I live in the area, and I play in the area, so for these reasons V Cafe is well located. However, it is NEVER OPEN!!! Many a time we have had cravings for the delicious sandwiches V offers, and we walk there or ride over and alas, they are CLOSED again, even though their hours are posted as 'open'. And don't be sad when you try it again next week and it happens to you once more. So, lesson, do not be scared to try V because the inside, the menu, the people eating and working there look scary. Also, do not excite yourself with the prospect of a sandwich for the realistic chance you walk over there and they are closed -- - and then you are left to contend over the other slim slim prospects of eateries scattered about (There are a fair amount of places scattered about, but if I walked over here for a sandwich, I'm not going to want to pay Sushi Groove South prices. You know what I mean. I guess this is how we discovered Bowzers.) Eh, so not bad, pretty tasty actually. I came here on a windy day while getting my girls car looked at by The Smog Shop (best mechanics in the city btw), we were looking for something to eat anywhere we can find to get out of the crazy wind and this was the only place open. Here's the thing...its a greasy spoon restaurant. the types of places you went with your grandpa when you were a kid or if you were lucky like me, with your grandpa and later in life with your landscaping buds in the wee hours of the morning..this was when white people were humble enough to actually DO manual labor....so yea...its a while ago. I like greasy spoons...the food always has that homey kinda feel to it when you eat it and usually the place is setup with just enough decor that its almost like you are in someones basement or house. V is that kinda place...V is a shithole in the middle of the city that doesn't care about its looks and serves up for the money...a decent greasy meal. Don't come here if you want healthy, don't come here if you can't handle holes in the wall. Come here if you leave DNA lounge or Slims hell even Butter and are dying for a good cheesesteak (not a great one...just a good one) or a FAT ass hamburger that turns the bun pink from all its grease and juice. It was a hearty meal in a shitty little hole. I'd eat here again late at night after a round of drinking with friends. The grease will stop my hangover from coming. read more

Great spot semi hidden but if you frequent Holy Cow or the club right around the corner, you'll be pretty familiar with this place post clubbing/bar. A cafe it is not. When you think cafe, you think coffee, snacks, light foods... but no. This is full blown Philly Cheesesteaks and then some. The place is a little small, but has table seating, and small bar type seating. A few tables, maybe enough to seat like 30 folks, i may be wrong though. Place feels clean. Not dirty. Upkept. Servcie was good, but you have to keep an ear out for your order because sometimes they call it out and you have to pick it up. Its changed a few times. From names, number, to order. Weird. I've tried a few of their cheesesteaks but you can't go wrong with their Philly with everything on it... AND waffle fries. Garlic waffle fries. I wonder if they still have that... but that was realllly good. The footlong is big, and with everything on it, it looks majestic. The cheesesteak does lack a little flavor, but i really can't complain. It's still good. I love to tobasco it up for that extra kick. It's all on a soft steak bread. The place looks nondescript but looks can be deceiving. They are a legitimate sandwich outfit that does cheese steaks and your deli sandwich variety. Large menu to choose from. Everyone seems to know the staff and the staff is very friendly and very generous to someone, like me, who plops down for a long time to get some work done. Very cool about using the bathroom even when all I had was a diet coke. They are also open till 2 AM on weekends for your late-night chow-down. read more

Their not that pricey if you consider the fact that fries are included with the price of their sandwiches. But if you're hungry and in the area, it's worth a stop. Okay, first off, I definitely haven't had much experience with this place to judge their whole menu. But I can say with firm certainty that their popcorn shrimp sucks. It's like 80 % corn dog batter and 20% tiny tiny shrimp --Quite deceptive if you ask me. I'm not a big fan of the imperial rolls/egg rolls either. Maybe I just need to stay away from fried food from this place. I'll probably get the cheese steak the next time I come here. That seems like a hit. On the upside, it's fast, fairly cheap, open late, and near a lot of clubs and bars in Soma---pretty expedient post-dancin' grub if you're in the area. read more

Ok, let me try it. Read some reviews and somebody says their philly cheeseteak "is the bomb" Ordered their cheese steak with everything on it. Here's come the chees steak. The sandwich is pretty big. It's like a footlong, they dont skimp on the meat BUT its lacking flavor. The cheese is like swiss, not enough onions, or peppers but they put pepper flakes (like for the pizza) to give some spice on the sandwich. I think it's kinda bland and I was dissapointed with their philly cheese steak. The staff are nice and they are open till 2 am. I really have to give kudos to this [seemingly family] that keeps this place open next to the bars [Holy Cow and Wishbone]. It's not easy dealing with my friends and the possy of 10 drunkies without kicking us out. Anyways, I got myself a mushroom cheesesteak here for about 10 bucks. It's definitely larger than a footlong. However, I don't know if it's me or what, but I have yet to find a really really cheesesteak sandwich. I loved how they used a baguette instead but the flavoring was not up to par. The peppers weren't spicy [or spicy enough] either and I think they skimped a little on the filling since I feel like I'd just get a mouthful of bread. Their burgers look DELICIOUS and juicy though. I'm only giving 2 stars because their fries and onion rings were amazing... but everything else was a giant fail. In my constant search for a decent American-style lunch spot near work, I tried V Cafe. Prices are a bit steep - paid $8.95 for a bacon cheeseburger with a handful of fries - and the burger was your straight up frozen, not fresh patty. The patty itself tasted like garbage. The bacon was crispy but there was barely any bacon taste - just tasted like Chinese oil as another reviewer mentioned. HOW CAN YOU NOT MAKE BACON TASTE GOOD?!?! :( So, there went the "protein" part of my meal... big sadface. On a plus - their fries were fantastic and managed to travel well, as were their onion rings. My main issue was with the delivery guy. He kept calling my cell phone asking for directions when I had included them in my GrubHub order. I work in a very hard-to-miss building. First time he called, he said he was at our door and when I went outside, he was nowhere to be found. About 15 minutes later, I see a car outside the gate and as I go out to see if it was the guy, he drove off. He called back, I asked if that was him, he said yes... and then another 15 minutes went by before I saw him again. He called me several times during this time but every time I picked up to try and help him, he'd say "Hold on" and then would hang up. So, yeah dealing with their incompetent delivery driver was not fun. I'll stick to Holy Grill for my overpriced burgers - at least theirs taste good. read more

If you're partying in the vastly over-rated part of SoMA near the V, and it's 2 am and you're wasted, then yeah, you will dig this sandwich and te garlic fries will be amazing. Otherwise, it's a wasted trip - usually because they're freaking closed. Ignore the posted hours and whatever the telephone recording tells you, these guys are never open, it seems, if it's not after midnight. How many times have I tried to get a damn sandwich just to walk a few blocks and see the metal gate down? And, the one time I got a cheesesteak sober, it was pretty basic. So, drunk of yer ass on a Saturday night = great, filling grub that won't be talking to you all night like a burrito. My favorite has to be the mushroom and bacon cheesesteak, with garlic fries of course. Their chicken cheesesteak is not bad either. On those days when I'm feeling a little bit guilty, I'll nix the garlic fries and go with a plain turkey burger. It's a wonderful little gem; a heaven-sent gift for late night munchies when you're out in SOMA. Their items may be a little pricey, but the portions are HUGE! Two people could easily share a full-sized cheesesteak. If sharing is caring, then the prices seem pretty reasonable. But by far, the best deals are the house specials. To my surprise I got a large free refillable fountain soda, garlic wedges and a hot juices Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich for under $9. When I returned the plate to be thrown away the owner asked me "what happened, you didn't like it". I told him NO I just couldn't finish all of it man. So, I used UBEREATS to order from here and it was a disaster. Part A - First of all, my original order was cancelled without notifying me. So after it was not delivered by the promised time, I checked the site and it was cancelled. SO, I reordered it cuz, I really like their sandwiches. Part B - When the sandwich gets here, it is a steak sandwich. I wanted the chicken philly cheese sandwich. Sweet, merciful Jesus I love this place. Great steak sandwiches and garlic fries, good chicken sandwiches, but don't bother with the salads. During lunch, I'll have a steak sandwich served any way I can think of and listen to bad yet oddly charming 80's music. The sandwich will be awesome, the fries may or may not be transcendent, and I've never had a salad. They have them on the menu but I'd stay away. I've only seen one person order one and it looked like the lettuce had been there for far too long. They're open for dinner as well but I think the food is better during the day. If you're coming from one of the bars or clubs near by, well, maybe the sandwiches are better at night. I don't know how many times I've eaten here but I'm sure it's stripped years of my life and I think it's worth it. I'm not from Philly and I won't pretend to be a cheese steak expert but this place is tasty. It used to be called Whiz Wit (a call to Philly aficionados out there) but was sold and renamed V Cafe. The chef that made Whiz Wit was brought back, however and bad ass steak sandwiches were once again available to to Mission/SOMA border region. Thank god. My only complaint about V is that the fries are inconsistent. Usually they are waffle-cut, the Cadillac of Frenched fried potato, but sometimes they serve crinkle-cut, kinda freezer-burned fries instead. Also, the garlic fries are sometimes want for garlic. When the fries are right, and you get a steak sandwich and let the grease from the sandwich drip into the pile of potatoes....a better fry you will never have. read more

We were looking for a good late-night place to try in SOMA, and based on the reviews thought we would give this one a try. On the positive side, the cashier was very friendly, and it's true that the sandwiches are large. Unfortunately, this just made me feel worse when my cheese steak was too gross to finish and I threw it away. From the moment it was set down in front of me, the smell seemed a bit off instead of enticing. I then took a bite. I don't think meat is supposed to made a weird noise when you chew it. I don't know if it's the quality of the meat or the way it was prepared, but it was just plain nasty. Being from the East coast, it just made me want Jersey Mike's. I was hungry for a good hamburger and was reluctant about having it delivered. But I went ahead and ordered it via GrubHub. In less than 1/2 hour it was delivered. I don't live that far from where they are located so that helped in that case. I ordered the Avocado Cheese Burger with Olives and it was very fresh and tasty. The french fries were still warm and crispy. Because of the minimum order, I also ordered a caesar salad to have later that day..so I got two meals in on shot. A little pricey when added up but the convenience, great food and prompt service made it worth it. I give it 5 stars for the ease and promptness...would prob. give it 4 for quality of food. read more
