We put our new sweatshirts and t-shirts in, nestled the dish among them, put in more clothing and some chargers off to the side and topped off the whole thing w/ our accumulated paper bags, which we can use for recycling newspapers at home. I addressed it, we sealed it and, since we had time, drove to the Camden post office on the assumption that it will be busier tomorrow (Saturday), when it's open only from 9am-noon. We parked in front. Alan carried the box to be mailed while I carried the two boxes to be returned. He directed me to where they were stored and went right to a clerk who was available to help him. After I put the boxes away I joined him at the counter. We had it marked fragile and chose the slowest, cheapest rate since we're in no hurry. It was almost 15 pounds and came to $46 and change. That's about what we were charged for sending the ceramic fish from the gallery in Woods Hole. It would have been more economical if we had taken it ourselves and just put it in one of the large Priority Mail boxes, as well as it had been wrapped. No matter. Maybe we'll remember next time. The clerk who helped us was very personable and again we were in and out quickly.

Chris who is the dump master is so gentle and kind, truly a gentleman. We have been coming here since the 1980s and we have family who dates back 100 years plus. We live on little deer Isle and think it is magnanimous. Please note 8 AM to 4 PM closed Mondays and Thursdays. Recycling is not a thing here on the islands. If you know where recycling occurs please take your recycling home with you. Best to all who know that single used plastic is the scourge of the entire world.

We rented a house on Deer Isle and one of the check out instructions was that we need to take our trash to the transfer station. It was one of the most disgusting places I've ever been to. I grew up in a city that had garbage strikes so smelly trash I can deal with, but this was just horrific. There was a trash compactor that oozed the most vile liquid I've ever smelled, construction material was heaped in a pile at least 30 feet high and they don't recycle anything but returnable items. Really, Deer Isle is great, I don't actually generate a lot of trash, next time I'll bring it home with me.

There's something for everyone. What I'm reviewing is how a spot compares to similar outdoor spots in my personal opinion. Being in nature - and remembering to carry in, carry out - is always five stars! :) Parking? Yes. Loop trail? Yes and no. Well marked signs? Kind of. Element of surprise? No. I feel like the concept of Whaleback Shell Midden's State Historic Site is incredible. But, unfortunately, over time it's perhaps lost it's impressiveness. So, what is a shell midden? It's essentially an enormous pile of discarded shells (primarily oyster) located on the Damariscotta River that were formed, they believe, 1000+ years ago by Indigenous Americans. Originally the Whaleback Midden was more than thirty feet deep (and looked like the back of a whale) -- most of which is gone now since it was used to create chicken feed in the late nineteenth century, or because of erosion from rising sea levels, or because it was simply taken by people (there are lots of signs that kindly ask that you do not do this). As such, there isn't much to see here: there's a nice walk through a field, a lovely walk through a very small but historic apple orchard (the best part when we visited was the earthy smell of summer heat bouncing off the apples), a swinging bench that over looks some of the river, and some really interesting informational boards. But that's about it. Across the river, and completely inaccessible, you can see the Glidden Midden which is the largest mound left in Maine (and, again unfortunately, it's not that big).

They then found a way to still do it even though the text message confirming on my end never went out, so there was a snafu. Packing up was great. The two guys who came were friendly and polite. I noticed them wiping their feet every time they went into the house. I saw what they were doing--packing wise, carrying--and it was respectful of the stuff as well as their own safety (important, you know). This has been during Covid19, and even though most people where we're at dispense with masks, they wore them in the house and whenever they and I were talking, also with social distancing then. Price. OK, by nature we always think "it's too expensive." They were neither the cheapest nor the most expensive of who I checked out. But they were highly recommended by my brother, so I went with them. I then decided to store the stuff at their warehouse. Again, not the cheapest but also not the most expensive. So when all is said and done, fair price in general, and very fair considering how satisfied I am. About my brother's experience. He had exactly the same experience. My move was across several town lines. His moves was across several state lines.
