If you have champagne tastes and a beer pocketbook, Uptown Cheapskate may be the place for you. Founded in 2009 in Salt Lake City, Uptown Cheapskate has 160+ stores across 29 states of which 44 are located in Texas. Their target audience is teens and young adults. Being a resident thrifter and consignment store connoisseur, my friends recommended I try Uptown Cheapskate located on Burnet Road in Austin, TX. The store is well-organized with placards delineating key sections of the store. Uptown Cheapskate carries vintage clothing, men and women's clothing and a variety of shoes as well as accessories. The store does not appear to be in "junk" mode as the pieces appear clean and presentable. Racks are sorted by type and style. While there was a Versace blouse displayed on the wall, I did not find any other upscale pieces. The brands tended to be more mainstream and not distinctly upscale designers. You can also sell clothes at Uptown Cheapskate. Bring in items that are in good condition and trending, and they will give you cash on the spot or a somewhat more in store credit. This is a great option for clothes sitting in your closet...waiting and waiting...for you to release them. Smile. Prices were reasonable, yet not deeply discounted. However, you could not tell this by the large meandering queue at the cash register. They didn't take any of my clothes but I found some good stuff on the sales floor. I also found two bootcut jeans I wanted but neither were my size :(( I left with a 30% off newish Abercrombie black leather jacket and 2 western belts. I ended up donating all my clothes to the Purple Heart through them. read more

Parking is horrendous. Prices are too high, and there's so much stuff on sale and none of it seems quality. While I can admire that some people would enjoy a thrift or vintage spot like this it's just unfortunately not for me. I shop Buffalo Exchange;Platos Closet...frequently. When I saw the recent opening of Uptown Cheapskate in the Crestview area I got super excited! My recent visit wasn't so exciting though. I completely understand the business model. However on my recent visit as a seller it was sad & disheartening. My sell items consisted of 1 pair Minnetonka Pile Lined Hardsole Moccasins, 1 pair Minnetonka Cally Pile Lined Hardsole Moccasins both brand new in box, and a Pair of NIKE Recraft Borough Lows-Pink **Ive attatched photos of exactly what I sold so you can get an idea** I wore them once. I paid $209.10 for all 3 before tax. I left with $25. Lol. I was expecting $40. Being that they normally pay 30-40% of the value. When one exits Uptown Cheapskate your immediately emailed/texted a "how'd we do" feedback text. I replied with my honest feedback. I was met with a reply pretty much letting me know the $25 buy back was being generous. He asked "I'd be happy to take a look at your transaction". When I said id appreciate if you did take a look...i was met with a long text response basically what the previous reply said. I did not wanna fool with it after that & told him "its ok dont worry about it & have a nice day". Uptown Cheapskate pretty much lost a customer that day. Im sure Linda & Craig Berlin wont be too happy with how it was taken care of. Tomorrow's a new day and I can retreat to Platos Closet. Edit: After reading some of the reviews its basically an echo. We decided to get here on opening day and there was quite a line to get in. This place has about 20 parking spaces, which should be enough for an average day. I believe this is the 4th location in Austin and surrounding areas. Inside is about 10,000 ft.² of well designed retail space. One thing you notice upfront is that all the shoes sit above the clothing racks. The place is mostly heavy on women's clothing, but they have a very decent selection of men's clothes as well. They have a vintage clothing area which features concert T-shirts and some Lulu Lemon racks as well. At the back, they have 11 dressing rooms to try things on. My wife brought some things to sell before the grand opening and the staff were helpful and pleasant to deal with. The only problem is that every transaction comes with a Google review which is why they want your phone number and email address when you buy or sell something. Everything on the racks is gently used, new or practically new. Prices seemed reasonable. Another bonus is if you sign in they'll give you 15% off on the month you were born. I brought in some men's suits and jackets that no longer fit. The customer service was snobby and a little rude. Immediate turn off. This is a thrift store people, not Nordstrom's. I had to wait 40 minutes to get a 'buyer' to review my items and make an offer. They were very very nit picky about what they will and will not take. No pleated slacks, they don't sell. Ok. This is a thrift store right? I looked to see how much rack space they dedicate to men's suits and jackets. One small circular rack. They wanted my navy pin-striped suit. Ok, funny though they are not really in style right now. Their idea of style and say, Dillard's or Nordstrom's is maybe not the same? Ok. I looked at their rack prices. Wow! They need to take 'Cheapskate' out of the store name. I don't think I will be back. I would rather just donate to Goodwill or Salvation Army. Service - meh Selection - meh Value - nope read more

This is by far one of my favorite places to consign my designer (and non designer) clothes and shoes in the entire Austin area! The client associates are absolutely wonderful and are super kind and helpful with any questions you have about consigning with them. The manager, Mason, goes above and beyond for his clients. He truly is wonderful and such a kind soul. Also, they always have a ton of lululemon (some brand new lululemon with tags as well!)! Come shop and consign with them,, you will not be sorry! Brought a bag of items to sell here. They told me the wait for a quote would be a couple hours, or I could just drop them off and I'd hear back in 5 days. So I drop them off. The following Monday (Memorial Day) I get a call from them 4:30 pm. I missed it so I got the voicemail saying they had my cash offer ready but I had to pick my items up before they close that day, otherwise everything will be donated (so essentially 4 hours notice). Luckily I wasn't in the pool or something for the holiday so I immediately went to go pick them up. I decided to not go with the offer, and got all my items back. I confirmed twice that it was everything. Later that day when I was taking my items out of the bag, I noticed that 5 out of 6 of the Comme des Garçons shirts I brought were totally missing from my bag. And of course there's no itemized receipt or anything when you drop items off, so you can't prove anything was stolen. Overall with that and the 4 hour pickup notice (on a holiday), feels like a really scammy practice. read more

So easy to do drop off at this location and has a great selection to browse. Staff is super nice. So many dressing rooms so never a wait. Big fan! read more

I brought some items to sell here for a friend nearly 2 months ago. Overall it was a bad experience. I visited this location as they were preparing to open to the public. At the time of drop-off, there were hundreds of bags of customer clothes all along the floor. The drama: They misplaced my items that they didn't purchase. I'll spare you the sordid details of my experience but when I returned to collect my offer & the items they didn't purchase is where the issue began. I was directed to locate my own items amongst the hundreds of customer clothing bags lining the store wall's perimeter, where anyone could have grabbed bags of their choice & no-one would've known, questioned or probably cared. I was unable to find them & neither were they. The icing on the cake: Their idea of resolution was promising me they'd look for the items & that they would "follow-up". Its been nearly 2 months & I haven't heard a peep back. In conclusion: It was a tragic experience for a new location. For potential sellers, pass and sell with a more organized business or ppl who actually care about providing a positive customer experience. read more

Very disappointed with my experience. I was celebrating my birthday and grabbed a bunch of items from clearance but once I showed up to the fitting room they denied me entry. In talking to the manger they'd rather box up for whole sale than let me try on. Extremely disappointing. Only location in the Austin area that's refused my time and money. Somehow the hype for how bad this place is doesn't quite do it justice. Inept management, little to no knowledge of higher end and designer brands. Literally rude to 2-3 customers in front of me.
