This is such a staple of Gainesville! Stopped by on a Saturday morning while in town for a game and ended up coming back later for more! The line may look intimidating but they get thru it fast and efficient! They are so friendly and made great recommendations! I had a ham and Gruyère rose heated up and it was so good! I went back and got three more, a goat cheese and tomato rose, and a Bavarian pretzel. There is nothing here that is bad! Seems to attract a progressive clientele with many coming specifically for the cinnamon rolls. We went a little later in the morning so some items were sold out, but still a good selection. We did not opt for the cinnamon rolls - may have to give them a try next time. There's a limit to the number of people allowed in the shop at a time so there's a velvet rope where you may need to wait your turn. The gal who helped us was very friendly and knowledgeable. They offer 2 gluten-free items each day in addition to macarons. We tried the gf chocolate chocolate chip cookie w/sea salt, a peanut butter cookie, an apricot croissant and some macarons. The pb cookie was excellent!! Would definitely get that again. Although the apricot croissant was light, flaky and tasty, there was very little apricot inside. Was probably halfway through before getting a bite of apricot and it was just 1 small lump of fruit so was mostly croissant with a bite of apricot. Would not buy the gf double chocolate chip cookie again. Have to laugh b/c at our house, it's a joke that when you think you've added the chocolate chips to the batter, do it again b/c we need more. Well, I've officially been cured of this desire. This cookie literally felt like I was eating a bag of chocolate chips, with almost no cookie to it. It took death by chocolate to a whole new level. Can't comment on the macarons as we gave them to someone else. Would we return - sure! It's a cute place. Would be interested in trying some of their other options. So my friend brought me here finally! She has told me about their bread for years and I happen to be in the area. I purchased two loaves of the sourdough and two loaves of the seeded bread. I cannot wait to go back up and purchase sourdough again! I am very particular about my sourdough bread and this one you can taste the sour. Fresh market is the only other place that I can taste the sour in the sourdough bread. They offer pastries as well and different coffees. In the same plaza, they have a fish market that has great fish dip that went perfectly with the sourdough. The service was great and friendly. There is a raised area on the floor where if you're not looking, you can trip easily. I recommended that they put a bright orange piece of tape on it to get people's eye to notice there's a ledge. The ambience of the place feels like a bakery with all the different selections that you would see in France. If you are in the area go check it out! Enjoy! read more

Uppercrust is a local bakery opened in 1981. The original owner has since sold to the new owner, who was recently featured on the Food Networks' Diners Drive-Ins and Dives program. During a recent day trip to Gainesville, my dining companion and I had to make it a point to stop at this bakery. The bakery is located in a strip shopping center so there is ample parking available. There are a few bistro tables and chairs located outside the store front. The shop interior has no tables and chairs. I think most people shop and take away. On the left side of the shop interior are a selection of coffees, jam, tea and other boxed and jarred products. If you look to the right, you can actually see the kitchen in full force. The shop has several large bakery cases. By the time we arrived on a late Saturday morning, the baked goods were already condensed down in the visually appealing cases. They offer cookies, mini cakes, mini pies, mini tartlets, several different types of croissants, breads, soup, quiche and coffee. Service was swift and there were several staff helping multiple customers at the same time, both with items from the bakery cases as well as serving coffee and ringing up purchases. Yes, it was difficult to make finite selections. My dining companion and I settled on a butter croissant, an almond croissant, two sugar cookies, a macron, a walnut croissant rose, a chocolate chip cookie and a snickerdoodle cookie. It took a few days to enjoy them all. We have been to many a bakery and I will admit Uppercrust may have the best sugar cookies we have ever enjoyed. The pretty marbled glaze clung to every bite and the cookie was sweet and moist. It is well worth a stop to Uppercrust! read more

I have been going to upper crust for years. I can't comment on their other bakery goods because I'm fixated on their chocolate croissants. They have always been flaky and delicious. It can be a little tricky to navigate the store when it's busy, but normally their people are always polite and attentive. Unfortunately, I've noticed that each time I go there I find less and less chocolate in my croissant. It's a common strategy that I've seen other places reduce the portion size, etc. But a chocolate croissant bursting with chocolate is worth the price increase. read more

Now as an adult I am so thrilled to be able to really tell everyone how they must try this adorable little bakery. My top items are the croissants. But on the VERY TOP is the Rosemary bread. Truly a hidden gem in Gainesville! Despite living in town for several years, I never heard of this bakery. We stumbled upon it during our wait for brunch in the same plaza. Immediately, upon walking in, you can see a beautiful display of baked goods. Everything looked so fresh and yummy -- they had croissants, fresh bread, buns, etc. Most of the items here cost about $4.50, which might be steep. However, the quality is impeccable. The layers of their chaussons and croissants were incredibly flaky, yet still dense and soft. Our favorite was the guava! The employees were really patient with us when we continuously added items to our order, and kindly gave us separate boxes to ensure our pastries would be intact. Let's start with the smells that greet you when you walk through the door! The combinations of baking bread, coffee, carmelized fruit, and butter pull you right in and make your mouth water. I stepped up to the counter preparing to control my urge to buy one of everything. Ha! Ultimately landed on a savory and a sweet each for my husband and myself. (It was very hard to choose...) I had the chai latte with mine and my husband had an americano. Both were exactly the right drinks for our lunch. I've come here a few times and it's always poppin'. This time I got a decaf vanilla iced latte (~$7) and a sourdough loaf (~$6). We were served and had everything in hand within 10 minutes. The coffee is good, even the decaf still has a pretty strong coffee taste which I appreciate. The sourdough is a good size and has a nice crust. Overall, we were really pleased. Some notes: they don't have sugar-free coffee syrups, but they do slice your bread for you to your preferred thickness. Also, I've never tried their breakfast foods/pastries but they have a wide variety of unique options that all look really good. read more

Sweet spot selling delicious pastries and cute trinkets. While visiting some friends they recommended we stop by this bakery they spoke very highly of. We decided go go for breakfast and upon entering were rows of pastures lined up in the display case. The workers were very sweet, patient, and knowledgeable. It was my first time and they were more than happy to provide me some recommendations to try (and even gave me a sugar cookie on the house!). I ordered a pain au chocolate, their guava chausson, vanilla scone & raspberry rose. The pain au chocolat was very buttery and flaky and my favorite out of all the pastries. The raspberry rose was also very flaky and topped with cream cheese and raspberry filling. My boyfriend likes guava and raved about their guava chausson. I highly recommend warming up the pastries at home on a low setting in the oven for the most optimal experience. Lots of easy, free parking allows you to pop into Uppercrust and try whatever catches your eye or chat with one of the helpful staff. We tried the daily vegetarian quiche, goat cheese and Herbes de Provence. We ate it before I remembered to take a photo Creamy and worth the $. I would not mind just a hint more herbs ;) Next up Fleur au Pistache - $5, crusty, crunchy and soft inside. Perfect with a cup of tea or coffee. Last was (apologies, I forgot the name) a mixture of everything bagel and croissant filled with cream cheese! Too big for one sitting, even for two... try a bit... share a bit! On our way home we will stop back in and pick up a chocolate tart, a few cookies and perhaps a cup of soup (they had carrot ginger). When I was a student at UF, I had a French professor who always brought us treats from Uppercrust. As a result, I grew fond of the bakery without ever stepping foot inside it. Cue over a decade later when I'm road-tripping to Tallahassee and I make a stop in Gainesville. It was a Saturday around noon or so when I went inside and ordered my fill and then some. Pat attended me and he was very sweet. I was in and out in minutes. Well, that and with a bag or two. Seeing as I was visiting a few people in Tallahassee, I made sure to bring some goodies. At the bakery, I had a ham and cheddar quiche warmed. It was everything a quiche should be. Fluffy and warm and generally easy to bite into. Perfect ratio of ingredients, too. The quiche was accompanied by a cappuccino that while small packed a punch. It definitely kept me awake to drive safely to Tallahassee. Unfortunately, that's about all it had going for it. It was bland. As for the items I took to go, that consisted of four macarons (one lavender honey, one lemon, and two chocolate ones), the last pain au chocolat, and a white baguette. While everything was eaten and enjoyed, and heck while I can even forgive the coffee's blandness, the baguette went bad a day or two after. That's the only reason I grant Uppercrust four rather than five stars. read more

Totally enjoyed my visit this morning at opening time. Pat and Kelly, behind the counter, had fantastic blue hair. My wife does also! I felt left out! I got a guava pastry, a pistachio pastry, two rugula and an delicious espresso! All were delicious! I came for only one item but I couldn't resist! The coffee is locally roasted from Resident coffee and is very smooth, creamy and perfect as espresso without any sugar required! Can't wait to return the next time I'm in Gainesville! (Vegetarian options too!) the coffee and matcha is also great, but a little more expensive than what I typically would pay for it. Uppercrust is one of my favorite spots in Gainesville, they have such an array of sweet and savory pastries. This local bakery has such a warm and cozy ambiance. Despite how busy they were, the staff attended to us promptly making sure we had a good experience. Too many good options so I asked a worker what savory pastry she recommended. Got the Artichoke Barigoule Rose and it was delightful. The ingredients tasted very fresh, and it was on a warm flaky croissant. Tasted the Spinach and feta rose too which was just as great. Inside Uppercrust they also sold products from local vendors such as locally made soaps. Overall, Uppercrust had such a diverse menu and my experience was delightful. Maybe could improve by lowering some of the prices as the complex pastries were around 8 dollars. read more

Cinnamon rolls were warm when picked up. If you don't pre-order you may not be able to get the products you want. The shop and the staff are very welcoming and proud of their products.
