It's a strange little cafe, part of a hotel (have never stayed at the Hotel though) Palmer is kind of quirky (to me, as an English person) and I love being able to see the water tower from the windows, which screams old town America, like I used to see in movies. Lots of booths and tables, quite a big dining room. It's not fancy. But it's always busy. It's very affordable. We often used to come for just a piece of pie, and they had a delicious blueberry pie, which unfortunately wasn't offered the other night when I was there. I don't care too much for banana cream this or chocolate chess that - they're just too sweet for me, I'm not that much of a dessert person. I was sort of hoping they might have pumpkin pie, as it's almost that time but they didn't have any. I try to have it at least once or twice in fall. I went for the least offensive option which in this case was apple pie. I went for a la mode, and as the server had trouble understanding my accent (happens a lot) I gave her my best American accent of a la mode, which made her laugh. I googled why having ice cream on your pie is called a la mode, because apparently, USA is the only country that uses this term anymore. A la mode, literally translates to in the fashion. A strange term to describe ice cream on your pie. Anyway, I don't know why I got it, as I don't really like solid ice cream, I like it when it gets melty, or to be honest, I would rather have had heavy cream, but rarely does a restaurant or cafe offer that as an option, like you'd get in England. The pie came, it was huge, and there was a half gallon of ice cream on it. I gave it to husband, and he put it on top of his cheesecake, after scraping off the whipped cream, and giving that to me. This was whipped cream from a can I believe, as it's very aerated. The pie was pretty good and nicely spiced with cinnamon, which husband objected to. He said it had a little too much in, but I liked it. One of the strangest things about the menu - which is pretty extensive by the way, are the prices. There are no round numbers, and the cents are never the same either. I assume this is because of the sales tax? Like one thing might be $4.33, then something else will be $7.59 so that when they ring it up and add the sales tax, it comes out at a nice round number? Is that right? Anyway, no complaints, you can always get a seat, service is prompt and friendly, and there's great views from the window seats. read more

Better than any 24-hr eatery in Anchorage and it's in tiny 'lil Palmer! We ended up here on Thanksgiving day. It's an annual tradition of mine to go ice climbing up at Caribou Creek (https://www.yelp.com/biz/caribou-creek-recreational-mining-area-sutton) and then do thanksgiving at the nearby(-ish) Alpine Inn (https://www.yelp.com/biz/alpine-inn-palmer ) Well, on this Thanksgiving...Alpine Inn was closed. So we had burned up lots of calories ice climbing all day and had no way to replenish them. Valley Hotel to the rescue! The Thanksgiving plate included just about everything you could ask for, perfectly portioned, for about $20. I think it's going to become my new annual stop! Time and time again I try to give this place a chance and every time it is beyond subpar and I wish I had saved my money and cooked at home. Waitresses are usually nice, but the food is trash. We were looking for somewhere for lunch and ones that were listed were full with waiting list. The place is in a center that has a gym and other health related offices then down the hall I could smell good coffee so I followed my nose. You wait in line and order at counter; great list of panini, sandwiches, salads/soup, and home-made cookies and pastries. We ordered a Calif and Reuben paninis to split; honestly I don't know which I liked better-both were so tasty and well seasoned. Everyone enjoyed this lunch! Okay, I am from the south and I can honestly say that the food, the kind staff, and the history which creates a wonderful atmosphere. The corn fritters!!!! The fitters that come with some of the main dishes are heavenly! I always save mine for a dessert. The meals remind me of the delicious, made from scratch dinners my Mammaw made on Sundays after church for the whole family to eat. Palmer is one of the prettiest places in Alaska. I enjoy just seating in a booth by the large windows while eating and looking out and admiring the splendor of the mountains and small town living. It is peaceful and so relaxing. I never have enough room to eat any of the gorgeous looking pies they always seem to have available. They look so delicious! You need to take the time and drive out to Palmer Just to have a delicious meal, a great view of the mountains, and a relaxing time that takes you back to a time in life that wasn't so hectic. Came in around 8pm on Saturday for a quick dessert on our way in town to visit with friends. We were quickly seated and afforded the opportunity to taste-test the fireweed honey ice cream before we committed which I appreciated. Placed our order shortly thereafter and was surprised that it took about 10 minutes to warm the pie and scoop the ice cream. Had it been busy I wouldn't have thought much of it, but our waitress came out three times to assure us it was coming. Stop #5 on the breakfast tour. (See City Diner, Flo's, Bear Mountain, and Bobby's) for the others. I was especially excited because I heard people rave about this place. I heard people say, "stay at the Val Ho and make sure to get the breakfast." Luckily it worked out on a weekend to be in Palmer so we decide to give it a try. Here's the experience and breakdown for the three stars. 1. Dined in the Caboose - this is the back part of the restaurant where there is a bar and TVs within sports on them. Same food. Signs at the entrance said you can go to either location for service. 2. Service - sporty. After waiting about ten minutes in a small space that was less than half full, I wandered up to the bar to ask how we received menus and ordered food. The bartender said, halfheartedly, "I didn't see you over there." 3. Food took quite a long time. I don't time the length between ordering and eating but it felt like at least 30 minutes. I was able to get through two cups of coffee. Our server also apologized for the length of time which confirmed to me that it was longer than normal. 4. Hash browns tasted weird. Can't put my finger on it. They were bland. And they tasted like they had been cooked on a freshly cleaned grill. 5. Otherwise, the food was your typical breakfast quality. The bacon wasn't huge but it was cooked crispy. Good portions for the price. 6. Coffee seemed to have a vanilla taste to it. I thought it was good just black. Creamers are available for the coffee with sugar types. So this wasn't a "blow my mind" type of breakfast. If not for the slow service and the initial confusion, certainly worth four stars. read more

Party of 7, had breakfast there last Saturday morning. It took over an hour and a half for our food to arrive, and our server never even explained or apologized for the delay. Food was fine and I can understand being busy, but nothing is worth that kind of wait for eggs and bacon. Never again! read more

I no longer patronize Valley Hotel Open Cafe after the absolutely awful 2021 Thanksgiving dinner they served to everybody that was expecting their usual Roast Turkey Dinner like we had the previous 3 years. Bottom line, they served bulk Processed White Turkey Meat with no flavor or moisture to be found, no amount of gravy could help. This place is in a good location open 24/7 which is a great plus in Palmer, serves decent food, combined with a wide variety of menu options catering to large dietary restrictions and amazing customer service.! You will get pizzas, sandwiches, omelettes, pancakes, waffles, french toast, etc. You must try the fireweed ice cream..! I have never seen a place offering to try food before ordering it. My husband wasn't sure how the reindeer meat will be since he had never tried it. She offered to try it first before ordering and the sausage was out in 2mins.. We had the opportunity to experience this café and it was a great experience. The wait staff was pleasant; extremely pleasant. The food was delicious with a DD. We really enjoyed this place. I had the Reuben sandwich with fries. The Reuben was so fresh and the side of thousand island dressing topped it off. The fries were hot and almost had a coating on them; they were so good. Are usually do not eat all the fries.My husband had the reindeer skillet and he said it was really delicious. The reindeer was fresh and the eggs were fresh. We really enjoyed ourselves. We also have the corn fritters with the honey butter and they were extremely delicious. We will definitely be back here to try some other things on their extensive menu. read more

Half fills my cup. Us: "How long do you think it will be?" Young waitress: "5 minutes" 10 minutes later, still no food. Eventually, we had to approach a manager regarding the delay. Manager was fine and said she would check into it for us. Our food magically arrived a minute later. Albeit, cold and with a number of incorrect items on the order. A gracious 50% discount was offered on our food. We don't give a damn about 15$ after being treated as if we belong at the back of the bus. One thing I wanted to say was their menu was so intricate and had a lot of information and I really liked it. The food options were amazing and everything was basically available 24/7 Waitress was great The Italian sodas were awesome! Payed credit card by 7:05a.m. I tried to speak to the Manager, but the waitresses said I was being un ruley (not true). I was told to leave the premises, I said "No problem, I had already paid my bill". I walked out. The Police were called on me, when all I wanted was to tell the Manager... that I waited over 40 minutes for breakfast. This was Not About Discounts!!! This was about Waiting For Breakfast Food, For Over 40 minutes... Credit Card Bill Documented 8-28-23 at 7:05 a.m. $ 13.35 Credit Card Purchase. And the Manager seemed overwhelmed and over shot by the waitresses. Mind you, I never caused a disturbance, so wtf. Beautiful Monday morning... warm, mist for rain. I decide to go out for breakfast. So by 5:50 a.m. I am walking out the door with my Rain Resistant Coat, Rain Boots and white/black Umbrella. I left my cell phone at home, because no one calls this early in the morning. I walk the 6 blocks to the 24 Hour Cafe. Sat down, coffee and water was brought to me, right away, and I order 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, patty sausage, please. After a while I seen the waitress and said "Is the food coming?" The waitress came to my table with more coffee and told me "Do not yell, there are people upstairs trying to sleep". I did speak loud, hardly a yell. Then after a long while, I got up to see the Cafe Clock and it is 6:43 a.m. , I sit back down. Food comes, I eat because hungry, I ate for less than 10 minutes. I left my table not too much a mess, to clean-up. As I left, I spoke with the Lady in the next booth, "Did you wait over 30 minutes, for your food?". Then both the brunette waitress, and a blonde hair waitresses appeared. The female patron replied to me, "Yes... but I get "The Late Food Discount". The blonde said "Late Food Discount is at the discression, of the Waitress". I looked at my Receipt, no "Late Food Discount". At the Cash Register When I was giving my signature, I hand wrote a note on the credit card bill of "30 minutes Waiting for Food 2 Customers In Restaurant", the blonde waitress openly tells the brunette waitress "It's okay if you don't get her signature, we will charge her credit card anyway.". THAT IS WHEN I SAID, "I want to talk to your manager." They said "Go to the Front Desk". After paying my Food Bill of $13.35, as I walk to the Front Counter of this Hotel/Cafe, the Manager scurries to go behind the counter, immediately followed by the 2 waitresses. The brunette waitress claims that I threw food at her at a previous date, I say "That is a false accusation!". Then the brunette also said that I threw food into a garbage pail, I said "False, I did not!". (So which story you going with, that I threw food, then picked it up to throw in the garbage? What a rich imagination, because I did not do, either). For the Record I do not, raise my voice, use derogatory language. Nor do I throw food, or drinks, in my 55 years of existence, except maybe as when, I was, a toddler. This was Not About Discounts!!! This was about Waiting For Breakfast Food, For Over 40 minutes... I looked it up in my Journal, it happened 6-18-2023 around 6:40 a.m. I went to the 24 Hour Cafe, ordered a Grilled Cheese Sandwich. The sandwich was pale, cold and soggy. I brought the plate, to the cash register... where the brunette waitress was, I peeled the top bread off and said "This is in no way, a Grilled Cheese sandwich", and promptly left with out paying, as it was not a proper food. I peeled off the top of sandwich to show how un editable it was, and so the waitress could show the Chef, how gross it was. So I did no "throwing the food at a person, and I would not know where the garbage bin was, in the first place." read more

Wife and I had breakfast here for the first time. I had biscuits and gravy. The gravy was from a package and the biscuits were hard to cut and didn't taste homemade either. Wife had eggs with green peppers and onions. The peppers and onions were not cooked and tasted like they added them to the eggs at the end. We were able to get in and seat ourselves right away. The restaurant was busy, but the service was very quick. They are open 24/7 365 days a year. The menu is pretty overwhelming with all the selections, but they have just about anything. I had the grilled chicken breast, mashed potatoes with brown gravy, green beans and "fritters" aka in the South they are hush puppies. The fritters were amazing, they had fresh corn in them and the bread was light and fluffy. My husband had the daily special of pot roast, mashed potatoes, green beans and fritters. I have been going to Valley Hotel for 35 years.. I was very disappointed when I went there for Saint Patty's Day to have their corned beef and cabbage. The Corned Beef was too salty some persons were smaller than others some people got more cabbage than others the potatoes were overdone and the carrots were underdone and floating in water.. read more

I experienced a delicious lunch of Ruben sandwich with thousand island dressing served with fries. As an appetizer I ordered the corn fritters served with honey butter. The fritters were served hot and crispy. I must say they were so tasty that when my sandwich came it was hard to pull myself away. That Ruben was perfect from the toasted rye bread to the piled up corned beef slices. Just the right amount of moisture in the meat not to get the bread soggy. I'd recommend trying this place if you're passing through on your way to Hatcher's Pass like I was. My waitress was very attentive without hovering. Great service and great food. The food at the VHO is always pretty damn good, but the attitudes of the servers is terrible.

Long waits for frozen processed food, canned goods and instant sauces and gravy.$$$ Costly for the quality you get and slow service. But the servers have always been nice ( kind of need to be if you're wanting a tip). And this is definitely a stable and the Valley if you are drunk at anytime in the morning. They are open 24 hours and sell alcohol until 5 in the morning. read more

I hate breakfast. Well, I choose not to eat the traditional eggs & bacon option. So I love LOVE love the Valley Hotel's breakfast options. We stopped last week and I gorged myself on the Corned Beef Hash skillet. Our waitress was super compliant when I requested the green pepper be omitted and the onions be cooked extra hard.
