I was fearing this trip to the DMV as many government offices can be slow but this was a wonderful Friday afternoon surprise.

Yikes, getting here is a lot harder than I thought. I usually go to a DMV closer to home, but had…read moreto come here and I will get to the reason why. But first let me tell you how shady this place appears from the outside. When I think of DMVs I think of run of the mill, boring looking government building. Or in some cases a new modern building. This one, from the outside, looks like a rundown industrial building. It doesn't help that to get to here you have to go down some weirdly designed streets. Maybe that's good for the road tests, but yikes to the rest of us. I came here because I was due to have my license picture updated. But I could have done that elsewhere. In Pennsylvania it is required to have the Real ID fairly soon. Not all DMVs offer the service on site. Most offer the ability to order one and you will get it in the mail in like two weeks time, but there are a few DMV locations out there where you can get the Real ID the day you show up. Altoona just happens to be one of those areas. That would be why I drove all the way here as it is the closest to me. After parking I walked into the building and was greeted at the door. Careful walking in, there are a few steps to go down to be on the main level. Because of the pandemic they greet you as soon as you walk in the door and ask what you are there for. When you tell them, they get you a number and tell you which area to go to. There are waiting areas specific to what you are there for. Of course there is a wait time, just like any other DMV out there. I sat and waiting until my number was called, I think it took close to 45 minutes with all the people in the DMV. I cannot complain about the wait because what is the point. The employees have a right to their breaks. When I did get to the desk I made sure I had all my documentation to make this as easy of a transaction as I could. The guy that helped me was very nice and we talked a bit as he was doing his thing on the computer. He did it pretty swiftly if I might say so. After you make your way through this you are then directed over to the area where they take your picture and print your new ID. This moves very quickly. I wasn't even up from my chair at the first desk and they were calling me already to have my picture taken. After the picture you wait a bit for the print. When the print is done you go and answer a few questions and presto, you have your new ID. The staff were super nice the whole way through here. Even though it did feel like a library in here. I also liked the way they made sure to socially distance everyone.
