I've never encountered a business with such a rude and unfriendly owner paired with a clueless manager. The owner was dismissive, outright rude, and completely lacking in basic customer service skills. Her behavior was shockingly unprofessional, making the entire experience uncomfortable for no reason. She seemed perpetually angry--even over the simplest things. Just look at how she replies to people on here. I'd NEVER respond talk to anyone like that, especially as a business owner. As for the manager, she is unreliable and impossible to communicate with. Not only does she struggle to convey accurate information, but she also seems oblivious to her incompetence, carrying on like la da di da di. She is absolutely clueless and has no idea, and makes it like YOU are confused, and I have heard from others who have had the same experience. I've never been treated with such confusing and unnecessary disrespect at any establishment. Pricing is a bit ridiculous. Came in for my first time and it's $40 for one spray tan and $89 plus a sign up fee for unlimited tans a month. Unless you're spray tanning almost once a week the price just makes no sense. Other places in the area are less than $70/month for red light therapy and unlimited tanning. Staff were neither friendly nor rude. Just an "eh" experience. Beautiful location but just not worth the price. Would rather tan at home or go to competition than pay $90 a month. read more

I have been coming here for a couple of years to establish my base tan / get ready for vacations/events, etc. and love it. They have the best products to help you get tan faster, different types of tanning beds so you can decide what works best for you, and a super friendly staff. I also want to give them a huge shout-out for making it easy to set up a monthly tanning package AND to stop that package if needed. Most places make you jump through hoops or make you pay for an additional month if you don't give them a nine year advance notice (LOL) but not Utopia. I submitted an online form and got a super polite confirmation via email. Highly recommended Utopia and look forward to my next visit! read more

I am so happy I found Utopia! I love that they are open 7 days a week and they offer perfect hours for my schedule. Pricing for packages is comparable to other salons. The ladies that work the front desk are very friendly and keep me up to date on any upcoming deals. I have not needed to buy lotion, but it seems like they usually have a sale on those. My only experience is with the stand up tanning bed (in the first room). It's awesome! I literally saw color after one tan. 9 min max. I will say the one negative about this salon (as other Yelpers have mentioned) is the fact that they don't take appointments. That is annoying if you are on a tight schedule. Utopia Tanning and Spa is great for mystic tanning in our East Bay Area. They do offer a variety of services from regular tanning beds, facials, skin care and teeth whitening while you tan (who knew??) The staff is great and so very friendly. They try their best to get you in and out fast which I appreciate. They care about your experience and will match the products best for your needs and desires. My favorite is the mystic tanning. Once I told them I was headed to Vegas and I wanted to be extra dark. The solution they used was a few shades darker and I loved it!! Be sure to exfoliate before and lotion up after per the staff instruction. The remodel that has happened to Utopia Tan has been a huge upgrade! Nice new floors, painted walls, rugs....etc have not gone under looked by this yelper! Try them out or again and you will not be disappointed! read more

Came here for a Spray tan using their Versa Spa and had a wonderful experience. The woman in the front was super nice and everything was so clean. I walked in and was able to sign in and get my spray quickly. If you don't have a membership it is a bit pricey considering it's a machine spraying you. I was surprised there wasn't any first time customer promos. If this place wasn't so far for me I would consider a membership. read more

Very poor customer service. If you are looking for a place to tan I would recommend going somewhere else. Unfortunately this place lives up to the poor stereotype tanning salons have of rude, disinterested, and condescending service. I have gladly paid for my membership here every month since 2016. Even though I only go tanning at most 5 times per year it has been easier to keep the membership and makes me happy to support a local business. During the past year with COVID even though I was not comfortable using the services due to health concerns I still understood every small business needed to survive and I was not upset in the least about paying throughout the year even though I could not come in. I didn't attempt to cancel or freeze my membership just figured I would keep paying and hope my small contribution helped keep Utopia in business in some small way. However, today when I called to make an appointment the customer service I received was enough to make me decide I no longer wish to support this business. When I asked to make an appointment I was told I had an outstanding balance. Understandable. Maybe the pricing changed during COVID and I was unaware, maybe there was some other administrative charge. I was happy to figure it out. But then I was told my card was not valid and I had not been paying which was very much not true. I paid as recently as 3/1/2021 with the same card I have had since I first got my membership. I explained that I had my account statements showing I had paid each month and would happily bring them in or email them to show whomever I needed to to resolve any accounting issue. However the person on the phone kept talking over me, not wanting to listen or answer my questions, and then when I finally got a moment to ask my question she just started repeating herself very slowly with a condescending tone like I was a child or too stupid to understand what she was saying. I completely understood what she was saying, but all I was asking was whether I would have to pay the "balance" she was seeing before I could make an appointment today. I figured we could resolve any accounting issues later just wanted to be sure I was prepared for what the charge would be upon arrival. Either way she was not helpful and to be honest talked to me like I was an idiot. I finally just said I would prefer not to make an appointment. She called back a bit later to explain there was an issue with the POS software on her side and there was nothing wrong with my card and she just couldn't see that I had paid even as recently as 3/1 and that there was not a balance. She apologized for the confusion, but at this point I would prefer to go somewhere else. Misunderstandings and issues arise in the course of a day, but it's the way they are handled that speak to the character of a business. I was having a great day and her condescending tone just really made me bummed out and uncomfortable. Used to be a great place to tan. Sad it has changed. read more

After moving away in 2012 I came back to San Ramon, happy to see Utopia was still around, though under new ownership. I checked out other salons in the area and Utopia was the clear winner. Super clean, friendly staff and honestly the best membership price for what you get. In addition, if you sign up for a membership they give you this cute goodie bag! You can put your membership on hold, but cancellation requires two weeks WRITTEN notice to the salon. If you understand that going in, you're good. I'm sure they tell you that upfront but I didn't go through a new membership because they still had my info on file. I would highly recommend Utopia! read more

Seriously the best salon in the area. The staff are so friendly, the beds are AMAZING quality and it's always super clean!! I used to work at a tanning salon a while back so I'm very nit-picky when it comes to cleanliness and how a bed operates. Blew me away how efficient the whole salon is! Great welcoming bag with the membership, tons of awesome accelerator lotions to pick from in the lobby, I even got the "California contour" which is a nifty mask you wear in the bed to give you a contoured look- how cool is that?! They bring in new and fun ideas because they go to the trade shows and listen to their clients! I got an unlimited membership for a few months back in Jan before a vacation in March and was able to build a base the right way and keep a tan with maintenance. I no longer needed the full membership and they were very understanding to that, it was a non issue. Will be back as soon as I'm craving a tan again. Can not recommend enough! Looks like they are doing appointments with the covid stuff happening and seems like they are doing above and beyond to make sure services are given to their members in a safe and efficient way! There isn't enough positive and amazing things I cold say about utopia tanning and spa. The owner is incredibly sweet and helped me through the process. It was my first time getting spray tanned, the facility is clean, the room with the spray machine is spotless and they sanitize between each client. The monthly subscription for unlimited spray tans is so worth it! I'm hooked, I wish I could give them more stars. Will definitely be a life long customer with them. :) read more

After being a loyal customer for 6 years, I can no longer recommend this salon as a result of a recent experience I had there. I purchased a tanning package before the Covid virus hit in March of this year and had quarantined the last 7 months in Southern California. I relocated back to Bay Area the end of September after knowing that salons had opened up again. I was told by the Assistant Manager who answered the phone that I had 6 sessions left and that they would expire on Oct 20. I asked if I could get an extension as I did not think I would be able to use them up that quickly as I have fair skin and just want a little color at a time. I was only able to get in only 3 tans before the manager contacted me to let me know the remaining sessions would not be extended despite the fact that I had no control over the virus. I was really disappointed in the management's handling of this matter, particularly since I had been a customer for years and would continue to be had this not happened. I felt the manager should have honored the extension under the circumstances. I am aware that other salons honored extensions and some through December. Beware of buying any packages from this salon as you may not get to use them all. read more

Writing a review so that others can get my feedback on this business. Pros: Convenient location with lots of parking, clean facility, and wide range of services and options. Cons: Service Reps seem more pre-occupied with signing up new customers as opposed to attending to existing customers. Our situation is my wife and I have purchased a monthly package for 3 out of the last 4 years (COVID was the exception) where we want to build a base layer before going on our summer vacations. Because we buy the same monthly package, we try to go together to save us making individual trips to the business. Since we have purchased the same level tanning bed, we always tell the Service Rep at the counter when we arrive that my wife will go 1st for her desired time interval, but then I will follow her AFTER the tanning bed gets cleaned and is queued up for my time interval. For our last 3 trips to the business, which is generally every 2nd or 3rd day, my wife would go 1st, but even when she is finished, the Service Reps will continue to attend to new customers that have come in between when my wife is actually tanning and while I'm waiting in the reception area. I can understand helping others when I physically can't occupy the bed. But then when my wife finishes, comes out of the room, and then I stand up for her to sit, it's frustrating that we see customer after customer get signed up, knowing that I can't use the bed until it's cleaned and reset. Specifically today, I got frustrated with waiting and asked the Sales Rep if it's their protocol to tend to people who want to sign up at the expense of people who are waiting to use the beds. I said I needed to know because then my wife and I would not purposely show up together as then that takes more time than is necessary. I mean, the whole intent of these businesses is to be able to quickly get in and out and then go about your day. What was shocking was the response from the Service Rep, who basically said that "there's no way for me to know that she is done and that you are waiting". Now mind you, the reception area is no bigger than a 8' x 8' area with literally 3 chairs. When we walked into the location together, we stated that we were both there to use the beds and that I was not waiting for just her. So when my wife's time is done, she literally walked past the front desk that the rep is sitting at as well. Two new customers were signed, so there was clearly time for the Rep, in the middle of those 2 new customers, to scan the room and recall that I needed to be tended to. So in recap, maybe our situation is different than most people, but it appears this won't be the ideal place for us IF we both continue to want to time our tanning experience together. read more

The front desk person was doing too much to push a sale for the lotions. I am aware you are able to get quality and authentic tanning lotions online for much cheaper. She did so much manipulative tactics to get me to purchase a tanning lotion. Already with that I don't feel like the salon is genuine. She said, they're fake online and "fake from china." Yes, that could exist but you don't need to say lies to be pushy. There are so many authentic and quality lotions online. The business owner will most likely try to respond on the side of their employer seeing she respond to all the low ratings. Most people know you can get cheaper tanning lotions that's the same quality on Amazon/online. I hate places who are fake & manipulative when it comes to their sales and can't help their customers make sincere educated decision. Having those type of employees says a lot about the establishment also and their extreme mark ups. Also, for a newbie I would have liked to get some guidance but luckily I have a close friend who used to work at a tanning salon and therefore I am well aware of the manipulative used car salesmen tactics. I went in yesterday for the stand up, and met the loveliest young lady Her name is Kaitlyn and I think she said she was new to Utopia staff. There was only 30 mins left till the store closed but she said it's ok and so I quickly jumped in to the tanning machine. I wish young girls these days could be like her because she was just such a nice young lady. I have been to Utopia to tan a few times and really liked the friendliness of the employees and cleanliness of the booths. I decided to treat myself to a massage treatment today. It was nice, but you hear the employees and music while on the table. Caryn did a great job, but it was different than the other Swedish massages I have had in the past. First things first...I walked into the place and the girl at the desk was on the phone chatting. I had to walk into this place because the place I use to go all the time was not open. There was an strange smells coming from the place, I am not sure it was because the tanning beds or something else. I had waxing services done and the room was so tiny that the poor girl had to go all around the bed to get to the wax table then come back to keep on waxing. The price was a little bit more for the service I paid for, or maybe I was just so spoiled with my regular Spa place. I don't think I would return unless is an emergency. read more

I have nothing bad to say about this place. I went to every tanning place from Pleasanton , Dublin and then San Ramon. They were all around the same price but customer service is what sold me. The girls are all so sweet and knowledgable. You don't feel pressured into anything you don't want and they actually took me around to see the beds and not just a picture. The beds themselves are all great. They change the bulbs so you are always getting a good tan. If the beds are being used a lot they are really hot. The owner is wonderful, and everyone who works there is warm and friendly--- no matter how busy they are. They are the most innovative salon in the area. They have a UV free Red Light Therapy called "Beauty Angel." It's a stand-up bed that has a vibra-plate exercise platform. I was really skeptical about promises that the red light had so many health benefits, ranging from building collagen in your skin and removing wrinkles and age spots and freckles to help with joint pain and overall well-being. All I can say is WOW. In six weeks, my skin looks and FEELS ten years younger, including my hands--age spots and freckles are disappearing. Being a skin care professional I do not condone tanning BUT if you must this is a great little place! Like I said, I don't condone tanning and normally NEVER do it...not only for beauty reasons (no wrinkles for me) but for health reasons too (I'll pass on the melanoma thanks). BUT in preparation for an upcoming bachelorette party in Vegas and wedding I bit the bullet and went tanning. I had called around to a bunch of places in the San Ramon/Dublin/Danville area and this place had the best prices and also the best hours (open until 9 most nights). My first time in was a very busy week night and the poor girl behind the desk was super flustered. While trying to set up my tan package in the computer she was having major issues and was apologizing profusely. Not being in any hurry, and noticing all of the other waiting people I told her not to worry, help these people and we'll fix it. After about 20 min. the package was still wrong and I was charged incorrectly BUT she let me tan for free that night and left a message for her boss (the owner) to call me the next day and fix it. I received a call the next day as promised and the billing error was corrected. Both the girl and the owner were super nice and apologetic about the whole thing which was appreciated on my part. So there was a minor glitch in things, but they more than made up for it with the free tans and super great friendly service while correcting the problem. The girls that work here are super nice and always friendly even when it's busy. I've never had any waxing or facial services here but I'd go to my own salon for that. As far as the tanning services, they have a good selection of beds and pricing plans. I would highly recommend the 'stand up' tanning bed it's definitely the best bang for your buck! read more

I only do the mystic. The staff is very friendly and it's clean. There is a wait for the mystic at times (but not often), so don't go if you're in a hurry. It is not the staff's fault, but the newbies that take forever in the mystic. My only suggestion is thicker shower caps for the mystic. read more
