I agree with all of the best reviews, but most importantly, they are some of the nicest people to deal with.

I recently had a wine and cheese party and the owner, Todd, was WAY more than helpful - and happy to do it!

Absolutely lucked into this place while visiting our daughter at a nearby college. We were headed…read moreto the donut shop next door and saw the sign for the cheese shop. (Certainly a lucky neighborhood) It looks small from the street but once you walk in, it opens up to a sizable store. We were greeted by a friendly staff member, he took the time to describe their cheese selection and the other things going on in the shop. He then pivoted to giving us tons of help selecting the right cheese. We sampled a couple of things and then he dialed in three choices for us to buy. (With an assist from another customer that insisted that we would love the Delice de Bourgogne) Prices were reasonable enough for the quality. We added some gourmet crackers that were neutral enough to not overpower the cheese. The next day, we made the three cheeses the focus of our lunch. The Delice de Bourgogne was the star of the show, a creamy, earthy, and savory masterpiece. The two year aged Gouda and creamy blue cheese were delightful as well! Truly glad that we walked into The Cheese Traveler!

We appreciated the relatively local (Quebec, VT, NY) cheeses they have, and our destination cheese, Wisconsin Brick (which we had never tried before, and which they were quite willing to work with us on getting the appropriate size). The sandwiches looked delicious but we were there at the wrong time of day, alas, but we will 100% be back. If you like cheese, this is a destination location for the region.

Based on the Yelp reviews, and this being a small locally owned business I was prepared to really…read morelike this place. Alas, what a disappointment. I went on a Saturday late afternoon, and a crowd of older people who have gone to seed was crowding a tasting bar where free wine samples were being poured. As I perused their wine selection a seller invited me to taste wine; the large gang greedily dominated the area where the wine was being poured and were well lit, loud, and uninviting. There was no way to break in and it wasn't welcoming. Some came and went but none were buying anything; they were there for the free taste and free grub. As I looked at bottles of wine I was almost mowed down by a woman who lumbered in, grabbed a hunk of bread and spinach dip that she failed to wipe off her face, and muscled up to get a free drink (she quickly returned later to feed some more.) It was quite a spectacle. Frankly, I was pretty grossed out. It wasn't the scene I expected in Delmar. The wine selection is quite thin; the spirits almost non-existent. I did buy a few bottles of wine; I've opened two: a Macon which is mediocre to bad, and an Argentine pinot noir which was simply awful. Neither was inexpensive. I can only imagine the Chablis I bought will be equally bad. The saleswoman was pleasant, if disinterested. She was civil but while not busy her priority was getting my card rung and me on my way. It's a mystery how this place stays in business.

I found a lovely Portuguese red blend for $9, that was 25% Syrah, but ended up going wonderfully with a -- yep -- delicate pork tenderloin. Some reviews I found indicated the staff were neither friendly nor helpful, I found them to be both welcoming and helpful! They have quite a collection, including a rare Scottish' whiskey that is from am island to the west of Scotland. I hope others give them a try.

One of the most depressing stores I've visited…read more I recall once stopping in here two years ago; I recall buying Calvados brandy and gave them points for having that. They seem to have an ample amount of hard liquor. I do remember being skeevied out about the store. I so dislike the nearby Wine Reserve with it's thin, unimpressive stock at severely inflated prices --with an exceedingly rude staff adding insult to injury-- that not in the mind to loop through Delmar to Slingerlands I thought I've give this a try as I wasn't in the mood to drive down Feura Bush, up Elm and Cherry, to take 104 and then 85 N to get to the only actually good liquor store in the Town of Bethlehem. The store has a huge amount of inventory --undrinkable inventory. It is about 99.8% plonk that I'd never drink -- even if served at a public function when you expect the wine to be mediocre. But, as you traverse the crowded aisles you are struck by the dank smell, the old stained carpet and the inescapable sense that you have really, really, really dropped your standards being in this store. They carry all the cheapest brands, the kind of wine that you drink solely to get drunk because you are indifferent to wine as a beverage. Walking around you are also struck by how dirty the place is, and an uneasy feeling about who you might encounter in the cramped, narrow aisles. I identified the worst possible French, the worst possible Italian, the worst possible California, the worst possible Northwest, the worst possible Argentine, the worst possible Australian and New Zealand wines. Of course the New York wines (let's face it, NYS does not produce great wine) were the bottom of the barrel (pardon the pun.) And then, I found one singular wine that was decent -- a Spanish albarino. It was about $2 more a bottle than the excellent liquor store in Slingerlands, but it didn't require driving an additional seven miles so I gave in and bought it. Of course, the salesman fit the store: while looking unpleasant I didn't imagine he was security. It seemed unlikely he'd rip himself from the television to which he was glued in order to give pursuit if someone attempted to bolt from the store with a $7 bottle of wine. Suffice it to say, no matter how much you want a drink, this is a place to avoid.
