I had my first cut and color at Urban Gypsy last night, and it was an absolutely amazing experience. My appointment was with Miriam and I was going to be getting my first balayage. I was kinda of nervous because this was the most drastic thing I had ever attempted to do on my hair. And my hair is super curly and textured, so I had no idea what the outcome was going to be. Miriam was an absolute joy. She explained the whole process to me, asked me how I normally wear my hair, how often I straighten it, she talked to me about coloring choices, showed me pictures, the whole works. The vibe of the salon is super chill too, and I definitely felt like I was in good hands. Another stylist at the salon, Lily, was helping out too and she was just as amazing! They worked as a team and literally gave me princess treatment. I had a truly phenomenal experience hanging out with them. I feel like we are already best friends! Urban Gypsy has now come through for me in a pinch twice! Need I say more? The staff is so friendly and accommodating. They accepted my last minute appointment requests (one made through yelp!) and were patient when I got stuck in traffic and was running late to my latest appointment. After my first visit, I was emailed a coupon which led me to schedule the second visit. On both occasions I had my eyebrows waxed. I was in and out quickly. They take good care of their clients and I always leave in a good mood. Also, they loved Butler students, staff, faculty, and alumni! Parking can be tricky in that part of Broad Ripple, but if you aren't there during lunch or dinner, you should be able to find street parking. read more

Service is always quick, warm and affordable! Whenever I'm in town, I ALWAYS hit up this spot. The hard wax doesn't irritate my skin and for the most part, all hair is removed. They sell an exfoliating pad that I thought was just being pushed so I could spend more money, but trust me, it is worth it. It prevents ingrown hairs and makes future better. read more

I own my own company and travel to Indy from the west coast often. Last week I needed to get waxed and was away from my usual waxing spa in LA. After calling over FIVE different locations, I finally found a place that was open and catered to a professional business woman's working hours. Urban Gypsy got me an appointment that very day. The wax was painless and perfect. Because I have incredibly sensitive skin, I normally end up with ingrown hairs for the next couple of weeks, no matter what I do for post-care. Urban Gypsy is hands-down the best hair salon I have ever visited, for the following reasons: 1) The place is super cozy and the atmosphere is friendly. You can tell that the stylists like each other and like their customers. 2) I came in with very long hair (always been long) and wanted a pretty drastic pixie cut. Most stylists I've had in the past have actively tried to deter me from cutting my hair short. Erin at Urban Gypsy was so encouraging and very excited about the cut! 3) I showed my stylist several pictures of the kind of haircut I wanted. I RARELY get my hair done, so I used the handy dandy yelp app to help locate what I thought was going to be an awesome salon. Urban Gypsy popped up as a pretty popular place, so I figured I'd give it a try. I will preface my not-so-great experience with mentioning how the people who work there seem to be very personable people with smiles on their faces, and the shop is a neat little place. Chris was my stylist and was very easy to talk to and made me feel like I was in great hands. Last Monday, I had an appointment to get a balayage. I was SO excited! I showed Chris my picture and he said that he could definitely do the color. I was leaving my roots my natural color and just wanted it to melt into a beautiful blonde. Chris made sure I was comfortable throughout the whole process and was telling me about what was going on as he was doing it. I felt very confident that my hair was going to look stellar. I had a 4pm appointment and didn't finish up until 7pm. So, when Chris revealed my hair, I looked it over and was initially disappointed because I thought it would be a lot lighter. But, figured I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. He didn't have me check out the back of my hair, which looking back on it, I see why now. So, I left the shop after spending $135 and 3 hours in the chair a little disappointed. I looked at my hair in the mirror at home and my heart sank. It looked NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like a balayage. It looked like I had some highlights thrown throughout my head. I'm not one to complain, so I got a few opinions from friends who get their hair done regularly on whether or not I should call them back to have them fix it. The consensus was to call and request a fix. I got an appointment for Saturday, and looked forward to getting my hair corrected. I showed up Saturday and Chris knew exactly what we were going to do. I felt safe that he understood what I was asking to be done. There was a disconnect between the blonde and it was definitely NOT a balayage. He talked very nicely with me throughout and was commenting on how well my hair was lifting and that it was turning out great. I was so excited! He offered to curl my hair, which I almost did, but then decided to not waste more time as this appt took 3 hours, too. While my hair was 'lifting', someone called to book a balayage, but the one girl hairdresser said she couldn't do it because she didn't have the right product. Chris was asked if he had some product she could use and he said 'no'. That should have been a clue to me that this 'fix up' appt was going to go sour. After my hair was toned, washed, and blown dry, the big reveal was had. My heart sank when I was handed the mirror and looked at my hair. Nothing looked like it had changed. I showed Chris the picture again and said, I thought it would be lighter...look, my hair looks nothing like this picture. Not even close! He apologized and said there was no excuse for it to not look like the picture and that he didn't have the right product to lift it to where it needed to go. I was so disgusted because I spent another 3 hours for nothing to have changed and WONDERED WHY YOU WOULD TRY TO FIX HAIR YOU MESSED UP ON IN THE FIRST PLACE WITHOUT THE RIGHT TOOLS???? I walked out of there feeling so disappointed and lied to. Why would he say it looks so great and lifted so well, when NOTHING CHANGED?! I called them to request a refund, and they apologized and said they'd refund the color part ($90). While I would have liked the whole $135, especially since I tipped on an awful hair job and spent 6+ hours getting my hair worked on where no one can see a difference, but I'm willing to not throw a stink over 45 bucks. While I'm sure some stylists there might do great work, I will not ever be going to this salon again, nor will I ever refer a person to try them out! I would rate them zero stars if possible, but chose to give 2 because they at least had some interpersonal skills. read more

Never having been to Urban Gypsy; I booked a last minute appointment for a complete style over-haul and am SO GLAD I did. Chris was my stylist and though we didn't have a ton of time... he seamlessly worked through my hair making sure my layers were smooth, my cut was even, and I was getting what I asked for. He was exceptionally kind and patient, since I felt chatty today, but he knew when to stop and check in to make sure I was comfortable (6+ inches off can make anyone nervous). I have had so many issues in my lifetime with my curly hair. All of those issues melted away when I met Erin Kruse at Urban Gypsy. I think I found Erin by googling "curly hair indianapolis" and several other people had already reviewed her hair expertise. I decided to have her chop a decent amount of hair from my head a couple years ago. At that point in time, I think I had gone more than a year without a hair cut (remember, I have "issues"...which mostly had to do with women pulling out stiff brushes to "deal" with my hair, then not understanding why I would start crying when I looked in the mirror to see an electrocuted Cousin It). That hair cut was the best hair cut I had ever had. A few months later I went back for a trim, then I moved away for a year to a tropical island in the Pacific & I went a little hippy with my hair (let it grow, let it soak up lots of ocean, etc). When I finally made it back to Indy, after a year of Hawaii hair, Erin once again performed her magic. I showed her some pictures of what I wanted & she made my hair better than I ever thought was possible. I still have people from work stopping me to tell me how much they like my hair cut (nearly 6 weeks later). This is the only hair cut I've ever had that still looks good, even after I drive around in my car with my windows down. I don't know how it works, but I love it love it love it! On top of her mad hair skills, Erin is also a sweet person and is down-to-earth. This is a great little place! Tucked in the northern end of Broad Ripple, right across from the vintage store. Urban Gypsy personifies the eclectic charm we've come to know and love from Broad Ripple! I highly recommend you see Miriam or Lily! I've seen them for years and followed them over here from their old salon. I most recently saw Miriam and can not rave about my hair enough! I wanted to brighten up my hair for the upcoming summer season just a bit. Miriam recommended just a few coppery highlights around my face and through the ends. Chris is amazing and is truly knowledgeable about color, products, hair care, etc. He colored and cut my hair and I love how it turned out. He made sure my highlights were not streaky and took the time to add very thin foils for a natural look. He also did a great job with layering my hair. I really want to like this salon. I waited almost a month before writing this review to see if I would change my mind but the truth is I left feeling like I spent over $100 for nothing. Directly after my appointment I went out to grab drinks with friends who said, "I thought you were getting your hair done today." I can see why they keep winning awards in Indy: This is a seriously professional Brazilian. Cindy is thorough and professional and makes it as easy as possible. Sure JATA's is still a fine salon with many talented stylists, but mine - miss Jenn - has recently jumped ship and taken up with Urban Gypsy....and therefore, so have I! I recently visited Jenn in her new digs and I have no complaints. That is, except for the fact that a nice gentleman who is currently studying to be reflexologist was giving either free or ultra-cheap treatments and I couldn't take advantage of the deal :-( because I was on such a tight schedule. I think I'm really going to like Urban Gypsy...after all, it puts me smack-dab in the middle of Broad Ripple. This way, I can build an entire afternoon around my hair appointment....vintage shop across the street, bead shop up the street, Monon Coffee a short walk away..... Need a good stylist? I started going to Urban Gypsy when I needed a hair intervention FAST and everywhere else was booked up. Also, I knew Cindy, the owner, from a long time ago and the salon from when it was a jewelry/clothing place. Anyway, I got assigned to one of the stylists (don't feel comfortable disclosing the name) and I've been going there for about a year. I was a former customer of Peggy Taylor's but stopped going there, and they have since gone out of business. I love the vibe of Urban Gypsy and they are super-nice there, and the price is right. Not cheap, not unreasonably expensive. I've been going to the same stylist because he always seems to have appointments available and he does a decent job, until this last time. He gave me a rather lopsided cut, and so a week later I went back to have him fix it, which he did, free. I'm still not entirely happy with it but it will grow out.
