I've used Greg's Tailor Shop several times over the years, for hemming pants and patching damaged clothing. For these services, his prices have been very reasonable, and I've been extremely pleased with the results. (When I needed suit measurements, he said I could just name a price, which was quite generous). At least for all the services I've tried, I recommend him very highly! I made a last minute appointment and Greg could not have been more accommodating. Within minutes he had a tuxedo ready for me with everything included. On record I have been shopping with Greg for about 5 years now. While he may not be perfect he takes amazing levels of pride in follow-up customer support. Bought a number of shirts, vests, and suits here and whenever I needed a resize (that gym life) he would do it very cheaply or for free. To the people complaining about his fees on fixing clothes you bought elsewhere...uh yeah...was he supposed to refit something another merchant made money on for free for you?...and I see most of you are Cali brats anyways.... This man is an artist. I came in to get a couple jeans hemmed and I also had a dress with a tear in the back -- multiple tailors had told me the dress wouldn't be possible to fix invisibly and Greg cautioned the same. When I came to pick it up I couldn't even tell where the tear had been. Greg was excited to share how he had strategically used the pattern to overlay the spot so it was totally invisible -- ingenious! Found this tailor trying to look for a place close to my job to alter a bridesmaid dress! The owner was super nice and accommodating. I had ordered a dress off Azazie and ordered the top a tiny bit too big! When I told him the date of the wedding was in August, he was done in two weeks and it fit me like a glove. He also hemmed the bottom and was reasonably priced. I have another wedding I'm in in October and I will definitely be back here if needed! read more

I've called 5 different times to make an appointment to get a bridesmaids dress hemmed for a wedding in late August. The first time I called in June he said it was too early and wouldn't book me for an appointment and just told me to call back. Then called once a week for the first three weeks of July and they didn't even pick up the phone. I called on 7/24 Monday and asked if I could bring it in this week. He told me that Thursday would work (he literally said there's plenty of time before the wedding and whatever I need he can get it done) but didn't officially book me for an appointment. I called Thursday morning to confirm that I can still bring the dress and he said that it's way too late and they don't have time. He has been stringing me along for 6 weeks and now says he can't do the job that he assured me would be no problem. If he had told me there was an issue early on I could've made an appointment somewhere else. This is so highly unprofessional, I can't believe a business would treat customers like this. I needed a dress altered for a prom (yes, occasionally deranged 23-year-olds go to proms) and was happy to find Greg's right across the street from where I live. The shop is clean and well-ordered, with open space with a big mirrored wall leading to a sort of desk partition in the back, behind which you can see all the clothes awaiting pick-up and alteration hanging neatly in plastic bags. The set-up inspires confidence - your garment will be safe at this garment hotel. The ops are small, and I'm fairly certain I was dealing with Greg himself, a quietly friendly grey-haired man. He asked what I wanted fixed and had me try on the dress in the little mirrorless private dressing room. I pointed out what I needed taken in and he did his thing with safety pins and all that jazz, explaining before I committed the limitations of what he could do given the make of the dress. I came back a few days later and he had it ready to go, ready to wear. He asked if I wanted to try it on again to make sure it was right, but I was lazy and walked out. The job cost $30. It turned out that it wasn't quite perfect, as the hem in the back was shortened to questionable levels with the alteration, and there was a little more slack than I wanted in the lapels (dresses have lapels sometimes, sure), but I have no doubt that he did what he could have, and that if I'd taken it back he would've fixed any nitpicks I voiced. Overall, Greg's isn't an amazing tailor shop, but they do a decent job and are very decent about it. read more

The prices here are absolutely absurd - see other reviews for more proof. I was charged $45 for a 1-inch hem on the sleeves of a $200 suit jacket with non-functional sleeve buttons. You could reasonably have the same thing done by a tailor in New York City for $20-$30, but somehow the owner of this podunk little shop has the audacity to charge $45. Avoid this place. read more

I needed a tuxedo at the last minute. I mean the VERY LAST MINUTE. I was catching a flight for a work event later that night and had totally forgotten that it was a strictly black-tie event. The shop was set to close in about an hour. I rushed in expecting that I would get turned away as I was at other shops. Instead, the tailors were very attentive and calm. They took all of my measurements and made alterations. I was pretty nervous because the shop was set to close. The owner told me to go and have lunch while they got the order ready. They called me to pick up the tux at 2 pm even though the shop had already closed at 1 pm. The tuxedo fit me very well, but I was even more impressed by the professionalism and the willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty on a Saturday for a last-minute request. I can't thank the staff enough for helping me avoid a disaster. read more

Absolutely ridiculous. Avoid this place like the plague. I'll hit the important points: - Shop was locked at 9:45 AM even though the piece of paper (literally) on the door says they open at 9:30AM. I had to come back when they finally opened at 10AM. - Upon entering the shop, Greg's wife told me to wait for 10 minutes before asking what I needed - I asked for simple adjustments on a new blazer (sleeves shortened 1 inch, take in waist) and was quoted $80 price. I've had entire suits tailored for that price - When I politely declined and turned to leave she offered to do just the sleeves for $45. - I expressed I didn't see the point of going to a tailor just to have half the work done and was disappointed they kept me waiting for so long when I specifically went early in the morning to drop it off - Next, the lady launched into a angry rant/lecture about how people are late to work and asked "have you never been late to work?" - I told her I work at the hospital and when I'm late I'm in danger of getting fired - She then became even more fired up and sarcastically called me "perfect" and repeatedly told me I better hope nothing ever goes bad in my life to cause me to be late - I tried to diffuse the situation but she just raised her voice to shout over me and kept telling me to knock on wood so nothing bad happens and I won't have to be late - Greg the tailor himself even stepped in to try to diffuse the situation but the lady just wouldn't stop shouting aggressive threats - I turned and walked out after wasting 20 minutes of my morning and getting screamed at Was a HORRIBLE experience. TERRIBLE. I took several items of clothing here for alternations -- a couple of shirts and a pair of pants -- before finally giving up. Greg does terrible work. Really, really terrible. I had a bad feeling right off the bat, when Greg did a obviously sloppy job pinning up my shirts in the way i wanted them altered. Then, when they were done, of course they fit me badly. He doesn't really seem to care if he makes people's clothes fit badly, and he basically ruined two of my shirts. And charged me for ruining them. I assume he makes most of his money renting crappy tuxedos to high school and college kids, because his work as a tailor is just awful DO NOT take any clothes here for any kind of alternation, except maybe to get a pair of jeans hemmed. read more

After the other customer left (happily, it seemed), he turned to me and courteously took my measurements with a piece of tape. To be honest, options in New Haven are limited. I went there with my boyfriend to rent a tux for a formal event. I was at first worried about the quality of the place after reading some negative reviews. To my surprise, Greg was friendly and very helpful. He took the measurements and made some adjustments to the suit. We picked up the suit and shoes the next day without any problem. This is a great local business. Greg himself helped me get a last-minute suit with tails. He was very on top of calling me when things were ready. I ordered Wednesday, Greg got quick shipping, and I walked out with my tailored suit on Saturday. From researching around, the price was almost half of some local competitors.
