It's still as charming, still has the same locals, still the same landlord and, I think, still the same roaring log fire. The Cross Hands doesn't do food, but it does do lots of guest ciders, ales and a brilliant atmosphere. The landlord and landlady (Pete and Lesley) are great (Pete is the spitting image of Peter Stringfellow - with open shirt and hairy chest) and make you feel like part of the furniture - which can make leaving quite difficult at times! Friday nights are good fun. Typical local pub style. A bit of cheese on the jukebox and a good mix of young'ens and old'ens to keep it interesting from one end of the pub to the other. But the best thing about this pub isn't its huge back garden. It isn't the fact you can use one of their massive BBQ's and bring your own meat/food. It isn't even the regular events they hold in the summer with live bands and cider in boxes. The best thing about the Cross Hands is the pub dog. A beautiful Staffordshire Bull terrier who has the gentlest demeanour and wonderful personality. She'll pin her belly to the ground and wiggle her way over to say hello. All the while snorting like a little pig. She has her own arm chair and sits with the locals who play cards on the big round table from 4pm every day. This is a lovely little boozer that has a huge garden for the summer and wonderful warm log fire for the winter. As it is out of town, you can knock 40-80p off the price of pint. A must if you're in the area.

A 5 star AA pub a couple of miles further back had 'no room at the inn' when we called in for sunday lunch without booking. But not such bad luck after all! We drove on and found a very warm welcome, open fire burning away and we very quickly had in front of us beautiful home cooked roast beef dinners with all the trimmings followed by fruit crumble and custard. Our daughter settled on a home made lasagne then Black Forest gateau. All this for a very reasonable price (much less than down the road!). Yesterday was the 13th annual Beer Festival (an annual fund-raising event) at the Rose and Crown, where ales, beers, and ciders flowed freely, burgers and sausages were grilled, and music was made under clear blue skies in the rear garden. We spent four hours at the festival, during the afternoon, chatting with local characters and trying a variety of ciders and beers. It was a very good time for all. Then today, after helping with the clean-up in the back garden at the R&C, we booked a family table at the Pub and all got together for Sunday dinner. We had roast beef and roast pork dinners with steamed vegetables, potatoes, cheesy cauliflower, and Yorkshire pudding. I had a pint of stout with dinner and a wonderful bit of spotted dick for dessert. The food and service was impeccable; the setting is grand, and the entire experience has capped off a great visit to Gloucestershire.

It stands in most towns and villages like a proud relic of what used to be. No longer are they places purely for drinking, talking about your latest sexual conquest, arguing the toss over who should have won the football at the weekend and putting the world to rights with your mates after a long week at work. Pubs nowadays are places of sophistication, smartness, elegance and above all gastronomy. This is mainly because most breweries are quite happy to royally shaft their tenants on rent and beer costs, tying them into everything so therefore they have no option but to cater for the masses and dedicate part of their ye olde tavern into a makeshift Claridges. But all that aside, I like a pub. Most of them are great places to eat and drink. And there are still a few hidden gems that are purely drinking houses but the majority are now gastro pubs. And most offer great food. One of those great pubs is in the village where I live. The Railway Tavern in Charfield is a family run pub that offers home cooked pub grub at a good cost and portion sizes are generous to say the least. I have visited this place now three times. Each time I've had a different meal and each meal a delight to eat. On my first visit I had their southern fried chicken burger. Freshly made and the southern fried coating was light and well seasoned. I'm guessing homemade and not out of a packet or a tub. On my second visit I had the chicken goujon starter followed by their homemade lasagne. Both dishes where excellent. The lasagne was very tasty, fresh and plentiful. My third visit I had steak and ale pie with chips. The pie was a proper pie. And if you are a regular reader of mine then you'll know how I detest with an evangelical passion puff pastry lids! So I was glad when this turned up. Taste wise it was nice but a little over seasoned for me. I'd like not to die at the dinner table of a salt induced heart attack! The pastry was a little tough to cut into which makes me wonder how how fresh this was? But it was a nice and pleasant dish. Well put it this way I ate it all so it couldn't have been that bad. The rest of the menu is fairly extensive with plenty to choose from. Some dishes like the Cambodian Street food curry you wouldn't find on any other pub menu. This is one for those vegans! I think it's law now that you have to keep them happy otherwise they start squatting in your car park telling the world how monstrous you are for eating chicken. The dessert menu is a little small with only a few things to choose from. I can highly recommend their sticky toffee pudding with custard. With a 6pm supper club most days this is an ideal place to eat midweek if you don't want to fire up the oven at home. You won't be disappointed if you go, this is a great little place. What else I like about this place apart from being on my doorstep is that the staff are lovely. Really helpful and friendly. They are a credit to the owners. The pub itself is traditional in decor and very homely and inviting. A traditional English village pub it has all the charm you'd expect and is family friendly. I'll definitely be returning and I'd highly recommend as I have do already to anyone.

As time went on we decided that we would like to stay and have dinner here but indoors as it was getting cold. There were 14 of us and they managed to fit us into the restaurant area on the proviso we ordered quickly before the 6:30pm booking arrived and one table had to vacate by 8pm. The staff were great and we did not feel that we were being rushed even though some people had starters. A lot of us picked from the specials board and the food came out devine and the service was outstanding. The place was busy as it was the jazz/fringe festival weekend so the clientelle was of all ages (a bit annoying having babies/kids screaming thoughout the meal) including elderly who came in through the fire door for easy access. I would definitely recommend this place which is also dog friendly. This place is soo good that Seasick Steve was playing there that evening and eating his dinner in the pub part as we left.
