I am in Houston for work when I started having a toothache that radiated pain to my ear as I've never experienced before. Urban Dental was just across the street from the condo I was staying at so-called them late afternoon on Tuesday and they were able to fit me in the following afternoon. Dr. Moon suggested the problem tooth required removal or root canal. A root canal it was and within two hours I was on my way. Dr. Moon and his entire staff were so friendly and professional. If I was a resident of Houston this would be my dentist's office. The best dental experience ever! read more

I was between dentists and so when a occasional pain in a molar that I had a crown on became an excruciating all the time pain I knew I needed an emergency dental procedure. We found Dr Moon under a search for emergency dental procedures and they accepted me as a patient immediately and scheduled my appointment for just a couple of hours later the same day. Dr. Moon and his staff are very friendly and very professional and I am so glad I went to them. Dr. Moon was able to drill a small hole in my crown and then spent a lot of his time working through the small hole on my infected tooth to be sure that it was 100% clean, all while working with his regularly scheduled patients. He closed the hole on completion to save my existing crown so that I do not have to go back for a crown replacement. The reviews are true. Urban Dental is 5-stars all the way. I hadn't been to the dentist in longer than I'd like to admit. But the staff - from the receptionists to the dental hygienists to Dr. Moon himself - were all friendly, thorough and informative. And they did not up-sell one bit. I was concerned about my still-there wisdom teeth, the possibility of braces and questionable cavities. But Dr. Moon insisted it wasn't necessary since I take good care of my grill. Woot. If you're looking for a new dentist, call Urban Dental now. They book up months in advance. I called early November and wasn't able to get an appointment til late January 2013. However, I was placed on the wait-list and they squeezed me in just two days after my phone call. I was lucky. Such nice dentists and hygenists! I was apprehensive going in, since every dentist appointment I've had has left me in a stupor of incompetence. I often feel that I'm not doing as much with my teeth as I should. And, each time I go to the dentist, it's like I'm getting reprimanded as if I were a child. After reading the reviews, I decided to try this place out and ditch my old dentist. Their kindness was baffling. Truly baffling. The receptionist, the hygienist, and even the dentist were all kind. They didn't sit there and list my flaws, my issues, and taunt me about how my teeth will eventually rot away. They explained X-rays to me! I have NEVER had a dental practice explain X-rays to me! I was able to see exactly where the gum line and bones (teeth) were and what I needed to work on! Perhaps I'm a visual person, but this little lesson in what the dentist was looking for, going to do, and expect of me was so clear! I had never felt so part of my clean up! We loved Dr Moon! Past-tense b/c we have moved out of the area. (I thought I had written a year ago, and just realized I didn't). Dr Moon was the second dentist we went to see in the area after a bad experience with another nearby dentist (you can find my review of them, too). THIS OFFICE AND DOCTOR ARE AMAZING! Great customer service, great bedside manner (of the dentist), great office vibe. Dr Moon is very conservative with dental work, and will only drill when he believes absolutely necessary. Not pushy at all with dental work, and very knowledgable. I had questions about my TMJ, and he gave a great (verbal) outline of what he thought should happen for treatment. Wow, the best dentist I've ever had! I don't hate going to the dentist, but somehow it fell through the crack when I got married and moved from Chicago to Houston. I also travel a lot for work, so I usually can't plan ahead when I'll be in town and available for an appointment. On a recent Tuesday, I found myself in town and working from our downtown office. Using my insurance provider's website, I found Dr. Moon. Of course, I cross-referenced Yelp as well before I gave the office a call. The receptionist with whom I spoke was the most pleasant and patient receptionist I've even encountered. Although nothing was available this week, she set me up with the first available Friday appointment (which was over a month out). I described my travel/work situation, and asked her to please keep me in mind if anything opened up in the next couple of days while I was in town. Sure enough, not even 15 minutes after I called, the receptionist called me back to let me know that there was an opening the same day for a noon appointment. SCORE! I made my way over to their location in Midtown (the strip mall between Bagby and Brazos at McGowen). Upon entering, I filled out a few new patient forms. At noon, I was escorted back to an exam room where I was met by Dr. Moon's assistant. She took a quick look at my teeth before taking a full set of x-rays. Once the x-rays were ready, Dr. Moon came in. I was lucky enough on this visit to have Dr. Moon himself do my cleaning. Since it had been a while since my last cleaning, Dr. Moon had to spend some extra time cleaning, but he took it like a champ, all the while explaining everything he was doing. Later, his wife (also a dental hygienist) finished up with my polishing and flossing and handed me a goodie bag on my way out. Dr. Michael Moon was referred to me by a friend. I usually have serious trust issues with dentists, but I trust Dr. Moon. Dr. Moon is more on the conservative side when it comes to additional dental work. Before coming to Dr. Moon, I visited 2 other dentists who tried to convince me to replace fillings... fillings that had been put in place in the last few years. Dr. Moon advised no additional work was needed, especially since I was not feeling pain and my x-rays looked fine. Also, his staff does a really good job of validating insurance coverage. "The plan for the day is 'No Pain'." This is what Dr. Moon said to me while in the chair for my root canal. That plan was executed successfully. Alright, I'm a big baby at the dentist, I'll admit. The thought of a standard cleaning makes me jittery. But Dr. Moon and his staff do a great job calming the nerves. I hadn't taken the time to find a dentist since moving back to Houston, preferring to travel and visit my old dentist, but when my tooth flared up and I needed an emergency visit, I scoured the reviews and found Dr. Moon. Yelp certainly didn't let me down on this one, Dr. Moon and his practice are definitely 5 stars. It starts by meeting with Tracy, the sweetest person alive, at the reception desk. She walked me through filling out my forms, answered all the questions I had about them. Next up, Damary came in and helped me with my x-rays. And I do mean help. My tooth was so painful that I couldn't hold the plate in place, so she held it there for me while taking the picture. Dr. Moon came in next, introduced himself, gave me an examination, and explained it to me straight: Alright, you need a root canal, but to be honest, I can't kill the pain in that tooth today. You hear the stories about the horrible root canals that hurt and leave you knocked out for days? That'd be yours if we did it right now. Let's hold off for a few days and let it calm down a bit." I have been a patient of Dr. Moon's for many years and he is the best dentist I have ever come across. Not only is he a skilled dentist, but he is very efficient and spends time when needed. The work that he does is always top-notch and the professional suggestions always spot on. I originally came to him for a second opinion from another dentist that basically told me I needed a ton of work. Dr. Moon and staff are awesome! (1) His name is Dr. Moon. I love the moon (I'm a cancer) and Sailor Moon as a kid. His name sold me already. But (2) and most importantly of all (but not next to Dr. Sailor Moon) is that him and staff (namely Thuy and Damary because I've interacted with them - I'm sure the other ladies are awesome too, they are always smiley and friendly). Damary help me set up my appointment and she was so warm, personable, and easy to talk to from the get go. She remembers patients by name and greets them at the door. She made me feel comfortable right away and like I've been going there for years. Thuy is the hygienist that cleaned my teeth and it was one of the best teeth cleanings I have had. She's also very personable and warm (liking this trend!). I always despise these and try to go longer than I should without a cleaning because it always made my gums bled. Thuy explained the whole process and the why's behind why they bled or what she was doing the whole way. She explained that after a good clean the bleeding when flossing would go away that night - and it did! I feel so appreciative of Thuy for leaving me feeling very empowered on the status of my teeth and how to take care of them. Then there is Dr. Moon. He's also, (you guessed it) very personable and made you feel comfortable right away. He took his time and was thorough in explaining what he saw in the x-rays. The second time I saw him was to fix a cavity and fill a new one. Super quick and mostly painless. (3) An AWESOME bonus is that the two times that I've been, they have been very quick and on time. No more waiting endlessly to be seen. I came here during my lunch and was out in an hours time. LOVE a dental office with great time management! I LOVE DR. MOON!!!! I have zero tolerance for pain thus we are a match made in heaven! (When it comes to teeth extraction that is) I actually yelped him and their uber friendly Tracy (lady at the front) thought it was hilarious. I really like this place. I hate going to the dentist but they have changed my outlook on routine prophylaxis and teeth extraction! Dr. Moon performed my wisdom teeth extraction and it went smoothly. Of course you'll feel pressure...they are yanking a part of your skull, but besides that I felt no pain at all. I have really really sensitive teeth and like I've already mentioned, ZERO tolerance for pain. Post op was great.. no pain killers and little swelling. On top of their excellent service, their staff is great! They attend to all your needs and very VERY courteous. I love this place! read more

I was very impressed with Dr. Michael Moon and his staff after my check-up today. PROS - Clean office, comfortable seating area, quick, on-time appointment - Good staff, from receptionist and insurance to my dental hygienist - Dr. Moon was very clear about explaining my X-rays, treatment options, scheduling etc. He gave me good advice that I trust. His treatment seems moderate and I didn't feel like he was trying to squeeze every dime out of me. - I have to get some additional work done, and his staff walked me through a clear estimate of future costs and timing. Costs for me (with insurance) were reasonable - much better than I've seen at other dentists. CONS - Dental hygienist was a little rough Finally a dentist I can trust! I'll update if needed after I get more work done, but after my initial visit I would definitely recommend Dr. Moon. read more

After a particularly nightmarish journey into one of those chain places off I-10 (from the insane wait time to the cockroach that I spotted hanging around my foot), I ended up making an appointment with Urban Dental based on Jenny W's review. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Moon and his staff (Tracy, Damary, and Thuy). Everybody was extremely friendly. Everything went smoothly and I was outta there within the hour. So did quite a bit of research before moving to Urban Dental. The main reason for my move was because the previous place I went to was located where I grew up at down south. The reviews are pretty much on point here. The staff is extemely nice, kind of unreal nice, like unhumanly nice. Most, if not all are female and not too bad on the eyes too I have to admit. Dr. Moon is very personable and easy to talk to. He takes his time reviewing xrays and concerns with you. I really liked the patient onboarding process with the current status documented on file for historical purposes. They track gum level, cavities, etc. My cleaning was the least painful I've ever had. I usually walk out with bloody painful gums but not from here! It's hard to say if this place is great for serious dental work but for my cleaning it was an excellent experience. read more

I was one of those people who would never go to a dentist who didn't provide the nitrous oxide before the dreaded numbing shots, until I met Dr. Moon. In my search for a dentist close to home, I'd already been disappointed by a couple. Certain I'd need to visit a dozen more because I'm so picky, I went to my first appointment at Urban Dental in need of a root canal. I was absolutely terrified, so when Dr. Moon informed me he doesn't do the gas I was ready to bolt. Amazingly, he was somehow able to coax me into staying (I have NO idea how), but in the end I never felt one bit of pain. Since then, I happily make appointments and never feel nervous or afraid. (That's saying A LOT!) I figured I was doomed to spend the rest of my life terrified of dentist visits. I'm updating my review because I just found out they ripped me off on my nightguard a few years ago. They charged me $600 for something my orthodontist charged me $300 to replace a few years later. My previous review: This dental office is great, from the friendly staff in the front office, to the x-ray tech, hygienist and dentist. They also use very modern equipment and the office is clean and well-maintained. What I like most about Urban Dental is that they will do a cleaning your first appointment without doing one of those rip-off "care plans" that some dentists are doing to milk your insurance for all it's worth. At Urban dental, they get your new patient info, x-ray, clean your teeth and then the dentist lets you know if you have any problems that need to be addressed. They don't overcharge and they're completely friendly and down to earth. I really enjoyed my visit and I'm telling all my friends about them. read more

I'm not big on going to the dentist, but Dr. Moon made it as stress-free as possible. I needed to have a wisdom tooth extracted and I tend to get anxious when having dental work done. The entire staff made it much smoother and easier than I could have imagined. The admin staff at the front was friendly, the dental assistants were friendly and professional, and during the procedure itself, Dr. Moon was careful, patient and precise. The only downside is the lack of options when it comes to anesthesia. I would have preferred nitrous oxide instead of the needle stuff, but the pain was not as bad as I thought it was going to be, especially post-op. I traveled all the way from Humble, Tx because of the positive reviews (I'm originally from California and didn't know any dentists out here), and I wasn't disappointed. the 35 min drive was worth it to be taken care of by such friendly and capable people. read more

So if you are struggling to find a great dentist in the Midtown area, consider your search to be over. Dr. Moon and his staff are truly the best. The receptionists are SO friendly, and thorough. They are also very helpful with explaining to you what your insurance covers and why something may cost more, etc. If you call and they tell you he's booked out for checkups/cleanings for like 4 months, do NOT be alarmed. Thy get cancellations all the time and they may call you on a Tuesday and say "hey someone canceled for tomorrow. Want this spot?" So if you take a look at my past reviews for other dentists, you might see the following words: horrible, crying, painful, agreeing to things under false pretenses, scam, yadda yadda yadda. In short, I've had a lot of nightmare experiences with dentists that have left me traumatized and anxious. Dr. Moon did two fillings for me yesterday and they were absolutely pain free. He's also a super funny guy. Not like, knock-knock-who's-there funny but mostly just clever and witty. Can I also say how nice it is to NOT have unnecessary products pushed on you? Floss made me buy this stupid expensive mouthwash and Dr. Moon said that's only prescribed to people with straight up intense gum disease. Also I grind my teeth and told him I use a commercial off the shelf guard that works fine. He took a look at it and its placement on my teeth and said "well, whatever works. I recommend the custom one, but this would be fine for now." Unlike most dentists that sing a tune more like "BUY THE CUSTOM BITEGUARD OR ELSE!!!" In summary, I'm glad I found Dr. Moon and his great staff at Urban Dental. The other reviews are no joke-- this place is legit, and is no-frills. It's a family owned business. Dr. Moons wife was my hygienist and she was awesome! I've walked out of cleanings before crying with bloody gums and hating my life, but leaving Dr. Moon's, even with a numb mouth, is like walking on sunshine. read more

Long story short. I called for the first available appointment as a new patient and a cleaning - it was a couple months away and somewhat expected. My appointment was on a Monday and I got a call the Thursday before telling me their scheduling system screwed up and she had to move my appointment. From there the customer service experience fell apart. I was supposed to hear from them the next day, but all I get is text alerts reminding me that I have appointments at the time I told her I had a work meeting. They are closed Fridays, so I couldn't reach anyone and had to leave a message explaining my dilemma. Fortunately I head back on Sunday but they failed to find a time to reschedule my appointment. It was either I took the appointment at the time I had a prior work meeting or I get back on the list for an appointment in a couple months. I had heard good things and I trust they are a good practice but they failed to right the wrong that occurred because of their system failure. I waited months for that appointment, all for nothing. I will choose to spend my time and money with a practice that cares about their customer service experience. read more

Originally, I was extremely impressed. The service was very good, and everyone was extremely nice. However, I informed them I was worried about my insurance not covering everything, and they seemed to act like I had nothing to worry about. Then I was stuck paying almost the entire bill. I am sure I would have had a better experience if my insurance would have been covered, but I felt like they wanted me in more than they wanted to take care of me. I visited another dentist afterwards in Houston and truly enjoyed that experience so much better than the one I had at Urban. read more

If I was giving this review based solely on the dentist and hygienist, I'd probably give this review 5 stars, but going to the dentist as we all know is also about scheduling, and scheduling here is a nightmare. Count on minimum 6 months for an appointment and who plans their life 6 months in advance, I certainly don't. I don't know where I'm going to be on a Wednesday 6 months from today. That being said, I can live with that because that's how all dentists are, it is what it is. However, after rescheduling 3 times (over the course of 10 months), I was finally able to attend and I was 10 minutes (not a minute more) late due to our favorite Houston traffic and the scheduling assistant at the front turned me away. I was absolutely dumbfounded at the lack of flexibility. I echoed my sentiments about rescheduling and the scheduling assistant drew a hard line in the sand and said "nope sorry, nothing we can do." Before I was about to lose my mind, she offered to get me in at noon (versus my 8 AM appointment). I said ok I might be able to make this so I canceled my morning plans and other appointments to make this noon appointment and she stated she'd call me back in an hour to verify. Sounded reasonable. I didn't end up getting a call back until 2 PM, by then I had to get on with my life. She tried rescheduling for what I would call a fifth time. Forget about it, I'm taking my business elsewhere as my life does not revolve around my dentist. Good luck scheduling if you have a life. read more
