While surfing the internet for some lesser-known (not to be confused with low quality) bottles of…read morejunmai daiginjo sake for a special occasion, I found a couple that sounded like winners. Price-checking several well-known websites and digging a little deeper, I landed at We Speak Wine. Their website was easy to navigate through. Although they are mostly a wine cellar, I was able to find the two sakes that I wanted. I really liked that I don't recognize a single brand of sake that they carried (except for Otokoyama). I'm no sake connoisseur but I was interested in both their high-end stuff as well as the affordable stuff. Highest priced sake was $180 and cheapest was $15. No Sho Chiku Bai or Hakkaisan (Thank Buddha). As for wines, the huge variety and selection are mind-boggling. If you know what you want, or if you want to play "bottle roulette," this is the place. Shipping was $15.54 for 2 bottles but they delivered right on time as promised and their packing was great. No packing peanuts, no soggy box, no chards of glass to attack my unsuspecting hand. They took out the bottles from the boxes, neatly folded the boxes, wrapped the bottles in tissue paper then put them in bottle cartons. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/QjNzU0Ys6698OKHzLVDeNw?select=BM9L_UG5w76Z4-BDKbFmFA Prices for my bottles of sake were about $10-20 cheaper than other websites. At first I gave this place 5 stars but I'm a little bewildered that the same bottle that I ordered online 2 weeks ago is now $22 more and the other bottle is now $16 more. I guess I got a good deal at the right time. Even at these higher prices, they'll still make you feel better by listing a higher price and using font-edit strikethrough. Nonetheless, I appreciate the accompanying refrigerator magnet, the business card with a human name on it, and a human hand-written "Thank you!" on my order summary that was folded neatly into a logo envelope. I also appreciate that this is a small or relatively new business (my order number is only 3 digits big) in Troy, near Albany in upstate New York. By the way, the address is the same as a local liquor store, Hoosick Street Wine Cellar Discount, so look for that if you're in the area. I found it funny that I live in a state that is closer to Japan and produces fine wines and yet I ordered sake from a wine cellar on the opposite side of the country, especially when K&L Wine Merchant is not that far away. Anyway, there is a bunch of interesting bottles that I am eyeing at We Speak Wine and when the occasion calls for it, I will order from them again.

Here's the story:…read more Went on a first date: went great. We stopped by a little wine bar. I picked out this super weird wine from the very back of the shelf and the owner couldn't tell us anything about it. Poured some drinks and it was so, so good- surprisingly so! Fast forward and it's that guys birthday a month later. I remembered the name of the wine and the image on the bottle, but that was it. I find it online. It's super hard to order. I get in contact with this beautiful company here, I email with Paula and talk to Shannon on the phone (they work here) and not only did they give me the kindest support and service, but they shipped the bottle of wine to me 9 states away in time for my guy's birthday! And it arrived early! I wish I could leave more stars- they deserve it. I am so grateful for the time, care, and quality they provided me. 8 states away or not, if there is a speciality bottle of wine, hell any wine, I need from now on- I'll be ordering it from here. Cannot recommend this team enough for going out of their way for me.

If you're looking for a bottle of Muscatel or Boone's Farm, may I suggest the liquor store on Ferry St by the homeless shelter? This store sells the best at moderately affordable prices.

I've been looking for a good spot to get craft beer in the Troy area for a while. I love a good…read morestout, but most places that sell beer don't have many stouts available. I decided to check out Troy Beverage Center, and fell in love. They have a very wide variety of different beers. I've gone back multiple times to try different ones, and I plan on keep going back! The only problem with this place is the lack of organization, making it very tough to find things if you have something particular in mind, and it's also very dusty, which makes me wonder how often they rotate beers out. Other than that, this is a great spot to pick up some specialty stouts, IPAs, or whatever you might be looking for if you're in the Troy area!

Lots of stuff for the avid beer fan or the "I need a case of beer quick BROTHER!"-guy. Lots of the craft stuff is in the fridge too, which is awesome because then you can drink it like, right away. Growler taps are now open (they said they've been up and running for a week so far). They cool the growler containers for you before they fill them up because they are sweet people just trying to get you a decent frosty buzz going. Lots and lots of choice of beer and something else I really appreciated, MIXERS. Lots of tonic and seltzer flavors to keep you satisfied. I think I even peeped a Cucumber Melon flavor. Go here, get your beer, drink your beer and come back again. At least, that's what I'm planning on doing.

Best beverage store in the area!…read more Alright, perhaps I'm a bit biased because this store is such a short driving/ walking distance from my house and perhaps frequented by yours truly far too often BUT I'm here to tell you that you won't find a better combination of selection, prices and unique charm than Latham beverage! Sure the place is run by a bunch of Siena kids that who obviously throwback cheap light beers instead of the IPAs they claim to have knowledge of ...but they are always friendly and always suggest expensive beers for me to purchase. "$20 for a 12oz bourbon aged stout? I dunno".. "It's dope dude! So good".. "Hmm..ya sold me ok!". Are there times I come in here and there is literally no staff to be seen? Yes, all the time but they have a wonderful selection of craft beer which rotates regularly and often there are great deals on out of season beer! I'll also freely admit that the manager seems to be drunk most of the time perhaps from sipping off the growler filling station in the back but I believe product sampling ensures that kind of in depth firsthand knowledge that you just can't get anywhere else! In fact, well... it's pretty obvious most of the staff is sampling the product in back. But clearly the manager here has taken a synergistic leadership approach and gotten the whole team involved. Don't forget your work environment isn't just a building, it's a culture! Driving by you might notice some seemingly convincing signs reading - "We want your empty bottles and cans" but in truth I think that by "want" they only mean the obligation by NY law to accept them. Returning bottles here means you'll need to count and categorize everything you are returning before organizing them neatly into separate bags and boxes. One does not simply drop off a bag of bottles and expect to receive cash; one must first separate glass bottles from plastics and cans, and then sub-categorize those glass bottles into separate colors, before ultimately counting the total number that one is returning... or so I was advised numerous times by the friendly (oft-inebriated) guy who accepts the empty bottles in the back. Yes, I've ultimately decided that for the time it takes me to organize all of my empty bottles it's not worth 7-10 dollars I get back on the return. Don't forget time is money, and time is also drinking time for the staff who works here. Also, I would be remiss if I did not mention the attached wine and liquor store. It's dark and dusty sure, often bottles of wine seemed to be stocked without any sort of methodology or system but they carry enough of the staples to get you through a dinner party pinch and some eagle eyed shoppers might notice some mispriced items from time to time. It's alright though, if you do notice something mispriced the kid checking you out will likely be too high to notice. In truth, the wine store which, is staffed by the same employees as the beverage center attached purely serves as an outlet for Siena college students to buy large quantities cheap booze in plastic containers. I can't hate, I mean who doesn't like a good jungle juice from time to time? What I've written might seem like an over exaggeration perhaps an embellishment on the facts but it's not, I freely admit Latham Beverage is just too good to be true. Four stars.

Maybe I came on a bad day, but there were boxes everywhere and it looked disheveled. If they had a organization system I didn't quite catch it. I found ciders here and there in the store, not grouped together. Since I am not a beer connoisseur, I couldn't say if their selection was good or even organized. I have been to other beverage centers in the area so I know what is "normal" and what is "a hurricane just went through here." I saw a lot of cool ciders and picked some up, as well as a case of sparkling water. There was a half-full (or half-empty?) cup of beer on one shelf, which I assume was leftover from a tasting event they ran two days ago. I saw one employee several times walking around and stocking. He never said a word to me when I came in, never asked if I needed help, or didn't thank me for stopping by. His only word was "yup" when I preemptively set out my ID. Maybe I came on a bad day, or maybe it is normal for this place. I dunno, but there are better options that I enjoy more so I doubt I will be back.
