Enzo Valentino's shop is the best tailor that I've been to - class act & a true gentleman. The place is impeccably decorated & looks like a high end social club. Plus he has lots of new clothing. Importantly, I went there to get pants hemmed properly (the prior place had it too short). Not only was he able to make them the right length, but he was able to remove the prior crease and also hem it seamless on the inside. I had a great experience with the owners earlier this year. I needed a dress tailored for my birthday and a few items that needed adjustments. At first it was hard to get an appointment because it was near the holidays, so I had to wait a few weeks. I last minute got a sequin dress done for my sister wedding. 135 dollars in alterations later the bust is crooked and the sides we just bunched and tucked in rather than reconstructed like we stalked about. I will have to show up to my sisters wedding is a lumpy dress with the left side about a half inch higher peak than the right. Unfortunately I waited last minute thinking I could trust their work. When I called to express my concerns about the dress the response I got was "we usually do perfect work" "there's nothing I can do for you" I will be taking the dress back after the wedding to request a refund for the 135 dollars I spent on alternations as my 300 gown is ruined. read more

Enzo is fantastic. Personable, professional, and, most importantly, an EXCELLENT tailor. I went to Valentino (after reading all of these reviews on Yelp) to have a bridesmaid dress altered, and Enzo patiently put up with what seemed like 8,000 yards of purple chiffon and sequins in order to alter my dress perfectly. In the end, and after listening to Enzo's suggestions, not much needed to be done to it. However, I will say that with the minor tweak that Enzo wound up doing, my dress fit better than any other garment I own. Pricing wasn't out of the park at all- but just so you know ahead of time, it's CASH ONLY. Got that? No plastic. The deli right nearby has an ATM, and there are a couple of banks in the immediate area. The facility itself is a bit dated, but in otherwise good condition and clean- who cares about the decor if they do a fine job, though? I also think there's a parking lot in the rear of the building, but I always park on the street. I will gladly be returning for the next wedding I'm in, and any other tailoring needs that may arise. read more

I have been meaning to write a review for sometime, but each time I sat down to do it, I got pulled in another direction. Sigh.. Anyway, Enzo is fantastic! Awhile back I brought in two pairs of very expensive selvedge jeans to be taken in several inches. When I returned to retrieve them one pair was great, the other not quite as skinny as I had hoped. Now realize this was most likely my fault. I was pretty blase and not paying attention as well as I should have during the fitting. Enzo offered to take them in an additional inch or so with no additional charges. And they came out perfectly! Enzo, and everyone else I have met working here are friendly and helpful. There is a nice selection of men's suits for purchase and Enzo will make made to measure suits. This is my favorite tailor in the area, and I highly recommend him!! They did OK. They have a quick turnaround time and are very nice and accommodating. Unfortunately, they close early. This means, when I had my clothes done I had to rush to pick them up. When I dropped off the clothes, the older gentleman measured me. He didn't ask me any questions about how I like my sleeves or anything else, but I assumed he knew what he was doing, since they got great reviews. After having my measurements taken, I stayed and spoke with the older couple. My grandmother is a seamstress and my great grandfather was a tailor, and I come from an Italian family. After chatting, I realized that Enzo is the son, and he was on his honeymoon. This made me nervous, but it's an old establishment. I thought I'd be OK. That wasn't the case. As I said, I didn't get a chance to try my clothes on when I retrieved them. I live about an hour away from New Haven, where I work. At any rate, they seemed as though they wanted to close. When I tried on the clothes at home, I found that the sleeve lengths were too long. You should be able to see an eighth to a quarter of an inch of shirt peeking from your jacket sleeve. My sleeves rested on the base of my thumb. In addition, I had two pairs of suit pants taken in an inch. Well, whoever did the adjustment--and I'm fairly sure it wasn't a tailor--didn't make sure that the waste seam and the seam stretching from the waste band to the crotch were aligned. The pants looked a hot mess when I wore them. The material pulled weirdly between the side pockets and the back pockets, making a crease of material protrude. I didn't have a chance to bring the suits back. I know I should have, but it's difficult to get there before they close. And, honestly, when you pay $200 to have two suit jackets and a blazer's sleeves hemmed, four pairs of slacks hemmed (not cuffed), and two wastes adjusted, which sounds like a lot of work, but really isn't (they turned it around in 2 days), you expect quality work. I planned to go back, but I wanted my grandma to look at the slacks first. The jackets were fine, but not right, so they're a non-issue. I guess I should have been clear about what I wanted, but a good tailor should know about making the sleeves visible. When my grandma saw the pants, she said they made mistakes sewing the seams I mentioned above. She's a seamstress; she works on dresses, and she said anyone would have seen the problem. My grandma, whose 92, said she'd fix the slacks, which was easier than bringing them back to Valentino's. I think they're nice folks, but they're not going to ask the important questions, and you shouldn't assume they understand conventions.or trends (They told me you're not supposed to cuff plain front pants, which I know you generally don't, but they've started doing it in GQ. I thought I might do a pair, but they convinced me not to. I think they didn't want to do it for some reason.). Maybe Enzo is different, but whoever did my clothes didn't do them correctly. And this maddening because I paid $22 for each task that was done. I've had my pants cuffed at other places that did just as well and they only charged $14 at the most. I know this is long, but I believe this should be helpful. I''m not saying not to use the place. You just have to make sure you're a bold person, ready to give instruction. Honestly, I want someone to ask me those questions about my garments. I want a place that stands behind their work and won't let a customer leave without making sure the work was done to the customer's satisfaction. I'd happily pay the premium for the expected service that comes with it, but I'd just as soon bring my clothes to any dry cleaner for less money. Valentino's didn't prove themselves to me. read more

My wedding gown was in need of alterations, specifically adding a bustle to the the 6 ft. long train and bringing in the bodice that was too large to fit me securely. The bodice was entirely covered in lace and beads that spread down the skirt and along the hem. I was hesitant to bring it to any tailor, so I turned to the Internet for suggestions and found the Valentino Tailors' yelp reviews to give me confidence in bring my gown to their shop. To say I was not disappointed is an understatement to the flawless work they did. I couldn't tell where any alterations were made, yet the bodice fit me like a snug dream. The bustle added to the skirt gathered up the train neatly and perfectly when implemented. I was so impressed that I insisted my husband-to-be and his party rent their suits from Valentino Tailors. They took my advice, and on the day of the wedding each one of them looked like a prince. The suits fitted each of them perfectly. My father is old school. He has suits that are at least 50 years old. He keeps them immaculate. Since he has been getting older he has needed some of the adjusted. I had the good luck of stumbling across Valentino Tailors in late 2011. At the time I getting ready for my wedding in 2012, and looking for a shop that would do a better job altering a tux than the dry cleaners would have. I always wanted to have an excellent go-to tailor, but as a graduate student I'd always assumed that this would simply be out of my price range, or at the very least, inaccessible to me in a town like New Haven. How wrong I was. What started as a visit to alter some pants became an ongoing professional relationship with one of the most attentive and thoughtful businesses in the area. Enzo, a third-generation tailor, practices what many businesses preach - customer service is the bottom line. Not only that, but I found that I could always count on Enzo to be completely on top of contemporary style without being excessively beholden to trends. His first feedback on any alteration or custom job is always something along the lines of, "What matters is if you like it and feel good about it. Do you?" But when I ask him (and I always do), he never fails to offer expert advice as well. We moved away from New Haven in the summer of 2013, but luckily, we have family in the area and will be able to make a few trips back every year. And I will absolutely be bringing my shirts, trousers, blazers, and suits to Enzo for as long as I possibly can. I cannot recommend Valentino Tailors more highly. read more

They have tailored several cocktail dresses to perfection and even squeezed in a last minute Halloween costume. I invest in quality pieces and value their workmanship. I went to this place to get 8 pieces of clothing altered. In the two times that I've been there, there's this funny smell when you get in the shop (like horse dung?). I also wished their fitting rooms had mirrors so trying on clothes would be a faster process. Overall, the most important thing is that the tailor's work was fantastic. They took a bridesmaid dress that I bought online (shame on me) that was 6 inches or more too small and transformed it in less then a week into something that fit me! I called 2 hours before the gig and they were able to get me into a very-lightly-used tux jacket for very-little-money! ($45). And it fit--blocked, pressed and sharp! First let me say, that ultimately the alterations were adequate. However, the tailor had an attitude. He was abrupt and curt (on the phone and in person) and didn't know how to shorten the sleeves on my dress. It was a vintage/bohemian style dress with long sleeves and a small ruffle at the wrist. The tailor said he wasn't sure how long/short the sleeve should be because the dress was a "throwback." I was taken aback by the comment, especially after he'd already been a bit rude. Why didn't I just leave? Honestly, I was embarrassed and didn't know how to react. I loved the dress when I bought it, but after his reaction, I wondered if I was going to embarrass myself by wearing it. It's brand new...from Nordstrom's...and some vintage styles are back in. All in all, I wasn't thrilled with the experience and wouldn't go there again. read more

These beautiful men saved my wedding in 2010! They were so good and gracious with me! A wedding dress nightmare for the ages. I get measured and I'm between two sizes. They order the smaller one, because every bride loses a little bit of weight, right? When it arrived, it did not fit, and I was hysterical. It had a side zipper with a ruched lace waist, a lace back, and was all-in-all a very complicated job, I wasn't sure it could be done. But my boy Enzo was so patient and kind with me. He even added little cap sleeves of lace with some extra fabric from the train being shortened. He worked a miracle and I am forever grateful!! I would also like to add that I wanted Enzo to cut the train off because I thought it would be annoying, but he convinced me I would want it for down the aisle and pictures, and I am SO GLAD I listened to him. Enzo insists on taking his time pinning up each garment every single time to ensure quality and satisfaction. For someone who is discerning about their style and fit, this is your guy. I am a picky bastard about tailoring because there's no use buying nice stuff and then having a dry cleaner "tailor" do a shoddy job with it. And I've had at least a few bad experiences with tailors that were either pushy (did not want to follow my specifications) or just plain shoddy (poor stitch work). Enzo at Valentino's nails it, though. Really, really nails it. Straight up old school Italian-tradition tailoring. I have never had a bad experience there and I have gone almost a dozen times. The one (minor) negative is that it's cash only. But because most work that I've had done is on the tweaking side it's never been a problem. And that tiny negative is outweighed by the really superior work and the excellent price for it. In the D.C. area a typical hem will cost you $20, shirt alterations $30 or more, and usually the tailor will do a poor job. Enzo's prices are better ($15 for hems, $20 for shirt work - slimming the body AND arms, incredible) and his work is serious, holds up. He's also a class act himself, a gentle and soft-spoken and an all-round personable guy. He'll make the effort to learn and remember your name. While some people commented that the place looks in need of fixing up, for me it's got a nice old-world vibe. Things you should know before going in that will be helpful both to you and to him: 1) Know what you want. It's a sign of a great tailor that he lets you take the lead on how you want to look. It's no good to walk in and just say "yeah, I dunno, maybe do [x]." If you push him he'll offer an opinion but a good tailor generally won't want to because he's messing with your clothes, and if you're wishy-washy and it turns out badly it can be complicated or impossible to undo the effects of indecision. Bring a magazine or consult one of his if you're not sure. 2) On hems, ask for measurements of both legs. You will be surprised how many people (maybe you, too), have uneven legs. It will save time later from unnecessary corrections (which he will happily do in the event something isn't quite what you were aiming for). 3) Come prepared with the stuff you need. Bring the shoes you're going to wear with your pants, the bra you're going to wear with the dress, whatever. One of Enzo's virtues is he's really precise, but it's important to have these things so that he can do his job. Enough proselytizing. Love this place, can't recommend it enough. read more

How a good experience turned REALLY bad... I was looking for a tailor to alter my shirts that I got from express. I wanted the slim look. From the help of google I found Valentino Tailors. The young lady at the counter was very nice. The man that put pins and measured was really nice and professional. I was into the place so much that I asked about getting custom made shirts from there. He showed me the cloth book and I was looking forward to get custom made shirts. Like I said nice and professional. He had the young lady write out my order. It came out to $40 for 2 shirts. $20 each. Fair decent price. I accepted and chose to pay later during pickup. which was 7 days from then. Couple days later I receive a call from Valentino Tailors. An older lady told me that the young lady made a mistake and it's gonna be extra money. She said they forgot to charge for shortening the sleeves. And it would be extra money. She said It would be $25 more. They had taken the sleeves apart but had not shorten them yet. I thought $5 extra was too much but I got it done anyways. So now I gotta pay $50 for 2 shirts. Or at least that's what I thought... I go down to the place to pick it up with $60 in my pocket. The young lady at the register tells me it's $90. I thought she was making a mistake and got the pricing wrong so she went and got the older lady that I spoke to over the phone. She also claimed that it's $90. I try to explain about how it was $40 and then on the call I was told $25 each. She explained to me that she meant it would be $25 extra for each shirt. So $40+$50. I told her If I knew it would be that much I would not have gotten it done. And I told her that I was told it would be $50 over the phone. She said "I was very clear over the phone about the prices". In the same moment the owner came. Same person who measured and put pins in my shirts the first time. But this time he wasn't nice or professional. He was very rude and EXTREMELY INSULTING! He said to me, "What are you trying to do?" "You trying to pull something funny?" That's been replaying in my head over and over again ever since i left. "Pull something funny" How do you say that to your customers? That's crazy! Anyway, he went on to say how he doesn't like when people try to pull something funny. And when he said that I cut him off. I said okay. I don't like that either so I'm gonna fix it. I took out $20 from my wallet and placed it on the table for "trying to pull something funny." I told them to keep the shirts or throw them out because I didn't care. I wanted nothing to do with a business that treats there customers like shit. I walked out. Left the shirts and the $20. Never going back again. I do not recommend this business to anyone. read more

Had two suits recently tailored at Valentino's, which I chose mostly based on their Yelp reviews and the New Haven Advocate award. I also considered going to Greg's (much closer) but was deterred by a few lukewarm reviews on the web. To get there from New Haven, you can take the D CT transit bus up Dixwell. However I would recommend driving if you can...... Overall I was very pleased with the work done. Enzo was very helpful and great to work with. The Bad: ------------------------- - Far from New Haven! A pain to get to, and the CT transit bus felt a little unsafe (at one point the cops had to escort a rowdy passenger off). Of course, this is just a personal beef so I didn't factor it into the star rating. - No credit cards accepted for alternations.. so I had to bring $240+ in cash with me. I know they just want to avoid CC fees, but this felt silly. - Pant alterations were uneven the first time (they didn't measure both legs, apparently one is a smidge longer than the other) - Note: this was expensive! I would not hold this against Valentino's, but I think tailoring in general is more expensive than I realized (cost $120 per suit) The Good: ------------------------- - Complicated suit alterations done very well - Really excellent customer service. They were very happy to re-do the pant alterations while I waited.. Just had these guys alter my wedding gown after another tailor did a mediocre-shoddy job with it. I was a bit nervous because my wedding was only a few weeks away when I brought the dress here, but despite being obviously very busy they fit in not one but two fittings with me in a matter of a week and a half, and my dress came out absolutely perfect. They even went above and beyond by specially dyeing some extra lace he used to cover up the buttons on the bustle to match my dress perfectly. I was very happy with not only the quality of their work, but also the customer service I received. Enzo took as much time as was needed to get it right with me before I left the shop at each of my 2 fittings - a stark contrast from the previous experience I had bringing my dress to another tailor, where I was rushed, given no helpful suggestions, and basically made to feel like I was being a nuisance to the person. Enzo has the perfect mix of being able to listen to what you want while also gently making helpful suggestions based on his expertise. I found the pricing to be reasonable and fair, although not cheap. But the place I brought it before was cheap... and I ended up having to have many of the things he did re-done here. Had a bridesmaid dress tailored here. The dress had a fitted/corseted bodice with sheer straps and a sheer back with buttons all the way down, and a long skirt with multiple layers of fabric. They shortened the dress, took in the waist and the bodice, and shortened the straps while maintaining the look and alignment of the back of the dress. I would say this was not a straightforward alteration but it came out exactly as we discussed, and you really can't tell the dress has been altered. The alterations were a bit expensive due to all the work on the bodice, but it would have been pretty reasonable for a less complicated piece of clothing. I'll be bringing them future alterations for sure. read more
