We had a fantastic Ski-Doo tour yesterday with Beau as our guide. I can't recommend this business enough. We were picked up on time and taken to their location on the mountain to begin our experience. All the employees affiliated with Backcountry Tours were professional and efficient at getting us processed and out on our ski-doos with a thorough safety briefing and general instructions on driving the ski-doo. About a third of the way through our tour we stopped at a yurt for homemade sweet snacks and a warm drink as well as a potty break! What you do get at Vail Backcountry is some of the best and most friendly service ever. Literally every single employee was amazing. Drew (my guide) literally deserves employee of the year. A truly incredible experience I will never forget. I put this experience up there with riding camels at dusk in the Judaean desert in Israel or riding in a glass bottom helicopter over crystal blue waters and swimming sharks and sting ray schools over Bora Bora in French Polynesia. We had an incredible guide named Drew who clearly must love life and his job because he was incredibly kind and pleasant. He was nothing short of helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. The tour comes with all the gear you need. You gear up, take a short safety lesson, and ride out in small groups through back country in Vail. Our snowmobiles were beautiful and brand new. The scenery was breathtaking and it was a truly magical experience. At sunset we took a break in their yurt in the middle of the woods. The yurt has a beautiful old fashion heater, sweet snacks, and hot coffee, tea, and cider. It was like being a in different country. My wife and I did the 3:30pm 2-hour tour on a Friday in which it had been snowing for two days straight. There were avalanche warnings throughout the region which concerned us a bit, but they reassured us the tour was not in an avalanche zone and that the conditions were great for the tour. We were so happy we did the tour as not only was the scenery beautiful, but it was a lot of fun too. This is one of those things that you absolutely must do! After some research, my partner decided to give me this as a pre Valentine's Day gift and we both enjoyed it a lot! They picked us up at our resort and while we picked up other clients, we filled out and signed the typical waiver. Our driver ended up being our tour guide. If you can, make sure you request Greg R! He was witty, friendly, patient, knowledgeable and overall a great guide. You start at their base camp where you get special equipment: special snow boots (remember to go one size higher than you normally wear), and a helmet. Greg then takes you to your snowmobile and goes thru some basic instructions. How the machine works, how to lean in order to help it turn, throttle, hand warmers (yes, they have hand warmers) and a few important hand signals. Once the group was all ready, off we went up the mountain. On one side you have mountain and on the other, you have a cliff with amazing views. Note to self: if you are riding tandem (two per snowmobile, the one in the back feels the bumps more so than the one driving). At one point we reached a big valley where they had built a sort of race track where Greg let us loose. We did several laps around the track. After that, we continued on our tour of the back country. Truly inspiring and beautiful with all the snow. It was a sunny day so that made it even more beautiful. At one point we stopped at this area from where you could see and appreciate all the ski runs in Vail! One of the coolest parts? Snowmobiling in between the trees in spots that were tight enough that you could reach out and touch the tree branches. We went back to the valley where the race track was for lunch. They have built this yurt there where lunch is served. Good food considering you are in the middle of nowhere. Mac and cheese, pulled pork, chicken poblano soup, brownies, lemon bars (the best!!) and chocolate chip cookies. They had coffee, hot chocolate, water and a couple more choices in terms of beverages. After lunch, it was time to head back down to the base. On our way there, you get to experience the views again. Do not miss snowmobiling with vail backcountry tours! My 9 year old son and I had a perfect morning doing the 2 hour snowmobile tour. Nathan, our guide was great and even let my son ride with him up front when I wasn't "fast" enough for him. My friend and I recently took a tour snowmobiling with Vail Backcountry Tours, and it was one of the best experiences of my life! Truly some of the most breathtaking views I have ever seen. We did the two hour tour and it was so perfect, when they say two hours, they actually mean two hours (or even more) of riding time, which is so appreciated since you paid for a two hour tour! They supply any rentals you might need, I showed up in my own gear and switched into theirs because they were so warm and high quality. The staff are truly amazing as well. I was pretty nervous at the start of my tour, and my guide, Nathan, truly took my friend and I under his wing and built up my confidence! Nathan was the best tour guide I could have asked for! He was constantly checking in on the group and also encouraged the group to have so much fun. Towards the end of the tour we stopped at a yurt to warm up, and they had the most delicious snacks and beverages. GET THE INSURANCE. DON'T GET SEPARATED At the beginning you fill out paperwork. you have an option to pay a small fee ($20 -$25 if I remember) in order to cap any future damages at $500. We flipped our snowmobile 3/4 of the way through the ride. We were last in the pack, and were left behind for a somewhat tense 15-20 minutes. They should have someone ride in back so this never happens. We though the snowmobile looked fine, but they said they sell them at the end of each season so they have to be perfect. We ended up paying $500 in damages because there was some melting on the inside of the fiberglass cover. They were nice about it, but not apologetic enough about leaving us behind for so long. We got amazing pictures, but it was a huge bummer to have all that happen. Also, I would say this is pretty intense - much more so than jet skis. If you are easily frightened, or intimidated by large machinery, this is not for you. read more

Great time especially for you first time snowmobiling! We went on the 2-hour tour and it was perfect. Our tour guide, Diego, was awesome and super helpful teaching us how to ride. The views on the tour are breathtaking. There is also time for you to break off and ride around freely in the designated area, my boyfriend had a blast. The yurt we stopped at was so cute and there were bathrooms and yummy snacks! They were also super helpful when there was not any parking in Vail village and they had us follow them to another lot that had free parking. They had plenty of gear for us to borrow, which was a plus when we left a pair of gloves in our car. This is definitely a must while visiting Vail!! read more

I had never snowmobiled before, and I am sooooo glad I went with Vail Valley. Our tour guide, Gregg (two G's please!), was amazing. Before we went out he substituted our inappropriate gear for heavier garments, such as boots and coats. And I am so glad he did because I would have been freezing otherwise. The ride up the mountain was a thrill for me, but one of my friends really struggled, going about 2 miles an hour, and Gregg was so patient with her. We would ride and wait for her to catch up and we rarely let her get out of our sight. He really took care of us. At the top of the mountain there is a flat area where you can ride the snowmobile around a preset loop already flattened by other snowmobiles. You'll also get hot beverages and cookies inside the yurt (a nice hut). My two companions also took part in some hot lasagna. If I lived in a cold weather climate where owning a snowmobile made sense, I would buy one. That's just how much I loved this experience. We did the 2-hour ride, but next time I'll be doing the 3-hour ride. And I'll be doing it with Gregg! read more

I decided to do some snow-mobiliing. These guys were fantastic! Bo (our guide) was fun. He got us suited up, fitted with helmets, educated on how to use the machine, and fully prepared in no time! I was surprised to find out riding a snowmobile is a lot like riding a jet-ski. It would have been good to kick back in the yurt and have a warm beverage at leisure, but we had to make up for the lost time due to some inconsiderate nincompoops. (We unfortunately had to deal with some idiots whose mindless antics endangered themselves and caused us delays. If you must act like a fool, please keep your stupidity in your yard, thank you. Of course, we live among people who are indignant about where fun ends and "fool" begins.) But I had a great time in spite of these self-righteous nincompoops. Getting up in the hills to zoom around on some nice snow (as it was snowing), and through the woods was an experience I'll never forget. And I'll look forward to doing it again. Spent more time w/ machines shut down than riding through the backcountry. After receiving instruction, embarked on very nice 20 minute ride, only to be ushered to a Yurt to warm up and have coffee and cookies...for 20 minutes. Once getting back on the trail, had several stops for pics, which is A-OK, but each one accompanied by extensive downtime to listen to the guide talk about any number of topics. BTW, we originally booked a 3 hour tour, received advance confirmation, only to receive a call the night before that we would only be able to go on a 2 hour tour. The timing of this call ensured we could not switch to another operator. Bad form. read more
