This bad boy is a truffled mac 'n' cheese with pulled pork... Immense!!!!

We have visited here on a few occasions, both for food and drinks and have never been disappointed. The food has always been really good although I have to say I've always had the macaroni cheese with truffles and pulled pork, and it is quite simply Devine! It's a really big portion, which could easily feed two for a light meal, but I am a piggy!! And at £9 it's really good value! My partner had the BBQ ribs, which he really enjoyed they were meaty and tender and the BBQ sauce was tasty but not sickly sweet as can sometimes be, served with a good portion of chips as well. The down side of this place is it's quite dark and maybe a bit dingy, I suppose this is the look they are going for, but with some sunny beer terraces over the road I have to say I'm probably more inclined to visit on of those. They offer a good selection if locally brewed beer and a good selection if spirits as well. This is a great place for a bite to eat (macaroni cheese) stop and a visit for a couple of drinks, but I wouldn't spend all night here.

This primarily gets five stars because of the gin selection and the staff. Although the food looks pretty insanely good. It would be one of my picks for a gin along this street. It's an American style bar/eatery with their own semi Scottish twist to things (well there's thistles on the wall). When the room is full it has a great atmosphere but when there isn't many groups it can feel quite empty. Not to worry though because it just means you get food and drinks quicker and can have a decent conversation with the bar. They have 7or so gins to chose from with their own specific garnishes. Yay respect to the garnish! The gins includes a local from Bristol and various others including Gin Mare. Their house gin is served with fever tree and a slash of rhubarb tonic and it's dangerously moorish. Food wise, there are lots of burger-y, mac and cheese-y type things but there is also some great looking sharing platters that are perfect for picking at over drinks and fairly substantial (probably not enough for two people's dinner but depends on how hungry you are). They also do a Sunday roast which I don't doubt would be excellent.

The lady who came to seat us was extremely nice and made sure we got our drinks and food quickly, which was appreciated. There was another young lady who had some small talk with my girlfriend about Harry Styles, as my girlfriend had brought the vinyl with her. That was extremely nice and friendly of her. My girlfriend and I ordered a pizza to share and, to be honest, it wasn't PizzaExpress level, but it was cheap and cheerful. It tasted very nice; I just wish it had been cooked a bit more, as the dough was very light. Overall, the two members of staff who served us were very nice, and it's just a shame we were left standing for 10 minutes waiting to be seated with no one paying attention to us.

What is also a little querky is that i the toilets they have a 'teach yourself italian' CD running on loop, so you can pick up a few Italian words everytime you pop to the loo! The soundtrack in the resteraunt is also pretty distinctive, and if you find yourself loving it you can buy one of their CD's! Frankie and Benny's, not just your average chain resteraunt....

Whoever invented these knew the perfect combination of flavors though, they were fantastic!! I also ordered the Rodeo burger (before I knew how big the fries were) and that was the best burger I've ever had, just amazing. We sat outside on a long picnic table because all the tables were full inside. There were already people sitting there and it was so nice to speak to people in the community and get to know them. We made sure to stop back by the Hobgoblin on our way out of town and plan to go next time we visit!

And it's back with BIG food. Although pulled pork is 'in' at the moment, the Hobgoblin do it very well. Huge rolls filled with Mexican marinated pork with slaw and pickles on the side. As well as the big pulled pork rolls they do mountain sized burgers that look deliciously threatening; cheese rolling down the sides and buns shining from the grease. But the best thing on the menu is the 'Dirty, dirty fries' which were 'born out of a hangover'. The Dirty, dirty fries are a huge mix of fries, pulled pork, melted cheese and spicy sauces. They really are amazing! The Hobgoblin has a food challenge called 'The Kraken'. I can't remember everything that's on it but it involves lots of meat, dirty fries and chicken wings. I don't think anyone has completed it within the hour yet. Their pulled pork is smoked on site, burgers homemade and meat locally sourced from a Gloucester Road butcher. Probably bought with Bristol pounds and wrapped in an evening post, too! The decor is casual and the bar serves your normal lagers, beers, ciders, cocktails and shots. While the emphasis is on the food at the Hobgoblin, you'll still find a few groups just there for drinks. This isn't a first date place but it is a great place to meet mates and tuck into great, dirty food.
