USPS delivered my expensive camera last month. They left the camera outside of my building ( on a super busy street). No doorbell was rung. They left my package outside in plain sight. My package was subsequently stolen less than 30 minutes after delivery. I have footage of it all! Then USPS sends me a delivery confirmation two hours later! Useless. I lost over $200. On the morning of 8/17 I went to JP post office to send a birthday card to New Mexico. I paid over $15 so it would arrive by 2/21, paid for tracking, too. The service in this office is atrocious. Endless wait while employees are chit chatting, the waiting time for about anything exceeds 20 minutes. But that pales compared to the 'service' provided over the phone. The woman who answers is downright rude, talks and yells over you and hangs up! This hapeend just recently when I dared to inquire about the status of a package. The information about this item I received from the USPS website was that it is still in said post office for 6 days without being processed. Avoid unless absolutely necessary. Lines are always long and the place is horribly inefficient. Go to the 24-hour self-serve kiosk if you can. Went there for a passport application and the guy was horribly slow and inefficient. They processed four people in an hour. Took a check (state fee) AND then tried to also charge our debit card for the state AND post office fee. Okay fine, it's over, right? Nope! They called back today saying they'd forgotten to get us to sign the passport application, so it can't be mailed in until we go back and sign it! Other fun examples: -They deliver mail to our street #... but for another street. -Refused to let me have a package because the slip had my wife's name on it instead of mine. I go through the hassle of getting her to pick it up instead. When they get the package, LO AND BEHOLD MY NAME IS ALSO ON IT. -Went to mail a package internationally... they were out of customs forms. Just... out. -Constantly having unofficial lines for things (e.g., passports, package pick up, etc), but with no signage. So you just kind of have to know. Or ask. It depends on the day. Heavens forbid they have a SIGN. Avoid! I recommend the Brookline Village PO instead. read more

Every time I come here there is a huge line. At one point I went to pick up a registered letter and it could not be found. When I asked who I should speak to about reporting the letter missing/stolen I was asked to wait. 20 minutes later, someone appeared with my letter that had been sorted incorrectly. I typically use the automated machine, but sometimes you need to go to an agent and it takes a very long time. read more

Most inefficient post office ever. Even a three person line can result in a thirty minute wait!! There is no sense of urgency on the part of the employees at all. I once stood in line and watched as an employee stocked envelopes as quickly as molassess drips in the winter. The kicker.... there was NO ONE BEHIND THE COUNTER TO SERVICE THE GROWING LINE! Maybe he was concerned about the impending rush for 11x14 envelopes and that fear detracted from his ability to think rationally about the situation. Either way.... Yeah, painfully long lines, crap-tastic service, blah blah same old. I usually use their kiosk or just go to the Brookline Village PO for my delivery needs. BUT...straw on my camel's back: I ordered a package off of Amazon for my BUSINESS. Something I NEED for the Christmas rush in order to fulfill the 20-some orders I have waiting to ship out. I looked at the tracking on Sunday. In Boston. Great! Tracking says it'll be here Tuesday before 8pm. I came home early today to make sure my package had arrived and prepare my orders for shipping out tomorrow. Not yet. Not as of 1pm. Okay. That's fine. I've got the whole afternoon. Before 8pm. I can wait until then. Sat in the living room literally 2 yards from the front door doing various houseworky and computer stuff. Checked the porch at 2pm - nothing. Checked again at 4pm-nothing. Checked again at 6pm - nothing. Checked at 7:30pm - nothing. Got swept up in the making-eating-cleaning-up-dinner and bonding with the partner thing. Checked at 9:40 - nothing. I'm upset at this point, but it *is* snowing pretty heavily and maybe they just didn't have time today and I'll get it tomorrow. So I check the tracking info online again to see where it is in the process. Lo and behold. Much to my surprise, a delivery was apparently attempted at 7pm. Really? Was it *really*, JP PO? Because again, I literally sat 2 yards from the door the entire late afternoon and evening. The only time I was *not* by the door was when I was 15 feet away making dinner in silence so I would be able to hear our very-loud doorbell in case someone came. Not ONCE did someone knock, not ONCE did the doorbell ring, not ONCE did I even hear anyone walk up the creaky, squeaky snow-covered front steps to our porch. Folks, the JP PO LIED to me. It's bad enough that the lines rival the DMV and the blank stares and outright ignoring makes me feel like I'm teaching surly sarcastic teenagers again (no offense to teenagers as a whole - I have loads of nieces, nephews, and their friends, who I adore), but now this. I could have dealt with waiting another day. I would have been irritated, but it woulda been fine. But to read something stating they tried to deliver when I purposefully made sure I would be home in CASE I tried to deliver...and then DIDN'T...I went online to try to reschedule the delivery. Of course I couldn't enter the delivery number because the mythical delivery slip that was purported to have been left was no where to be found. Startin' to wonder - if I can't trust delivery to my home and another poster's got me thinking I can't trust delivery to a PO box...how the hell am I supposed to conduct my business? Which is conducted *through* my home. It's not like I have another address outside of JP that I can use...Sheesh. Yeah the interwebs and the texting and the skyping and the what-not have vastly decreased the utilization of our postal system...but USPS, this kinda behavior isn't doing you *any* favors. read more

I had no problem with the personalities of the staff, but they seem incompetent and slow. There were 3 people behind the counter on a Sat. morning at 8:30. Only one person was in front of me in line. And yet it took 15 minutes to get to the counter. When I did, all I needed to do was have a small packaged weighed, and pay for it. When I handed over the $10 bill, the clerk did not have her cash drawer ready. Then she couldn't find her keys unlock the drawer, and had to search in the back for them. Finally, she came back, set up her cash drawer, then apologized that the only way should could break a ten was to give me $3 in quarters. She forgot to give me my receipt, which I had to ask for. I hate to use this branch. I usually go to the one in Copley during work, but needed to mail something out ASAP. Be forewarned. The 1 star reviews are not just being cranky. read more

I walked off on a transaction without finalizing the sale and the teller STOLE $20 cash back from my debit account. Since I had no proof because I walked away, the woman got away with it. This is one of the worst post offices. When they deliver a package to my house, they don't bother ringing the doorbell. They just leave a slip, saying that they missed me. Of course you missed me! You made NO ATTEMPT to get me my package, preventing me from giving my nieces and nephews any presents this Christmas. read more

Due to my bike braking, I got here too late on a Saturday, right after it closed. They do have this sweet machine that doles out postage though, so I managed to get my 80 letters stamped and sent. When I called folks on Monday, they had received my letter! I thought that the postal service was working some miracles in order to get my mail to folks house in less than 1 business day and went around singing the praises of the JP Post Office for a week. Then 7 days later, 20 of the letters arrived back at my office! I took them back to the post office for an explanation and they just shrugged and said, 'Whoops.' I had been made a fool of! I had just told everyone how wonderful snail mail was--only a few hours behind e-mail--and here they were screwing up my mail. Guess it is time to move into the digital age. read more

Incompetent, lazy and unfriendly. This is hands down the worst post office I've ever had to deal with. Three separate times I have looked online to see that my package is "out for delivery" only to not have it show up that day. This most recent time, I called the office three times to ask them to make sure that my package wasn't still sitting in the office. But she just assured me that the "snow" was slowing down the workers. Guess what, 10 pm that night (Friday night over a long weekend) still no package. Yes, the lines are long, and yes all post offices have long lines, but these lines are slower than they need to be. Yes the people are nice and yes the customers are impatient. Refer to point #1 for reasons why. Niceness should be a given, not an excuse for slow service. The people behind the counter move at glacial speeds. My old post office had one old man serving identically sized lines faster than the two or three working the counter here. And he didn't sacrifice niceness either. My biggest complaint, however, is that I find this post office to be incredibly picky and unforgiving. More than once I've had birthday cards returned for additional postage -- not because of the shape or because of an obvious large lump, but simply for being a bit thicker than normal (you know, those Papyrus cards that have cutouts and sequins). [Addendum:] Once again, I found myself waiting in line. Several people behind me, two behind the counter, one of which was busy with passports business. The one that was actually handling customers had to step away. While waiting there were two women milling about, looking like they had nothing to do. They'd peek out, stand there for a bit, arms crossed, and then wander back behind the wall again. After forcing eye contact with one, she assured me "he'll be back in a minute". "What about you?" I asked, but got no response. When the worker returned and I asked why the two women couldn't be bothered to help he explained, "Oh, they're supervisors." read more

And the lazy fat postman decided to switch my "out for delivery" parcel into a "available for pickup". Like??? I paid for priority mail, and you're going to tell ME that I need to go over THERE to fix your fuckups? I've been sitting at home ALL DAY LONG. After nearly 2 decades of horrendous mail service here in JP and dealing with an incredibly inefficient post office front-desk, I can honestly say, it still hasn't gotten any better... I was surprised to find them on yelp - but I'm not surprised by the poor reviews. Well this time my tracking listed the package as delivered yet I never received it (not uncommon with this postal service) ...so I walked next door and rang the bell. The college kids claimed to not see my package until I insisted that I 'knew' it had been delivered to their address (a lie but a good guess) ...then they 'remembered' that they did get it thankfully, and I was able to retrieve my package. Another "attempted delivery" for a package passed off from UPS to USPS for a coat hook set purchased on Amazon. 3rd time this has happened, and the 3rd time I have requested Amazon stop giving anything to USPS for any of my deliveries ever again. I know that private parcel carriers like UPS or FedEx let post offices deliver packages for them a lot of the time: it reduces their operating costs and cuts down on how much they have to deliver. Driving from ranch to ranch in Montana is less feasible for a private company with far fewer distribution centers than the post office has local branches. And unlike the postal service, they're not federally mandated to deliver mail to the doors of all US citizens. But this is BOSTON, not Montana. "More than 50 percent of what's carried by the postal service is advertisements, and usually unwanted advertisements." The US Postal Service seems to have one leg in necessity and one leg in obsolescence - let's make the leap together. read more

Slow. Slow. Slow. A delivery notice was left on our door on a Monday. We put it out signed and filled in for our carrier on Tuesday. Wednesday, no package. Went by PO. Finally got to "Manager." Said he didn't know where it was since they don't scan a "second time..." (WTF?) Thursday of that week was a holiday. Friday, asked carrier. Said he'd delivered our filled out/signed 1st delivery notice to someone who should have known what they were doing. It was an international package, these are filed differently (our carrier, by the way, is very good and said he would check on it when he got back in). We shall see what Saturday holds... read more

I agree the lines can be ridiculously long, but the staff is amazingly friendly and helpful and they never seem to lose their patience (which can't be said for the customers). I would recommend going during the week (preferably in the morning) in order to avoid having to wait for hours. read more

I've never had such bad experiences with the mail before moving to JP, despite multiple moves, apartment buildings, etc. Every week we get a piece of misdelivered mail. Sometimes it's for our neighbors, but at least twice it's been for someone across town- think 42 Grace Street, when I live at 52 Chase Street. I've had checks that were sent to me go missing. Who knows what other important documents aren't being delivered properly? I guess I'll never know. read more

However, for the third day in a row, this branch has locked its doors to the self-service and PO box area after closing. I love 25 minutes away, so I've been unable to access my PO box mail for the past 3 days. There's no signage indicating why it's locked. Just not open. Poor poor service. read more

SO many nightmarish experiences...too many to list. I don't know if Judith M. is talking about the JP Centre Street branch (she just can't be...it's unfathomable), as I have lived in JP for 20 years and NEVER was in line less than 20 minutes...even with 2 people in front of me. They are the laughing stock of JP, the JP Gazette has written about how bad they are. EVERYONE has a story about some epic offense (maybe we should make a book?) I even have a scan of a letter of mine that went to the country of Jamaica before getting to me (although that could have happened anywhere on the USPS line). I am not anti-big government, but the USPS makes me understand why people are anti-big govt. It is a horribly run organization with zero accountability. JP epitomizes the worst of this. They are constantly understaff and inefficient. I have seen racist actions on the part of their employees (albeit over 5 years ago). They took over a month to forward my mail ONE BLOCK (for real). They delivered an empty box to me (which had been full of memories my recently deceased father had left to me)...oh and the box had been rained on...I have pictures. I was ECSTATIC when they put in the auto-postage machine as I wouldn't have to deal with as-long lines and grumpy postal workers, but they recently updated it so after asking one billion questions, it won't take your credit card. "can't read it". Nice. THis is why I go out to the burbs...guess efficient postal service is only for the rich. read more

Yes the lines are long, but come on! The post office is ALWAYS cheaper than UPS, and the service is way better. I would much rather go down to my local post office to pick up a package than have to drive 40 minutes away to pick up my UPS package because UPS only attempted delivery during the hours of 9 and 5 on weekdays. Because no one has jobs. Ugh. Most of the staff at this post office (with one or two exceptions) are helpful and friendly, and they really do cope with a lot. Give 'em some love! read more

No Post Office deserves 1 star. It's a government business! How many stars would you give the IRS? On second thought, don't answer that. I enter ANY Post Office, expecting to wait. That's the standard. There are lines. There are always lines. The workers take their time. The workers always take their time. And this is universal. Unless they berate you, break your package or refuse to send your letter, I don't see why you'd rate a Post Office anything less than 4 stars. They've got PO boxes, all the shipping and packing supplies one could need, colorful boxes to mail in and a wall of cards and envelopes for any last minute occasions. Did I mention stamps? The workers have all been friendly and professional on all counts. Yes, they're slow. But not so painstakingly slow as to rate them any lower than any other Post Office in the city, or anywhere; and let me tell you, I've been to a lot of Post Offices in the city, okay? That's right. I'm a Post Office whore and now the whole world knows it! (Kenmore, Downtown Crossing, Mass Ave, Clarendon Street and I even do ones outside of Boston, bring it on Baby!). At the end of the day, people who complain about Post Offices are the same ones who complain about EVERYTHING else. C'mon! read more

The guy at the counter was friendly and was able to answer my question about the best/cheapest way to send my passport renewal. A package was labeled unable to deliver incorrectly, Andrew promised to find it and call me after I spoke with him about it. He never called, I went back in and Andrew said he lost my number but would find the package. Again nothing, no follow up, no package but he promised that I would not have to pay again if he could not find the package. The one star is because he did NOT tell the truth once. The box was in such bad shape the sender had to repackage it and pay again and I was told no reimbursement. I would avoid any interactions at this branch with folks unknown to you. While some of the staff is great the lines are so long and the service sporadic so I would suggest going elsewhere. read more

This place needs serious help. It is actually horrifying how inefficient this place is, and I am completely flabbergasted at how incompetent and slow the staff are. I arrived on a Monday morning at 8:45am expecting to wait in line. There was only one clerk working, but there was only one person being helped ahead of me, so I was excited that it wouldn't take too long (yay!). That excitement was short-lived. The customer who was being helped had an issue that needed to be dealt with by a manager. However, instead of calling a manager for help, the clerk walked back and forth to the manager's office several times to ask questions while the rest of us waited, and waited, and waited. The clerk displayed no sense of urgency - even stopping to get herself a cup of coffee/water in between trips to the manager's office. I'm all for getting your steps in and staying alert/hydrated, but when there are 8 people in line, showing some semblance of urgency should be a workplace expectation. Additionally, if there are 8 people in line, the manager should come out to help alleviate work from the clerk and assist waiting, PAYING customers. In total I waited for 25 minutes before being helped when I was NEXT IN LINE. What a mess. Save yourself the hassle and go anywhere else to mail a package. read more
