U.S. Post Office -Varick St location is a main post office where Passport photos can be taken, and many other services are available. The lines are busy at peak times and days but each of the postal workers try hard to help move as fast as they can. The prices with the U.S. postal fees for stamps, and express mail services seem to change frequently. My main reason for visiting is to buy postal stamps to mail off cards. And to check that the cards I purchase have the correct amount with stamps. Mailing off cards, packages, or anything important will not arrive in a timely manner. My mail is always delayed from this post office if sending mail outside the U.S., West Coast, or the South. On a good note, mail arrives on time if it is within the local NYC area, not including NJ. read more

The US Post Office at this location was very convenient for me when I worked in the area of Houston and Varick Street. I could walk there during a break but sometimes I was late returning to the office. It's busy and the line gets long. There's times of day when there only one employee at the window to take care of customers. Now I'm retired so I mail my correspondence in my apartment building. I'm very fortunate to have a mailbox available in my mail room. I do recommend this branch if you live or work nearby. Just be aware to give yourself plenty of wait time and be patient!! read more

The woman behind the Passport processing window has to win the prize for being the most miserable, rude person in the whole toxic office. She exudes an air of hatred and disgust upon meeting. If you think to yourself, she must just be having a bad day so I will be extra kind and patient with her to try to make this whole transaction more pleasant, forget it. She is impervious to kindness. She grabs your papers with utter contempt, barks questions that are hard to understand and in the end, screwed it up by not placing my original birth certificate in the sealed envelope (a requirement with a lost passport) which means I have to return to this mess of a person for another round of misery. I'm sorry for whatever happened to her to make her such a horror to deal with but surely, the USPS can do better. read more

I've had to send two large orders of packages from here. The first time went well. The second time, today, I was either racially profiled or the subject of anti-semitism, it was unclear what her problem was with me. The worker was rude to me, rushed me, and made this process more difficult than it needed to me. I had to call my boss in; she was much kinder to my white boss than she was to me. We had a morning appointment for kids' passports, and the staff were helpful, courteous and knowledgeable (they caught one small error and made a photocopy, as well as found a couple of boxes I hadn't checked). I would leave 0 stars if i could. They are literally incapable of delivering mail or packages. My buzzer is broken with a note on the door with my phone number. I waited home all day only to get an email that they tried and i was not home, when in fact I waited home all day for the package. This has happened more than once. Then the post office told me a usps carrier will not call you in such a situation because "they will not use their personal phones." I have been called by usps carriers before who apparently have some interest in actually doing their jobs It is a travesty. A post office in nyc that wont deliver your packages if your buzzer is broken but you provide another easy way for them to contact you is outrageous. There is also a post office literally across the street from me but that one "doesnt hold packages" - so instead of leaving it their (esp a small box) and leaving the notice that i can pick it up there, I am forced to walk 10 minutes to another post office to pick up my packages. Also, they mismanage redeliveries (ie say they are scheduled but dont send them out) and will leave you on hold for 20 minutes plus if you try to call. And to USPS in general - never use them to deliver anything important. I paid for overnight delivery guaranteed - it did not arrive until two days later and there were no status updates available until it actually arrived. When i went to get my money back with the credit card receipt (showing price paid, date, money-back guaranty), they refused to refund me because I didnt have the second half of the certified mail slip or whatever it was, so " i could go asking for refunds at other post offices." UPDATE!!! Went on Twitter and within 35 minutes my issue was resolved! My package should now be waiting for me at Varick Street Station- fingers crossed! Social Media is an amazing tool! When frustrating automated phone systems and buggy online systems let you down SM can sometimes do wonders! THIS IS FOR ALL USPS- Specifically the Delivery of Packages and the online "customer" experience. When I take the time to go to my local post office and fill out a form requesting ALL packages to be kept at the station until I sign and collect them I should not expect to have UNDELIVERED packages that then go MISSING in their labyrinth of a system. I got text and email alerts about the package- it arrived before I was home from work. I got a text of "No Access" (ie No Delivery) but I did Not receive a "re-delivery" number or notice- paper or digital! When putting in my USPS text given tracking number to their laughable system it no longer recognizes the tracking number. This means I can't request a re-delivery via phone, email or text. The branch is usually closed by the time I come back from work over an hour away. It is now more than 24 hours later after their 1 and only delivery attempt and a 2nd Delivery attempt or notice of attempt was NOT made!? This is basic. You deliver mail! Staff at this location are generally helpful and nice but if the system you work in doesn't care about customer experience what's the point? Usually because they only open 2 of the 5 windows and half the people that step up to the counter haven't even started to put their package together. Contrary to everyone else's reviews, my experiences here really haven't been that terrible. My office is a block away, so I come here to get stamps, mail oversized packages, and recently applied for my passport! Sure, the wait times are a bit ridiculous, but if you budget accordingly, you won't be there for longer than 10-15 minutes. Also, all of the employees who've helped me out were friendly and had good senses of humor. If you go early enough and avoid rush hour (lunch or after 3:00 PM), you'll be fine. read more

They've done it again!!!!! ZERO idea where my package is. It's been "delivered" after a "notice was left". Notice my back side. The delivery address is an OFFICE. There are PEOPLE here ALL DAAAAYYYY. This has been my post office for over 10 years and it has been consistently TERRIBLE for the entirety of that decade. Losing packages left and right, selectively delivering packages, atrocious customer service from top to bottom, just awful in every regard. The best part about this place is the three self service kiosks where you can handle your own business without dealing with a human being. That definitely doesn't guarantee your packages will get where they need to go (believe me), but I think your odds are about the same as waiting in line to deal with a human employee. For the love of all that is holy, use FedEx or UPS if it's at ALL possible. read more

Went here today at 12:20pm to handle an issue with money orders that they would not accept for passport payment because I had crossed out a mistake in the memo area and corrected it. This was the third attempt get this fixed because each time my husband or I went, we were turned away because we were missing this or that. This time we were both present as required (he had paid for the money orders originally and I had written them out), we both had ID's and the original money orders with the receipt attached to it. As soon as we were up next. Ms. Mateo was asking us what we wanted? Before we could answer, she asked if it was passport? If so, we couldn't have it done without an appointment. We explained we needed the money orders to be re-issued due to my mistake and correction, they were deemed unacceptable for payment for our passport application. I don't think I have seen anyone work so hard at putting up roadblocks in order to discourage us (yet again) so she wouldn't have to do work! I don't know if she was having bad day or what, but I could do without her making me jump through hoops to get this done. There were only 2 people besides us in there, not busy at all at this time. Everything was a punishment for making her do work, she complained that I didn't sign my signature right on her form, she made me write it twice to match EXACTLY how I had it in my state non-drivers id. She complained about me not having two photo IDs even though USPS.com says having state ID and non-photo one is acceptable. Whenever asked once for my husband ID but she even dragged some poor sap from the back to make me sign a THIRD time in front of him to confirm it's me and I wrote it very slowly and precise and they finally accepted it. I mean I had my husband and child, there with me, I showed him copy of my naturalization certificate, had state ID, had my bank debit card and gym photo card. It's kinda hard to run a scam with all this evidence of who the hell I am. This behavior was completely unacceptable! I don't mind being thorough but she was just being petty. She finally reissued the money orders so I could attach it to my son's passport application. I never seen such a lack of customer service or willingness to be helpful or just plain do your job! I'd skip this place. My husband works around there and always complains about long lines and unfriendly counter workers. read more

I had to proof call passport customer service right in front of her to verify what documents are valid. Refused to look for, then could not find a list that shows what documents are valid as secondary identity. Peter, who was invasive on our conversation by not only listening but to get close, observe and use his cell phone close to personal documents (Privacy and Identity Risk), not only instigated confrontation between Wendy and I, but also shared his opinion of whether to submit my documents or not. I then asked to speak with a supervisor or a manager. To which Wendy and Peter both said "there is no manager." Another individual (older Asian woman), who was not wearing a name tag (otherwise I compliment her here) tried pulling Peter away to defuse the situation. My best guess is that she noticed that he was not helping but rather creating a bad and overall unproductive environment. During which he yelled out "he's a mother f*** clown." An attendant named Stewart, while nice and amicable, was particularly, horrifically slow and seemed somewhat out of it, in my opinion. I took a photo at a deli a block away from the post office (because the camera at the post office was down... no biggie). I don't know whether it is the threat of imminent closing from an inflated deficit or the inkling that mistreated customers can be as homicidal as postal workers but in the past few months, I've noticed that the service from the counter workers here has gotten friendly and more slightly(this is the post office...we are not talking about Olympian speeds) efficient. Except for the package pick up booth, where I am convinced the workers hide out to watch internet movies, the other workers here now greet you with a smile. Third year I've used the Temporary Mail Forwarding service. Third year my mail has disappeared. I had someone check my mailbox at the old address - crammed with mail. I called this post office. They put me on hold three times. Finally spoke to someone who said that my temporary forward DID go through, but they were simply not forwarding it from their end. Once again. I have heard that this Temporary Forwarding problem with USPS is nationwide. They should be held accountable for holding mail hostage. I really wish that the USPS wasn't suffering as much as it was, but this store is the prime example of the fact that they're doing it to themselves. This place is messy and very poorly lit (just buy some daylight florescent bulbs and everyone will be in a better mood). I had a question about how to complete registered mail and the employee guarding the line snapped at me and shook her head like I was an idiot. I'm asking a question, for crying out loud! It is your job to help me send my mail! I am trying to give your business my money! This same employee also kept selecting random people in the (very long, very slow moving) line and telling them they could complete their mail service at one of the kiosks. Maybe these people were in line because they want to make their transaction with another human, though I'm not sure why anyone would want to work with any of the unsmiling, unhappy people working there. I normally don't write reviews, but I felt like I had to for this place. This post office is the worst post office I have ever been to in my entire life! My sister tried sending me a package and after a week, I assumed it was stolen because I never got a package slip (I know I am complaining about the mailman here as the previous yelper complained, but he is based out of this office). Needless to say, it was sent back. My sister tried sending it again and this time I got a package slip. I was excited to go pick it up. I got to the inquiry window and she said she couldn't find it, come back tomorrow. I came back and of course they had no idea where it was. For a week i called everyday asking about my package but they couldn't tell me where it was. Their only excuse was, "the mailman is old and this happens all the time with his mail." If that is true...why is he still working!?! This place is so disorganized it has no idea where the packages went. I've mostly been here around lunch time, when it admittedly is very busy and kind of slow, but not worse than other post offices in the city. However, I recently went for the first time in the morning, before 9am, and it was great. Very few people. I like that this post office location has the stamp printer so you can avoid the line if you just need to print out some stamps -- although sometimes the self-service kiosk has a line as well. read more
