UPS BROKERING, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!
FINDING UPS YESTERDAY WAS HELL.
TAKE A LUNCH, EXPECT TO SLEEP OVERNIGHT. LOL. : )
HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO MAKE THE JOURNEY SIMPLE:
OVERVIEW:
*Allow extra time for brokering your UPS package.
*Do not go during the last hour of the day, and especially not on the last hour of a Friday, because that is when everyone else goes there too!
* There are no washrooms at UPS or Customs!
KNOW IN ADVANCE THAT IT IS A THREE STEP PROCESS:
STEP 1: Go to UPS (see directions below) and FILL OUT, OR PICK UP, PAPERWORK for your shipment;
(Go prior to 4:30 pm M-F, though UPS recommends prior to 4pm if you need to fill out the paperwork yourself. In my case, the company shipping my product had an itemized list of the contents of my shipment, which made it really easy, and I didn't have any paperwork to fill out, I just had to pick up the papers);
STEP 2: Take paperwork to CUSTOMS, and pay GST/PST owing (see Customs directions below). Customs is about an 8 minute drive back in the direction from where you came);
STEP 3: Go back again to UPS (before 8pm) and PICK UP SHIPMENT, or ask them to deliver it if that is easier for you, because it won't cost you anything extra for them to deliver it right to your door. You have the option to see the boxes, and lift them, prior to deciding whether you can take the shipment with you, or if you want them to deliver it.
DRIVING DIRECTION TO UPS:
1. Head towards the Vancouver airport.
(Did you know the Vancouver airport is actually officially in Richmond? I found that out yesterday!)
2. As you approach the airport you will see a sign for TEMPLETON STREET, TURN RIGHT onto TEMPLETON STREET.
3. TEMPLETON EVENTUALLY BECOMES FERGUSON after about 5 minutes and a few curves (it also (apparently) changes name for a while to Grauer, but the name Grauer will only confuse you because there is a Grauer Rd sign that heads East that you do NOT want to take, so ignore the eastward heading Grauer Rd sign). Anyhow, once you are on Templeton Street you will end up (quite naturally) on Ferguson Road, and UPS will be on your left. It is actually quite easy to find UPS, but because UPS and my GPS' instructions confused my journey by referring to Grauer, it added an extra hour of driving and confusion to my day, also extended by someone I asked, who steered me in a second wrong direction.
*If you encounter speed bumps, turn around because you just drove right by UPS!*
(The problems I had in finding UPS were because of the directions that mentioned Grauer Road, which took me eastward to the Vancouver Port Authority-which was closed and irrelevant to the whole process. And also because the person I additionally asked, when lost, pointed in the direction of Customs when I was looking for UPS, which are in opposite directions from each other.)
(The following UPS directions, that I started with, were NOT helpful:
* Take Granville Street, heading south.
* Take the ramp on the left that leads to the Airport
* Merge onto Grant McConachie Way W which is the road that I now know leads to the airport.
* Turn right onto Templeton Street.
* (Ignore the directions: take the Slight left onto Grauer Rd because that will only confuse you. And definitely do not turn right onto Grauer Rd because it will only lead you to the Vancouver Port Authority which was closed and irrelevant to the process.))
***UPS Destination will be on the left***
CUSTOMS DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
UPS PROVIDED A GREAT MAP THAT THEIR HR GUY CREATED, MAKING FINDING CUSTOMS SIMPLE!
* I recommended that UPS give the map to their webmaster, and also attach it in all UPS email notifications, hopefully they will follow through with my recommendation because no one should have to go through the confusion I went through yesterday! read more
