else if we went back. The wine list looks lovely but I recommend bringing a bottle, corkage fee of $25. read more

Off the beaten path but oh so worth it. Google Maps will take you to the entrance of a golf course/resort - follow the road up about a mile, and when you reach the wooden bridge, turn right into the little parking lot. You're actually eating at a resort in the Carmel Valley, which wasn't obvious when I booked it. I love that this place has three dog-friendly tables near the front, INSIDE. It was perfect on a super rainy day out wine tasting in the valley with our two weiner dogs. I'd just recommend only if your dogs are not reactive as there are a LOT of dogs at the resort - welcome to Carmel! I had the Moules Frites and I have to say, hands down, these were the BEST and biggest mussels I've ever had in my entire life (and this is pretty much my go-to in any coastal spot I visit, including Carmel). I legitimately didn't know mussels could be this big, so my hat's off to this place. And for $22, you can't beat that value for money! My husband had the chicken schnitzel burger and salad and he was also very pleased with his meal and portion size. This place isn't exactly around the corner, but if you are ever planning on wine tasting in Carmel Valley, I'd highly recommend doing lunch here before going deeper into the valley. My only slight complaint was that while our server was nice, I couldn't help but feel that we were not his highest priority table and had a bit of an air of arrogance about him, but certainly not enough to even downgrade how great the food and overall experience was! read more

If you are fortunate enough to visit Carmel Valley Ranch, they have a great bar. I believe they are open all day, at least every time I was in there while spending a 5 night getaway at the resort. We really enjoyed having dinner at the bar more casual plus you get to meet and talk to some of the people that are the engine of the machine. Things that standout to make this business great again is the people. Josh is a great bartender and there is a second bartender, which I apologize I forgot his name. They were exceptional people that make you want to go back just to have another old fashioned, cocktail. read more

We stayed at carmel valley ranch for a staycation in the middle of the pandemic. We ordered takeout breakfast from valley kitchen everyday and everything was always packed perfectly and tasted great!! I'm a huge fan of this restaurant. We stayed a week so we've pretty much tried everything on the menu. I wasn't disappointed by any of the selections. I personally loved the salmon bagel and the oat bran muffins - I even came back just to order some muffins to go a subsequent weekend we were in Carmel but staying at bernardus. They do outdoor dining so if your risk tolerance is higher than mine, you can opt for that. Definitely make a reservation in advance. I noticed they were quite busy during meal times. Compared to the restaurant at Bernardus, I'd have to say I enjoyed valley kitchen more. Not to say the other one is bad, they're a bit more experimental and that has positives and negatives. read more

Fabulous quality food. I personally loved the Caesar salad, though for some the dressing might be too heavy and too much. For me, I like the consistency and garlic flavor and it was just tossed real fresh to order. The burgers are pretty decent though small in size, but flavorful and fresh. And the setting whether you're sitting inside and outdoors is just beautiful especially on a nice warm day if you're out by the pool. After staying several times at Carmel Valley Ranch in 2020, we have determined that Valley Kitchen could be better. We didn't want to be too critical, but again we had a "weird" experience ordering from the restaurant and interacting with some staff. Some staff are very nice and execute on service principled expertly (both my wife and I come from service industries and have worked in restaurants) while others leave us wondering what they are doing at a resort of this caliber. For example, the restaurant closes at 10 and whenever we have ordered or showed up later, it is always a question of whether we can be served even for takeout. The staff should always know if and when a service is available and if Hyatt advertises the restaurant is open until 10 then it shouldn't be a question. And at the end of the night, staff at the restaurant are so clearly ready to get out of there. The dinner options and food is good albeit pricey, but breakfast and coffee was very underwhelming, I would say to the level of "not that good". Invest in better breakfast and coffee, partner with Verve or Blue Bottle or some other local brand that produces great coffee, please. In summary, if you can afford Carmel Valley Ranch (we use points) then the prices won't matter, but service and food/coffee quality can definitely be improved. read more

My Lady and I had a date to visit the Valley Kitchen at Carmel Valley Ranch. We had the best time there with an amazing dinner and evening. Upon arrival we were greeted by the Valet and two of them opened up our door to our car and welcomed us in. The ambiance was immediate noticeable with waiter flowing in the fountains and as we entered the main door leading into the lobby there was a huge fireplace burning inside. We were once again greeted by two hosts who opened up the massive doors. Were amazed at the beauty of this place. It felt like a large lodge in Grand Tetons! We were then greeted by the Hostess and taken to our private dining room away from the bar. We were given a very private table for two with a view of the outside oaks thru the huge plate glass windows. We were immediately offered drink menus and fresh iced water. We ordered cocktails and they came back fast. The servers came out with warm fresh sourdough bread with herbed butter, and fresh in house pickled vegetables that were very tasty. The main server Ishmael came out and greeted us with good cheers for us being there to dine on our date night for my Wife's Birthday. He told us all about the specials and there were many choices. We looked over the menus while we sipped our drinks. We discovered that they have a special steak called the Tomahawk Ribeye Steak that was a 28 ounce steak with a long bone trimmed. He told us about how it was to be served table side with a large cat iron pan filled with potatoes, veggies, mushrooms, baby onions, whole garlic and 5 sides of dipping sauces. We were sold on that option and ordered the meal for two. We also split a ceaser salad that was delicious. When our main course arrived we were blown away how big and beautiful the serving was. The manager of the kitchen came out and personally cut our tomahawk steak table side on a large wood cutting board on a rolling cart. He then served my Wife here then mine. It was an incredible experience and one we will long remember. After we finished our amazing dinner the server Ishmael came out with others with a beautiful cheesecake with a candle light up for my beautiful wife on her special day. We will return here soon to try more meals prepared by Executive Chef Tim Woods. After our dinner we walked about the large lodge and enjoyed many of paintings decorating the walls and Photo exhibits. We then went to the main lobby with the massive fireplace and sat and enjoyed the ambiance of the grand fIreplace and couches and relaxing chairs. Before I say anything about my experience at this wonderful restaurant, I'd like to say that this is possibly the best hidden gem of Carmel Valley. Drive here is incredibly picturesque and it already puts you in a good mood. Beautiful vineyards and pristine cold courts with breathtaking views of mountains are really something. I'll do my review from the beginning of our experiment to the end. So first of all I'm busy days like weekends, I'd recommend to make a reservation. Parking is very close by to the restaurant and you also have a ballet option if that's what you prefer. Then you have a very nice short stroll pass pretty water decorative fountain and hotel reception, then walk to the left and you'll see a hostess stand. Our hostess was very pleasant lady that took us to our date table by the fireplace. The large fireplace was real! I was so happy, because now it's rather rare to see a real fire place at the newer establishments. Cracking wood and cozy scent of burning fireplace really added romantic touch to our experience here. Wine selection here is wonderful, so I picked local California wine and my helped husband pair his fish with nice white wine with lemon zest tone. For appetizer we picked charcuterie board, it was very delightful combination of meats and I loved torched bread touch as well. Would've liked some cheese with it as well, just to give that full wine pairing experience. That's literally the only note that I have about this establishment. My husband ordered catch of the day, a sea-bass and it was delicious according to him. I ordered scallops and these have to be the best scallops I had in my live. They were perfectly seared on both sides perfectly golden brown , with that perfect tenderness in the middle and buttery texture. Combination of creamy pure, lentils and bitter greens was heavenly and I appreciate extra care and thought that was put into preparing and plating of my dish. Huge compliments for attention to the detail. In place Luke this you can't just leave without having something sweet, that's exactly what we did. I picked almond joy, which by the way, was way more scrumptious than a candy bar that this dessert was named after. My dear love was tempted by freshly baked cookies and glass of milk, delicious soft baked goddess and cold milk were very yummy, nice touch of nostalgia. Not very sweet matcha sponge cake with lemony cream and beautifully layered chocolate squares was a very smooth flavor explosion and my palette couldn't be more happy. It was such an exciting and delicious gastronomic experience and I absolutely cannot wait time come back and get engulfed into amazing atmosphere with heavenly cuisine. But the ambiance and setting are fantastic. Sort of a long review, so here's the summary: We have been eating here for about 8 years. Things have been going downhill since the pandemic. Maybe it's the new ownership by Hyatt? Cheap wine charged at a ridiculous premium, less choices for food and what is offered is so expensive for the portion size and the most terrible ribeye ever. Menu now has hardly any delicious, crowd pleasing appetizers anymore... lots of veggies. For appetizers, there used to be Poke, ceviche, the French onion dip among other things. Even though things got more expensive and more boring, we decided to just go there when we were trying to eat super good, but the last couple visits have been bad regardless. For one, they changed their wine list. The wines by the glass have gotten less local and cheap wine is offered at more than the usual premium. The most egregious example is that they charge $20/glass for Cambria Chardonnay when it is available for $13 for the entire bottle. So a 400% profit on cheap wine? We used to go here for special occasions and get the Filet Mignon with potatoes at gratin and green beans. It was so delicious. They are now serving the worst steak I have ever tasted. It's a $59 ribeye that's super dense, dry and tasteless. It doesn't resemble any ribeye I've ever had... The consistency of the meat would make sense if it was a bad pork chop. My mom was with me and she agreed it was terrible. We had a few bites and fed it to our dog. They aren't serving mashed potatoes or potatoes au gratin at all anymore. Too much work? One has to wonder if they are making the same choices with their meat as with their wine - super cheap meat charged at a premium? We wanted to take a dinner home to a friend, so we tried to play it safe and order the chicken. It was a very small dinner. It no longer comes with any rice or potatoes, just veggies. Our friend is athletic and the meal wouldn't fill him up. So we ordered a side of potatoes roasted and they charged us $12 on top of an already expensive meal ($71 total). It's all just too much. I will say, bartenders/servers are still wonderful and their salads are delicious. Ceasar salad is one of the best. Honestly, we have had wonderful experiences at Bernardus lately, so we will be going there unless we want a Ceasar salad. read more

Really wonderful service. Very prompt and friendly. Also very attentive. Came for dinner and ordered the duck breast which was incredible. So tender and flavorful with the skin done perfectly. We stayed at the Carmel Valley Ranch and figured that we would also have dinner there. It's our fault that we didn't make a reservations but man, what a horrible experience when we waited in line to try to get seated with the hostess! She told us that she would likely be able to get us the outdoor table in "a few minutes" that just became available, and asked us to wait at the table by the side. But in the next 15 minutes, she started seating many people (mind you, I guess half of them would have reservations). All of a sudden, the outdoor table became unavailable, while getting cold feet and leaving us waiting without any updates. I couldn't help but went back to check with her after 20 minutes and she told me to wait again. Finally, she said she could help us after 30 minutes but it'd be only indoors. Then we told her that if we knew that it's not what we said we wanted, I could have just ordered takeout. And so we did, at the bar, and again that took another 30 min., and a lot of back and forth despite the bartender told me that he would bring me the food where we were waiting outside by the pool. The food turned out OK, though, which is why I give them 2 stars instead of 1. I know that the staff is overworked (greedy corporation!) and busy, but it probably is customer satisfaction 101 that you should never set the wrong expectation by promising something that you can't deliver! The second one lined up with no reservation just to order to go order at the hostess. It took them 10 minutes to order and the hostess did not help the people actually with reservation. I stayed at Carmel Valley Ranch with the boyfriend and pup this weekend. I made reservations for dinner a week in advance and was looking forward to trying their Tomahawk experience. It did not disappoint! It was the perfect way to start our weekend getaway! I thought coming in, I'd be seated outside in the patio area because I had a dog with me, but to my surprise, we were seated inside near the entrance! I was SO happy because I was freezing in the car ride over (the dog wanted the windows down...) and I didn't want to spend another 2 hours outdoors -- that's a cold waiting to happen!! We ordered a salad, the tomahawk experience, and a few drinks. The bread and butter they offered us was really good; I was worried we were going to get full off bread and drinks before the main course arrived. I read reviews that the food / service was a bit slow, which I do agree with, but our waiter was amazing and I think he was responsible for a good amount of tables that night so we were understanding. He still gave us a great experience and checked in on us every so often! The Tomahawk experience is a must try if you come here ($115 and the perfect amount for the two of us to share). It's a 28 oz steak of goodness and comes with 3 sauces for dipping. I really like the red wine reduction sauce and my boyfriend enjoyed the chimichurri sauce. The Chef's special "I'm stuffed" potatoes are TO DIE FOR!!! It was so fluffy; when my boyfriend scooped some for me and I saw how it fell down my plate like a waterfall, I knew it was going to be some heavenly potatoes. It was so good that we ordered another side of it! I don't ever want to know how much butter was used to make it though.. :) AND we are checking out today, and you betcha my last stop will be Valley Kitchen. I'll be ordering 3 I'm stuffed potatoes to go!!! Enough about the delicious potatoes. One more thing I wanted to add about the experience was how well taken care of my puppy was! There was a dog menu and we ordered the chicken and rice for the little rascal. The presentation of his bowl was beautiful with the garden vegetables (sadly, my dog isn't a veggie lover) and he devoured the meal within minutes. He made a bit of a mess with his water bowl (another dog got seated next to us and he got excited and stepped on his water bowl) but our waiter was quick to clean it up for us! Valley Kitchen is awarded the Best Of Award of Excellence in 2015 by Wine Spectator. It's the major restaurant located inside Carmel Valley Ranch. We chose this restaurant for our anniversary dinner since we stayed here for our anniversary weekend getaway. We also had our breakfast here before leaving the beautiful ranch. Two experiences left us different perspectives about this restaurant. If you are thinking about eating here while staying overnight or just for one dinner, here are some valuable tips: - If you stay at the hotel or spend the time around the Lodge from 6pm to 10pm, they have free s'mores night by the pool everyday. - Free coffee and tea with to-go cups at the Library (near the restaurant) for everyone to enjoy in the morning. - If you only come to enjoy the ranch activities, I think they have iced water at the Library for guests. 1) Anniversary dinner (2.5/5): My bae made a reservation here for our anniversary dinner while booking our weekend getaway. He requested for a surprise dessert. Unfortunately, nothing came. Since Carmel Valley Ranch has their own garden and bases their menu on local offerings, their menu changes monthly. We ordered crab cakes, Vietnamese bun cha (Vietnamese Pork Meatball and Noodle Salad) , halibut ceviche and Angus rip-eye. As much expectation I had, their delivery was mediocre. The most disappointing dish was the Vietnamese bun cha. They literally needed to send a representative from their kitchen to an authentic Vietnamese restaurant (preferably in San Jose where you can get the best Vietnamese food) to taste Vietnamese rice noodles and pork paddies. Please don't put Vietnamese food on your menu without serving my people food justice. Thanks. 2) Breakfast (4/4): We ordered the Double Smoked Bacon and Poached Eggs ($17) and Chef's Red's donuts from local donut shop established in 1950 ($6 each). I thought the donuts would have some unexpected flavors. Nope. They are straight up regular donuts with sugar glaze. I LOVE THE EGGS BENEDICT. ORDER IT. DON'T QUESTION IT! This is my picture-perfect, the best version of eggs benedict I have ever had. The crispy hash brown had a perfect level of saltiness. Apparently, management at Valley Kitchen has been taking note of the complaints and made some necessary changes. I came here last night with my friend for dinner. We both ordered some wine, a salad, and an entree. I had the beet salad--positively delicious and well balanced. She had the burrata and tomato and was equally happy. I ordered the salmon for an entree, and she ordered appetizer crab cakes. My salmon was delicious and accompanied by a lovely pea puree. Her crab cakes were good, but incredibly small--even for an appetizer portion. I don't give it five stars (it deserves 4.5) because the lack of table cloths and casual attire of the staff is irksome. When you are paying those prices, you don't want to feel as though you are at a hipster joint and slaughterhouse. Kudos to Valley Kitchen for working out the kinks and getting it right again. read more

Food is average. Service is friendly but they got our orders wrong on 3 different visits! Either food was missing or we were brought a different item. Dinner was over-priced and flavor for the entree did not meet expectations. Halibut ceviche was excellent though. Kid friendly. read more
