Upland Public Library - Front of library - Libraries Near Me - Upland, California

After being an Upland resident for the past 14 years, I finally visited the Upland Public Library for the first time last week to get my 1-year-old daughter a free library card. I am absolutely ashamed it took me this long to visit this gem within my beautiful city and encourage everyone to take advantage of this special space. The staff was extremely helpful, and this library is very organized, clean, and resourceful. It is much larger on the inside than you'd realize, and they offer a ton of programming for guests of all ages. My daughter will be a regular visitor as she continues to grow. I am disappointed that this library does not participate in the Beanstack (1000 Books Before Kindergarten) Program, but that will not stop us from taking advantage of the massive selection of children books. read more

I've only been here a few times, but I really like our local library. I love the monthly seasonings they offer. We got food seasonings of onion powder one time and I loved how unique that was. They even have catalogs of different plant seeds you can get and I feel that's something really cool for a library to offer. The first time I came here we wanted to get the green waste little bins they give for free so we can separate our food waste. We got our bin and chatted with the girl in the front who was really nice. We did a little tour of our own and liked the set up and different rooms offering for studying, working, meetings, etc. Parking outside is also east and spacious and city hall is right across the library as well. The only reason I'm taking one star off is that on the lower level of the library there was a urine smell. Might be from a couple transients coming in at some point, but it just threw me off. Hopefully they were able to address the smell issue. I do love this library though and would definitely be back soon and highly recommend others to check it out. read more

I love this library! It is small but I take full advantage of their book borrowing system that connects you with other libraries in the area. I use my online account to search for books I'm interested in, put in a request and the library has it shipped from other libraries in the area, and they are held and you're informed when they're ready to be picked up! I've already read through 20 books in several weeks and I'm usually able to find books I'm interested in that can be delivered here. This library also has some book club/discussion groups (I've seen sci-fi and true crime clubs), a cute gardening seed library, reading events for children, and arts & crafts groups. A few tips: I recommend figuring out what books you want and request them on your own device/computer. The computers at the library have slow search functions. I recommend checking your books out at the front desk with an employee and not using the self-checkout computers at the front. They often lag and it's confusing to figure out if you have actually properly checked out the books. read more

Great little library. Adorable events for kids and parents. On the adult side of things though, they fail. COMPLETELY IMPOTENT STAFF walk around like they don't hear people having full level 19 volume conversations in the middle of the library that can be heard everywhere and by everyone. Other patrons had to approach a loud man and ask him to quiet down while at least 4 staff members just strolled by like the they couldn't hear him, in their own world, more with seeds and talking to each other than doing their jobs. read more

My kids and I love this library and regularly come here, even though we live closer to the Rancho libraries. They have multiple storytime options each week, some for really little kids and some for older ones, and a new addition of a bilingual (Spanish) storytime on Fridays. In the summer, they have a great summer reading program with good programs and good rewards (there's even an adult summer reading program, but the prizes are not as exciting haha), and for the past couple summers they've also had free school district lunches for the kids, no matter where you live. They also have a wonderful program called ZipBooks, where if there's a book you want that they don't have, you can request it through ZipBooks and it gets delivered to your house brand new via Amazon, and then when you're done you give it to the library. Amazingggg! So many other fun things, like a fruit/veggie/flower seed library in the file cabinets downstairs, a free spice of the month to add to your spice cupboard, the Friends of the Library bookstore where you can buy books for just 50 cents +, etc. read more

The Upland Library is a great place to get most books you're looking for. They do have book sharing so you can also borrow books from other libraries like most Universities. In the summer months, they have free food for under privileged youth everyday and also have a great reading incentive program for kids and adults in Ghent summer.. read more

Very nice and big. It's two stories. The kid area has so much to choose from. You can ever buy books in a section that are really cheap. I took a look around the adult section and it had a decent amount of stuff but catered more to YA. Lovely library overall. read more

I visit here every Saturday morning after going to the farmer's market. They seem to always have free books and free veggie/fruit seeds outside, which is really nice! Inside, there's a bookstore with GREAT prices (50 cents for many children's books and more!) and choices. read more

This is by far the worst library I've ever been to. It's very noisy. Not even cops are quiet. Cops? Why cops? Well they get alot of homeless traffic in and out of the place. You def can't leave your things unattended to ensure you save yourself a space. The librarians are even louder. Nice big library, but without the library vibes lol read more

The staff is super nice but this place is so noisy. People talk on their cell phones, kids running around, people talking loudly...it's like a daycare mixed with a loud coffee shop. I have been here twice and it's been the same each time. Not a good spot for students. read more

This library definitely holds a place in my heart as well. It's been around forever, so it has a bit of small town charm. The design of the building has a lot of windows, and the huge center atrium gives you a great sense of space, so it's very welcoming. **Gratuitous Plug Warning** The Upland Public Library has a great adult literacy program, so I strongly encourage people to volunteer their time for a few hours a week to help someone to learn to read and write. It will be the most rewarding thing you've ever done for someone else, trust me. (FYI, I was a volunteer tutor for a number of years, until my work hours took me out of commission.) This is a very nice place to study! Spacious room for tables and your own cubicles for studying and reading. The only con to this is the route to get here - there's a lot of one way streets, so I recommend printing out a map beforehand or just using your GPS. The streets can be confusing. read more

I spent some of my youth (thank you, Mom and Dad) at this library, having grown up in Upland. Since then, I've gone back a couple times and am pleased to see the bones are still there, but it doesn't feel like it's just decayed and grown stale. In fact, some of the property (the library is part of a large civic center campus) is finally getting some good use with a youth room on the west side I read about last year good for activities, which came in under budget and works so well the hope is to add more in the future. I always thought this library was second fiddle not only to the Claremont library, but in general to the LA county library system, which has a great online catalog system and will transfer things between branches for you to pick up at your convenience for no fee, and they'll let you hold 50 items while you have another 50 out. Seriously. I don't know if San Bernardino County has any of this. Upland did a great job back in the day setting aside a nice, large piece of land just outside downtown for this, and I am glad it still seems to be doing fine on its own, even if the city officials today can't find their way out of a paper bag and are mired in conspiracy, fiscal woes, misplaced priorities, and legal trouble. read more

This is very cute. It's not as big as others but it has a lot to offer. The staff here is great and they have chromebooks you can use for a few hours at a time. Also it helps that they are open every day of the week. Some days they are open untill 7 and they have a bunch of other programs available here like movie night and after school programs. If you are looking for a place to cool off this summer come to the Upland Library and pick up a book. read more

As far as libraries go, I love my little Upland library. It's not the biggest library but it has everything I need to make me happy when I'm in need of a library. Hours: not great, but there's been budgetary cutbacks so I totally understand. Parking: Easy to find, generally lots available. Fees: It seems like I always owe something when it's time for me to check out a book, not sure why this is the case as I can't quite remember always being late, but I'm going to forgive them for this one due to the budgetary cutbacks previously mentioned, this may be one way to raise money. Environment: Its very charming yet very libraryish. I've never encountered lots of noise. They have a slow elevator if you don't feel like walking up and down the stairs. They have lots of space if you have your own laptop/ipad and want to hook up to an outlet. I love taking advantage of the free electricity and charging all my electrical devices when I come here so they are fully charged (again another reason why I don't mind the fines I'm always charged). In addition, for those that don't have their own laptop they seem to have lots of computers available for use. I've never seen a fight over one of them. They also have a nice printer set up. My printer at home tends to run out of ink, actually it dries up, so this offers a nice option to come to print out my items that need printing. The cost for them isn't too bad either. I don't generally come for checking out books as I use it more as a way to get out of my own house and get away from my kid so I can study so I'm not sure how great the book selection is but whenever I need a distraction I'm always able to find something to fill that need. read more

The staff is louder then any patron using the library. They talk in a high outside voice from across the room. I'm not saying a couple of them. Everyone of them in the last couple of hours while trying to study for college classes. It's ridiculously loud, so don't expect them to be library quite or ask someone else to keep the noise down since they don't respect we are in a library. I spoke to a staff member about it and was told, it's always loud and snickered. Ha ok, go to the library in Victoria Gardens. Tremendous difference. Ridiculous!!!!! read more

This library does not serve our community!! Their website said they opened at 10:00am. Stood in the heat for 20 minute to find out they open at 12:00pm. Really? The kids are out of school and the pandemic is over. Open the library up, on time. If not post the correct time on the website, not hard to change people. read more

I would love nothing more than to say that this is my favorite place to hang out, but I feel like the acquisitions of certain genres of books are disproportionate to the public's interest. There is a decent amount of fiction for adults, but I feel like a lot of it is thriller and mystery. I mean multiple floor to ceiling sections, while scifi and fantasy gets a couple shelves. Teen fiction also gets an inordinate amount of space, and the library wishlist is full of new books coming out for kids. I'm not sure if they're trying to push their e-reader plan, where you can pay a fee to read the books they have, but I wouldn't be that interested. For the size of the building, and their demographics, you'd think that they would have more relevant choices for adults. read more

They got rid of all the best employees to save money for the city. The new ones are just plain rude and do not know what they are doing. They just turn people with questions away. My suggestion: do not come here. There are better libraries in Ontario and Rancho. read more

The woman at the check out desk upstairs was beyond rude. First my daughter was upset because she wanted to use the computers so she was crying and I told her "would you like to see what we are doing up here?" And the nosey woman said we ask that children don't get set on the counter!?!?! What?!??! She shouldn't hitch hike on conversations because I was going to pick my daughter up anyway. Overall her attitude sucked and I will only visit rancho library from now on. read more

They have the best study/conference rooms. They also have a great toddler area and large selection of Childerns books.

I love my town library. The selection isn't huge, but I can always find something to read. Been coming here for years and years and I will continue as long as I live in Upland. I always check out the new releases first, they have been pretty good lately about picking out the hot new titles for me to read. The Book Cellar doesn't have a huge selection, but they have some ok stuff too and the employees are always very nice. read more

Since the city in their infinate wisdom gave away the library to an outsoursing corporate raider company (lssi). The feeling at the library has changed the staff has changed and it is no longer a community library. Save yourself a trip go to a different library Rancho and Ontario are still run correctly. I live in the city of upland and am embarressed to say that this is the library my taxes support. Nothing more than a glorified book store. read more

It's not big, but nothing is in Upland. Great for picking up some busy fiction but if you want to do real research you have to go to the Honnold at the Claremont Colleges. They might still have a summer reading program where the kids get prizes for reading books. Nothing like bribery for literacy. Note to parents: it's a great alternative to a babysitter. I am biased. I love books. Whenever I need anything the staff is very helpful. Above and beyond helpful. I usually take my 2 grandchildren. I noticed my 11 year old grandson couldn't find a type of book. Right away a young man, volunteered help and took him to the right section. If I could I would give them more stars! :) read more
