I came in needing to ship a package and was told they wouldn't print a shipping label for me. The employee directed me somewhere else to get it printed, so I ended up driving around the valley only to find out that the place she sent me to couldn't help me either. After finally getting the label printed and driving all the way back, I was then told that I needed to have the package completely taped and sealed before they would accept it. I asked if I could simply use some tape to close the package, and was told I had to purchase an entire roll. They are all fat and lazy so I guess I shouldn't expect much.

In 1883 the town of Murray, Idaho didn't even exist, but the discovery of gold in the area led to a gold rush. Soon the town burgeoned full of 2,000 adventurous souls who came to stake a claim and get rich. Like many small towns of the era, the discovery of gold gave birth to Murray, and like many of those same small towns the absence of gold led to its virtual demise. By 1898 all that remained of the once booming town was a bunch of empty buildings and a handful of hopeful holdouts. Today, Murray is a stop of for tourists mostly passing through to Montana. But there are tours from Couer' d' Alene that take vans full of curious folks out to see a real live ghost town with fewer than 30 people living within its boundaries! That's Murray. Many original buildings are still standing, and this tiny post office proudly serves the handful of families that still need it. Though it is small, it is mighty and durably constructed to withstand the cold Idaho winters. If you find yourself visiting Boise or Couer' d' Alene, look for tours heading up to Murray. The town of Murray will surprise you with its ghost town look and feel, but the history of the place will captivate you. Murray is north of Wallace in Idaho's Silver Valley. Take exit 43 from Interstate 90 and follow the Couer' d' Alene River about 30 miles.

There are times when there is only one worker and the line is out the door. The parcel bin at the self service is always locked. Now, I realize there are bins at the front where you can drop off your parcels, but that is beside the point. It would take five seconds to unlock the damn parcel bin. I see employees eating in the break room, stuffing their faces with junk food, while one worker is handling the line out the door. I don't care if it's a government run business, the customer service suck's.

It's an eerie feeling-there is no music playing overhead, the ambience is cold and stale and nobody really interacts with one another beyond necessary for transaction. However, the US Post Office isn't in the placemaking business, and that's ok. Their job is to get our mail from one place to another. I was able to get my business taken care of and even received a call back from the postmaster himself with an answer to my question. I appreciate that! Now, if someone could get some Musak playing overhead, the wait in line might be more tolerable.

Most recent hours posted on the door (I usually google it before driving there just to double check) are 10AM - 1230 PM and also 2 - 5 PM Monday through Friday. The lobby is open weekends to mail letters but if you need a tracking number or to purchase something it's work week only. The parking out front is limited but if it's full you can turn right onto centennial parkway at the light and there's a whole street of parking there and then it's just a short walk back to the post office. Reasonable prices comparable to other delivery services.

The guy who runs the place is exceptionally good at customer service. I once came here to try to…read moreship a violin, and he explained exactly how the shipping costs worked and did not pressure me into sending it when I decided the cost wasn't worth it. Then a few days ago, my husband and I walked in after they had closed (we didn't realize it was already after-hours). We just happened to walk up as another customer was leaving. But the guy acknowledged us and let us know that he would help us as soon as he was done with the customer he was helping, and he further let us know that it would be a little while longer than normal because the customer ahead of us was shipping a few international packages. A couple of other people came to the door well after we did, and he let them in to get to their mailboxes and one even had a package to send. This guy knows customer service. He also had his adult son working there helping him out, and explained to us that he had just started, so he was still trying to get familiar with everything. The son was also very nice and did his best to help us out. The guy even gave us a discount on a shipping upgrade on one of the packages for the time we had to wait--even though we came in after closing! We didn't mind the wait, and we certainly appreciated the shipping upgrade. Like I said, this guy KNOWS customer service. Definitely going back to send packages in the future.
