There are some places that I have been conditioned to dread: the Post Office being very near the top of the list. However, I had a wonderful experience at the 60613 USPS location. It was December 21st and I had a last minute package I needed to send across country. I figured the line at the post office would be out the door. First of all, it wasn't. Second of all, I was able to repack my package in a USPS Priority Mail box ("If it fits, it ships") which saved me $30+). I stood in line for less than 5 minutes and was checked out by a jovial middle-aged gentleman. He chatted with me while he put the appropriate stickers onto my box and got me on my way. I had expected the trip to the post office to take over an hour. I was in and out in 10 minutes...and that was including time that I repacked the box. I don't know if this was a fluke, or if the United States Postal Service is finally making their offices efficient. I can't say enough for how pleasantly surprised I was. read more

I hate writing a negative review about a post office... but this one has caused me a great deal of pain. I wanted to speak to a manager and was told to go stand at window with boxes piled up in front of it. I was getting so angry after dealing with the clowns here that I decided I had enough and left. Then this morning my fiance tells my a nightmare tale about her trying to deal with the people over there. These are simple tasks we're trying to accomplish: Mailing Envelopes... not rocket science here. Apparently the Lakeview (Irving Park/Southport) Post Office is up to its old tricks. For those who have lived in Chicago a long time, you might remember: They became infamous in the 1990s, making national news headlines, for positively ridiculous lapses in service, including, in the most extreme cases, employees taking mail home by the bucketful and dumping it in their own basement because they couldn't (or wouldn't) keep up with the work load. Corner drop-boxes sat stuffed so full the lids wouldn't tilt open for weeks at a time. Social Security checks, bank statements, credit card bills, all sorts of important papers that people were expecting, wound up misdelivered, delayed, or just vaporized. I have now had THREE packages in 12 months go into oblivion, thanks to their incompetence. Each time, I stand in line, speak to a counter clerk who dutifully writes down my name and phone number, promises that someone will get back to me within 24-48 hours with a report..... and NOTHING happens. I suppose it's time to write a letter to the Postmaster General in Washington, D.C. But I'll be sending it FedEx. read more

Let me preface this by saying that if you need to talk to an employee, this is a One Star Facility. I use the automated machine to mail/purchase everything, which is the best thing that happened to this location. I quit going here for an extended period of time at one stage in my life. However, I had to run in one time with a little orange slip and noticed in the far northeast corner their new Automated Do It Yourself Mailing Station & that brought me back . So if you punted on this outfit due to past frustrations, feel free to come back. If there was ever a location that needed the Automated Mail Station (not all of them have these yet), this was the one. & just think, I never need to speak with the loud, bitter, & power-hungry employees again. Are they hired with these attributes making them the perfect fit, or do they just grow into it? There is one nice gentleman I know who is still there. Back in the day when I needed to interact with a human to conduct business here, I would pray he'd be my guy, but now I no longer need any of them. If you have to go here for any reason whatsoever and can't get it done on the Automated Station, I will keep my fingers & toes crossed you get this guy. I looked at the line this morning and to a person everyone looked miserable. I was about to give it a one star due to the bad memories, but I saw a prominent big shot Democrat in there yapping away on her cell phone so I felt like I had a celebrity sighting for the day. She even looked at me as if she knew me, which was kinda cool. Gotta give it a two on that alone. If you absolutely need human interaction, go elsewhere. If you can't, and you end up getting ticked off about something, please don't take it out on the staff. You will lose the battle no matter how right you are. The louder you talk, the more indignant they become, and I kid you not I walk out on a big-time argument between a customer and a postal worker one out of every three trips. I used to stick around to see the conclusion, now it doesn't even phase me. It's like when your mom used to run the vacuum during your favorite TV show or game when you were a kid: You used to yell "Moooooom!!!!" and it didn't phase her. She'd run it longer to spite you. Same outcome every time, and you never won. I remember that story well, so I'm telling you now, don't even bother. I think some people just can't help that they become raging idiots when they step into a post office. I, unfortunately, am one of those idiots. Is my package priority? Urgent? Next day? What's the difference?? I can't figure out what the labels mean and which one should be slapped on my box (don't be dirty people), or if I even need a label. Too many choices! That's why I love this post office. In my half a dozen trips here, not once have I been made to feel like the post office idiot I am by an employee. And sometimes, I should have been. The employees at this USPS are helpful, efficient, and no nonsense. Just like I aspire to be. They always work to find me the cheapest way to ship my goodies and they're nice enough to let me skip line when I have to jump out five times to fix my package. And while I'm waiting in line (there's always a line) the beautiful mural on the wall captivates my attention for a spell. Yay for nice postal workers! read more

The service here is fast and the people are friendly, but their letter carriers must be confused when it comes to delivering packages. Every time I order something from eBay that comes to my business, they send it back because my business name isn't OUTSIDE on the buzzer. It IS inside on my mailbox, however. I asked a man at the customer service window about this once, and he told me that letter carriers get in trouble if they take too long, so they can't be expected to read the names on the mailboxes. It takes three days for a package to get to my building's lobby, but a month and a half to get back to the sender because the letter carriers can't read. So, my eBay purchases take two months to get to me. No wonder UPS is kicking your ass. I don't even send packages by USPS any more. read more

Lakeview has the worst post office (1343 W. Irving Pk) of any that I've been to in Chicago. Three out of the last 4 times I've been there (since the holidays) the self-service machine has been down. The lines generally stretch all the way across the room to the entrance ramp. Usually there's only one clerk. Today was a perfect example of this: walked in, self-service OOO, so I get in line. There are 10 folks in front of me. After 15 mins and only 3 customers served the clerk (who was very polite, BTW) announced she needed to take a bio break. I gave up a that point. I figured at the rate this was going I'd be in line for another 35-40 mins. So, I went to the Ashland branch. Walked right in, 4 clerks on duty, no line-no-waiting. read more

Everyone has praise for a post office, UNTIL, the day they lose your package / letter and they can't do anything about it. There are some very nice people here but as typical of USPS, they are not helpful. I've had two packages and one letter get lost in the mail after dropping it off with them. Even with Priority Mail "tracking" they could find it. The crap I had to go through to get reimbursed was so frustrating that I gave up. Yes, they won. Now I send all packages through UPS where they really have tracking. Raise the stamp to 50 cents, I don't care, but put out a better service! I personally love the post office on Western. read more

I wish I could give this place 0 stars. They don't even deserve one. Every single time I have had to go in, I have received terrible customer service. The worst! This last visit was the final straw. I went in to get money orders and for some reason their machine said my debit card & my boyfriend's debit cards were declined even though I just checked and the funds were available. I understand that this is not necessarily their problem but as soon as it was declined the guy, PAUL, just walked away without saying anything and never returned!!!! Wtf. Didn't even ask if we had other means to obtain the money order. Paul, if you ever read this, be happy that it's nearly impossible to report employees online. This is the closest post office to my house, although I usually go to the uptown one which is nearer my work. However, when I have had to come here, I can always expect an irritating experience. First of all, apparently the definition of self-service is different here than anywhere else in the world. When I go to that little mail-it-yourself station at any other post office, I can expect to, well.... do it myself! At this post office, if you expect to find solace from disgruntled federal employees in the self-service station, think again!!!!!!!!! You'll get about 5 seconds before someone will be standing right beside you, reading the screen over your shoulder, second guessing the decisions you make, and telling you which buttons to push. Can I give zero stars? Over the past 2 years, I have never had a good experience at this post office. Here's my most recent experience... It's time to mail a Christmas package. According to the USPS website, you can pay ..."for postage with your credit card in person or online" because it "is convenient, quick and safe." Here's what I had to go through to use my credit card at this office: 1. Swipe card in machine. 2. Show USPS worker your credit card and drivers license for ID confirmation. 3. Be told to put your ID away and that your card has to have a signature on the back (I haven't signed it because it's new. Sue me.) 4. Get a marker and sign the blank credit card in front of worker. 5. Be asked by the worker for 2 forms of ID. Yeah, she needs the one you just put away. 6. Hand them your driver's license and college ID. 7. Have your college ID denied because it's an out of state college. 8. Fumble through wallet looking for another form of ID. Hand postal worker your insurance card, which has your girlfriend's name on it. 9. Confuse postal worker because there are two female names on said insurance card. 10. Payment is accepted. Grab receipt and get the hell out of there. read more

I feel like it's necessary to leave a good review for the post office since I'm sure no one thinks to leave reviews for something so common as the USPS unless it's a negative review. I had to mail back one of my textbooks today. I wasn't sure what packaging was the best deal or what I could even use to ship something like that (it was a law textbook so it was a pretty hefty book). The lady at the counter helped me choose a package that would fit the book and only cost me a couple dollars. She was also just really sweet and polite to everyone who was there. These people are so stupid. You cannot imagine how frustrating it is to order something expecting to get a few days later and then wait a week after telling them to deliver the damn package for you to get it. It's like they hoard packages out of laziness or something and then file false reports that they delivered or left some sort of notice- when they did not. I cannot emphasize their level of incompetence enough. The workers here are rude, slow, and socially awkward. If you have to ship through them, make sure you keep track of your package. read more

And the reason is....(drum roll please) We have a new mail carrier and she's been learning the route and has been running late on a consistent basis. The staff here are lazy, rude and unhelpfull. The manager told me herself that she could not help me because she was "too busy" and was going on her lunch break. I'm not making this up! There was 1 lady behind the counter to serve over a dozen people waiting in line while 2 other workers openly gossiped behind her and did nothing. I honestly dont know how these postal workers got their jobs to begin with and how they havent been fired for not doing their job. A normal 5-7 min visit took me 20 mins. I'm spoiled by another city's post office that has an area open 24 hrs so that you may use the automated post office thingy and then drop off packages. I was amazed that I couldn't do that here in Chicago. Anyway, I had a delivery confirmation package that I had to pick up. Painless. Then I told the lady I needed to buy two stamps as well. She had to confirm three times that yes, indeed, I only wanted two stamps. Then God forbid she has to break a twenty for my 88-cent transaction. She literally freaked out. So I used my debit card. I went in on a weekday at about noon and it was practically dead. First time in my life that I've walked into a USPS and it wasn't bursting with people. read more

These postal workers are knowledgeable and dedicated. Janet always smiles and offers extra info if I need it. My work brings me to the post office a couple times a week, and the people at the windows are very helpful in finding the lowest priced service for what ever I happen to be shipping. One gentleman very patiently gave me tips on re-packaging an international shipment. He didn't mind weighing it four times (!) until I finally could get the postage down to something I could afford. A few years ago, this review may have been different, but their service has improved by heaps. I advise anyone who can to learn to use the automated shipper (near the exit door.) It is a great time-saver especially because the lines can get really long. read more

The service here is criminal. Packages are frequently marked as delivered and never show up. In the five months I've lived here, over $500 of electronic shipments have disappeared. Letters also don't arrive: my fiancee's social security card failed to arrive after multiple attempts. The post office never knows what happens to them. I work from home and have resorted to waiting by the door on delivery days. The courier doesn't even show up and the package is still marked as delivered that day. I'm honestly so fed up with this post office and I haven't even been serviced by it for a full two weeks. I moved into my condo a little over a week ago and the first package (a small palm sized envelope) I had delivered ENDED UP IN THE GARBAGE... ?? I tracked it and it said "delivered in or at mailbox" and it was not in my mailbox. I searched under papers around the building's mailroom and couldn't find it. I just so happened to peek in a garbage can and what do you know... there was my little envelope thrown out. I blew it off, I was just thankful to have found my package. I thought it could have just been an honest mistake. But now.. I had another package come to my building and I'm having issues with this one as well. I tracked it from the day it was shipped (because now I'm paranoid after what happened to the first one) and the day that it said it was out for delivery, I literally checked the mail every hour or so. As soon as the mailman left, I got the sticky note on my mailbox stating that I had received my package (yay!!) So I get my package from where my building holds it and I was on my way. That's clearly not the problem though. The problem is that when I track this very package that was in fact delivered, the tracking page says that it has not been scanned yet and will be arriving late. If I didn't check my mail all day, I wouldn't even know it had already came! I would keep tracking it and tracking it waiting for it to come and it would have already been there. I'm guessing there is a problem with the mail courier who delivers my mail and not this actual post office itself. But it is very irritating and worrisome because I don't know if I can trust these people to get my packages where they need to go! If I didn't look in the garbage can for my first package that was MIA, it would've been thrown out like trash. Which it was not... I called this post office and they weren't able to give me an exact answer and they said they'd be talking to the courier and see what he knows. I doubt I'll hear back.. read more

This is the WORST post office in Chicago. And that says a LOT. I have had 5 packages from them lost or delayed. When I spoke to the manager there, apparently one of the drivers there will first scan his scheduled deliveries for the day as "delivered", THEN load them on the truck. Within 5 months, they have lost or delayed my packages 6 times! This is unbelievable. What's worse is that the management at this branch KNOWS that they have at least one driver who mishandles packages and reporting deliveries, but they keep him around! Customer service is slow and once you complain, half the time your package will miraculously appear if you threaten to complain to the national or regional branch. Horrible Service. Recently I had a package try to be delivered to me, apparently the mail carriers are lazy because I was home the entire day and the buzzer never rang and it def works. So I went to go pick it up. They tell me they don't know where it is it must be out being redelivered I go home and wait and wait never comes. I go back the next day they tell me they don't know where is. Okay I'm sorry I was under the impression any package can be tracked how do you not know where it is? I go back again the woman says "I need your phone number I'll let you know when I have information and today is June 16th right?" It was JUNE 1ST! so not only did I think you were an idiot before now I really think you are because you don't even know what the date is, let alone where my package is, and she was writing my phone number down on the back of a scrap piece of paper. Wow how unprofessional can you get. Never received a phone call ever! And got the same freaking answer every time that they "didn't know where it was" The package ended up never being returned to sender or delivered to me. I give this rating of course relative to other Post Offices. I really think that of all the post offices I've ever experienced, this is worthy of 5 stars. Yes, occasionally there is a line 5 to 7 people deep, but oftentimes there are only 2-3 people in line. And, sometimes I'm able to walk right up to the counter. I was amazed to go to this post office the day before my taxes were due and not have to wait. I had tried to go to the post office at the strip mall off of Ashland, and that was crazy, probably about 30 people deep. I used to think that some of the staff had poor attitudes. However, I've been pleasantly surprised these past 6 months or so. Belle the manager was great in helping me a resolve an issue with my mail. Shirley delivers our mail, and she is awesome. I have to give a big shout out of praise and appreciation for Pablo. It often happens that I get Pablo for whatever reason, and I have come to really like him. He's thorough and extremely kind. He even jokes around a little. He seems to really care about his job and doing a good job for the customer. I respect him and feel valued by him as a customer...I can't say I've felt valued or cared for as a customer in many of my other post offices in my life. But, Pablo has pride in what he does and rocks his job. THANK YOU, PABLO! Yay for our neighborhood post office! Keep up the great work and kind customer service! read more

Pretty poor experience. First it's horrible trying to get a response from USPS (nothing to do with Lakeview). But a package was not received, my first contact with Lakeview USPS, I explained that I simply thought the (2) packages had been misplaced in a wrong multi-floor mailbox, could the carrier please check. I was assured the packaged was delivered and that the carrier would check. No follow up. Emailed usps again to get a follow up 6 days later, by this time the packages had been gone for 3 weeks. Repeated my same concern, received the same apology/we will check. Exactly a month after first contacting, a person in my building emailed me, "hey I have two packages addressed to you, where should I leave them?" Don't know my carrier, don't know the representatives at Lakeview, but there was clearly no interest in communicating the problem. Cheers! read more

Worst USPS experience ever. Extremely unreliable carriers. Lived in Lakeview for 3 three years. Mail would continually just not be delivered. Packages, important mail, all mail etc. Trying for a second time to actually speak to someone, always at least an hour hold/wait period. Haven't experienced anything but utter indifference on the part of USPS employees. Avoid having this Post office carry your mail at all costs!! read more

I honestly didn't think I would review the post office, but my experience yesterday was so ridiculously bad, I had to say something. I waited in line for almost 15 minutes. But that was ok with me. Seriously! I get it. We live in the city and lines happen. But it was at the 15 minute mark that I realized that nobody was helping customers in the windows. They were either not around or working on other things. When I asked if someone was helping, I was told "yes", and that was it. After another 5-10 minutes, after the line had grown to about 6-7 people, we started asking more questions. After several attempts to find out what was going on, we figured out that the systems were down. But nobody told us. We had to guess.....after standing there for so long. All it took was some communication from the employees about their issues so we, as customers, can decide if we want to stay and wait, or go on with our day and come back at another time. It was very disrespectful of the employees at this location to not communicate the issues they had. I have worked in the customer service industry for about 30 years, and you can always tell when an establishment is poorly run. It starts from the top down. And it is clear to me that the overall attitude in an establishment starts with the management. They need to FIX it! read more
