It's small. The food is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE and the bartender didn't even MIX the drinks. OMG what a s$&* show!!! I am SHOCKED that they would be a venue where weddings happen. The black walls made it seem dark and small. I'm not sure WHAT our PTO saw in this space but I did not have the same vision. Location is the only good thing going for it. Location location location. But we had a 90's GALA there, and y'all this place was stuck in the 90's everywhere from the decor to the uniformed staff. It was small. We had less than 100 people and it seemed busy so I don't know how they accommodate more than that. I also don't know where the photos came from online because it did NOT look anything like that. Okay so that's looks...taste. AWFUL!!! We were told we would receive a "plated" vegan meal. What we got was a "buffet..." "Wood fired vegetable medley" which was ICE COLD squash, zucchini, onions and red bell pepper. It wasn't even cooked. It was crunchy. NOT good. And our vegan "main" was unseasoned acorn squash covered in quinoa. Nothing had flavor. Our friend's had the chicken and mashed potatoes and said it was terrible. I figured that at the very least they couldn't screw up basic cocktails. WRONG. I ordered an Old Fashioned and she put all the ingredients into a glass, added ice and an orange wedge and handed it to me. O....kayyyyyyy... Could be a really great venue. But this place has a serious safety problem. The lighting is insufficient on floor near the stairs areas. Girls are teetering around on 5 and 6 inch heels, I damn near fell on the First Thursday party last month even though I was clinging to a hand rail and NO, I was NOT drunk yet. Halloween Party, same deal, crap-ass lighting, however, I was familiar with the floor plan this time so I was just super careful and no issues for me. But seriously, the lighting sucks. Do something! Fix that lighting issue and everything is damn near perfect. The bar is cool, it is a horseshoe and is accessible from most areas. The dance floor is huge. It would be nice if there was just a little more seating available. Great party venue except for the lighting safety hazard. Just be careful around the stairs in the dark... don't get too drunk or you will fall down. read more

We had planned to get married at Urban Studio. We began to work with their team a year before our wedding and signed our contract. During the planning phase communication completely dropped off. We had questions regarding the proposal and wanted to iron out those issues. However, we went months without any communication from their team during the summer leading up to our wedding. When we finally asked to speak with the owner, we were told the owner didn't want to speak with us and we would be sued for breach of contract - for trying to speak with the individual over the phone? We were baffled by their unprofessionalism, and we were already angered by the shear lack of response to our conservative amount of e-mails. We cancelled our contract and received a refund on our deposit roughly 9 months after signing the initial contract. read more

After coming to Urban Studio many many times I'm always baffled as how to review this place. Urban Studio is an event space. As an event space I'd have to say it's great. Great location in the heart of the Pearl District right off the streetcar line. The layout is wonderful and it allows for dancing, dining and showcases to be done here (was at an event that they had cars in the venue). I've seen people in the space for weddings, but mostly it seems to be used for large dance/DJ parties. Anyone walking by can look into the space.....so keep that in mind. But.....if I ever decide to throw a kicking party for 400 of my BFF's this will be the place I do it. read more

Pros: In the Pearl district, very neat space with lots of decorating potential and built in bar Cons: Hosting both ceremony and reception while possible is tricky, expect an hour in the lobby while the space is flipped, if you have over 100 guests I think you'd feel so cramped, windows expose you to the street (no privacy) This space is definitely tiny. I recommend seeing it in person before signing any contracts even if they pressure you to sign because someone else wants your date. Or at least walk by to get a glimpse of the space. I tried so many times to make an appointment to see the space but they are really busy. Once we saw the space we realized it wasn't possible for our 125 person wedding unless we wanted to be super cramped. No longer going with venue. Another thing to note is once the contract is signed Natalia is no longer a point of contact and all questions had to be directed to Ashley with Pearl catering who manages their space. I was beyond frustrated at their lack of teamwork, instead of being able to ask either person I was constantly being redirected back and forth. I also was told flipping the space from ceremony to reception would take only half n hour but it can be upwards of hour. Your guests would wait in the reception area which is really just a lobby and isn't that large. I cannot fathom how 130 guests could fit and they can if they are sardines. I'm sure this space is really lovely for a wedding but make sure your guest count is small or go else where. Also be prepared to only communicate on email, it was hard to reach anyone by phone. Maybe just walk by the space before you even think of booking to get a feel for it. read more

Great venue space right smack in the middle of the Pearl District. I've used this space for my High School Reunion, Work Parties, and have attended a few other events here as well. Ex. First Thursday. Urban Studio is outfitted with modern and simple decor and a bar area right in the middle. Plenty of space to house tables, high boys, dance floor, food/buffets, or anything your heart desires. They do provide or have available quite a bit when you rent the space. We recently were married at Urban Studio and it was for sure the best day of our lives. To be completely honest we were not looking for an indoor venue. As we searched the Portland area finding the place of our dreams might have meant waiting well over two years! Some of the outdoor venues we visited had strange OLCC laws prohibiting specific cocktails or a limited amount of time served. It felt like a headache but this all led us to Urban Studio. As soon as we met with Katie we were sold. She made us excited and relaxed as she assured us that there is really nothing we can't do with the space. She passed on excellent recommended vendors that worked perfectly with them in creating the wedding of our dreams. The food was to die for, the bar staff was amazing. Everyone was so kind and happy to assist in anyway possible. That is saying a whole lot because my mother is particular like there's no tomorrow. My guests told me the bar staff were laughing, dancing, and always smiling. As we were leaving one of the caterers gave the Groom and me boxes of food! They were marked "his" and "hers" and we chowed down in our Uber just gawking at how delicious it was. It was such a kind sentiment and the best way I can describe the hospitality and professionalism of this company. We hadn't had but a few bites to eat through the night and they anticipated that and sent us home happy as clams. We love Urban Studio, it was such a memorable place to get married. I can't say enough great things about this venue. We had an event there and they were great from start to finish. The day of the staff was impeccable. Even Amy, the rep we worked with, came to our event and made sure things went smoothly. The space is beautiful, clean and so flexible for any event. We had a youth rally so we had a stage brought in and the students stood or sat on the couches and floors. We barely had to bring anything additional in from the outside beside our sound system for the large band and two stage lights. Urban Studio has a lot of fun light features available too like a disco ball! Even though we had an unexpected incident outside, I am thankful that Urban Studio and staff took it in stride. They are forgetting that the Pearl district is a densely populated area with people who have been living there way before they arrived. Loud music blasting until 2 AM that can be easily heard in neighboring buildings is unacceptable. They have been cited multiple times for noise violations without any change in their behavior. Urban Studio is a new event space in the Pearl that's dying to have some amazing parties thrown in it. Managed by the Urban Restaurants group, this 400-person capacity raw space boasts a somewhat sprawling multi-level area perfect for hosting anything from a gallery event to rockin' soiree. I checked out this space at a First Thursday promo event the other night and was impressed by the layout. The lower concrete-floored area is basically a blank canvas - a rectangular room deep enough for a band/DJ/dance floor. There are modular rolling walls that can be positioned in any configuration to break up or control the flow in the room, and this is supported by numerous modern couches that can also be positioned to allow for seating/lounging areas. The space is bisected by a bar island with mezzanine up top. The bar is ready to rock with multiple wells and taps, and the shape allows for a generous amount of counter access. The upper portion (about 3 steps raised) on the corner of the building is about 1/2 the size of the larger, lower area, and again sports modular walls for self-styled arrangement. Overall, it's a great-looking space that could be used for anything from gallery showings to seated dinners to... well... whatever. I witnessed both a higher-brow gallerista soiree and a raucous rock concert all in the same night, so the versatility of the space was obvious. Also, as a bonus, the management is linked to a catering company as well as some local restaurants, so that makes it easier to package up the space for a full-service event. It's not the most beautiful, ornate, classic, vintage space in Portland, by any means. It's raw, stark, and utilitarian, but the definite upside is that you can make the space into what you want to. 4.5 solid stars for the versatility and potential of this place. Had my wedding at Urban Studio (both the ceremony and reception), and it was AMAZING. The space is obviously gorgeous, and working with Via was great. It was a pretty low-key wedding--no fancy bridezilla nonsense--just simple, elegant decoration that looked great in the relatively blank space. Honestly, simple lighting contrasted against the darkness outside was just beautiful. We had 130 people including the wedding party, and I think that was the exact right amount for the space--any bigger and it would have seemed a little crowded. As it was, there was plenty of space on the dance floor and in the front room for mingling. The food, ordered through Pearl Catering, was amazing. We didn't do a full sit-down dinner, just heavy hors d'oeuvres, and it was very good. The mashed potato bar was a huge hit with our guests! Worth the extra cost. The location is perfect, right in the Pearl District, but close enough to downtown that our out-of-town guests had non problem walking to and from it. [UPDATE: I had listed two small gripes on this review previously--the cocktail served during cocktail hour was really bad, and the venue seemed a little short staffed. Via, the site manager from Urban Studio, contacted me after seeing my review, and she was very apologetic, offering to refund us for the cocktails and investigating the staffing issue. So in addition to all the other great things, I can add great customer service and commitment to making sure people are happy--even after the event is over!] My small gripes pale in comparison to all the good stuff. OMG I can't possibly say enough nice things about Pearl Catering. They catered our wedding and no one was disappointed. Every single person we've talked to said the food was amazing, and it was. Katie was super friendly and responsive and professional. We felt very safe in her hands. She practically acted as a wedding coordinator for us, and everything got done when and how it was supposed to happen. They arranged a great tasting for us so we could our choices wisely, and were very flexible to our changing needs. We chose to have our wedding here. We liked that the venue is sophisticated but also very versatile and we love the location. Working with Aurelia was an absolute pleasure. She was easy to contact and she answered all of our questions. Everyone at the wedding loved the food. Many said it was the best food they have had at a wedding. The staff that day was awesome...they were helpful, friendly and efficient. I didn't see anyone being rude or unfriendly. Everyone was all smiles. I loved being able to escape to the loft above the bar. I loved the couches. I loved the people walking by and looking in at our fun party. I'm sitting here at my lap top, almost a week to the day after my wedding and cannot find the words to express how amazing it was. Kelly, John and their team worked their a$$e$ off for me and my fiance to help make out day amazing. And it truly was! My fiance and I were planning the event long distance from NYC. Kelly was really awesome at always returning my emails, not matter how many in a row I sent over. She worked with me on timing, adding and deleting things from my contract and giving me solid advice. It was definitely difficult planning from so far away and not even meeting the team that was making my day so special until that day was basically over but I had complete confidence that they knew their shit. And they totally did. The day of staff were all so nice and professional. The venue looked really lovely and the turn over of the ballroom from our ceremony to reception happened so quickly I barely noticed it happened at all!! The food was awesome, even my 86 year old grandmother thought so and she's literally the most difficult person to impress after owning her own restaurant in Europe for many years. She will not stop talking about it! The staff also sent my husband and I home with 3 stuffed to go boxes with food, which I was not expecting. They helped me serve my own dessert, helped clear up and set up. I am just so happy with Urban Studio. I would recommend to anyone! read more

We hung out here last night at the Yelp event, and I have to say I would totally rent this space for an event. It had a nice wide open gallery feel, with movable walls perfect for art displays. The music sound quality was excellent, and the different areas within the larger space worked well together. All the concrete and white couches give it the urban feel typical of the Pearl District. I don't know if you can control the lighting levels, but if so you could probably create just about any mood you wanted to for your event. Per Don's review, if this space was dying to have some parties thrown in it--they threw a heck of a good one there last night. I will definitely keep Urban Studio in mind when planning future parties and events. Since it is right downtown in the Pearl, it is super easy to find. The only downside of the Pearl (if you drive), is finding parking. read more

If you are planning an event, you must have it at Urban Studio!!! We had our wedding reception here and it was by far the best venue I have ever come across. Not only did they do a fantastic job organizing every single detail, but they walked through each item of the event so we knew exactly what we were paying for and how the event would be set up. The staff was amazing and the coordinator Annette was by far the most amazing person to work with. She made my day feel as special as if it was her day! Jason helped the day of and even in the middle of a snowstorm made it the most memorable day ever. The event is so classy and beautiful inside. The lighting, furniture, and set up made for enough space for talking, dancing, and eating, in addition to beautiful photos! The catering by Pearl Catering was off the charts good. We had a lot of crazy foodies at the reception that would not stop talking about how incredible the food was. It came out hot, on time, and delicious. The presentation alone was to die for. The bartenders and servers went over and beyond to make sure everyone was taken care of, even if it wasn't there exact job. Pearl Catering was everything we could have asked for, and Katie was fantastic to work with! They catered for our wedding in June 2018. They were responsive, eager to meet our vision, and proactive in ensuring all the details were seen to. And most importantly, their food is delicious! I, and most of my family, are vegetarians, whereas my husband and most of our other guests prefer a meat option. Pearl Catering was able to create a menu that provided delightful options for everyone. We also had a guest with severe allergies to a number of different ingredients. Pearl Catering created a custom entree for him that he said was one of the best things he had eaten all year. I was also blown away by their attention to detail. Amid all the commotion of the wedding day, they had the presence of mind to serve the kids first, for which we received rave reviews from every exhausted parent in attendance. And they easily handled several last-minute requests on our part to serve certain guests first as they had to leave early. This review is specifically for Pearl Catering. We hired them for our wedding this last August, and our expectations were more than exceeded! When we had our tasting, we couldn't stop talking about the food, so we booked Pearl right away! One thing both my husband and I have noticed with other weddings is that the food is good at the tasting (according to the couples) and not great at the actual wedding. Pearl was incredible at our wedding!! We had multiple guests, including a very picky grandmother, tell us how wonderful the food was. The servers were also incredibly attentive, and friendly! We recently had our wedding here in June. The pros: It's beautiful and newly renovated. It lives up to its name and location. Truly an urban feel in the perfect Pearl District location. The food with Pearl Catering was incredible. We still have guests to this day complimenting the food and saying it was the best wedding food they've ever tasted. They worked closely with us during our tasting to make sure the menu was perfect and took note of dietary restriction (bride is vegetarian, guests had lactose and nut allergies). Set up and decorations were lovely. The venue coordinator Nicole has extensive knowledge and experience. She was willing to give great pointers and advice, and helped run our rehearsal. She tries to make things as easy as possible and got back to us as quickly as she could on correspondence. The cons: It is unbelievable that a venue of this popularity has only one event coordinator. It seems as if there should be a team of people, especially focusing on weddings. A rehearsal date would not be set until 6 weeks prior to the wedding date, written into their contract and owner enforced. This makes it extremely stressful and difficult to book a rehearsal dinner venue or coordinate travel dates for out of town guests in the family/wedding party. The day of the wedding, the serving staff was a bit of a letdown. They dropped an entire layer of the cake when cutting it. They lost our cake stand that was rented from the dessert company and took a week to get it back. We provided boxes to take home leftover food and cake but the staff threw away all of our cake (2 layers and including the topper) and we never received our empty boxes back. We were told we would get an apology gift but never arrived. The bartender though was very nice and did a great job at handling our guests. Went out of his way to make us (bride and groom) feel special. They also changed their contract this year to adding an 18% service charge on your food and beverage total for the serving staff. This does not include gratuity. Overall, the venue was beautiful and suited our 85 guests perfectly. Great location. read more

I'm not sure how other events are handled since I have never been to one but here is the breakdown of our wedding! Staff: Cant' thank them enough. Went above and beyond the call of duty. Extra up lighting was added without charge to complete the look of our ceremony/reception site. This was done by the manager on duty that night. It really did make the room look better! There was also a coat rack that was provided (unbeknownst to me until the end of the night) for the guests as they came in- another thoughtful touch. A bridesmaid had requested some OJ & glasses. No questions asked and carafe of OJ was provided on request along with champagne glasses for a pre-ceremony toast. Staff was always present (but I never felt as if I was always seeing them- a welcomed ghost staff) and accommodating and following right on schedule. Via our point of contact while planning our wedding was always beyond helpful. She was able to put in a few changes for us with the menu (kuddos to the chef for letting us change them!), showing us endless examples of previous weddings, adding requested beverages (also thanks to Urban Studio for providing additional brands of alcohol) and getting all of our questions answered. Food: Amazing! I was the first plate to be served (buffet style) and the last person to actually sit down and eat! My plate was still pipping hot by the time (about 10 min from plating to eating) I was able to dig in! Something that was very important to us was hot food! People still rave about the food- mostly the chicken (we had the champagne chicken with a requested no mushrooms). We also had the braised beef tips and changed the sauce to the pepper cognac sauce. Very delicious but slightly dry- I imagine any beef would be hard to keep juicy in a buffet style. Spinach and strawberry salad-yum! White cheddar and Gruyere Au gratin potatoes with Parmesan-yum! and Orzo pasta with basil pesto and hazelnuts- Yum!! All very good choices! We had passed hor dourves but I never had a chance to eat them. I hear they were very tasty as well. Balloon drop: Yes we had one!! It was a little hard to time the way we imagined but it was so amazing and so much fun for the guests! Would defiantly recommend Urban Studio!!! Do not use Urban Studios for your event. The Event Coordinator (Via) is very difficult to communicate with and tends to withhold valuable information. Event space is dirty and bathrooms smell. Most of the event staff is unfriendly and lazy. Management took 2.5 weeks to responds to complaints and didn't take any ownership. It is a shame that such a nice space in a central location is run so poorly. read more

The majority of our guests were from out of town so we wanted to choose a venue that was easy to get to from wherever people chose to stay while in Portland. Urban Studio is a great location that made it convenient for all of our guests. Aurelia and John were both very friendly, accomodating, and very clear as to what we should expect, which was extremely welcome. It made our lives much easier knowing that the food, drinks, servers, and bartenders were all taken care of. The space lends itself well to being transformed into whatever you want. It was definitely one of the most reasonably priced venues we took a look at. The drinks were good, the bartenders were very friendly and accomodating. The food was a hit, the service was great, and we will definitely be checking out the sister restaurants at some point. read more

Pearl catered our wedding this past June, and the experience was absolutely first-rate. The food we were served at our initial tasting was delicious -- not serviceable... delicious -- and as my wife and I had stipulated from the very beginning that food quality was going to be one of our highest priorities for the wedding, we knew to go with them before we had even finished the meal. Quite rationally, though, I think, we still had reservations about the quality being upheld as production of the menu got scaled up from two diners to 125. Well, take my word for it: the food served on the big day tasted exactly the same as it had during the tasting -- maybe even better -- which is about the most compelling possible proof that these folks know what they're doing. About ten different people told me over the course of the night (and even during the next few weeks) that it was the best wedding food that they had ever eaten. My mother was among these voices, and she's been to more than a few. Spectacular though it was, the food itself wasn't the whole story. Pearl bent over backwards to accommodate all our guests with food allergies and (in some cases very particular) dietary restrictions, and they never forgot a single detail or made a single mistake, right up until the day itself when they trotted out the beautiful and crystal-clear signage they had made for every dish (including the cakes and cocktails, which they didn't even make). What's more, Katie, our primary contact, was an exceptional communicator, always remembering every last detail about every last thing, never being stingy with her time, never being even one minute late in person or on the phone, and consistently being the picture of kindness. We felt like we had a true partner in her; her actions demonstrated, again and again, that our guests' pleasure was every bit as important to her as it was to us. We had my daughters wedding in July. The venue was great and the food was great so I would give it a 4 stars for both. The event coordinator Kelly was just awful. She took forever to get back to you and never used her phone to call you. It was always by e-mail. We planned this a year in advance and the communication from Kelly was a disgrace. The last month before the wedding she said" her phone broke". She never replaced it in a whole month. What kind of business owner would let that happen. I owned a business for 15 years and I never had more than one day without a phone. The owner should fire her immediately before his business goes downhill. If one person complains there 10 others that want to complain that don't but will never come back and won't recommend your place. We got married here on October 4th and had a wonderful time. As a couple that hadn't put a ton of thought into the thousands of details that go into a wedding, Via was an absolute godsend. Her energy was great and she helped move us along in the right direction. She was punctual and accommodating for all of our wedding needs (including letting us visit the studio several times before the date to finalize details). She ordered all the furniture and linens for us (and arranged the drop offs and pickups). She gets an A+. The venue itself is a great place for a downtown wedding. It was the perfect size for our group (around 60 guests) and is set up nice to have both the ceremony and the reception (their staff even flips the room for you). The bar is almost smack dab in the middle of the space, which allows for guests to approach it from either side. Everything was clean. We asked our guests how they liked the bartenders and staff and we only heard positive things. They kept the food coming and the drinks flowing. One piece of advice if you are going to set up decorations before your wedding: don't go near the white walls. Even if you don't move them, a grumpy man may come out and accuse you of doing so. So let them move the walls! We highly recommend this place for a wonderful urban wedding. read more

I've been out quite a lot and I was there for the first time last weekend, and I did not like the place for 2 reasons: 1) They charged me the same amount of money i spent that night 2 times. I've been contacting them and have not been successful. 2) The bartender who was serving me and my friends tipped him self in front of us without asking before giving back our change. SO RUDE. I do not recommend nor want to come back to this place ever again. Bad services and manage! read more

The classy and the classless...that all depends on how long you stay and how drunk the people around you get. It's a pretty nice event space that hosts some good events. I definitely recommend hitting it up for a first Thursday during the summer. Free entry usually before 10 pm. They often host party events on the weekend, some of which are private and others are open to the public. Several of these parties come with a free small food buffet provided at the start of the night before the drinking and dancing commences. It can get pretty packed both at the bar and on the dance floor once the night gets started but if you get there early enough to have your fill on drinks and spend your time on the dance floor or figure out some other strategy you can grab a good spot and have a ton of fun. I suggest going to a happy hour before, hitting up Urban, then going out to some of the other downtown bars after or something along those lines. The one thing I absolutely suggest you do not do...is leave your credit card at the bar. It's not like anything bad happened to mine, I just was never able to get a hold of anyone who works there to get my credit card back over the next week because it's an event space that is usually empty. read more

Pearl catered our destination wedding in the Columbia River Gorge. From the initial inquiry, through tastings and food critiques, to the final event Pearl was professional, accommodating, personal, and flexible. Meagan was knowledgeable, so sweet, and knows how to run the show the day of! We had family-style served to our guests, and everyone was thrilled at the presentation, efficiency, and flavor (especially the potatoes au gratin!). Our event at Urban Studio was as awesome as it gets! My son's Bar Mitzvah was enhanced by the modern clean look of the facility and the separate rooms, the big room for dancing and and the smaller front room for quiet visiting with bistro tables and those gorgeous half circle white couches. The size of the big banquet room was perfect for the DJ and the incredibly fun photobooth we hired. The food was outstanding, with many, many guests complimenting the food and the family style service we chose. Via, the space manager, was extraordinarily helpful thorughout the process, suggesting party ideas and being available whenever needed. I can't rave enough about Urban Studio! read more

This venue was difficult to work with. If you want to do all the planning/setup and use the blank space, maybe. Be prepared to clean the bathrooms, sofas, and whatever is left dirty from the night before. The place is cheap to rent- I get that. You get exactly what you pay for...10$ IKEA side tables and all. They will say 'we do events like this every day' which the intent is to put you at ease but in end makes you feel like your event is insignificant. We were told all the tables, chairs, linens, etc., would be set up so when my florist and coordinators showed up at 1pm they could add all the special details. We were told we were not allowed to hit the scene until 1pm, but NOTHING was ready for us when we arrived. Westcoast event productions was wonderful and really saved the day. WCEP staff spent additional time setting up for us when Urban studios staff was no where to be found. The experience was full of frustration. I will not recommend US to any bride as there is already enough stress associated with the planning process. To top it off, Urban studios management doesnt care how events turn out. They took weeks to respond to our complaints. We had 4 different people with multiple complaints about their side of the process- the day of coordinator, the wedding event coordinator, the florist, and the bride. Our concerns were disregarded. read more
