One of my favorite parts of today and absolutely free to roam!…read more Just a wonder botanical garden filled with so much life! I'm from Florida so I don't get to see a lot of the nature that is included here but the grounds were immaculate! Beautiful bridges with stepping stones that appeared they were made out of the mountains. Historical markers to truly show you the love that was put into this park!

We did a family trip up to the mountains for a couple of days and on our way back home, we stopped by the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens because I knew my mother in-law loved flowers and I thought she would enjoy it here. We parked in the parking lot next to the big open field. Unfortunately there was an event that day and we had to pay I think $10 (can't remember the exact amount). I guess it evened out since the garden is free? Anywho, the garden was a short walk from the parking lot. It's named after the former first lady who preferred Vail as their vacation spot and helped the community flourish to what it is today. There's signage throughout the garden to read about Betty Ford, the plants, and wild life. It's a small garden, but there are plants from all over the world and we enjoyed strolling through the various paths. My mother in-law enjoyed it as well, so mission accomplished! If you're in the area and love plants and flowers, it's worth a quick stop, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

THINGS I LEARNED AT THE VISITORS CENTER ...that I would not…read morehave known if I hadn't stopped in! 1. The first three weekends of August are peak season in Leadville starting with Boom Days and then two weekends of foot then bike races. 2. The upper level lounge (meaning liquor!) car booths on the Leadville railroad are well worth the fee and should be booked in advance. 3. The Silver Dollar Saloon is a museum of sorts with Doc Hollidays original piano among other things. 4. The Silver Kings walk/hike is a good route for a relatively easy orientation to the area. 5. The Lake County Link bus between Frisco and Leadville used to cost $5 before COVID but now its free!

This was a great visitor center. My wife can't pass up a visitor's center and over the years we've…read morefound some are really good, some are mediocre and some are really bad. Fortunately, this was one of the really good ones. My wife picked up some travel literature and some tips and recommendations on things to see and do in Leadville. The lady working at the visitor's center was very nice and quite helpful (with the possible exception of her recommendation to visit the Matchless Mine Museum). An interesting side note - my son recognized the visitor's center as one of the places he painted when visiting Leadville with a group of "work campers" from our church in North Olmsted, OH. This work camp adventure was in 1994 or 1995 and it looks like the visitor's center has been repainted since then. He also spotted the cabin next to the First Presbyterian Church of Leadville where they were staying (First Presbyterian was hosting my son's group from John Knox Presbyterian in North Olmsted).
